Chapter 19
The Crows ducked behind some of the old candy making equipment. Kara used her freeze breath to make the shooters jump back. They didn't stay back for long however and made a move to charge again. The behavior of these unknown people was baffling to the Kryptonian. This time she figured she'd better play a little rough. Using her freeze breath, she managed to freeze a few of the men to the floor. This caused their cohorts to go running.
"I'll go after them! You handle those guys!" Kara shouted back to the Crows before she took off. It didn't take much for her to catch up to the group, but they split off in multiple directions and she knew she couldn't follow them all. Instead, she picked on the one who shot at her first.
He was quick and his skill at dodging was something similar to that which she had seen from Oliver and Sara Lance. While she hadn't known the Green Arrow for as long as Barry had, she knew that he had been trained and worked with ARGUS and the Bratva. He'd even ended up working with the League of Assassins.
The man fired off a few rounds to make her flinch. It didn't work but she figured he had to try. However, it was then she realized it was just a distraction. A smoke bomb went off and she had to use her breathe to clear it. By the time she had done that, the man was gone. Quickly, she used her x-ray vision, but she couldn't see anything but a manhole cover.
"Damn," she went to the lid and easily picked it up. The old lead pipes and the lead in the manhole made her vision useless. Still, she went down into the sewer and listened. She heard nothing. It was as if the man completely disappeared. Not one to give up, she flew through the large old sewer system looking for the man but in the dark and with the sounds of running water and critters moving about, she did not hear footfalls or splashing.
She quickly retreated back to the surface and the candy factory. There she found the Crows in a struggle with the men that Supergirl had trapped by their feet. One man was lying on the floor, not moving.
"Cyanide capsules. We managed to stop the others, but that guy didn't want to come quietly," Sophie spoke up.
"Hopefully his fingerprints will help. I lost the others. They ran away quite successfully and are trained in ways that normal criminals are not," Kara frowned.
"Where is Batwoman?" The African American woman asked.
"She got Alice out of here. I think they might have been after her. We found an awful lot of…" the blonde didn't get a chance to finish as one of the Crows said,
"Blood."
"Yup. Pretty sure these guys assassinated people here. Where the bodies went and why they went through the bother of cleaning the scene…" Kara trailed off and shrugged.
"We have our work cut out for us then," Sophie heaved a sigh. Supergirl nodded. Sophie's phone rang and she quickly picked it up. It wasn't a long phone call and she was about to announce something when Kara spilled the beans,
"They found Tommy Elliot and it wasn't him who strapped that bomb to Alice."
"How did you…?" Sophie asked.
"Super hearing. So, whoever these guys are, they killed Tommy, strapped a bomb to Alice, and tried to make it look like she was going to kidnap Marvin Delacroix. They are good and they are not queasy about killing. If the League of Assassins wasn't disbanded, I'd have started there," Kara shook her head with a frown.
"League of Assassins?" Sophie gave her a look. Between the fact that the woman hadn't been a Crow for more than a few years and Crisis had occurred, Kara hadn't even thought if the history of the group had changed.
"They were a nasty bunch who didn't care who they killed as long as they got paid. They also committed acts of terrorism. Admittedly though most of them used swords and more quiet ways of killing people than guns," the blonde explained.
"So, you have a lot of these kinds of guys in National City?" Sophie wondered.
"No. Mostly aliens and Lex Luthor. The League was out of Nanda Parbat, but they liked to cause trouble in Star City," Kara clarified. Sophie nodded.
"You guys got them handled? I should check in with Batwoman," Kara said.
"Go for it. Tell her to be safe. Jacob is not in a mood to deal with vigilantes. He's already tried to kill her once," Sophie said.
"I know. That's why I'm here. To show him the error of his ways," with a wink, Kara took off into the sky. Sophie had a small smile on her face; glad to hear that Batwoman had some major backup.
Back in National City, Lena was pacing the floor. More than the original three nanite injections had been needed and Brainy was glued to the stasis chamber's control panel after three more injections had been performed. Nia had brought lunch over to them before having to quickly returning to CatCo. Andrea's replacement, Carl Richie, a man appointed by Wayne Enterprises board, had been on the war path and the human-Naltorian hybrid could not stay. Alex had showed up, Agent Smith made no objection, even though he probably should have.
"Lena, please sit down and eat," the redhead was practically begging at this point.
"Yes. Miss Nia was kind enough to bring us something. I think you'd enjoy it," Sandy said. Alex looked at the young woman and winked. A little 'thank you' for trying to help. Lena huffed and finally came back over to the two women. Alex moved them into the nearby conference room and managed to get Lena to at least pick at the fries that came with her burger.
"I know this is probably not my place, but you and your mother don't exactly get along. I'm not saying we shouldn't have tried to save her, but she tried to kill you…" Sandy said, trailing off.
"Yes, that she did and she always favored Lex, but she is my mother," Lena raised an eyebrow.
"I understand. I just…" Sandy stopped herself.
"You, ok?" Alex asked her.
"My mother was murdered and my father left me to be raised by my grandmother. The cops suspected that my dad killed my mom, but they never found him. When my grandmother passed, I was only five, and I ended up in the system. Family has always been an odd thing for me," the young woman was basically matter of fact. There was nothing that could be done about it and she never dwelled.
"Oh Sandy… I'm sorry," Alex couldn't imagine it. She'd had her parental problems, but they differed from the woman's she sat next to.
"Nothing to be sorry for. I have a great foster mom who I still call upon and spend holidays with. I've been told I was loved but the thought often passed through my head that I really wasn't," Sandy said. The young woman suddenly found arms around her.
"Miss Luthor, are you ok?" Sandy asked, surprised her boss was hugging her.
"Yes, I…" Lena didn't get a chance to finish as Brainy busted into the room.
"It's working!" He announced. Quickly, the group left the room to see but Sandy's story stuck in Lena's head. So did Sandy's love of Supergirl, which totally made even more sense now.
