"Okay," said Hiccup leading team B to the corner. "Today we are going to study Thestrals."
"But they're really, really unlucky," said Parvati. " They're supposed to bring all sorts of horrible misfortune on people who see them. Professor Trelawney told me once -"
"Parvati," said Hiccup, sighing. "There's two things you should know. One, I have no idea who 'Professor Trelawney' is. Two, those tales are not real."
"Yeah," said Hermione, "but they are very dangerous. Are you sure they are safe, Hiccup?"
"I'm sure." said Hiccup, getting his bag. He tapped it three times,
nothing happened.
"Err...What did you do?" asked Michael Corner.
"He got the Thestrals out of his bag." said Luna, reaching to one of the Thestrals.
"Right, Luna. Now tell me who can see Thestrals right now?"
Only Luna raised her hand. The others looked around wondering what he was talking about (Except Hermione).
"You can only see them if you have seen someone die," said Hiccup, grimly. "I'm sorry for your loss, Luna."
"It's okay," said Luna dreamily, petting one Thestral.
"Now can you train them if you can't see them?" asked George.
"I talk to them," said Hiccup, proudly.
Hiccup tied tags on the Thestrals' neck for people who can't see or sense them. He told them basic facts, ability to easily recognise the smell of blood and fresh flesh, tracking skills, incredible sense of directions, and their intelligence.
"But," said Hiccup as the DA members mounted the Thestrals. "It's illegal to travel on Thestrals and they can be dangerous if you endanger one of the Herds."
"Herd?" asked Alicia. "Are there more Thestrals in Hogwarts?"
"There's a Herd in the Forbidden Forest. Some of the Thestrals wanted to stay with me. So I let them stay here."
"Hey Harry, have you checked the time?" asked Hermione.
It was ten past nine, so Harry stopped the practice and Hiccup told the Thestrals to go back into the bag.
"Well, that was pretty good," said Harry. "but we've overrun, we'd better leave it here. Same time. same place next week?"
"Sooner!" said Dean Thomas eagerly. He was the only one who hadn't been able to ride a Thestral.
"The Quidditch season's about to start, we need team practices too!" said Angelina, quickly.
"Let's say next Wednesday night then," said Harry, Hiccup nodded. "and we can decide on the additional meeting then...Come on, we'd better get going…"
Hiccup was in the boys Dorm. Harry and Ron were also with him, talking over their meeting.
"It was so cool!" said Ron.
"Yeah," said Hiccup, getting a book on his bedside table.
"What did you teach them Hiccup?" asked Harry, sitting up from his bed.
"Oh nothing, just showed them the Thestrals like I showed you."
"Cool," said Harry.
"How about you?" asked Hiccup, opening the book.
"Harry told Disarming Charm." said Ron.
"You have to teach me too." said Hiccup, grinning.
"How about now?" asked Harry, standing up.
"Now? No we can't." said Hiccup, staring at him.
"I'll just tell you how it works."
"Fine." said Hiccup, shrugging as he pulled out his wand. Harry pulled out his wand too.
"You flick your wand like this…"said Harry, demonstrating.
"Expelliarmus!" said Hiccup, moving his wand like Harry did.
Harry's wand flew out of his hand and Hiccup caught it.
"Good job!" said Harry and Ron together. Hiccup smiled and tossed Harry's wand back to him.
"Thanks."
Hiccup and Harry decided they would take turns teaching in the DA meetings. Harry continued to teach them defence spells while Hiccup teached them all the creatures in his bag, one by one. After they finished studying on Thestrals they moved on to Thunderbirds. Shard loved the attention. Hiccup allowed the members to pet Shard and also feed her.
More weeks passed and soon it was time for the Quidditch match against the Slytherins. Hiccup could see that Ron was very nervous. The Slytherins wouldn't leave him alone.
Hiccup was very excited to see the Quidditch match for he had never seen an actual Quidditch game. Harry told him everything about Quidditch games. Hiccup was still wondering whether the Slytherins just hated the Gryffindors or the Slytherins hated the Gryffindors because they kept losing to Harry.
The Gryffindors walked down to the Quidditch field. Hiccup, Hermione and Ginny walked off to the stands.
"Wow…" said Hiccup as they walked up the stairs. "Hogwarts is truly amazing!"
"Quidditch pitches were typically in the shape of an oval, five-hundred feet long and one-hundred and eighty feet wide, with a small central circle of approximately two feet in diameter, from which all the balls were released at the start of the game." explained Hermione.
When they sat down at the Gryffindor stand, Hermione continued.
"The stands surrounding the pitch are decorated differently for each Quidditch match. Every second stand would be decorated with the colours of one team, and every other stand with the colours of the opposing team. And the spectators sit in between these stands."
Hiccup could barely make out a word of Hermione's speech about the Quidditch stands above the cheering crowd.
"What?" he shouted, trying to be overheard by the cheers and nosies.
Hermione ignored Hiccup and cheered as the teams entered the pitch. Hiccup rolled his eyes and cheered too.
"Go Gryffindor! You can do it Ron! You too Harry!"
Harry looked around at the stand. Searching for his friends, then he saw Hiccup cheering. He could see him very well because he was almost falling off the stand cheering. Harry was starting to worry that he might actually fall when Hermione came up and grabbed him by the arm and pulled him backwards.
Hermione slapped Hiccup in the face.
"Oww!" cried Hiccup, rubbing his cheek where Hermione slapped him. "What was that about?"
"Look where you're going Hiccup Haddock!" scolded Hermione. "You could have died!"
"But I didn't!" said Hiccup, Hermione huffed.
The game started. Hiccup stared in awe at the players. The game itself was pretty interesting but the narration? Even more so. But there was one problem. The Slytherins, they were singing a song. About how poorly Ron was doing. The song was like this;
Weasley cannot save a thing,
He cannot block a single ring,
That's why Slytherins all sing
Weasley is our King.
Weasley was born in a bin
He always lets the Quaffle in
Weasley will make sure we win
Weasley is our King.
Weasley is our King,
Weasley is our King,
He always lets the Quaffle in
Weasley is our King.
Hiccup groaned as Ron lost another point.
"I wish they would just shut up!" cried Hiccup, getting sick of that song.
WEASLEY IS OUR KING,
WEASLEY IS OUR KING,
"I know!" said Hermione, getting her wand. Hiccup tried to calm her.
Hermione was feeling sorry for Hiccup. He was watching the first Quidditch match of his life and this was the worst game in the history of Hogwarts.
"Hey, Hermione?" said Hiccup, waking Hermione from her thoughts.
"Yes?"
"Are all Quidditch games like this?"
"No," said Hermione, Hiccup sighed in relief. "but...I think it could be possible."
Hiccup face-palmed.
The Slytherin Keeper zoomed toward the Gryffindor goal.
"Come on, Ron!" yelled Hiccup.
WEASLEY CANNOT SAVE A THING
"Noooo!" shouted Hiccup as Ron missed the ball at least 30 centimeters away.
THAT'S WHY SLYTHERINS ALL SING
WEASLEY IS OUR KING.
"Oh poor Ron…" said Hermione.
"Harry! Please catch the Snitch so we can end this game!" shouted Hiccup.
Harry zoomed after the Snitch. Hiccup cheered at the top of his lungs. Harry reached out and...caught the Snitch!
"Yeah!" yelled Hiccup "Gryffindors win!"
"Great job!" shouted Hermione.
The Gryffindors shouted along.
Then Crabbe swung his bat and sent a Bludger straight at Harry.
"Oh no," said Hiccup.
