Under-whelmed

Calling Her

**May 6, 2014: If you for some reason have been following this story for the last 9 years, please note that the beginning is drastically different. Seeming as how I was a 17 year old nimbus when I posted it, there was never any plans for a plot. I've finally made one up, and rewrote the whole thing. It would probably be helpful (and make me feel better) if you read those chapters again, but the story won't be lost to you if you choose not to.**

Jayme felt herself slowly waking up, and knew instantly that she had only been asleep for a short while. After a moment of trying to figure out what woke her, she stilled her mind and relaxed again, noting with a small smile that Jack was laying on his stomach on the other side of his bed. Only minutes later, as she felt herself fall off the ledge of consciousness, Jayme heard very abruptly figured out what woke her up in the first place.

"The search for Jayme Myles, the 18 year old missing girl from Wyoming, still remains active today. Searchers are worried about the impending frost…"

"Local missing teen Jayme Miles' family insists she wouldn't have run away, though search and rescue are coming up with no-"

"National news today, a parallel FBI case has allegedly been open listing family members as suspects in a Wyoming teen's disappearance."

With a little gasp and a large flinch, Jayme sat up and literally plugged her ears to try and drown out the sound of announcements apparently about her. The noise seemed completely real, as if Jack Sparrow had a television set in his cabin running headlines about her.

After a moment of panic and a few echoes of her own name in her head, Jayme slid her eyes over to her captain, and was glad to see he was still asleep. Now that she was fully awake and adrenalized, Jayme realized how hot she was, and as she tried to get her heart rate down, she took stock of her current state before slipping out of the bed. She was missing all of her clothes this time, but they were all easily accessible and it took her no time to tidy up and crack Jack's door open to leave.

Out on the deck, Jayme welcomed the cool dew of a humid morning, and turned to look out to sea where a sunrise would very shortly begin. Everything was already lighting up in pastels, and it would be relaxing to watch the pirate town shut down and the fog burn off the bay.

Jayme wished for a moment that she had someone else to talk to, some other room to sneak into and curl up in a ball while she avoided sleep, but for the time being she settled for the stairs up to the quarter deck to keep her view of the bay and think back on what she imagined. She wondered if she had just been letting her mind run wild after listening to that crazy gypsy bat the day before. The irony wasn't lost on Jayme that she was trying to explain away something imaginary that had happened in an imaginary world.

One spectacular sunrise and a short and uncomfortable nap later, Jayme noticed a few lumps on the deck starting to move around under blankets, and could hear some new noises from the town as the day lit up and got started.

Apparently out of nowhere, Cotton and his companion silently appeared and handed Jayme a piece of bread and an apple, then gave a nod and turned to walk away.

"Thank you," Jayme said quietly, and smiled at Cotton when he turned back to acknowledge her.

Jayme held both items in her hands and was trying to decide which to eat first when a hand clapped onto the back of her right arm and gently but insistently pulled her up off the stairs.

"What the-" Jayme quietly exclaimed, and turned quickly and fully expected see Anna with some quip ready to sling at Jayme. Instead, though, Jack had already turned and albeit gently, he literally drug Jayme back to his cabin. Jayme was very near giggling by the time Jack slapped the lock to his quarters shut and brought her back over to the bed. "What do you want, Cappy-tan?"

Jack didn't answer, but pointed at the bed and immediately climbed back in himself and apparently set about trying to fall back to sleep.

"Um," Jayme lamely looked around still holding her bread and apple. If he had drug her back to have his dirty way with her, this would have made sense.

"It's going to be too hot to sleep later, and you didn't stay down for long." Jack muttered without moving. "Go back to bed."

Jayme laughed and set her breakfast down on a chair, then added her pants and sweatshirt and in her shorts and tank, climbed back up Jack's bed to lie down on top of the covers. It was already getting rather warm. "Okay, but I don't know if I'll be able to."

Jack was facing Jayme's side of the bed, so he slit open one eye and grunted out a quiet, 'why?'

"I uh..." Jayme very nearly decided to tell him that she had been hearing things from home, or at the very least that she had had a 'bad dream', but finally smiled and closed her eyes for a moment. "I've been up for a while."

Jack apparently didn't really care much for that answer, only let out a small 'hmpf' and slid his eyes shut again. Jayme chuckled again and decided to try and do as her captain directed her and shut her eyes.

..

Some time later, Jayme wasn't sure how long, she stiffly opened her eyes again. She was curled up still on top of the covers, but had balled some of the top duvet up in her hands to hide her face. She was in fact very hot, and quite thirsty, and couldn't help feel a little miffed that Jack had made her go back to sleep in the heat since she didn't have a nice shower she could just walk into to rinse all the humid sweat off herself.

Once again, mirroring her actions from earlier, Jayme redressed and with her apple and bread turned to sneak out of the now empty room. Seeing the deck mostly empty, Jayme slipped out and squinted against the much hotter sunshine, taking a few moments to let her eyes adjust. None of the scant crew seemed to notice her, so she walked out into the day and took a large bite of the surprisingly fresh and sweet apple. She regarded the fruit as she chewed it, wiped a little bit of the juice off her chin and tried to figure out how her imagination had gotten this detail oriented. This wasn't just an apple from a dream, this was an amazingly organic apple that had obviously come right off a tree and even still had a leaf left to prove it.

After finishing the apple and bread and trying to get herself out of her rut, Jayme decided to go find that old crazy lady again. A quick look around told her if Gibbs was on board he wasn't up yet, but this town seemed a fairly mild during the day and Jayme decided to just walk over to the shop herself.

Over the gangplank and up the pier she went, not realizing that Jack had been watching her from where he stood at the helm. Convinced that Jayme would walk to some destination that would explain more about her and where she came from, Jack rolled up his current map and placed his hat on his head before setting off to follow her.

Jack kept a close eye on his mark as she came to a crossroads at the entrance to the town and without much though took a left away from the tavern they had been in the previous two nights. Jayme walked along for a bit before slowing and looking around in confusion. Jack side stepped behind a display of fruit to watch her from several yards away, noticing happily that he could still hear her.

"Hey- Marty," Jayme said, reaching towards the small crewmember who happened to be walking out of a shop displaying knives. "Isn't there some place with a Gypsy around here?"

Marty was quiet enough that Jack couldn't hear the answer, but saw that it was a negative one by the way Jayme frowned and looked back along the row of shops. She thanked Marty and went back to eyeing each shop closely from where she stood in the middle of the dirt road in a nearly deserted row of shop. Jack noticed that it wasn't deserted enough that there weren't two men that weren't his crew members and a small child all gawking at her odd clothing and hair.

He also noticed very unhappily that hidden on the other side of the street, two very large men stared at her with too much attention to be just interested in her clothes. Tribal tattoos marked their bald heads, leather ties wrapped around massive biceps, and their expressions showed nothing but danger. The one closest to Jayme took one tiny step out from his dark hiding spot but before he took his second, his eyes locked on Jack's. Jack took the opportunity to quickly make his way over to his odd little stowaway, glad to notice the two men melt away into the shadows as he did.

Jayme stared at the apothecary in front of her, certain, absolutely certain that this was the purple shop that she had been in with Gibbs. Deciding she had spent enough time standing in a stupor, Jayme turned and saw that Jack was standing directly beside her, just back enough that she couldn't see him around her hair. "Gah- Jack." She said and closed her eyes as she exhaled after being startled by him. "You gotta knock that off. You're like spooky-supreme today."

"Somethin' you need in the market, Miss Miles?" Jack asked, looking at her sideways without turning his head to regard her head on.

Jayme frowned at the name he used but shook her head, moving to walk past him. "No, just looking for that place Gibbs and I went last night." She grinned as Jack spun on a heel to walk along with her with his hands behind his back. She wasn't sure if she'd seen him with the hat but without the coat and she decided quickly that she liked the look. "Apparently my crack-addled brain made that up."

Jack ignored the comment he didn't understand, and made a mental note to ask Gibbs about their trip the night before as he followed Jayme back down the like of shops. He didn't like the look of those men.
