Chapter 17 – Damage
Kai's legs dragged him automatically as he felt both numbness and racking guilt simultaneously, silent tears streamed down his face.
How could he have been so stupid?
Why did he even do it?!
Sure, things with Ray had been rocky...but he didn't even see Aoba in that way...at all...
Did he...?
Another sob burst through his ribs.
Oh God...he'd just ruined everything.
How was he going to even tell Ray? He wouldn't forgive him for this...
And he'd just trashed his only ally here...there was no way Aoba would forgive him either...what if he told Shou?
He felt nauseous...this was such a mess...a few seconds of stupidity and he'd managed to trash absolutely everything.
Before he knew it, his legs had carried him to his front door.
At least Ray would probably be out for a few hours yet...give him some time to think about how to tell him.
As he opened the front door, the nausea increased ten-fold to a point where his throat gagged.
...Ray's shoes were there.
He was home...
Ray stepped out of the kitchen, busy wrapping his right hand in a bandage, his left already wrapped and stained with blood, stopping midway through the doorway and looked up at him. His eyes were still painfully slit, but then after what happened he wasn't expecting them to go back for a long time now. As he looked Kai over, a slight blur from what he usually looked like due to his eyes, he noticed the tears on his face and his heart sunk. Did he already know what had happened?
"What's wrong?" He asked in a gentle voice, pausing with his task of wrapping his knuckles.
Kai could only stare at him, eyes running over his bloodied hand and slit eyes. He looked menacing...he wanted to ask, change the topic, but the guilt was getting overpowering. He felt himself instantly start to tremble.
"I..." he began before his throat closed up. He couldn't do it...he'd lose him... Seconds felt like hours as Ray looked at him, waiting for him to finish. "I did something real bad..." his voice choked as he shook.
Ray went over to him quickly, gently putting a hand on his trembling shoulder. "Shhh, it's okay baby. Come sit down, I'll get you something to drink." He cooed, trying to take him towards the couch.
Kai's chest heaved harder. Why did he have to be sweet now?! He pulled out his grip, unable to take the awful feeling in his gut.
"I kissed Aoba!" he blurted out as fast as he could, forcing the words out.
Ray's hand jerked back, hanging in the space between them as his mouth fell open. He stared at him for a minute, his brain trying to think of something to say to him. Kai wouldn't have done that to him, just like he wouldn't intentionally kiss Ben... That's not what happened with him, so why would it be the same with Kai and Aoba. The longer he tried to deny it, the angrier he got, as the images of Aoba touching Kai... his Kai, the way they were always together now. What kind of sick joke was this!?
"I'll fucking kill him!" He finally shot out, going to get his shoes beside the front door.
Kai's eyes flashed with panic and whirled around to grab the back of his shirt. Aoba didn't do anything wrong! "Ray, please!" he cried out.
"Please what?!" He spat, "After all this time and you two thinking that I was out there doing something, and he..." He ground out, and jerked from his hold, he could go barefoot if he had to.
Kai went to grab him again. "It just happened!" his voice strained out as fresh remorseful tears fell, "I was the one who kissed him!" he admitted, "It didn't mean anything, I swear!"
Ray growled and pushed him back from him quickly, he didn't care he had enough of this. "I knew I should have stopped this between you two, now look what's happened!" He shot out and went to the door and threw it open, looking over his shoulder harshly at Kai as he burst into new fresh tears. "I'm done with all of this bullshit." He hissed and stepped out, slamming the door behind him.
Kai stood shell shocked as the door slammed. He'd done it...he'd destroyed them. He tried to steady his breathing and paced the hall, running his hands through his hair wondering what the hell he was going to do. Nothing would fix this. He ran himself up the stairs, his mind swam and he didn't exactly know what he was doing, but he felt a compulsion to do it... He reached their room, throwing the closet open and cried harder when the smell of Ray's clothes hit him. He grabbed a bag and opened it up on the bed before roughly grabbing his things and throwing them in.
With a pounding headache in the side of his head, his vision a little blurry, Ray continued to storm down the path to Aoba's home. With his fists at his side and how hard he was clenching them the bleeding started to pick back up, opening up the wounds under his bandages. He couldn't believe it, that everything had come down to this. From the very beginning he couldn't have imagined it to have turned out like this, that it would fall this far and shatter around them so badly. Part of him still didn't want to believe it, that Kai had been the one to initiate the kiss, that's not how it was with Ben so why would it be the same? It couldn't have been, Kai wouldn't have done that to him. Not after everything they'd done to start over. With his mind in a hazy fury he finally reached Aoba's house and like before, not giving a shit, he kicked the damn door in with his foot and it shot back and bounced against the wall before he stepped in with murder in his eyes.
"AOBA!" His voice shook the house.
His ears twitched as he heard footsteps instantly got louder as the residents investigated the loud, sudden intrusion. Shou and Aoba came in to sight.
Shou instinctively jumped in front of Aoba, he knew exactly what this was about.
He held his hand out. "Just calm yourself, Ray..." he warned.
Ray heaved in heavily, "I am calm!" He spat, baring his fangs.
Shou narrowed his eyes. "You sure don't look it to me..." he growled, baring his own fangs protectively.
"This has nothing to do with you!" Ray hissed at him.
His eyes narrowed harder. "I think your fiancé kissing my husband makes this a little do with me!"
"Don't you fucking say that! I know what happened, your bitch kissed him!" Ray yelled, grounding his feet into the floor of their house as he got ready to go after his intended target.
Shou growled viciously and lunged forward, gripping his shirt and yanking him hard to bring his face next to his. "You watch your damn mouth..."
"And he should watch where he's putting his." Ray said in a deep low growl, getting his teeth as his hands clenched tighter. He didn't want to hit Shou, but he was getting close to losing all his resolve.
Shou shook him. "Kai kissed him, Ray!" he yelled at him.
"And you were here, you know if he didn't kiss him back?!" Ray bit back, his hands coming up around Shou's wrists, his claws digging into the other man's skin.
Shou shoved him back roughly. "I didn't need to be here! I trust my husband! Why would he anyway? He's not the one unhappy in his relationship!" He fired back. He'd done his best to stay out of this...he wanted to be well out of it. But what just happened and Ray slandering his man just made it personal.
Aoba shook his head, feeling horrible. "I pushed him off, Ray! I never meant for this to happen! All I ever wanted was to help!" he defended.
Shou interrupted. "Don't you dare throw this on him! I allowed him to stay here too! This is my God damn house! All Aoba has ever done is been here to support him, try and show him the ropes and get him ready for what's coming and make him comfortable! A lot of which you should have been doing your damn self!"
"Then you both should have sent him home!" Ray yelled back.
"We did, didn't we!? But he needed some time away from that war zone!" he yelled back, "I was always on your side, Ray! I know what it's like having a pregnant partner and sometimes they drive you insane, but I always thought you'd step up! I guess I was wrong about you, you're just a boy playing grown-up!"
"You wanted me to fix this, I have!" Ray yelled back as he pointed to himself, "And I'm not just talking about the other week! He's spent most of the damn pregnancy here! Sending him home would have stopped half of the shit that's gone on up to now so don't give me that bullshit! Apparently nothing I've done is good enough, for any one of you! It doesn't matter how many times I try, it'll just get thrown back in my fucking face!" He yelled, his arms trembling. "Why the hell was he even here to begin with?!" He shot back as if it was an after thought.
Aoba's face hardened and his eyes slit. "Because you fucked him then went off with Ben the second you were done!" he yelled out angrily. Was he serious?! Acting like he was such a victim?!
"This is why I went!" He yelled and held his hands up and pointed to his eyes. "In case you two are blind! I went to end it and I did!"
Aoba scoffed at him. "And what the hell is that supposed to mean?!
Ray tore off the bandaged in a heartbeat, revealing his split and bloodied knuckles. "The hell does it look like?" He growled out. "I told you I would handle Ben, and all the bullshit he said to Kai and I did." He said in a dark voice.
Shou frowned and grabbed Ray's hands to look at them. What the hell was going on here?! "What did you do to Ben!?" he demanded.
Aoba stayed quiet. He hadn't told Shou about all that drama...it would have just reopened old wounds. "Left him in the woods." Ray growled back and pulled his hand away. "He fucking deserved it, so don't start."
Shou blinked. First he'd come in here looking for his husband's blood. Now he'd done God knows what to Ben... His eyes slit again as he reeled back and back-handed him across the face. "The HELL is the matter with you!?"
Ray stumbled back, holding onto his cheek that was starting to bruise. "The fuck was that for?! He fucking deserved it for trying to go at me!" He yelled back.
Shou clenched his fists. "Oh please, as if Ben would attack you! Then again, seeing this asshole you've become, maybe you're the one that deserved it!"
"I didn't say he attacked me..."
"Then what the hell is going on here?!" Shou yelled. This is exactly why he wanted to stay out of this...he prided himself on being a level-headed guy...but those two were getting under his skin with their stupidity.
"Do I really have to spell it out for you?!" Ray asked in a dark sarcastic tone. "He tried fuck me!" He yelled, his back tensing and his arms trembling again as the memory came back crystal clear in his head.
"I knew it!" Aoba burst out in rage. Of course Ben tried it on with Ray. That slimy sack of shit!
Ray just glared at him, his fists clenching at his sides again as he ground his teeth, tasting a bit of blood in his mouth from when Shou had hit him.
Shou couldn't help but give Aoba a look himself, to which Aoba only narrowed his eyes. "This is exactly what I've been talking about all these years!"
Ray rolled his eyes, only doubling the pain in his head that he had been fighting back all along. He didn't want Aoba to be right, didn't want any of this to have actually happened but now it had. The only issue now was that what he had done was out in the open, he didn't think he could go after Aoba again now that they knew. He'd just be an even bigger hypocrite if he tried, and even though Shou had struck him, he didn't think going after him would benefit him any. He was taller and stronger than him, he knew when to pick his battles; he wasn't that stupid.
Shou looked back and forth from his husband to Ray. This wasn't the time to go over all that again. There was this circus to deal with. All the tears, all the drama, Kai kissing his husband, Ben trying to screw Ray... This was enough.
Shou snapped. Yes, he was mad about what Kai did. He knew it was just a moment of stupidity, seeking comfort in the wrong place, but it still hurt that it happened. He was mad that his family had been dragged in to all this. Mad that despite sticking up for Ben, he went and pulled that with Ray. Enough was enough. He reached and grabbed the scruff of Ray's neck, lifting him up. "This all ends now! You get out my house, go back to your own and figure this out!"
Ray let out a hiss, but couldn't move any of his limbs. Once again cursing his damn genetics as Shou shoved them out of the door and down the path back to his home.
Kai sat on the edge of the couch, adjusting himself every minute or so trying to find a position that was more comfortable. Nothing was working.
He'd mentally gone over and over what he wanted to say to Ray when he got back...the apology, the explanation, all of it...
He had no idea when or if he'd be back...maybe he'd stay with Lee or at Tyson and the guy's tonight..
"...or Ben's..." a jealous voice inside his voice rang.
He jumped out his skin when the door swung open and Shou burst in, dragging Ray behind him.
He near enough tossed his partner in to the room before turning to meet Kai's terrified eyes.
He instinctively wrapped his arms around his stomach protectively.
Shou turned back to Ray as he was picking himself up and straightening his clothes.
"Wait." he barked at him bluntly before moving towards Kai and turning to set himself on the couch next to him.
Kai immediately shifted away from him, not taking his panicked eyes off him.
He knew he knew...
"Shou..." his voice trembled out, "I-"
Shou's face softened as he put his hand up to silence him.
"It's all right, Kai..."
Kai's scared face gave off the confusion.
"...I mean...I'm not thrilled about it...but I understand why it happened." he said calmly as he quickly shot a glance at Ray, "This isn't going to happen again, is it?"
Kai shook his head furiously.
A small, supportive smile crept on Shou's face.
"Then we leave it there and move on. Our door is still always open." Shou reassured before getting up and leaving them to it. Kai followed him with his eyes, avoiding looking at Ray at all cost. Eyes still slit and looking murderous.
Once the door shut Ray started his pacing up, he couldn't look at him either right now. He wanted to tell him what happened, maybe it would lessen his own pain if he did but he didn't have it in him to do it yet. That would only make things worse right now.
Finally he stopped and finally looked up at him, "It's fine." He told him quietly, not wanting him to burst into tears again.
Kai felt like an ice cube had slipped down to his stomach. He lifted his head slowly to him and welled up. "What part of any of this is fine?" He breathed out.
Ray shrugged his shoulders, "Do you really want me to be mad?" He asked in a defeated tone as he looked at him with pity. "Aoba is fine, Shou is fine. Why can't we be?"
He could feel his eyes wanting to cry. But he'd cried so much they burned and there wasn't really anything left to cry out. "Because we're not meant to be..." he choked out, heartbroken with a hint of anger.
Ray's eyes widened slightly at him. "I don't believe that." He said flatly, though there was a waver in his tone. "How can you think that? After everything we've been through... We've always had each other's backs, even before we got together. I understand, that a lot that's happened is my fault and I'm sorry for it, but that doesn't mean I don't want to keep what we had."
Kai pushed himself up off the chair, angry. Just at everything. "We haven't had each other's backs since this happened!" He strained out, raising his voice while he ran his hands over his belly, "you're not the same person and I know I'm sure as hell not the same! I don't know what happened...but we're not!"
"Babies change people... But it hasn't changed how I feel about you, please believe that." Ray said as he cautiously stepped around the couch towards him, but he stopped himself from reaching out.
"That's bullshit!" He cried. "You haven't wanted me for a long time now! Something better came along, didn't it!?"
"How many times do I have to tell you?!" Ray yelled back at him, he was tired of having to repeat himself so many times. "Does it look like I got something better?" He asked and motioned towards his eyes, which also revealed his knuckles to him now that he didn't have the bandages on any more.
Kai growled and threw himself toe to toe with him. "Don't you lie to me! Where did you bolt to the second you came in me today, huh!? Who'd you go running to before our sheets even had time to cool!?"
"I only went to put him in his fucking place!" Ray yelled again, his anger flaring up. "Does it really look like I went and had a rumble and tumble with him?!"
Kai gave him a look of angry disbelief. "And what place was that, Ray!? Mine!?"
Ray's arms moved slightly, like he was about to strangle him, but held them back as he growled low in the back of his throat. "God you are so stupid sometimes! Unless you want me to beat your head into the ground until you get knocked out, then fine! Or if you want me to beat the living shit out of you and leave you in the woods then sure I guess that can be your new place!" He yelled out and halfway through had started his pacing again, just to put up a distance between them.
"I can hardly see you right now, my pinky is probably broken, and you go and ask such stupid questions!"
Kai stood stunned. Ray wasn't violent...what the hell was this about? "What are you talking about!? What happened!?"
Ray stopped and looked at him, his heart sinking into his stomach. "Aoba was right..." He breathed out, trying to look at him so he could see the guilt in his eyes. "I didn't want to believe it... I trusted him... But he... He tried... I pushed him away Kai, I swear I did. And then I just lost it." His voice cracked, tears springing to his eyes as his body started to tremble.
Kai's eyes flared, slitting themselves. "...he kissed you?" He growled out.
Ray nodded and looked away slightly, his heart beating hard against his rib cage. "He did more than that..."
Kai's heart snapped. "...What did he do, Ray?" he dared to ask. He didn't want to know. But he had to. His brain was conjuring up too many images and scenarios.
"He grabbed me... Before he jumped on me. I was able to get him off and that's when I beat his head into the ground." Ray answered, barely above a whisper but he knew Kai could hear him now. "I'm so sorry... I went to stop it because of the things he said to you... But I just made it worse." He said as he looked at him again, and he would have smiled at Kai's eyes matching his but didn't.
Kai shook.
"...Did you kill him?" His voice rumbled out hints of venom in it.
Ray shook his head, "No, he ran off after he woke up and I had marked his face some more." Ray answered vaguely, his knuckles were enough evidence for anyone to put the pieces together.
It was Kai's turn to pace. His mind spinning like a vortex trying to make sense of any of it. Ray said he beat him up, had the wounds to prove it.
...Yet he was still angry.
How could he have any right to be angry when he had just kissed another man, too? Something snapped in him. As he paced he started to chuckle a little.
Ray watched him, best he could, but he didn't miss the blur in front him going back and forth not that far from where he stood. Then a cold shiver went down his spine, he hadn't heard Kai chuckle like that in a long time.
He knew he shouldn't have but it came out anyway, "Are you alright?"
"...Just kinda funny isn't it? Ben and I really are alike." He replied as his pace got slower.
Ray rose a brow at him, it taking a minute to click. "I'm not mad." He said calmly.
"Oh, you're not?" He replied in an oddly calm voice.
"They're stuck again..." He said, thinking back to when he had said he was giving him 'angry eyes.'
Kai walked closer to him. "Well I sure as hell am..." his voice growled back coldly. "Maybe you did push him off...but tell me, Ray...why would he think he had a shot unless you made him think there was one?"
Ray narrowed his eyes at him, his face barely coming into view, he couldn't believe this. "Because he's a piece of shit?"
Kai's eyes narrowed back. "...just grow a pair and admit it, Ray. Part of you wanted it...
Ray looked taken back and just for the hell of it he pretended to inspect his hands a little. "Yup... Sure looks like I wanted it Kai. To have someone I trusted throw themselves at me after I told them to stop!"
Kai grit his teeth together, despite welling up at the thought of it. "I've been telling you all along...you wouldn't listen! Just like I told you I knew something was going on there! You must have given him the impression he had a shot!" He choked out angrily, not even sure if he was making sense.
Ray looked at him in disbelief for a minute, his own anger finally bubbling forth. "At least I didn't throw myself at him! I pushed him off and beat the shit out of him, what the hell is your excuse?!"
Kai startled. Anger being drowned by guilt. He was right.
What was his excuse?
He went quiet for a minute.
"...He reminded me of you..." he muttered out quietly.
Ray cocked a brow again before not only was his pride kicked out of him but any hope he had for them. "You're kidding me..." He shook his head and stepped back from him before he lost it again. "That's a piss poor excuse! After what we did barely an hour before, he reminded you of me?!"
Kai felt himself sink down, despite feeling the fire being kindled. "Not this prick standing in front of me...the Ray I fell in love with! That's who he reminded me of!" He spat back angrily.
"HOW THE FUCK AM I THE PRICK?!" He roared out at him. "I went to defend you, got sexually assaulted and come home to this!"
"Oh, assaulted my ass! Just fucking admit it, you led him on!" He screamed back.
Ray stepped back up to him, getting in his face as he had about enough of this. "I'm done repeating myself, I have no feelings for Ben. None. At. ALL." He hissed angrily before backing away from him again, putting his arms over his chest as his back went ridged. "Next time you have someone grab your crotch without your consent, then come back to me about leading people on. Until then, keep your fucking mouth shut."
Kai didn't falter. "So what? After months of laughing in my face about him, calling me an idiot, saying it was all in my head...you really expect me to believe you saw the light and went to defend my honor?"
His eyes narrowed. "Or is that this just doesn't do it for you?" He growled as he ran his hands roughly over his stomach.
Ray fought back from baring his fangs at him, already his eyes were still slit so what else was there for him to prove his point? "This is why I always went to Ben, YOU never listened to me! Do you really not remember that we talked about this yesterday at the clinic? Yes, I did finally 'see the light'. Aoba beat it into my head, almost literally. And then you know what's even the great fucking kicker here?!" He yelled out.
"That when I went to confront him, he had the audacity to tell me the same goddamn thing! So yeah, I get it Kai. I really fucking do. I fucking suck as a partner, but the last thing I would ever do is cheat on you on purpose. So glad you didn't feel the same damn way though!"
The anger in his face faltered. They never talked about it in the clinic?
But that wasn't the point.
He was right, he'd cheated.
His body went limp, tired and defeated. He was so tired of fighting. Yet again they were going round and round in circles, never coming out of it. The ice had been getting thinner and thinner and now it was broken...
"You're right..." he finally choked out, "you're right..." he repeated as he ran a shaking hand through his hair. "This is fucked..."
"Because I haven't noticed that..." Ray scoffed as he shook his head, folding his arms around him again.
He opened his mouth to say something. But what else was there to say? He put his head down, letting fresh tears drip down his face as he took himself to the side of the couch and picked up his bag.
"...We'll figure out a way to both see the baby." He choked.
Ray cocked a brow, what the hell did that mean? And what the hell was in Kai's hand? "What're you talking about?"
He heaved himself up, unable to look at him. "I hurt you...I didn't mean to, but I did. And you hurt me, I know you didn't mean to, but you did. This isn't working...I can't do this anymore!" He cried, each sentence getting louder.
"...You're leaving?" Ray asked as his heart slammed against his chest again, when had it come to that? "I never said you had to leave... I want to work this out Kai." He said in a panic.
Kai shook his head furiously, he didn't want him to talk him out of it, this was hard enough as it was.
"I don't want to!" He yelled back.
"Why?!" He yelled back, tears pricking at his eyes. "...Here, you blame me for leading Ben on... Mock me for what he did to me... While you went out and purposely kissed another man, but never once denied that you actually didn't want it to happen..." He spoke in a low hurt voice, looking at him almost in disgust. "Guess you found something better then, didn't you?"
Kai's lip wobbled, guilt smacking him hard. "...I don't know..." he admitted. "I don't care for him like that...but I kissed him...I wanted to feel something..." he reeled off, confused before daring to look Ray in the face. "I don't know why I did it...but the fact that I did just shows we can't fix this!" He cried.
"I was honest when I told you I wasn't mad about it..." He started off and then paused for a second as everything was fixing to crash and burn around them.
"I'm willing, have been, willing to fix this with you forever now. I don't know why you would need to feel something from someone else, especially after what we did and how many times I told you I loved you... Have always loved you." His voice got quieter on him as he spoke, his own tears finally rolling down his cheeks that burned his eyes.
Kai cried harder. "You say that...you say it! But no one has ever made me feel so stupid...so small and so insignificant! My whole life, my body and who I am has been turned upside down and all I've gotten from you is mockery and yelling!" He cried before he broke down more, "that's not what you do when you love someone! Just like kissing another man isn't something you do when you love someone!"
He took a few heavy breaths. "Aoba...he- he's always there...he's never once called me stupid! Never once gotten mad at me for things I can't help! He's only ever been supportive...just like you used to be..."
Ray ran a hand down his face, he already knew this. He felt it in his soul now and knew without a doubt he'd never match up to him. He had done his job, perfectly at that, and in turn he was losing the one person he ever wanted in his life. Sorry didn't make it better, he didn't know what could but he wanted to try. He'd get on his knees and beg if it meant Kai would stay.
"I know." He choked out painfully, "I know what I said and did to you was wrong, I never wanted this to happen between us. But please, don't leave me."
Kai felt his shoulders as well as his body shake. Squeezing his eyes shut as he listened to Ray plead. "It's too late..." he choked. "It's not just about me and you...I have to do what's best for the baby. I don't want to bring it up in a war zone..."
"Why do you think I went out? To make sure it didn't come to this Kai. So instead, you're going to take him away from me?" He choked again, the words leaving a bad taste in his mouth.
Kai turned his head away, trying to stay strong. "I said we'd figure out visitation..."
"Why? Why do that to ourselves and our baby when we can fix this? Please Kai. I know this is hard, that this is the hardest thing we've ever done. But please, don't go... I don't want you to go... I-I love you, I really d-do." He sobbed out, the tears only burning his eyes more but his vision was slowly starting to get better on him.
Kai hesitated, clutching his bag tighter. "We've been trying to fix this for months!" He cried, "it just goes in circles! I can't do it any more, it's killing me!" He tried to calm himself, not an easy task as he saw Ray's heart rip out along with his own.
He knew he just had to bite the bullet... He dropped his bag and slowly removed his ring, taking Ray's hand and placing it back, savoring the touch since it was probably the last he'd get.
"I love you too...but it's better this way." He choked out before ripping himself away and grabbing his bag, turning towards the door.
Ray's fingers automatically curled over the ring in his hand, his head snapping up as he watched the door close behind him.
"Kai..." He breathed out, not sure what had just happened and why he hadn't done anything to stop it.
Numbly he walked towards the door, the ring clutched in his hand and stopped at the closed door putting his empty hand against the wood as tears poured down his face.
"Come back..." He choked out, his shoulders shaking violently on him.
Pulling the door closed behind him, he looked up as the sound of heavy rain drilled against the ground.
Typical...as if the mood wasn't awful enough. The rainy season had to pick now to throw down.
He was drenched after a mere few steps. The pellets of rain stinging through his clothes.
As he head in the all too familiar direction, he told himself even more how much of a piece of shit he was.
He was really going back there? To Aoba?
But where else could he go?
The others wouldn't have him under their roof when they'd found out what he'd done...
He gasped as his foot slid a little. The rain turning the dusty track to mud, covering his feet entirely as he trudged on.
Rei shook himself after being stood paralysed for a few minutes.
What the hell was he doing?!
He couldn't just let him walk out the door on him.
This was too damn important to just throw away. No matter what Kai said, it was going to be fixed.
He'd make him listen, make him see...
He jolted forward, throwing on his shoes and taking off out the door after him.
He stopped for a brief second. Ah man, it was really coming down...for once he hoped he was going straight to Aoba's. Not wandering around aimlessly, catching his death.
He strained his eyes to look ahead through the thick curtain of rain.
No sign of him.
Damn...for a heavily pregnant guy, he'd been booking it.
But he was faster.
He broke in to a run, taking off down the now sludgy path where he'd not long been dragged from.
Kai shivered, the rain piercing his skin harder as he wiped the hair sticking to his face out his eyes.
Walking through the thick mud getting harder and more tiring.
He stopped for a second to catch his breath.
A few moments later, his ears pricked up.
"Kai?!"
He suddenly felt a lot colder. Turning to look over his shoulder and strain through the rain to see who he already knew the voice belonged to.
In the distance, Rei's small figure was running towards him.
His heart rate picked up. He wasn't about to change his mind, he wouldn't let him.
It was done...they were done...
He couldn't let him talk him in to coming back. Not after everything.
He gripped the bag in his hand tighter and forced himself to wade ahead.
Rei's slit eyes narrowed. The blurriness lessening. If it weren't for the damn rain...
He still caught him look back at him before taking off again.
"Don't you dare!" he screamed after him, picking up his pace.
His feet kicked up clumps of mud as he sprinted, digging deep to get to him as quickly as he could.
It was lucky for him Kai seemed to be running out of the steam he had earlier.
He reached him, throwing his hand out to grab his wrist.
"Didn't you hear me!?" he panted, "I said don't you dare!"
Kai turned, fear in his eyes as he tried to pull his arm out his hold.
"And didn't you hear me!? I said its over! Let me go!"
Rei grit his teeth to hold in more tears.
"No! I'm not letting you leave me! I'm not letting you take our baby away from me! We can work this out! I know you deep down you don't want to do this!"
Kai continued to struggle.
"You're not changing my mind, Rei! The damage has been done!"
Rei gripped his wrist tighter.
"We haven't even tried! Neither of us! We've been too busy at each other's throats!" he cried back at him over the rain, "You're coming home! You're going to catch your death in this!"
Kai choked on a sob, pulling with all he had.
"Exactly! Which is why I'm going!"
Rei pulled back.
"Damnit, Kai! You're going to listen to me this once! I'm not letting you do this!"
Kai let out a loud, broken growl, mustering up everything he had.
"I said no!" he screamed, yanking himself as hard as he could.
As if he was watching it happen in slow motion, Rei's grip slid down his wrist to his hand, his fingers slipping out his grip.
With the force he'd pulled with, he propelled himself back.
His feet slipping out from under him, throwing him back even more.
Before he could really register he wasn't upright any more, a short, sharp pain cracked in to the back of his head.
His vision blurred before going black.
Rei froze, nausea and panic smacking him hard as he watched him go down without being able to stop it.
He felt his stomach heave as he saw his head hit the rock.
He jolted forward, throwing himself down on his knees beside him, looking him over.
He gagged again in pure fear.
Blood trickled out, diluting with the rain and the mud.
"Oh my god...Kai? Kai?! Can you hear me?!" he yelled down as he gently lifted his head, moving it from the rock to his lap.
Kai's eyelids fought to stay open, dazed, before they gave up and fell shut.
With shaking hands, he frantically reached in to his pocket for his phone. Dialling his mom as quickly as he could. Trying to get his head to keep it together to dial.
The moment his mom's voice reached his ear, he hysterically cried the situation to her.
She told him to stay calm, tell her where they were, his father was on the way.
Giving her as best of a location as he could, the line went dead.
He tossed it aside, going back to tapping his face to try and wake him up.
Adjusting him in his lap, the sick panic intensified as his hands became red.
His shoulders shook hard as he sobbed, wiping the bangs out of his unconscious partner's face.
"Wake up...you have to wake up, babe..."
Nothing.
His hands went to this shoulders, rubbing hard to try and rouse him.
"Please..." he begged, hot tears mixing with the cold rain running down his face.
"Wake up..."
