Chapter 26

Kara pulled up to the front of the hotel and parked the SUV. Climbing out of the vehicle, she gently pulled her glasses down a little and used her x-ray vision. There did not appear to be anyone with weapons in the lobby, except Alex. Adjusting her glasses, she strode into the building.

"I would ask why you two came but I have a sneaking suspicion that I already know the answer," Kara said to them as they exchanged hugs.

"Alex said you needed back up," Nia was confused as to why that would be an issue.

"And I'm happy to see you both, don't get me wrong, but right now we're just waiting around. It's possible that ARGUS may have swooped in and stepped on our investigation," the blonde explained.

"I hadn't heard anything about that," Alex frowned. While no longer the director of the defunct DEO, the redhead still had her contacts and would often get updates if her contacts thought it would be good for her to know. Someone actually capturing a member of an international arms dealer and terrorist organization definitely made the list of need to know, even if it was in a different city. Large terrorist organizations could be plotting to set off a series of attacks across multiple cities at the same time. Kara indicated they should head outside and the trio made the move toward the parking lot.

"Well, the Feds swooped in and took one of our terrorists this morning before the Crows had much of a chance to do anything with him," the Kryptonian explained once they had all managed to climb into the SUV and secure their seatbelts.

"The Many Arms of Death is one of the most sought-after terrorist groups. Maybe a Crow leaked it," Alex said from her seat next to Kara.

"Could be," Kara shrugged and quickly called Luke from the SUV's Bluetooth system.

"We're on our way back," she said.

"Good, but I haven't heard from Kate. It must be one heck of a meeting," he told them. Board meetings could run long, it was why once there was one, Kate's schedule was left clear for two to three hours. But since this one wasn't on the schedule until the last minute, everyone expected it to be quick since the board had other obligations that were previously scheduled. The fact that they'd been in there for almost an hour and a half seemed odd.

"I'm getting a bad feeling," the blonde admitted, pressing the SUV's accelerator down further. They had to get on the move.

"What do you mean?" Luke was confused.

"A big meeting dealing with CatCo. and Obsidian North on the same day that our one shot at maybe figuring out what The Many Arms of Death is up to, is scooped up? What's the likelihood?" She wondered.

"A bit of a coincidence, I'll give you that," he agreed. While he was talking to them, he quickly tried to find Kate's phone via GPS. If she was still in the building, then perhaps it was just a long meeting.

"Her phone pinged inside the building, inside the board room," Luke relayed to them.

"If you're as smart as I've been told, you have more than just her phone to track her with," Alex spoke up.

"There's a tracker in her watch," he admitted before quickly checking the location of the timepiece, before continuing, "Gold star for Kara. The watch is on the move, but the phone is not." He was immediately concerned.

"Ok, how do we get up to the board room?" Nia wanted to know.

"The watch is coming down in the elevator! Just get into the lobby!" Luke was highly agitated, knowing that there was no way Kate would go willingly with anyone unless some sort of threat had been made. Kara didn't bother with the parking garage and just threw the vehicle into a street parking spot. The three exited the SUV and rushed toward the lobby, Kara quickly double tapped the gold pin on her shirt and flew through the lobby doors.

"You!" It was then that Kara recognized the first guy, his large hand was gripping Kate's upper arm. It was the guy who had shot at her at the candy factory. There were three others, who quickly whipped out, their weapons from this shoulder holsters.

"You know those don't work on me. Let Miss Kane go," the blonde ordered as she landed on the floor. That's when her backup arrived, now fully dressed in their uniforms. Brainy really needed to help Dreamer and her sister get some nanites.

"No disappearing act this time," Kara told them.

"We don't walk out the front door with Miss Kane and our friends detonate a bomb somewhere in this city," the man holding Kate said. That made them stop in their tracks, but it also made the Maiden of Might wonder what had been happening up in the board room. This wasn't a rapid kidnapping. That's when they heard the sirens. The Crows were bearing down on the building, Luke had called for his own backup.

"Don't make this harder than it needs to be. The Crows get here and whatever they do, I have no control over," Kara told them.

"The message is still the same," the man was stoic. The problem was, The Many Arms of Death didn't bluff. There was a bomb and people were going to get hurt.

"I believe this is what they call an impasse," Kate spoke up for the first time.

"Hardly. These heroes won't risk innocent civilians just for you," the man said.

"What happened to the board members?" Alex spoke up.

"Nothing," the man said but somehow no one believed him. Still, no one had heard gunfire so there was that. Kara looked at Alex. They were both thinking it. If Kara scanned the city and found the bomb, the leverage would be gone from Kate's captors. There was no time to discuss as the Crows busted into the lobby.

"We can work this out. What do you want Miss Kane for? Surely, we can get whatever it is without anyone getting hurt," Alex took over the conversation.

"Doesn't work that way," the man said. One of his men handed him a gun and he pointed it at Kate's head.

"We walk out of here now," he told them.
