Chapter 15
There was something about the situation bothered Kate and Kara could see that it was. They'd performed an internal sweep of the building and had not found Alice. She wouldn't have gone through all of this trouble only to give up now. All college students, that had been out in the hallways, had been moved into a second lecture hall, so they weren't near any windows and told to shelter in place until told otherwise. Everyone hadn't said out loud how lucky they were that it was early in the morning and the building wasn't full of people.
The two Crows had finished their sweep and retook their post outside the lecture room doors and the two heroes joined them. Kate and Kara decided that rather than panic the students and people inside the lecture hall, they'd use the blonde's x-ray vision to check it first. There was no reason to get everyone in trouble if Alice or her accomplice Tommy Elliot were actually in there.
"The room is clear. I have a bad feeling," Kara admitted.
"You and me both," her friend nodded.
"Check in with our friend and see if GCPD has managed to capture that vehicle and are on their way here," the blonde suggested. Kate nodded again and quickly contacted Luke. He told her that GCPD had indeed caught the vehicle but the bunnies were putting up a fight.
"GCPD is not on their way. Those bunnies are fighting with automatic weapons. Those confronting them have just called for backup," Kate told her.
"Have the Crows called for their own backup?" Kara asked the gentlemen next to them.
"Agent Moore did so a while ago," the first one said.
"I don't like that," Kate gave her friend a look. Those reinforcements should have been at the college by now.
"I'm going to make an external sweep again," the blonde told them. Kate nodded and watched her friend take off.
"So the Girl of Steel…" the second Crow started.
"Is a good friend who offered her assistance. I'm sure you've heard of what happened to Lex Luthor near Metropolis," the brunette said.
"Yeah, despite everything going on here, we heard. Hopefully we can get rid of Alice and then move on," the first Crow suggested. Gotham was plagued by crime but the days of large villains such as the Joker had been long gone, until Alice popped back up.
"Batwoman…" Kara's voice broke into her ear.
"What is it?" Kate asked.
"I need you outside. Alice is holding hostages and screaming if you don't get out here she's going to do something drastic," the blonde explained. It seemed unlike Alice to be announcing such things. As crazy as she was, Alice often kept things close to the vest and did not make big announcements.
"On my way," the brunette headed for the front door. It would take her a few minutes and she couldn't help but wonder what her twin was up to. She radioed to Luke and brought him up to speed. He agreed that something was off and urged her to be careful.
"What do you want Alice?" Kate demanded when she exited the front doors of the chemical engineering department building.
"You know what I want! Give me Delacroix and maybe you get to live another day!" Alice seemed incredibly worked up.
"You do know who you're talking to right?" Kara landed next to her friend.
"You don't have any business here," Alice sneered.
"Wrong. I have a lot of business here. We've caught your bunnies and the Crows are protecting Mr. Delacroix. Now give yourself up and this will all be over," the blonde told her.
"I'm afraid I can't do that," Alice said. She pulled open her coat, showing that things were about to take a turn for the worse.
"Who strapped a bomb to you?" Kate tried to absorb the wiring and electronics wrapped around what looked like plastic explosives.
"Seems like Tommy had plans that might not have included me living," her sister admitted.
"Where is he?" Kate asked her.
"I have no idea. He said if things don't go his way, parts of me will be raining down all over campus. I guess I didn't give him enough credit. Never thought he'd have the stones to do what he did," Alice said. Kara looked the bomb over. She doubted how real it was but she didn't know what connections Tommy Elliot had.
"I'll handle this. Tommy has to be nearby. He has to have line of sight," Kate said.
"And get you blown up? I don't think so," Kara told her. Before the brunette could do anything Kara got up close to Alice.
"You think he really put explosives in it?" The blonde wanted to know, seeing that Alice was not panicking as she thought someone would.
"You want to play a guessing game?" Alice asked.
"I thought you liked games," Kara said. Alice chuckled but it wasn't a confident laugh. The Kryptonian looked closer at the device and could see that it was not strapped to the woman in front of her. It could be removed, if the wires were cut. She was willing to bet that Tommy didn't account for her being there and so Kara made her move.
