TK sat at the station dinner table tapping viciously at his iPad, searching for ideas for Bailey's birthday. She hadn't said anything about it, hadn't asked for anything, she hadn't even told them it was coming. But he and Carlos had seen in Bailey's file that her birthday was October 14th. She'd be seventeen then and they wanted to make it special for her.
"Gah!" He groaned, pushing his iPad across the table.
"Woah! What's going on in here?" Paul asked walking in from the bunk room.
"I'm trying to figure out what to do for Bailey's birthday and I have absolutely no idea. I've looked up ideas but she's never mentioned anything that she wanted so I don't even have a base to start with." TK said, leaning back in his chair.
"Ahh," Paul said. "I see your issue. You don't know what to get for a sixteen year old girl."
"Seventeen," TK corrected. "Almost."
Paul laughed.
"Of course, my bad." He said.
TK shook his head.
"This should not be this hard." He said.
Paul nodded.
"I think I know what's needed here." He said.
TK looked up hopefully.
"Yeah?" He asked.
Paul nodded.
"I think it's time to call for backup."
"Let's start with the basics. What does she like to do?" Tommy asked.
"Oh that's easy. She loves to paint, I mean anything art related, she's all over it. Reading is big but only certain things, adventure mostly but the occasional historical fiction if it's about a topic that she likes. She loves music, whenever she can she has headphones in. Oh, you know she is the only girl that I've ever met that actually hates shopping. I mean if she doesn't have to go she won't and if she does she'll go to Target before anything else. Well, I guess if it's Barnes and Noble then she'd go every day if she could. I mean she loves her sleep but that won't help very much, umm, she likes to be outside. She uses the back patio furniture more than Carlos and I have in months. She planted a mess of flowers back there; I don't know if you guys have been over since she did it. It is beautiful out there, there's a birdbath and tons of flowers that attract hummingbirds and butterflies. I honestly can't wait to see it in the spring, she really did an amazing job," TK had gotten lost in his own head but when he looked around the room everybody was watching him with soft eyes. "What?"
Marjan was the first to speak.
"You love her," She said. "You and Carlos both. You talk about her with such pride and joy on your face TK."
TK was caught off guard by her words.
"I mean, I'm proud of her, yeah. She's been through so much and she's such an incredible person," He said and everybody just watched him with smiles on her faces. "Come on guys, her birthday is in less than two weeks."
Judd laughed.
"You know everything about her kid, what do you want us to do?" He asked.
TK groaned.
"I know all of this, yeah. But trying to come up with a gift is hard." He said.
Judd shrugged but nodded.
"Okay, well she's always finding places. Like she'll sit in the cab of the ladder truck or in your bunk or by your dad's bookshelves in his office. Does she do that at home?" He asked.
TK thought for a moment.
"I mean yeah, but at the same time she's always moving. And she never has a place to paint. Usually she uses the garage but now that we have two cars at home most of the time she's had to pack up most of her stuff and it takes her forever to set things up. So by the time she gets things set up she barely has enough time to paint, it's kind of sad really. After she moved past the majority of her PTSD she dove even farther into painting then before. I mean if she doesn't have a paintbrush in her hands then she's sketching ideas for her next painting. I was thinking of getting her an easel for her room but there's not a whole lot of free space in there so I don't think that'll help." TK said.
"TK, you guys should set up an art studio for her." Paul said.
TK smiled.
"That's an awesome idea!" He said. "But where?"
"Don't you have a shed in the backyard?" Nanci asked.
"Yeah, we do," TK said, his mind already working through the possibilities. "It's an old wooden shed that Carlos built when he first bought the house. I mean it needs some work. It definitely needs a better roof, weather proofing, and it'd have to be temperature controlled. But I think that could work. There's hardly anything in there, and it's nothing we can't move. The only question would be, is there enough time to pull it off."
Owen raised a brow as his son.
"I'd be willing to help out." He said.
"I'm in," Judd said. "I've got some old spare bits and pieces from when I built the extension onto our living room a couple years ago. There's got be a good amount of wood and enough roof tiles for a shed and I've got a friend who can get us a good deal on anything we need to insulate it and everything. And Grace has been buggin' me to ask you when she can take Bailey out so this would be a great excuse."
"I can swing a hammer." Paul said.
"Tell me what to do and I'll do it." Mateo smiled.
"I'm in too, anything to keep my hands busy." Marjan said.
"I'm not great at carpentry but I can definitely help decorate once it's done." Tommy said.
"Yeah, me and hammers do not mix," Nanci shuddered. "But I'm pretty good with a paint brush and know some good art supply stores."
TK looked at his team in awe.
"Are you guys serious?" He asked.
"TK, that girl is part of this family," Judd said. "And for family, I'd do anything."
The 126 nodded their agreement and TK smiled so wide it hurt.
TK and Carlos looked around their backyard with wide smiles.
"I can't believe this is actually happening." TK said, shaking his head.
Carlos smiled.
"Me neither," Carlos laughed. "How on Earth did you even come up with this?"
TK shook his head.
"I didn't, Paul did." He said.
"Nah nah, don't you be sayin' that," Paul called over from the shed roof. "I might have set you on the path but you did the walkin' all on your own."
TK furrowed his brow.
"What does that even mean?" He asked.
"I means that you came up with the general idea on your own. Paul just said what you were already circling." Judd said.
"Okay that still makes no sense," TK said. "Can we just agree that it was a team effort and leave it at that?"
"Yes," Carlos said. "Please."
TK laughed and pushed his boyfriend's shoulder playfully.
"Come on Strand, Reyes, we're helping you guys out with this, the least you could do is pick up a hammer and help." Tommy said, throwing a glove in the couple's direction.
"Right, sorry." Carlos said, grabbing TK's shoulders and walking them both down to hop back into the building.
Every member of the 126 stood back and admired their hard work. The shed had come together beautifully and just in the nick of time. It had been a week-long project and it was 8:00 the night before Bailey's birthday but it was done.
"I can't believe this went up so fast." TK chuckled.
"I don't know what was harder, building the thing or trying to explain to Bailey why she couldn't go out to the backyard all week." Carlos laughed.
"I thought the pesticide story you came up with was great." TK said.
"Yeah, well I had to come up with a way to keep her from coming out to water the plants every day before and after school," Carlos said. "And Judd, please tell Grace that we owe her big time for all of the help she's been keeping Bailey out of the house."
Judd laughed.
"You and I both know that Grace was more than happy to spend time with that girl of yours," He said. "The number of stories I have heard once I get home is insane. You're doing an amazing job with her."
TK and Carlos smiled.
"I think she came to us like that." TK smiled.
Owen smiled and shook his head.
"Partially maybe, but she's opened up a lot since moving in here and a lot of that has to do with you two." He said.
TK and Carlos smiled proudly. They had a good one and they could only hope that they could do her justice.
