Bailey's alarm went off long before she was ready for it to. 6:30 was way too early to be awake, especially for something so as obnoxiously normal as high school. She stared at her ceiling, willing herself to move though she knew it would take more than that to actually get up and get ready. TK and Carlos had asked her if she was excited for senior year so many times that her answer had become robotic, "Yeah, it'll be fun." Whether it was true or not, well, she'd figure it out at some point.
"Bailey, you up?" TK's voice echoed throughout the house and through her slightly cracked door.
Bailey sighed.
"Yeah!" Bailey called back throwing her comforter off of herself and rolled onto her feet.
She quickly got dressed, trying her best to look presentable for the first day. She'd been going to the school for a year already but she still wanted to make a good impression on her first day. Pulling on a light outfit and smiled at herself in the mirror. She felt good but nervous to start the year again. Bailey headed down the stairs where TK and Carlos were waiting. Carlos had made her favorite breakfast, French toast with blackberries and strawberries. She tucked in with no word. Carlos glanced at TK over his coffee mug who shook his head, just as confused by their normally happy daughter's current demeanor.
"So Bails," Carlos said. "TK's gonna take you to school since I have to go in early, okay?"
Bailey looked up and nodded.
"Okay." She said simply.
Carlos was still confused but continued anyway, leaning on the counter so that he could catch her eye.
"I want to hear all about your day when I get home," He said softly. "But I do want a hug before I go."
Bailey looked up, her eyes soft and he could see the anxiety shining there. Carlos walked around the counter and Bailey sunk into his arms. He held her tight for a moment, just allowing her to take comfort in his touch.
"You're gonna be great, mija." Carlos said softly, kissing the top of her head.
Bailey nodded against his chest and he squeezed her one more time before letting her go.
"Okay, good bye my lovely family." Carlos said, kissing TK before grabbing his keys and heading out the door.
TK watched Bailey for a moment and taking a deep breath before slowly eating his own breakfast. There could be a number of reasons why she may have woken up in a mood but he really hopes it's just first day nerves.
"You ready for school?" TK asked, pulling out of the driveway.
Bailey nodded and shifted anxiously in her seat. She tried to hide her nerves but TK could see it.
"You're gonna be fine Bails, besides you can always call if you need something," TK said. "And if worse comes to worse, call Grace, she's on shift and has her cell phone sitting on her desk just in case."
Bailey nodded again.
"I know, I just don't want something to happen is all." She shrugged.
"That's understandable," TK nodded. "But, we roll with the punches."
When they pulled. Up to the school Bailey took a deep breath.
"Hey," TK said, gripping her shoulder gently and squeezing it reassuringly. "Believe you're going to have a good day and you will. Everything's gonna be great."
Bailey was hesitant but she gave him a small smiled and nodded.
"Thanks," She said and TK nodded. Bailey pulled her backpack up off of the floorboards in between her legs. "Okay, I'm gonna go."
"Okay," TK smiled. "I will be picking you up this afternoon and Carlos should be home by the time we have dinner done so I want to hear all about your day."
"Okay, bye." Bailey said getting out of the car.
"Bye kiddo." TK smiled.
TK watched as Bailey walked into the school. It felt strange watching her walk away, but he felt like a proud parent watching her leave.
The second day of school is what decidedly brought sudden scare. Carlos took the school's front stairs two-fold. When the school had called him saying that Bailey was overheating and needed her medication he'd dropped everything and ran. TK had been unreachable and Carlos had guessed that he was on a call. He knew that he always had more access to his phone while out on calls and patrol than TK did, which came with the job. He had to quiet his worry to figure out where he needed to be. He found the school office first and walked inside.
"Hi," He greeted the receptionist. "My name is Carlos Reyes, you called me about my daughter, Bailey Williams."
The receptionist was confused for a moment but nodded.
"Yes, sir, she's still in the gym at the moment, do you need somebody to take you back?" She asked.
Carlos nodded.
"Do you mind running?" He asked.
The receptionist shook her head.
"My TA can take you back, he won't mind the run." She said, motioning for the teen boy behind her who hopped up quickly.
"Sounds good, thank you." Carlos said.
The teen approached him.
"Lead the way." Carlos said.
"Follow me." The teen said, and true to the receptionist's words, he took off at a steady jog calling out turns a few feet before they took them.
When they made it through the gym doors Carlos' eyes immediately searched for Bailey. She was propped up against one of the far walls, a couple of her classmates sitting with her and the teacher waiting patiently with her, trying to keep her talking. The teacher had also brought out ice and was gently wiping what appeared to be a wet paper towel along her forehead. Carlos quickly made his way across the gym floor before kneeling in her line of sight. Her skin was red, her breathing heavy and though her eyes tracked she was falling towards a drop quickly.
"Bailey," Carlos said, putting a hand on her cheek, forcing her head in his direction. "Bails, I'm gonna give you your medication, see if we can't reverse this without calling an ambulance, yeah?"
Bailey smiled weakly.
"Tho-ught I was o-kay." She panted.
Carlos nodded.
"It's okay, mija. We'll just get this medicine in you and you'll hopefully be feeling better." He said.
Carlos pulled the small pack out of his back pocket where he had shoved it after he'd gotten out of his cruiser. It was a lot like that of a diabetic and unfortunately for Bailey, her medication does need to be administered via an injection. Though TK was well versed in administering things via injection, Carlos was not. He'd gone through a few lessons and was "certified" by Tommy so that he could administer Bailey's medication if need were to arise, and the need has arisen. Bailey groaned when she saw the pack.
"Sorry Bails, but rather this than a hospital visit." Carlos said, pulling the medication into the syringe.
Bailey shifted uncomfortably.
"Okay, mija." Carlos said moving to her side and Bailey shifted again, her head falling onto Carlos' arm.
The teen that had brought Carlos into the gym moved to her other side.
"Your Bailey right?" He asked.
Bailey pulled her head up and she looked at him.
"Yeah." She said.
"I'm Noah," He said. "So, uh, what year are you?"
Carlos smiled; Noah was trying to pull Bailey's attention from the needle. It wasn't necessarily the best attempt in the world but it certainly wasn't the worst he'd seen either.
"Senior." Bailey breathed.
Noah smiled.
"No way," He smiled. "I honestly would have guessed Junior."
Bailey smiled.
"I'm younger than everybody," She laughed, her breathing still a bit harsh but with her attention drawn away, Carlos pushed the needle into her arm. She flinched but tried to continue talking. "You're not the only one who thought I was a Junior."
Noah nodded and Carlos pressed on the injection site, rubbing it to ease out the ache that was sure to follow. Bailey sighed and let her head rest against the wall. It took a few minutes but Carlos watched the temperature drop on his phone. He had kept the ice where it was and Noah had moved back to let the teacher take her place with the paper towel again. Bailey was slowly becoming more alert again.
"Hey mija." Carlos smiled, as the color in her cheeks began to return to normal and her eyes fell on him.
"Hi." She smiled.
"I thought I was picking you up after school, not stopping by in the middle." He laughed.
Bailey laughed.
"Now you get to come twice." She said.
Carlos smiled, checking her temperature with the back of his hand against her forehead.
"Well, it looks like we're gonna avoid the hospital today." He said.
"Yay." Bailey smiled.
Carlos looked to the teacher.
"She's gonna be kind of out of it for a bit but if I take her home I will never hear the end of it so if she could just lay down in the nurse's office for a bit, that would work great." He said.
The teacher nodded.
"Definitely. Noah could show you where it is if you want to take her yourself." She said.
Carlos nodded.
"That would calm my nerves a bit more." He laughed.
"It would if she was my daughter as well." The teacher nodded.
Carlos helped Bailey up and while Noah carried her backpack and duffel he also led the way to the nurse's office. She practically fell asleep the moment she laid down and Carlos laughed.
"She'll sleep for maybe thirty minutes and then be ready to go." He told the nurse.
"I'll keep an eye on her officer," She said. "You have nothing to worry about."
Carlos nodded, and even though she was asleep he still placed a soft kiss on Bailey's head.
"Thank you." He said before taking his leave.
When Carlos got back to his cruiser he sat back in his seat and rested his head against the head rest, looking over at Mitchell, who had ridden along just to make sure that everything ended okay.
"Do we really have to go back on patrol?" He asked.
Mitchell only laughed.
"You've got a teenager; you're supposed to be the rested one." He teased.
Carlos laughed.
"Really?" He asked. "So the constant worry stops?"
Mitchell laughed and shook his head.
"I didn't say that." He said.
Carlos shrugged.
"I figured," He said. "But, I love her and I'd do anything for her. Even if I only get ten minutes of sleep a night."
Carlos and TK had fallen into their rolls has fathers quickly and easily and even now after everything they'd been through, he wouldn't change it for the world.
The rest of Bailey's day was crap to say the least. Why were kids so mean? They took what happened to Bailey in PE and ran with it. The name calling, the jokes, the sly comments that really weren't all that sly. She was over it; she was done. She just wanted to go home, lock herself in her room and never come out again.
When TK picked her up she was quiet and shrugged off all of his questions, not speaking at all. Bailey was out of the car as soon as TK put the car in park and walk up the walkway.
"Bailey," He called trying to keep up with her. He only just caught up when she'd opened the door. "Bailey, what's wrong."
"Nothing, I'm fine." Bailey muttered, going straight up to her room.
TK watched Bailey walked right past Carlos who's been waiting to greet her but he swiveled his head from TK and then back up the stairs where Bailey had disappeared.
"What happened?" Carlos asked.
TK shook his head.
"I have absolutely no idea. I picked her up and she was dead silent. Shrugged off my questions, basically gave me the silent treatment. What happened today?" He asked.
"She overheated in PE," Carlos said. "Nothing we hadn't dealt with before. I brought her meds she slept it off in the nurse's office and the school called forty-five minutes later saying that she'd gone back to class."
"Do you think something happened later?" TK proposed.
"It's possible but it could just be that it was an off day," Carlos sighed. "Let's just give her some space for a bit and see what she does. She obviously doesn't want to talk right now and forcing her could push her into a meltdown and then we're worse off than we are now."
TK nodded. He hated to leave it at that but he couldn't argue with Carlos' logic. If nothing else they could handle it when Bailey wanted to talk. But god it bothered him to his core.
