Chapter 33

Back in Gotham, Luke got a phone call from Jacob Kane. He immediately headed upstairs to Kate's office, leaving Alex and Nia to man the Bat Computer. Things were quiet and both ladies were a little concerned that it was. They had no idea how it was normally during a Gotham day, but night was quickly approaching, and they both hoped that Luke got back soon.

The elevator activated but as it came down, Mary was the one riding it. They greeted her and she greeted them with some pizza and drinks. The group quickly doled out the food and sat down to stare at the screen.

"You think that Mr. Kane is giving Luke a hard time?" Nia asked between bites.

"To be honest, he doesn't know that Luke knows about Kate. My guess is that he's wondering why his daughter isn't answering her phone," Mary admitted.

"Oh, good point. I hope things are going well over there," Nia was definitely concerned.

"You'll have to explain this one to me – you're worried about Kara? Isn't she like indestructible?" Mary did not know much about Kryptonian physiology, so she was pretty sure those that her sister and new friend were going up against were just as in the dark as she.

"Mostly, but as her older sister, I still worry," Alex piped up.

"Ah the sister thing. Yeah, I have to admit I was in a strange place when I found out about Kate and then Alice," the Asian woman admitted.

"Having Superman bring his cousin to your parents and ask them to raise her is even weirder especially since technically, on Krypton, Kara was the older cousin," Alex told her.

"Oh, that is weirder. Truth be told though, I suppose all of our lives got a lot weirder once we had a hero enter our lives," Mary said.

"Yeah, kind of hard to come home to my girlfriend and explain what my day was like," Alex nodded.

"Yeah, that would be weird. So, are you single Nia?" Mary wondered. It was just chitchat, there wasn't much to do at the moment.

"No, I'm dating Brainy. He's our resident smarty-pants," the human-Naltorian hybrid said.

"Ah so you don't need to explain. Good plan," Mary smirked. The elevator interrupted their conversation and they saw Luke coming back to the Bat Cave. Mary made him up a plate of pizza and grabbed him some beer. The young man approached them and heaved a sigh.

"That bad huh?" Alex asked.

"Well, he interrogated me about Kate. I didn't tell him she went into the lion's den, but I did tell him that she's busy. I don't think he's going to believe that I don't know she's Batwoman," he told them.

"Deal with that later. The Bat Computer is beeping," Nia said without looking away from the screen. Luke rushed over and took a look at it.

"Gunfire reported near the Crows headquarters," he said.

"That's our cue. Thanks for the pizza Mary," Alex smiled before standing from her seat and heading for her suit. Nia smiled and thanked the woman as well and headed for her suit.

"Kate may kill me for this…" Luke trailed off as he handed Alex a set of keys.

"The Bat Cycle?" she asked.

"Please don't call it that. It's the Batbike. That's a better name for it. I've been trying to break Kate from calling it a Cycle for a while," he chuckled.

"All righty then. Come on Nia, we have some bad guys to catch," the redhead called for her friend. Nia rushed along and they climbed onto the Batbike. Luke had punched the directions into the souped-up motorcycle and the two ladies shot down the tunnel and out onto the streets of Gotham. They had no idea what they were riding into; that was the nature of the job. The problem was Kate and Kara knew and they were too far away still to do anything about it.
