Chapter 22
Needless to say, Lena was not overly thrilled when she woke up in a moving vehicle, Alex behind the wheel. Still, the raven-haired woman was glad for the redhead thinking about her and her well-being. They chatted and Alex promised to pick her up in the morning.
After dropping off Lena, Alex pulled the SUV into the lot attached to her apartment building. She was hoping for a quiet evening with Kelly. Instead, when she got inside, she found the apartment empty and a note stuck to the fridge. Her girlfriend had a night class at the local community college and wouldn't be home for at least another thirty minutes. Since the fate of Obsidian North was still up in the air, and her paychecks had officially stopped, the unemployment paperwork had been filed. Kelly felt that she should look into doing social work. It would be a good use of her degree and a fulfilling career. It wouldn't pay as much as her job at Obsidian North, but it would be worth it.
The class was required since she didn't have a degree in social work. There were a couple other classes she'd need to go for as well to get her certification and Alex was proud of her girlfriend for doing it. Wondering what was in the fridge, the redhead popped it open. Before she could dig through the contents though, her cell phone rang.
"Danvers," she said, holding the phone between her ear and shoulder, while continuing to look in the fridge.
"Alex, it's me," it was Kara.
"Hey sis, how's Gotham?" Alex wanted to know. She'd found some leftover Chinese and pulled it out of the appliance before closing the door.
"Can you do some digging for me? Things have gotten a little hairy here and we've bumped into The Many Arms of Death," the blonde explained.
"Really? I thought they were one of those scary stories you told children at night about," her sister said as she set the leftovers on the counter.
"They tried to kill us so they're definitely real," Kara admitted.
"You sure you don't need some backup?" Alex, halfway through opening the food container, stopped what she was doing. That was not what she wanted to hear.
"No, we both have enough fish to fry. Besides, I have a big meeting tomorrow," the Kryptonian wasn't going to say what for over the unsecured phone line.
"I see well Lillian seems to be better but she's still in stasis. The FBI decided that they aren't waiting any more. Andrea is as stable, physically, as she's ever going to be, without dealing with her arm. Brainy had wanted to try the nanites, but it took so long to figure out Lillian's problems that they didn't get the chance to try anything on Andrea. The nanites should work to save her arm, they figured out a way to not have her body reject them, but the FBI says, that ARGUS will take it from here," Alex explained. Agent Smith's conversation with the Feds had been less than pleasant, but technically the DEO was no more and he had little control over what had happened.
"Oh boy. Ok well I guess I had better get back to National City as soon as I can. Need to keep my job," Kara said.
"You're writing an article about the current receiver of CatCo. I think you'll be fine for a few more days. Don't leave your friend in the lurch," the redhead told her.
"I would never," the blonde was surprised she'd say that.
"I know but I also know you'll want to see this to the end. You should," Alex said. It was then Kara understood what her sister was getting at – do what you must to make sure Kate was safe before you come home. CatCo. wasn't going anywhere and neither was her job – Kate owned the company for now after all. The sticky widget was that having both Supergirl and Kara not in National City was drawing attention to the small group outside the Super Friends.
"Oh, Megan is going to help out around here until you get back. She thought you might appreciate it," it was code for the one thing that J'onn disliked, but his girlfriend did not – pretending to be Supergirl to cast aspersion aside.
"I owe her big time. Thanks Alex," Kara was smiling despite her sister not being able to see her.
"Oh, you do. Good luck and let me know if you need anything," the redhead said, a smile on her face as well. The call ended and just in time as Kelly was coming through the front door. The African American woman moved over to her girlfriend, a big smile on her face.
"Good night?" Alex wondered.
"Even better now that we have a few minutes to ourselves," Kelly smiled. Her girlfriend smirked; the leftovers forgotten on the counter for a second or two as Alex leaned in to kiss the woman she loved. It was the rumble of Kelly's stomach that ruined the moment.
"Ok dinner first this time," Alex chuckled.
