My eyes fluttered open, the vision before me was a little blurry. Blinking a few times my sight eventually cleared up in no time. Though, this little method still didn't make the exhaustion go away sadly, along with the soreness that just struck every inch of my muscles.
Wait a minute. I am sleeping in a bed, all tucked in.
Where the hell am I? And how on Earth did I even get here? The last time I checked, I was with Kurama and the Detective, fighting with that dark demon, and then everything just went black like someone switched the light off. With all my might I ordered my body to lift itself up from the mattress I was placed on. Every single movement that I was making was agonizing. But I did not care at the moment.
I need to know where I am!
I turned my head left to right to look at my surroundings closely. I am in a medical room or some kind, but. . . Is it just me or everything looks so much bigger than it should be?
Kicking the covers off of me I swung my legs over the edge of the bed and then jumped down.
Once I landed on the wooden surface, I finally realized what was wrong. My hands looked small along with my feet and my height. Instantly I went over to the mirror that was on the wall and in an instant, I felt like the soul just left my body.
"What in the hell is this?!" I exclaimed in fury and shock as I examined the five-year-old demon's form closer. Which was me.
This is absolutely ridiculous. How in the world did this even happen?
"I see you're awake." A familiar smooth voice greeted beside me, making my head snap toward the source, only to see a smaller version of Kurama. Features were the same besides that signature red hair of his, which is much more shorter, like back then when we first met.
"Kurama?" I asked, flabbergasted by his new appearance.
"How are you feeling?" He asked me curiously and also concerned which made me want to scoff, but I bit it back for once.
"What is going on? What happened back in the mission?" I demanded, not even bothering to answer his meaningless questions. "And what happened to me?" I questioned as I looked at my hands, my feet, everything that is a part of this younger body of mine.
"Well, it turns out our criminal was a bit more of a challenge for us three, and the moment we got knocked out, we woke up like this." The fox explained while giving out some hand motions that are pointing at his entire body.
"Hn." I scoffed as I turned away from my partner. "Where are we?" I questioned that as well as my eyes looked around the room again.
"In Genkai's and Yara's temple." Kurama explained to me. "Thankfully the girls found us in time and brought us here." I mutely nod my head and turn away from the mirror. From the corner of my eyes, I notice a small black bag on top of the bedside table. I walked over to it to examine it and sure enough I was able to recognize, the kunai bag that belongs to the Little Detective. My hand for some reason went to reach up to it, but I wasn't even tall enough to get the item from the bedside table.
Okay, this is getting ridiculous.
"Need any help Hiei?" I hear that stupid fox chuckled with amusement. If I was not restrained by the exhaustion that is on my physical body, I would gladly rip that amused smirk off of his skull, skin and all.
"No!" I bluntly told him off as I finally managed to jump high enough to get that bag.
"What are you planning on with it?" Kurama asked me curiously.
"Giving it to that Little Detective. " I answered in an annoyed huff as I wobbled my way over to the door with my now small legs which I still didn't get used to. "She will probably need it." When I turned to face the ten-year-old fox I saw some sort of secretive and knowing look on him, which kind of irritated me even further. I don't know what he is thinking at the moment, and I am not going to bother looking into it. But what I do know is that I don't like it one bit. "What?" I snapped at him just as I pushed the door open by sliding it to the side with all I had in this little body of mine.
"Oh, nothing Hiei." Was all I got before he walked out of the room and leaving me alone once again. Although that look on him remained till the very end which just boiled my blood up. Shaking my head rapidly. I just ignored him this once out of the sake of our partnership and mercy, and left the room as well, using the speed that my now young body has. Since I didn't get used to it, my legs got all tangled up with each other, making me trip a few times.
Why am I even doing this?
'Stupid woman.' I can't help but think of it furiously. 'Making me care about her. . .' The thought sounded really foolish to say the least. Again I violently shake my head, to get it out and just be done with it. I was already outside with her property in my hands. Why did she even leave it in the first place? How is she gonna defend herself if she has no water around the area and there is an enemy nearby? But then I remembered how humans can be so forgetful at times. . .
A human. . . Am I really. . . Falling for that human. . . ?
My cheeks warm-up at the thought. I wanted to listen to my brain that says it's wrong to think of that way. . . .
Yet my core deep down tells another story. . .
In the peaceful and safe pond area, Miyuki was playing around with the water as she was balancing on the boulder that was surrounded by the small lake's water. The Urameshi girl moved her hands and legs so elegantly, like a swan that is stretching its graceful wings free, showing those majestic feathers that were pure white like the flame that is dancing within the teen girl's heart-.
A harsh cough escaped from Miyuki's throat, making her temporarily lose focus over her water-bending routine. After the moment ceased the Female Spirit Detective looked at her hands that for some reason began to tremble like the dry leaves in the wild wind. Miyuki took a deep breath from the fresh air and sit down on the boulder she once stood on, already feeling drained from all this little practice of hers. Her chocolate brown orbs looked down at the wobbly but clear reflection the water was giving her, showing the girl's face back at her. Eyes getting a little droopy and face that had lost a bit of colour. In one word to describe the emotion on the girl's expression: Miserable.
The Urameshi girl closed her eyes and inhaled deeply as she tried to once again look for any solution her mind can give at the moment.
'Instead of running away, face them, and fight like a true warrior.' The words of her master echoed in her mind. ' And maybe in that way. . . you can finally reborn into the phoenix you once were.'
"The phoenix you once were. . ." The last phrase ran down on Miyuki's tongue like some kind of a small prayer as her hand subconsciously went up to her precious jewellery. Her phoenix ring necklace that her very first and best friend had given to her. The Urameshi girl then began to remember the times when she and Sanyu were playing tag or hide and seek whenever Shuichi was in the garden taking care of the plants. A small smile painted its way onto her face when the two dragged the redhead into their silly games whenever they decided to do their hide and seek routine in the garden. Miyuki remembered how innocent they were when they were so little. Giving no care of the world. Worrying about nothing at all and just be free from their future responsibilities for the time being while they still can.
The good old days when her she was all fired up. . .
But then the dark times came so soon and took away that one person who gave her happiness. . . who accepted her for who she is, no matter what. . .
And right after that, her spark died down. . . along with the wanting of ever get touch with her feelings again. . . or to get closer to people. . . even though her heart wanted the complete opposite.
But now. . . she will try her hard to learn it again. . .
'I won't let you down Sanyu. . .' She mentally said as she now got back to reality. 'I will do my best. . . I promise. . . to you and to the others. . .' Right after her new vow, a new feeling had settled down within her heart. . . A sense of relief. . . freedom. . . peace. . . Literally, she psychically felt the weights falling off her shoulders. But then suddenly, the harsh coughs came back out from her throat once more, meaning her body still hadn't got used to her newfound elemental powers. 'Crap.' Cursed the female Spirit Detective. Her attention was soon drawn by the dragon-yang mark that is still resting on her wrist, meaning that the person she tries to avoid at the moment is now approaching her. "Hiei. . ." Breathed out the girl as her other hand moved toward the tattoo and traced a finger down on the dragon siluette. For the first time in a while, her heart got the familiar warm feeling back. . . with a small fluttery feeling in her stomach like butterflies just burst free from their prison. And the main cause was the thought of that one Fire Demon, Hiei, who she was connected to by fate. Miyuki, of course, found it ridiculous, but nonetheless, she can't deny the fact that how it made her feel. In a good way. But of course, her mind once again spoke with logical facts, telling the girl the harsh truth that the demon, she now starts to develop feelings for is someone she can't be with. After all, she is human. Not only that, once his duties are done, he will return to his original homeland, to the Demon World, leaving Miyuki behind. . . . 'You should know better than to think in that way . . .' The female Spirit Detective told herself, yet her beating heart didn't seem to get the message.
After a small sigh, the black-haired girl shook her head at the many thoughts and got up from her place. She was ready to go back to the temple, but just as her feet touched the grass's surface, she sensed the presence of someone coming at her. A chill ran down her spine as it detected the small demon energy while her feet felt the vibration that was now somehow a little stronger than before.
Without any second thoughts, she pulled a small amount of water out of the lake and blasted at the approaching person. The intruder got hit and pinned to the tree with the water turning into ice. However, as soon as Miyuki got a better look, she realized who she had actually trapped the very person she just thought about a few seconds ago.
"What the hell woman?!" Hiei growled as his eyes glared daggers at the teen girl, while he tried to wiggle his way out of the ice, that covered his entire body, minus the hand that is holding the girl's kunai bag.
"Hn." Miyuki huffed as she moved her hands slowly in a gentle motion, making the water melt from the tiny five-year-old figure. "Glad to see you too little porky pine." Commented the Urameshi girl flatly, earning another furious look from the much-much smaller Fire demon.
Without any warning, Hiei threw the small thigh bag to Miyuki, who clumsily caught it.
"You left it in the room." Was all the demon teen said in a monotone tone before he turned away and then began to slowly walk away from her. Miyuki was confused and shocked by the fact that Hiei, just woke up and came all the way here to give her weapons back.
"Shouldn't you be resting?" The black-haired girl asked as she sits back down on the boulder that was closest to her and began to tie the small bag on her thigh as securely as she can. As an answer, Hiei huffed out a 'Hn' as usual. Before any words could leave, another fit of coughs escaped out of the girl, making the demon's ruby orbs look over his shoulder and dart to the Spirit Detective's figure. There was a small pause, but Hiei's Jagan eye was glowing faintly under those bandages while his ruby eyes were narrowed, never leaving Miyuki, who eventually caught his stare. "What?" The Urameshi girl asked in a small croaky voice with one eyebrow raised up quizzingly as her arms crossed over her chest. However, her strong and stern look broke by another small cough.
"How are you doing it?" Hiei suddenly asked in a demanding voice, earning a puzzled look from Miyuki.
"Huh?" She questioningly hummed now feeling slightly confused.
"I can't look into your mind unless you're asleep." The Fire Demon replied in a snappy tone. "Since day one, I had been trying to peek in, but each attempt ends up with your wall knocking me out of it. How come I can't look into it when you're awake?" This made the girl's eyes go wide just a little as her expression as usual tries to hold up the stoic mask.
"Well, maybe you shouldn't butt your nose into other people's business in the first place." Pointed out Miyuki as she turned her head away from the Fire demon who let out an irritated huff.
"You're so annoying." Hiei told her as he turned on his heels and look in the distance.
"Why, thank you." The Urameshi girl retorted with a sweet and sarcastic tone, earning a mental eye-roll from the small Fire Demon.
Hiei wanted to just walk away from the area, but for some reason, he couldn't do that. In fact, he wanted to stay there. . . with her. . .
'Why?' The demon boy asked himself. 'Why can't I leave this place? I already did my task, now there is nothing left for me to stay for. . . other than her-No! She is just another human being who needs babysitting. . . But then why am so hesitant. Did I seriously gained respect for her as I did with that fox and this little detective's oaf of a brother. . . or there is something else to it? Something more. . . '
"What are you going to do?" Miyuki's question brought him out of his deep thoughts. "I mean, once you're. . . free from Spirit World?" She corrected herself with a small hint of nervousness and hesitation in her voice that caught Hiei's ears. However, he paid no mind to it and just kept on ignoring her.
"Tsk. What's it to you?" Asked the dmon, showing his irritation quite well. However, when he looked over his shoulder to ease his small curiosity his eyes suddenly softened up a little as soon as he saw the thoughtful look on Miyuki's face that was looking at the lake near her. Silence took over, and it made the Fire Demon a little uncomfortable for some reason. "I will go back to Demon World, obviously." Hiei broke the silence with his monotone and this time not so snarky answer.
"I see. . ." Was all he got from Miyuki as she kept on looking at the pond's shiny surface. For the next ten seconds, things once again fell silent. . . But then the Urameshi girl looked at her marked wrist and finally got the moment of courage to pop up the question she had been meaning to ask Hiei ever since the conversation she had with Genkai. . "And what about. . . this?" The female Spirit Detective questioned as she lifted up her right hand and showed her mark. . . their mark to be more specific into the demon's eyesight.
"What about it?" Hiei scoffed so uncaringly. Miyuki turned her gaze down to the side as she bit her lip, not knowing if she wants to continue on with this conversation or not. The gesture however surprised the Fire Demon since he had never ever seen the girl act nervous or at least show any sign of it on her expression or in body language.
"Well. . . ." The black-haired girl started a little hesitantly as she took a tiny glance from the Fire Apparition's tiny child figure. "Kurama told me that the Marks of Destiny-. "
"Yeah, I heard it clearly." Hiei butted in, snapping at the girl a little. "It won't change anything. I don't need you and you don't need me. We'll carry on our lives as if nothing had happened. In that way, it won't distract or bother any of us."
The words that came right out of his mouth somehow managed to hurt The Urameshi girl deeply on the inside and though no one could see it properly in her expression, her good eye showed it clearly, reflected the emotions her heart id feeling at the moment. But now it was hiding under her black-bangs as she lowered her head down.
Even though Hiei's answer would make sense and all, but still. . .
"You sound like I am nothing more than a distraction or bothersome. . ." Miyuki can't help but voice out loud how she felt at the moment as her memories drifter her to the time when they were in Zankoku's land, having a similar conversation, but with the same topic the two is having right at the moment. This sentence caught Hiei's ears and . . . he sensed that small hint of sadness in her tone. . . Finally he turned to face the teen girl who just got up from her seat and began to walk over to the direction of the temple. The Fire Demon's small hand subconsciously reached toward Miyuki's tall figure, wanting to stop her from leaving. . . and make her stay. . . But it soon fell limply on his side as he stared at the back of the girl and his consciousness woke up. "However. . . Whatever happens in the future, I hope you will find your happiness and inner peace." The teen girl added before looking at Hiei for a split second and gave a pained small smile. It lasted only for three seconds but still, the demon managed to witness it.
With that, Miyuki left Hiei, who looked down at his own marked wrist, now feeling the regret slowly clawing onto his chest.
Never in his entire life had thought that this would ever happen to him. As Hiei was left with the thought of what he and his harsh words had just done, Miyuki was walking up to the temple at an incredibly slow pace that even the zombies would be able to outrun without any problems. As she placed each of her foot onto the steps, she was swimming in the depth of her thoughts, hoping that it would drown her from those words that just came out of Hiei's mouth.
'I knew it. . .' Miyuki thought to herself before coughing a little, again. 'I mean why am I so surprised at all? Of course, he won't care about this. . . He won't care about me. . . But then why does it hurt so much?' But then my mind went to those moments when Hiei would occasionally save her, being held by him or be in his arms. . . The Urameshi girl shook her head violently. 'He did that only to, later on, settle down that score with me. . . ' The female figure reminded herself. . . 'He is only interested-.' Her thoughts were cut short when the ringing of her communicator went off in her kunai bag. Her hand reached down to it and pulled it out. With one push of a button, the top lifted, revealing the screen that soon flashed to Botan's cheery face and sky blue hair.
"Hello, Miyuki! How are you doing?" Botan asked with a wide smile as excitement shined in her eyes.
"Another mission I guess?" Asked the Urameshi Girl, going back to her blunt and monotone demeanour that everyone knows and 'loves'.
"Oh nooo, not this time." The young Grim Reaper said as she waved her hand like it was a fan. "I just went for a small visit to the city and I ran into Keiko." The bubbly girl added with a cheerful tone.
"And?" Miyuki asked dully as she raised an eyebrow. By other people's perspective, anyone can tell that she was not really in the mood at the moment, but the bluenette seems to turn a blind eye to it since her excitement was getting the best of her.
"We talked a little and then she invited me for a girls day out." Botan said, her joy reaching above heavens. "But of course, she wants you to join as well. What do you say Miyu?"
Right in that instant, she wanted to say 'Absolutely not' in reply since she is not really into that kind of stuff. However, she bit her tongue before it could leave through her teeth. She thought for a moment, then her conversation with Hiei came into mind, making her change her mind. Only reason being that she really needed something to keep her mind off of some things.
"Okay." Miyuki softly said.
"Oh, come on Miyu, it will be fu- Wait! Really?!" The blunette girl was about to do an attempt of convincing her assistant, but as soon as her brain finally took the full information in, she was shocked and surprised.
"Only if I can bring Ruby with me." Added the black-haired girl quickly.
"But, of course." Botan can't help but exclaimed as she let out a loud-high pitched victory screech, almost deafening the female Spirit Detective. " Oh, how wonderful. We will see you two at 2pm in the mall." With a small nod of her head, Miyuki closed the communicator, slipped it back to its place then continued on climbing the stairs.
Meanwhile, a dark bird with a size of a falcon followed the girl's figure from afar with its night-black eyes that soon glowed crimson red. Once the human girl was far enough, it began to follow her trail.
