Chapter 2: What Year Is It Again?
It was the day after the test. It was a Sunday and was their official day off from school. However, Joann had something planned for the day...
"Come on Kuwabara!" Joann shouted.
She turned around and looked at the struggling Kuwabara, whose arms were filled with shopping bags. Five to be exact.
"Geeze Carson-san, why don't ya just buy out all the stores!" he yelled through the bags, which were filled with her 'necessities '.
Joann pouted.
"Oh come on Kuwabara! I didn't buy THAT many cloths! And just call me Joann!"
He looked as if he was about to collapse.
'I only bought five shirts, five pairs of hip hugger jeans, seven pairs of shoes, ten pairs of underwear, bras, and socks, and four pairs of pjs.' she thought.
'But then again, I did drag him out of bed early this morning to help me buy this stuff. He's been a good sport up to now. He deserves a break. I know how I can repay him'
"We have one more stop." Joann said, starting to walk away. "Then we're done for the day."
"It's about time." Kuwabara mumbled, following the girl.
Joann had to giggle at that remark. She couldn't wait to see his face when he saw their last stop.
"We're here!" she announced after walking a few more blocks.
"FINALLY!" sighed an exhausted Kuwabara, coming up behind her.
Kuwabara looked over the bags. What he saw caused him to drop the bags, however Joann was able to grab them before they could fall to the ground; which would have been very embarrassing for her stuff to fall all over the ground. She gave a sigh of relief. She looked at him. The look that was on his face was priceless. Joann couldn't help but giggle at his reaction. It was better than she thought it would be.
"THE ARCADE!" he said.
Joann smiled at him.
"You were such a good boy about the whole shopping thing that I figured we should have some fun on this shopping trip. And what better way than a few video games at your favorite arcade!"
Kuwabara's face lit up. He just looked like a child who got what he always wanted at Christmas. It was just too cute for words. Just looking at him, being so happy made Joann feel happy.
"Well?" she said after a while.
Kuwabara was just standing there, in shock, staring at the arcade entrance.
"What are you doing just standing there like a goof ball? Let's get in there and play some games!" Joann laughed.
As if Joann had said the magic words, Kuwabara ran right past her and into the arcade. He had almost knocked over the girl and the bags she was still holding. She stood there looking at the dust that was clearing from his sprint into the arcade.
She stood there for a moment before a sweat drop appeared on her forehead.
"Geez, don't mind me." Joann mumbled as she got a better grip on the bags.
Joann entered the arcade and looked around. She loved going to the arcade back home. Her favorite kind was the shooting games. There was a Police Training simulator that she played every time she went to the arcade. She still had the top score!
After putting a five-dollar bill into the change machine. She took the tokens and went off to find a simliar type of game.
Kuwabara's sister had given the two some money. It only made sense as she was the only one in the household that made money. Joann still didn't understand how an aspiring beautician, could make enough money to give the two a total of $600! Not to mention, rarely be home. Although, Kuwabara told her that his sister liked going out and partying.
They had almost spent the entire $600 between the clothes and the lunch. They would still have some cash left over even if they played a couple of the games. A good $100 to be exact!
Joann looked over and found Kuwabara close to the entrance, playing a fighting game. She couldn't help but smirk. Of course he would be playing a fighting game. He was a pure fighter even in the virtual world. She placed her bags next to a shooting game and put in a couple of tokens.
The two were already $20 worth of tokens in when the arcade began to get a bit chilly. Joann felt something behind her. The feeling caused her to die. She turned around and saw nothing.
"Hey Carson-san! Do you see that?" Kuwabara asked as he looked out the open door.
In the distance was a dark smoke cloud. Joann looked in the direction. Her eyes widened.
'So I'm in that episode?' Joann thought.
Everything was moving much faster than she had expected.
She nodded.
"Do you think we should check it out?" she asked, knowing the answer.
"And call me Joann."
Kuwabara nodded
"Just what I was thinking. Let's go."
Kuwabara rushed off in the direction of the smoke. Joann was in mid step when she remembered her bags. She grabbed them before running after the carrot top.
~At Yusuke's Apartment~
Joann was a bit out of breath when she reached the burning building. She was still holding on to her bags.
"Say what?! Urameshi's girl?!" Kuwabara shouted, turning towards the entrance.
It had filled up with fire. There was no way anyone could enter without getting burned alive. Joann stood next to Kuwabara. The two looked at the flames as they danced in a taunting way.
However, a blast of blue light came from with in the burning apartment. Everyone shielded their eyes before looking on in awe. The energy from those blue flames was strong and felt horrible. It seemed whatever the beast Yusuke was raising would totally have eaten him if he didn't sacrifice it.
Kuwabara shook his head, clearing it from the shock and the intense energy he had felt.
"Stay here! " Kuwabara said, turning to Joann.
Joann nodded and watched as Kuwabara ran into the flame free doorway. She held her breath. She knew he and Keiko would be fine. That didn't mean she didn't worry all the same.
After what seemed like forever, Joann could see Kuwabara helping Kekio and the *ahem* blanket out. As soon as they stepped out of the building, the door was engulfed in flames.
Joann ran up to the two, or rather three; still holding on to her bags.
"What's under the blanket?" Kuwabara asked, after having lain the bundle down on the ground.
Kuwabara reached over after getting a nervous 'uhhhh ' from Keiko, and lifted the blanket, revealing Yusuke's sleeping face.
Kuwabara blinked at his archival's face before jumping backwards and landing on the ground, pointing at the one who was suppose to be firewood already. It was customary for the body to be cremated a few days after the wake.
"What are you doing with Urameshi's body! Are you a sicko or something!" Kuwabara yelled.
However, he got back on his feet. He scooped up the limp body of Yusuke and took Keiko's hand.
"Come on let's go before the cops come." he said before running, with Keiko be dragged behind him.
Joann sweat dropped. She felt as if she had been left behind...again. She sighed before getting a tight grip on her bags and headed after the running boy.
Kuwabara didn't stop running until he reached his house, more so his backyard. He let go of Keiko's hand before setting Yusuke's body down and sat down next to him, letting his running catch up with him. Joann wasn't too far behind, walking up to Kuwabara out of breath as well and plopping down next to Kuwabara, letting go of her bags on the ground.
"Ok...now what's going on, Yukimura-san?" Kuwabara asked, looking over at Keiko who was also out of breath from the running, but was calming down.
"Yeah." Joann added, more to remind them that she was still there.
"Well, it's a long story, but in short, I have to keep Yusuke's body safe. He came to me in a dream, telling me that he was going to come back. It's true, because his heart is beating again." Keiko said.
Kuwabara looked dumbfounded by what was said, before he looked at the sleeping face of his archival.
"Ya mean, Urameshi...Yusuke's coming back?" Kuwabara asked, disbelieve crossing his face.
Keiko nodded.
"Yeah."
Kuwabara sat there for a moment, the information seeming to sink into his head before a wide grin crossed his lips before he started to laugh.
"Why you friggin' bastard?!" Kuwabara laughed.
Kuwabara leaned into Yusuke's sleeping face, a grin still on his lips.
"It's just like you to beat death!" Kuwabara laughed.
He leaned back and wiped tears from his eyes. He had laughed that much.
Joann couldn't help but smile at him. He seemed to be really relieved, maybe even over excited that Yusuke was going to come back.
'It must have affected him more than what the show showed. Yusuke must be more than a rival to him, even at the beginning of the show.' Joann thought.
"I can't believe he's really coming back!" Kuwabara said with a wide smile.
Joann couldn't help but smile as well.
"I can't wait to meet him." Joann said.
He turned to her and grinned.
"You'll meet him all right, but he might not be such a pretty sight after I git done with 'im."
Joann shook her head at him and smiled. She then noticed Keiko's hair.
"Your hair!"
Keiko blinked before feeling the burnt strands.
"Don't worry. My sis is a beautician. I'm sure she wouldn't mind cutting your hair." Kuwabara said with a shrug.
"No, I couldn't..." Keiko started, playing with the damaged hair.
"Naw, don't worry about it. She should be home soon anyway." Kuwabara said with a smile.
"What are you volunteering me for?" came a voice.
The three turned to find said person standing in the doorway, a cigarette hanging in her mouth. She took in a deep breath before letting out a puff of smoke.
"Well, it's a long story, but Yukimura-san burned her hair so she needs a haircut." Kuwabara said, standing up straight.
Joann couldn't help but giggle at his reaction to his sister.
A huge energy pulsed from the sky. It sent a big shiver down Joann's spine. She wrapped her arms around herself before looking up. She couldn't see anything. It took her a moment before realizing it must have been Koenma. She smirked.
Shizuru let out a breath before turning to Keiko.
"Keiko, was it?"
Keiko looked at the older woman and nodded.
"Would you like to stay and have dinner with us, meager as it'll be? After I cut your hair that is." she said, taking a drag on her cancer stick.
Keiko blinked at the older teen and shook her head.
"Oh thank you but I have to do the shopping again and get home." she said with a bow.
"Okay, well I'll make it quick." Shizuru said, waving the girl to follow her into the house.
Kuwabara was standing over Yusuke's body with a wide grin. He then threw the limp body over his shoulder and began to enter the house as well.
Joann began to follow before stopping. She could feel just Yusuke floating above the group. Koenma must have left, along with that Spirit Investigator lady. She smiled as she stared up into the sky.
'I'll see you soon, Yusuke.' she thought before going into the house.
~A Week Later~
A scream caused Joann to jump out of her sleeping bag, almost ripping it. She looked around with wide eyes. She was in a deep sleep and usually it was hard to wake her from one of those. She turned to find Kuwabara sitting up in his bed. Sweat covered his body, his hair a little more loose, and his blanket thrown off his body. His brown eyes were wide as he panted heavily.
"What's wrong? Are you ok?" Joann asked as she walked over to his bed, sitting down on the edge.
Her periwinkle eyes looked at him with concern. She had never heard him scream like that before. Well, not in real life. He had screamed a lot during his battles, especially during the Dark Tournament. She placed her hand on his shoulder. The contact made the carrot top flinch. Joann got even more worried.
"Vile...stomach churning..." Kuwabara grumbled as he sat up, panting.
Joann furrowed her eyebrows.
"What was?" she asked.
Kuwabara stiffened at her question.
"It meant nothin!" he growled, getting a bit defensive.
Joann sat there blinking. He was talking nonsense and she couldn't understand about what.
"Okay, when someone says that, it usually means something...whatever it is." she said with a raised eyebrow.
Kuwabara looked out the window where the sun was beginning to shine through the curtains.
"Oh look! It's morning already!" Kuwabara said, trying to change the subject.
Joann sweat dropped as Kuwabara gave a nervous laugh.
"So it's morning? What does that..." Joann said with suspicious eyes.
"Hey! How 'bout we play hooky!" Kuwabara said, jumping out of bed, stretching.
Joann was about to argue but stopped to think. It was Monday. She didn't like Mondays. Shizuru had left early for work. It was a perfect day to play hooky.
"Arcade?" Joann asked with a snicker.
Kuwabara seemed a bit relieved but couldn't help but snicker back.
"Arcade."
~At the Arcade~
They had been playing for about a half an hour. It was a nice day to play hooky. Not to mention, the arcade was practically empty. What helped was they still had $75 left over from the day before. They could play $10 worth of games, get a nice lunch, and still have $20 left over.
Joann was in the middle of shooting some zombies, while Kuwabara was kicking ass at a race car game, when the girl felt a shiver go down her spine. The chill caused her to die and make the 'insert more coins' screen appear. She looked around but saw nothing.
Her eyes furrowed in thought at what that chill was all about. However, it took another couple of minutes for her to realize the aura felt like Yusuke's. Or she thought was Yusuke's.
She looked towards Kuwabara, who was deep into that car racing game. He seemed to not notice the chill. If he didn't then she must have been nothing. She shook her head and went back to her game; putting a few more tokens in the machine before pushing start.
She began to play the game, again.
"Oh no, not the tickle feeling!" Kuwabara said.
Joann blinked before turning towards Kuwabara. Her eyes widened as she watched him stop playing his game. He ran out of the arcade. She dropped the gun and rushed after him; leaving the gun to swing as her character died.
Kuwabara was a fast runner and it was a while before the carrot top slowed down. Joann was out of breath by the time the two reached the Kuwabara residence.
"What happened back there?" Joann asked as the two entered the house.
Kuwabara grumbled as he took off his shoes. Joann just frowned as she also took off her shoes.
"Hey!" she said, grabbing his arm.
Kuwabara went stiff. Joann turned the boy around, her eyes full of worry.
"No seriously. What's wrong? I mean, you ran outta there like a bat outta hell."
He looked away, a look of embarrassment crossing his face.
Joann let go of his arm to cross her own arms over her chest. She raised an eyebrow at him. This only made the poor teen more uncomfortable. They stood there in silence for a couple more minutes before a thought came to her mind.
"Does it have to do with what caused you to scream this morning? Was it one of those nasty ghosts?" Joann asked, a bit concerned.
She hadn't sensed anything evil since she stayed with the psychic teen. However, her sixth sense wasn't as strong as his so it only made sense he would be able to sense anything evil more than she.
Kuwabara shook his head but seemed to be uncomfortable.
"It wasn't a nasty ghost or nuthin. It just...I just..." he started.
He didn't know what to tell her. He couldn't tell her about that dream. That nasty dream of him kissing a glowing Yusuke. That back at the arcade he could sense Yusuke's ghost. That he could feel Yusuke's intense emotion of wanting him, Kazuma Kuwabara, to kiss him, Yusuke Urameshi. He was not gay. He was a man. He didn't like his arch rival in any way.
"What's wrong Kuwabara? You're scaring me. I've never seen you act like this before. I'm your friend, you can tell me anything, so please tell me what the problem is." Joann pleaded, taking a step closer.
Kuwabara stood up straight. Joann had never stood so close to him before. He gulped as he looked down at those big worried eyes. He couldn't help but look at her lips. She started to bite her bottom lip. He gulped as he felt an urge to kiss her.
A flash of Yusuke's face covered the girl's face. Kuwabara jumped backwards with a scream. He ran up stairs to his room. Joann just stood there blinking. She heard the door to Kuwabara's room slam shut. She stood there with a sweat drop. She was more than confused and didn't know what to do. She walked up the stairs and knocked on Kuwabara's room.
"Kuwabara?" she asked.
"What?" came a frustrated sounding Kuwabara
"Can I come in?" she asked.
Her voice was full of worry.
Kuwabara felt guilty. She was just trying to be helpful and he was acting like a jerk. He let out a sigh.
"Ok."
Joann opened the door, peeking her head in. Kuwabara was sitting in his bed. She could tell he was uncomfortable. She entered the room, closing the door behind her. She leaned against it just looking at the carrot top. The two were silent as she leaned against the door and he sat in his bed.
The silence was interrupted by both of their growling stomachs. They stared at each other before they began to laugh. The distraction seemed to make the room feel a bit lighter.
"So I guess we should eat, eh?" Joann asked with a small smile.
Kuwabara's laughter died down before he shook his head.
"Yeah, sounds good."
He stood up and the two went out to get an early dinner. Neither bringing up the events that happened earlier that day.
~Later That Night~
Joann knocked on the door. She had just taken a shower and changed into some pjs. It was one of the new ones she had gotten a week a go. They were long pants, with pink, navy, and black checked pattern on them. The top was a nice long sleeved navy blue shirt with a v-neckline that was a little low for the girl's comfort. It didn't feel that low when she tried it on at the store.
"Yeah?" came Kuwabara's voice from behind the door.
"Are you decent?" she asked with a grin.
Kuwabara snorted from behind the door.
"Yeah."
Joann snorted a laugh before walking into the room. She instantly shivered at how cold it felt. She didn't remember it feeling this cold since she had been living there. She shrugged it off as it just being a cold night. Maybe Kuwabara had the window open. She closed the door behind her as she walked over to her sleeping bag.
Kuwabara was already under his covers. They were pulled up to his chin. She smiled as she watched him move, trying to find a comfortable position to sleep in. She let out a sigh before lying down herself.
"G'night." Kuwabara said before turning off the lamp next to his bed.
"Nighty night." Joann said before pulling her blanket over the top of the sleeping bag, while snuggling with her stuffed animal.
Joann was on the verge of falling into a deep sleep. However, the room temperature dropped drastically. She shivered as she pulled her blanket more around her. She couldn't understand why the room had gotten so cold all of a sudden.
"Kuwabara could you close the window?" Joann asked turning towards his bed.
The blankets fully covered him and it appeared that he was sleeping. She sighed before climbing out of the sleeping bag. The cold air seemed to seep into her bones! She wrapped her Scooby-Doo blanket around her but still felt cold. She left Koga on top of the sleeping bag before walking over to the window. She froze. It was closed.
"Stop..."
Joann turned. Kuwabara's eyes were shut tight and his body was stiff. He didn't look like he was comfortable, not at all. She blinked at him before taking a step towards his bed. She felt a cold breeze, coming from his bed.
'Wait a minute...I don't sense Yusuke or Botan anywhere...' she thought before her eyes widened.
'Maybe Yusuke was revived...that explains Kuwabara's reaction! He had 'that' dream! That means, Keiko kissed Yusuke and he's alive. But...'
Kuwabara made another noise as if someone was doing something to him. Joann narrowed her eyes.
'That means that Yusuke and Botan were keeping back those ghosts that would bother Kuwabara! So now that they're gone, they are back.' she thought.
Her thoughts were confirmed when Kuwabara flinched as if someone was poking at his face. She straightened up and stormed over to the bed. With each step, grew colder. However, she ignored it.
"HEY!" she growled out.
Kuwabara's eyes seemed to open at her growl.
"I don't know who you are but you better leave him alone! I know you can hear me! And just 'cause I can't see you doesn't mean I don't know you are here. Now get out of here before I make you." she growled, standing next to the bed.
The chill began to slowly go away until the room went back to a comfortable temperature. Kuwabara seemed to be let go of whatever had him paralyzed and let out a breath. He sat up and looked at the girl with wide eyes.
Joann gave him a warm smile before giving him a thumbs up.
"That should work for a while...I hope."
Kuwabara just stared at her in awe. He had tried to do that once. Yell at them to leave him alone but they never listened to him. What made her different than himself?
"Are you okay?" she asked, sitting on the bed, causing him to scoot over so she could sit comfortably.
He shook his head before nodding.
"Yeah...thanks...but how did you know?" he asked.
Joann shrugged.
"I didn't know what to do. I just figured they would be scared of a 'tough' aura. So I gave it a shot." she said with a smile.
Kuwabara blinked at her. That wasn't exactly what he meant but it did answer his other question.
"Okay but how did you know I was in trouble?"
Joann blinked at him before thinking about the question. Could she tell him that she kinda had a sixth sense? That it wasn't strong but she could still sense some things.
"Well, I kinda could sense something was around you. Kinda like that movie, "The Sixth Sense"...just without seeing ghost or seeing Bruce Willis." Joann said with a laugh.
Kuwabara looked confused.
"I've never heard of that movie...and do ya mean that guy from "Die Hard"?" Kuwabara asked with a raised eyebrow.
Joann blinked for a moment before mentally slapping herself. She forgot the anime technically took place somewhere between 1992 and 1994. "The Sixth Sense" didn't come out until 1999.
"Yeah...I guess dreamed it up or something. And yeah, John McClane."
"Oh man, I heard they are making a third one! They are working on it right now!" Kuwabara said, looking a bit excited. (1).
Joann sweat dropped.
'Well at least I know what time period this takes place at...' she thought.
She shook her head.
"Anyway, I can sense things and get gut feelings about stuff."
Kuwabara blinked at her before his eyes widened.
"You get the tickle too!?" he shouted, pointing at her.
She couldn't help but laugh.
"I guess you can say that. It's more of a chill."
Kuwabara stared at her a bit dumbfounded.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Kuwabara whispered.
Joann saw the small hint of hurt in those brown eyes. She grimaced. She didn't know why she didn't tell him.
"Well...I guess I..." she started, trying to find some way to explain why.
An idea came to her mind. Her eyes widened.
"I didn't realize it until now! I must have had it forever but forgot it when I got amnesia! That's probably why I thought there was a movie called "The Sixth Sense"..." she said, adding that last line with a laugh.
She inwardly sweat dropped.
'Wait until the movie comes out in seven years...I'll look like I'm psychic.' she thought.
Kuwabara furrowed his eyebrows in thought. He slowly nodded.
"Guess that makes sense." he mumbled.
Joann tilted her head to the side. She was confused as to why Kuwabara would give her that look. It would only happen whenever she would say something new about herself. It was as if he was taking what she said and weighing it against something. As if he knew something and was 'checking out her story' with sources or something. She shook her head at the thought.
'What would he have to check it against?' she thought.
Her thoughts were interrupted as the carrot top yawned. She smiled before giggling.
"Well, let's get some sleep. We really need to go to school tomorrow." she said, yawning herself.
"Yeah, yeah..." Kuwabara mumbled before going back underneath the covers.
Joann went back to her sleeping bag and the two slept soundly for the rest of the night.
~Later That Week~
Joann hadn't seen Yusuke. She knew he was back, despite Kuwabara and the rest of the gang having no clue. Keiko even acted as if he wasn't back. Joann was confused by this. She couldn't understand why he hadn't come back to school. Well, she understood that but to not be seen period! Well she found it very odd. It was as if he vanished again.
Joann thought it was weird.
By Sunday, she had forgotten about how weird it was to not see Yusuke. All she could think about was the plans she, Kuwabara, and the rest of the guys made. They were going to head to the movies and then go to lunch. The movie had been out for at least a week and Kuwabara and his friends seemed to be excited to see it. It was a movie called "Kuff" and from the trailers, it looked like something even Yusuke would enjoy.
The two were sitting in the dining room eating some breakfast, when there was a knock on the door.
"That might be the guys." Kuwabara said, a bit excited.
He got up, having finished his breakfast. Joann was still working on her own but was almost done.
The knocking got louder and more urgent.
"I'm coming! Hold yer horses!" Kuwabara growled as he went over to the door.
Joann shrugged before finishing off her cereal. She was drinking the last of her OJ when she heard Kuwabara's voice.
"WHAT?! EIKICHI!? HOW?! WHEN?!"
Joann's eyes widened before she ran to the door. Kuwabara's eyes were wide and full of fear. His three friends looked pissed and understanding as they explained.
"And he said he'll kill her if you don't steal some mangas for 'im!" Kirishima said.
His hand was clenched in a fist. He had been the closest with Kuwabara. They had been friends before the other two had joined their 'gang'. He knew how much Kuwabara loved cats! He had always had a cat in his life. His other cat was very old. His name was Kazuma. His parents really liked that name. His sister would tease him saying Kuwabara was named after the cat. Eikichi was only two years old! How could those scumbags sink so low!
"What are you gonna do Kuwabara?" asked Okubo.
Joann had to think for a moment before it clicked. It was 'that' episode. She smiled as she remembered how Yusuke came to Kuwabara's kitten's rescue. However, there was one problem. She didn't remember seeing hide nor tail of the little creature this entire time she lived with the carrot top. It had been a month already and she didn't even find cat hair!
"Who's Eikichi?" she asked.
Despite the fact she 'knew' who the kitten was, Kuwabara didn't know that Joann knew. So she had to keep up the act.
Kuwabara jumped, just then realizing Joann was behind him. Joann would have laughed but saw the sadness in his eyes.
"She's my kitten. She usually likes to go outside a lot. I haven't seen her for a couple days but that's normal for her."
Joann furrowed her eyebrow.
"I haven't seen her before."
"That's 'cause she's great at hiding. She doesn't like new people." Kuwabara said with a sideways grin.
Joann nodded. She had two cats back at home. One was the typical 'scaredy cat' while the other was a warrior. She snickered at remembering the time her cat, Janet, chased a trained police dog out of their yard. Meanwhile, Riley hid underneath their porch. Her smile fell at the thought of the two cats. She missed them. She missed her brother and her mother too. (2)
Her thoughts were interrupted as Kuwabara continued.
"But anyway, I just thought she was hiding or still out doing whatever cats do outside. But some punks got her." Kuwabara said, growling as he clenched his fists at his side.
Joann could see the struggle in Kuwabara's face. He had to choose between his honor code of not stealing and his love for his kitten. She felt anger bubble inside her chest. How could someone threaten a kitten! However, she knew it was a demon possessing the guy and that the little kitten would be fine.
There was a moment of awkward silence.
"Are you going to really steal some mangas, Kuwabara?" Kirishima asked.
Kuwabara stood there with furrowed eyebrows. After a few minutes, he blinked before a wide smile crossed his lips.
"I have an idea!" Kuwabara said, breaking the silence.
He ran into his room, leaving four friends, who were very worried about Kuwabara. When he came back down, he was dressed in some jeans and a white t-shirt. The boys started to leave.
"Hold on, I'm coming with you. I'll only be a few minutes." Joann said.
Joann ran upstairs to get changed.
It wasn't long before the girl came back down. She was wearing dark blue denim jeans. She wore a black t-shirt which had the name of the band Megalica. The shirt was suggested by Kuwabara as it was his favorite band. Joann couldn't help but snicker at remembering how it was suppose to be Metalica but it was changed for copyright issues.
She pulled her hair back into a high ponytail, but a couple strains fell into her face. Despite the 'geekiness' she looked pretty good. Kuwabara grinned as he liked the shirt on her. The other three thought it was a bit too tight around the chest area, although they didn't mind for 'obvious' reasons.
"Okay, let's go." Joann said before the group left.
~In Front of the Coffee Shop~
Kuwabara had a tight grip on the bag that had the mangas.
"Are you sure this will work?" Okubo asked, glancing at the bag.
"Of course it will work! It has to work!" said Kuwabara.
He took in a deep breath before walking into the coffee shop. Joann and the three guys were right behind him. They saw the group of boys sitting at one of the booths. They walked up to them.
Joann looked around and was able to spot Yusuke. He looked silly, or rather in her opinion. He was too obvious with the shades and the manga he was reading in front of him. He did look a bit different as his hair wasn't gelled up. Joann heard something and turned her attention back to the situation.
Kuwabara threw the mangas onto the table.
"Here! I didn't know what kind you liked so I got a variety; now tell me where she is!"
The boss looked at the mangas and frowned.
"Funny, I didn't know you received recites when you steal something? I'm disappointed in you." the 'boss' said as he pulled out a receipt from one of the books.
"It doesn't matter how I got them. I got them didn't I? Now give me Eikichi!" said a pissed Kuwabara.
The boss looked at him.
"It does matter. I'm trying to teach you how it feels to steal. Now apologize."
"What?!" said Kuwabara and the rest of the gang.
"On your knees and apologize."
"Kuwabara won't do such a thing for you!" said Sawamura.
Joann made a fist, losing herself in the emotion of the scene. She didn't understand why she felt so much emotion and why it was affecting how she was feeling. However, she didn't have time to think about it now.
"Shut up!" growled Kuwabara, turning to his friends.
He got on his knees, bowing his head.
"Kuwabara." said Okubo with shock in his voice.
"I'm sorry."
"What was that?" asked the 'boss' with a snicker on his lips.
"I'M SORRY!" shouted Kuwabara.
The boss and his goons laughed. Joann growled feeling as if she wanted to hit one of them in the face. Her fist was ready. But one of the guys held up the little kitten. She froze at seeing the adorable little thing.
"Eikichi!" cried Kuwabara.
The guy was dangling the poor kitten in the air, holding onto the back of her neck. She was meowing. A crash from behind the group could be heard faintly, as Yusuke had fallen over in the booth he was sitting at. Joann ignored that and just tightened her fist.
"How dare you use Kuwabara's love of kittens!" growled Kirishima.
He couldn't stand to see the poor thing dangle as if it was a toy.
"I can't believe the great Kuwabara can be made helpless by this retarded kitten."
"The only one looking retarded here is you." Joann growled.
"Whatdaya say, bitch?" growled the guy holding the kitten.
"Calm down." said the boss with a sickly grin.
"Let's settle this outside, shall we?" he suggested with a twisted grin.
~Behind the Coffee Shop~
"You're pathetic. You still don't seem to understand why I wanted you to steal those books. It was to get you to know what a thrill it is to steal something. However, since you didn't, I will give you one more chance. I want you to hit your friends." Kuwabara just stared at the guy.
"They've been staring at me the whole time; it's really rude."
Kuwabara clenched his fists.
"I...I can't hit them it's against my code and they're my friends! I will never hit them!"
"Come on Kuwabara, just hit us." Said Okubo.
"Yeah, we'll pretend it's those jerks hitting us. We'll get them later..." said Kirishima.
"I can't do that to you guys! " Kuwabara shouted.
Joann stood there in thought. Should she say something? Should she do something? Would it cause things to become worse if she did? She glanced over at the guy holding the kitten. She was debating if she should rush him or not. The boss seemed to notice her eyes and seemed to guess what she was thinking to do.
"Okay, just hit that girl. She seems to be itching to do something stupid." he said with a snicker.
His words snapped her out of her thoughts. She blinked at him. How could he known what she was thinking and how it could have been stupid risky.
Kuwabara also looked confused before growling.
"I can't do that either. Not only is it against my code to never hurt a woman but she is my friend too." Kuwabara growled, clenching his fists.
Joann felt touched at his words. She couldn't help but put her hand to her heart.
"Such a pity." the boss said before making a motion with his hand.
The guy holding Eikichi took an empty beer bottle from the ground. He broke it against a trash can. It didn't completely break as there were sharp shards sticking out from where the bottle broke. He held the jagged end towards the struggling kitten's body.
"EIKICHI!" Kuwabara screamed, his hand out stretched as he had fear on both his face and in his voice.
"No!" shouted the boys and Joann.
Joann growled and shifted as if she was going to move. However, a blur came out from the shadows. Everyone blinked as one minute the kitten was in the guy's hand and the next she was in the air. A shadow seemed to scoop the kitten from the air before landing. Their back was towards both groups, landing in a crouched position.
Everyone stared with wide eyes as the figure stood up. A gasp rang out between the two groups when the person turned, holding the kitten in their arms.
"Yo...Greeting from Hell guys. " Said Yusuke with a huge grin.
Joann let out a sigh of relief. She thought she might have screwed up. She wasn't sure why but the worry was still in the back of her mind.
"Urameshi!" said Kuwabara in pure delight.
The group wasn't sure if it really was the feared yet dead punk. Well, not until Kuwabara confirmed it by calling the guy by that name.
"He's suppose to be dead!" shouted one of the guys.
Everyone knew of the thug named Yusuke Urameshi. Everyone feared the punk, for good reason too. But he was standing there, alive and well. They all knew they were in some deep shit. Their boss seemed to erk at this wrench in his plan.
He growled.
"Don't just stand there; get him!"
His gang hesitated for a moment before shaking off the fear. They charged at the now living punk. Yusuke smirked as he dodged each punk's attack. He kicked a couple of them while the rest he gave a couple punches in their face, with his free hand.
Yusuke jumped back and stood in front of Joann. He turned towards her. She didn't look surprised to see him, which caused him to raise an eyebrow at her. However, a scream from one of the punks caused him to turn just in time to kick the guy in his gut. He turned back to the strange girl.
"Hold him will ya?" he said handing the mewing kitten to a blinking Joann.
She took the kitten who melted into her arms. She couldn't help but squeal in delight at the adorable kitten. Eikichi was adorable in cartoon form but even more in person.
Kuwabara seemed to be happy that his kitten was safe and grinned wide. He didn't hear Yusuke call his precious baby girl a boy. However, he had more pressing matters to attend to. He turned to his three friends. They were all in shock. They were at Yusuke's wake! They had dragged a distraught Kuwabara away from said wake. Yet here was that dead boy. Fighting right in front of their eyes! Helping their leader, their boss, their friend.
"Hey." Kuwabara said, snapping the three out of their shock.
"See these butt wipes guys? Let's flush 'em!" Kuwabara shouted before turning to the remaining punks.
His three friends nodded with determination in their eyes. They followed behind their friend and began to pummel the gang into the pavement.
Joann continued to rub the kitten's stomach, making the adorable kitten purr. A small shiver went down her spine, causing her to look up. She had two guys coming towards her. She snickered as she held the kitten to her chest.
"Don't worry, I got you." she whispered as she cradled the kitten to her chest.
Joann cracked her neck before raising her right hand to block one of the guys punches. She jumped back as the other guy swung his fist at her side.
"Heh, you guy's don't stand a chance." she said with a snicker.
Joann deflected another punch from the first guy, before kicking the guy in the balls. He groaned before falling over, clutching at his injured area. The other guy growled and jumped at her. She moved to the side and once the guy pasted her, kicking him in his lower back. The kick was so strong that it caused the guy to fly head first into a fence.
She grinned, proud of herself. Before the last fight she had almost a month ago, she hadn't fought in a while. She still felt a bit out of breath. But it was at least two years since she last took karate. She was sad when she had to quit. However, work had taken up too much of her time. She wished that she could have made it to a black belt. She was so close too! She was almost a purple belt!
Joann was out of shape though. She was starting to feel a bit light headed and a bit out of breath. She made a mental note to train once this showdown was done. Especially since everything was moving so fast. Soon it would be the Rando episode! If she wanted to help the gang out and fight alongside them, she had to get in much better shape!
"Hey, where did Urameshi go?!" asked Kuwabara.
His voice had broken Joann's thoughts. She looked around and found all of the bad guys were on the ground. The only one missing was the boss and Yusuke. She walked up to Kuwabara and smiled.
Kuwabara looked a bit sad but full of energy.
"I think he went after the boss... " Joann said.
Kuwabara looked a bit disappointed at this.
"Here you go by the way." Joann added, handing over the happy little kitten.
"Eikichi!" he said in delight.
He brought the kitten to his face. She began to lick him with her small scratchy tongue. This caused Kuwabara to laugh in joy. Joann couldn't help but laugh with him, as did the rest of the guys.
Kuwabara cradled his baby to his chest.
"You're not going outside for a while." Kuwabara said with serious eyes.
"You might have to tape off her cat door." Kirishima said with a laugh.
Joann blinked, a bit confused.
"What's a cat door?" she asked.
"Oh, Kuwabara made a little door for Eikichi to go in and out when she wanted to. I guess it's really a doggy door." Okubo said with a shrug.
Joann nodded and made an 'o' with her mouth. That explained how she didn't notice Kuwabara letting the kitten in and out of the house.
"You're right." Kuwabara said with a nod.
He began to walk back home with the rest of his friends behind him.
"Hey, don't you think you should find Urameshi and...you know...thank him?" Sawamura asked.
"I'm sure I'll see that punk tomorrow." Kuwabara said with a grin.
Joann grinned as well before they all headed back to Kuwabara's house, deciding to play some "Altered Beast" on his Mega Drive, aka Sega Genesis.
~The Next Day~
Joann couldn't stop looking at Kuwabara. His head would start to bob before he would snap awake. He hadn't slept too well the night before. It seemed the ghosts were slowly creeping back into the room. Joann hadn't noticed until finding him paralyzed in his bed that morning. His kitten seemed to notice. She wasn't hiding now that she liked Joann. She also couldn't get out since Kuwabara had taped the cat door the moment they had gotten home; before they played video game.
She could tell it wasn't just the ghosts. He had seemed like he was looking for someone. It took her a bit to realize it was Yusuke. He was expecting the punk to walk into the school grounds as if nothing changed. She looked over at Kirishima who seemed to be just as worried as she. He seemed to notice his 'depression' and the fact he was looking for Yusuke. The other two didn't seem to notice it too much. Kirishima and Joann locked eyes. They both seemed to get the same idea and nodded at each other.
They needed to break their friend out of this funk and fast. So when the lunch bell rang, the two rushed off to plan in private. Kuwabara hadn't noticed and stayed at his desk. Okubo and Sawamura had noticed something was wrong by lunch and decided to stay behind to eat with their leader.
Joann and Kirishima went up to the roof to work on a plan.
"So what do you think?" Joann asked the boy.
"I think it's worth a shot. I mean I've never seen him so happy to see the guy." Kirishima said with a shrug.
Joann nodded before the lunch bell rang, signaling it was over. The two got up with wide grins on their faces. They did a side fist bump before heading back to the classroom.
~After School~
Joann packed up her books before following after Keiko.
"Hey Keiko!" she said, catching the girl's attention.
Her two friends stopped and looked a bit wearily at the girl. There were rumors already going around about the new girl. Some said that she was an alien sent to conquer their school and then the world. Other rumors said that she was a former mob boss's girlfriend and that Kuwabara beat the guy up to win her. Other's theorized she had orchestrated Yusuke's death to make Kuwabara the number one thug in their school.
Keiko knew the none of that was true. But she knew no one would believe her, let alone listen.
"Can I ask you a favor?" Joann asked, glancing towards her friends.
The two girls nervously looked at her before turning to their friend.
"We'll see you later." the one said.
Keiko blinked at them.
"Okay..." she said.
Once the two girls were gone, Joann took Keiko's hand and lead her to the school roof.
"So what did you want to ask me?" Keiko asked.
The school roof top was a quiet place. No one really went up there because it was Yusuke's and Kuwabara's turf. Mostly Yusuke's but since the punk died, Kuwabara and his friends had claimed it.
"I wanted to know if I could talk to Yusuke."
Keiko furrowed her eyebrows at the girl. Keiko knew Joann knew that Yusuke was coming back to life, but Keiko had been keeping it a secret. Yusuke had told her he wasn't ready to be found out yet. His own mother still didn't know he was alive! Then again, the woman was either sleeping or watching TV. She rarely checked on him. It seemed she believed her son would let her know if he was alive.
"What do you mean?" Keiko said with a nervous smile and wave of her hand, "You know Yusuke's dead."
"I know he's alive." Joann said with a grin.
Keiko stood there with blinking eyes.
"How?"
"Cause he helped Kuwabara yesterday afternoon."
Keiko stood there. Yusuke had been alive for five days now. It was amazing Atsuko didn't hear the boy play his game system. Sure he kept the volume low. Then again, Atsuko had the TV volume super loud.
"Oh..." she said, not sure what else to say.
"I just need to talk to him. You see, I have a favor to ask him." Joann said.
Joann felt that if Yusuke came out of 'hiding' it would cheer the carrot top up. She also hoped that the two boys would start to hang out outside of school.
Keiko seemed to stand there, thinking about what the girl said. It was about time Atsuko found out about her son being alive. Maybe he will be forced to come back to school. Keiko was also missing the boy at school. She nodded.
"Okay, when did you want to see him?"
"Does now sound good?" Joann asked, her voice sounding pleading.
Keiko thought about it for a minute before nodding. She didn't have to go shopping or anything. She didn't make any definite plans with her friends.
Joann smiled.
"Thank you. I appreciate it." she said, making Keiko smile back at the girl.
"Let's go." Keiko said with a nod.
~In Yusuke's Room~
Yusuke was lying in bed just staring up at the ceiling. He let out a breath. He was bored. He hadn't gone out, except for yesterday. It was the first time he had gone out and he wish he hadn't. Sure, he was happy to kick some punks' asses. Not to mention, see Kuwabara and help him out instead of beating him up. No. He regretted going outside because Botan told him that he was now the Underworld's bitch...basically. He didn't know what being an Underworld Detective meant or what it entailed. But he wanted to enjoy life. He didn't want to waste his second chance at life. Especially working for a toddler god who was still teething!
He let out another sigh.
"What?!"
Yusuke sat up in bed and looked at his closed door. It seemed his mother was finally wake from her all night binge of Ooka Echizen.
Before anything could register, the door to his room slammed open. Atsuko stood in his doorway.
Yusuke jumped in his bed and stared at his mother.
It seemed the jig was up.
"Y-Yusuke?" she softly spoke.
Her eyes became glassy. Yusuke winced. He hated seeing his mother cry.
Yusuke gave his mom an awkward smile and wave.
"Yusuke..." she said, walking up to him.
"Hi mom...I'm back." he said with a nervous laugh.
His mother stood in front of him, her eyes still shining with happy tears. That is, until they turned to a pissed off look. She slammed her fist into the top of his head. He yelped at the pain and rubbed the spot she hit.
He growled and was about to shout at her when she wrapped her arms around him. She hugged him as if he would vanish.
"Oh Yusuke!" she sobbed.
Yusuke sighed before hugging her back.
"Okay, okay. I'm sorry mom. I should have told you sooner..." he said, feeling a bit guilty.
"Awww."
Yusuke blinked before turning towards the doorway. There stood Keiko and Joann. Joann had been the one who 'awwed' at him.
Yusuke's eyes widened.
"Joann!? What are you doing here?!" he shouted.
Atsuko pulled back, her tears gone and replaced with a smile.
"Oh right! Keiko is here with a girl!"
Yusuke sweat dropped.
"I can see that." he grumbled.
"I'll go make us some tea!" she added before leaving the room.
Joann watched the woman with a smile.
'It seems she became an actual mom after Yusuke came back to life.' she thought.
She didn't remember them showing her again after a couple more episodes. She hoped to really get to know the woman.
Joann turned back to Yusuke, who was still rubbing the spot where his mother had hit him.
"So what do you want?" he asked, sitting Indian style on his bed.
"Well..." Keiko began, unsure how to explain.
"I wanted to talk to you." Joann said, taking a couple steps into the room.
"Oh?" Yusuke asked with a raised eyebrow.
Joann was an interesting girl. Yusuke had learned a couple of things about the girl while watching her while he was dead. However, he was still a bit weary of her. There was too much that didn't make sense. He felt as if she was holding back a lot of things and hiding a lot of secrets.
"Actually, I have a favor." she said.
Yusuke raised an eyebrow at this.
"It has to do with Kuwabara..."
"Did he get himself in trouble again?" Yusuke asked, a smirk crossing his lips.
"Not really. He is actually very depressed." Joann said, a frown crossing her lips.
She wasn't going to let Yusuke know about sleep paralysis or ghosts bothering him.
Yusuke raised an eyebrow at this.
"Kuwabara? Depressed?" he said.
He never thought of Kuwabara would be that type of guy. He was overly optimistic to a life threatening level, in Yusuke's opinion. So it had to be horrible if the carrot top was depressed. A dark thought came to his mind.
"Did something happen to his kitten?" he asked, concern in his voice.
Joann couldn't help but smile. Her hunch was right. Yusuke truly did care for the carrot top.
"No. You see...it's something you can easily help him with."
Keiko stood there looking between the two. She didn't understand how Yusuke could help Kuwabara stop being depressed. Sure, she noticed that he was a bit down. But she didn't know the guy for too long. So she wasn't sure if it was normal for him.
"What can I do?" Yusuke asked, a bit interested.
"You should come back to school." Joann said with a serious face.
Yusuke blinked at her before looking confused.
"How wo-" he started.
"Anyone want cookies?" Atsuko said, sticking her head back into the room.
Everyone anime fell in the room. It was so random. Yusuke somehow did it while still on his bed. He sat back up and gave a glare at her.
"Can't you see we're busy?"
Atsuko began to sniffle, which caused the poor guy to urk. He waved his hands in the air.
"Okay, okay! Just don't cry!" he pleaded.
As quickly as the tears were going to fall, they vanished and a smile crossed her lips.
"Okay I'll put them in the oven!" she said before leaving the room.
The three sweat dropped at the woman's antics.
"I like your mom." Joann said.
"I'm happy you approve." Yusuke growled.
"Anyway..." Joann said, back to being serious.
"I would really appreciate it." she bowed her head to show that she was serious.
"How does me going back to school help Kuwabara stop being depressed?" Yusuke asked with a raised eyebrow.
"It's like this..." Joann started with a sigh, "Despite the fact you would beat him up everyday, he misses you. He won't admit it and he'd be pissed at me for even telling you that. He doesn't realize it himself actually."
"Why would he even want to see him? Like you said, I would beat him up like clockwork." Yusuke said.
He wasn't understanding who would like to be beat up. Although, Joann wasn't saying that but it sounded like it.
"I think he thinks you are cooler than Mr. T." Joann said with a snort.
"Really?" Yusuke said blinking.
"He's pretty cool too..." Yusuke mumbled a bit flattered.
Joann sweat dropped.
'I forgot it's the early-early nineties...'
Not like Mr. T still wasn't cool, but he was cool in that cheesy way; in her opinion.
She shook her head.
"That's not the point! You are important to him! And the fact you came just in time to help his kitten, well, his respect for you increased! I bet he assumed you would appear at school. But you haven't come at all! He has been doubting that you are still alive actually..." she said, looking a bit sad.
Kuwabara had mumbled a few things while he slept in class. One of which was Yusuke being killed again. That he wasn't allowed to be alive. That he wasn't the type to hide. So he wouldn't have stayed home unless something big had happened to him. Joann felt the same way, until she found Yusuke sitting in his room just chillin'.
Yusuke looked a bit taken back. He had known the guy since he started middle school. Actually, he had been beating him up since he started middle school. He never knew the guy's name. Not until it became a daily routine. His pals right behind him, ready to console the poor guy after Yusuke grounded him into the dirt.
Thinking back, they had formed some sort of bond. Sure it was made through pain, blood, sweat, and tears...from Kuwabara. However, Yusuke found that he was starting to feel a bit depressed. As if he missed seeing the big lug.
Keiko looked at Yusuke. She began to wonder how long he knew Kuwabara. She never saw them hang out. But she only saw Yusuke at school or whenever he visited her parent's ramen shop. She didn't know what he did during his 'free' time.
The room was silent. Yusuke looked at Joann, who stood there with pleading eyes. He couldn't figure this girl out. Sure it had been a month, give or take a couple days. But it was as if she knew Kuwabara his whole life. It was a bit creepy in his opinion.
"Tea and cookies are ready!"
Yusuke and Joann anime fell, as Atsuko came in with a tray. It had cookies and some hot tea. Keiko stood there with a sweat drop.
'Oh Atsuko...' Keiko thought.
"DO YOU MIND!" Yusuke growled out.
"If you don't want cookies then you don't have to eat them." Atsuko said, sticking her tongue out at her ungrateful son.
His eyes widened. He wanted cookies.
"Okay, okay, I'm sorry." he grumbled.
His mother gave a victorious smile before handing him his tea and letting him take a couple peanut butter cookies. Joann smiled and took a few but not the tea. Keiko took the tea but not the cookies.
"Okay. Thanks for the cookies and stuff but can you let us talk?" Yusuke asked, in between bites.
The woman was about to speak when a noise from the tv caught her attention.
"Oh! 'Panel Quiz Attack 25' is on!" she shouted before rushing to the couch.
Everyone sweat dropped at her antics.
"So..." Joann said, causing Yusuke to focus back on the girl.
"Will you come back to school?" Joann asked, pleading in her voice and eyes.
Yusuke thought about it for a minute. On the one hand he was enjoying no homework, no teachers, and being able to eat snacks.
"Oooo I love the bonus round!" came Atsuko's voice from the other room.
On the other hand, he was bored out of his mind just sitting here and watching game shows with his mother. Not to mention hearing her shout out the answers.
"That's the Eiffel Tower!" came from the screen.
"That is totally Tokyo Tower!" they heard her shout.
"Eiffel Tower is correct!" came the game announcer from the loud tv.
Or rather shouting out the wrong answers.
"Damn."
Joann couldn't help but laugh. She loved Yusuke's mom! She couldn't understand why she wasn't kept in the show!
"Okay."
Joann blinked and looked at Yusuke.
"I'll come back to school. But he better appreciate it." Yusuke said, munching on the last cookie.
Keiko looked in awe at Yusuke. He wouldn't have gone back to school even if she bribed him! She looked at Joann who looked just as shocked as Keiko.
"Really?" Joann asked, in shock.
"Yeah." Yusuke said with a sigh.
"I'll talk to the principle tomorrow morning!"
Everyone jumped at the re-appearance of his mother.
"What the hell!? I thought you were watching that game show." Yusuke growled out.
"It ended. The person playing green won by the way." Atsuko said with a smile.
"Do you girls want to stay for dinner?" she asked.
Keiko gave a nervous laugh as Joann just shook her head.
"Thank you, but my mom is still getting over being sick. I have to cook dinner tonight." Keiko said with a polite bow.
"And Kuwabara doesn't know I'm here. He might be getting worried." Joann said with a nervous laugh.
"Aw, well maybe next time?" Atsuko asked with a pout.
Both girl's couldn't help but smile at the woman.
"Totally." Joann said with a nod.
(1)- I have this take place as them just entering 1992. In the manga the time line is a bit differently than the anime. There is a Christmas chapter and it is stated he is dead for at least a month and a half. So I kinda made it start at January 5 or something. So basically in that area.
(2)- I used my two cats in the story (rest their souls). Janet truly chased a trained police German Shepherd out of our yard. She was just sitting there in the open doorway, leading into the house. Riley had been chilling on our porch, while my brother and cousin were raking the yard. I was chilling in the house getting some water. The dog came through the opened fence gate. Riley hid underneath the porch. The dog then went to the open door/ open screen and barked in Janet's face. She whacked the dog across the nose. Not only that, she chased the dog, jumping on it's back at one point. She chased it back through the gate. She stopped at the gate and sat there haha. Poor Riley didn't come out from under the porch until it was dinner time haha. I miss them *sad face*
(End of Chapter Two)
