Two months later...
Life returned to a normal rhythm for the pair, but there was an underlying happiness between them that they were surprised at when they got home. They were husband and wife now. They were a family unto themselves. Now they had to decide what they were going to do with Fitz's residency, should he stay or take the position in California at Stanford.
"Babe, we have to decide now what we are going to do. I am not going to do long-distance with you. So, I think I should just stay here and do my residency while you finish your internship."
Olivia paused for a moment.
"Captain, I've been doing some research and I reached out to Stanford Medical School and they are willing to let me transfer. So, you can go ahead and tell them yes."
"Wait! Liv, but what about Harvard?"
She put her fingers over his lips.
"If anything taught me the last two months is that change is good, and sometimes the best things in life are when you get off the path sometime. I've never been to the West Coast and I think that with everything that happened, we both need a new start."
Fitz walked over to where she was sitting and picked her up and kissed and hugged her.
"Thank you! Stanford is the best pediatric residency in the country."
"Knowing you, I thought you might want to sacrifice the opportunity, but we both want the same thing for each other, and that is what's good and fair."
Fitz shook his head.
"Now that we have that settled. What do you want to do with our townhouse?"
Olivia walked out of Fitz's arms for a bit to pace.
"I think we should take a page out of your Mom's book and rent this out. I don't think we will live here again anytime soon and I don't want this to go to waste, and we can save money as well. And don't hit me with you have a sizeable inheritance. We are going to do things on our own, with the money we make."
"Aie, Aie, Captain!"
She slapped his arm and laughed.
"Speaking of that. What do you want to do with the money? You know I will receive a chuck this coming June."
"How about we create a foundation and give the money away, but we need to keep a bit for our children's college."
"Oh, you don't have to worry about that. Mom has a trust fund already set up for our kids. Believe me, when I say, the money in there could support at least five more generations of Grants."
"OK, now you have my attention. Just how much are you getting in June?"
Fitz folds his hands together.
"About 100 million and another when I turn thirty-five."
Olivia plops down on the couch.
Fitz rushes over to her and kneels down and takes her hands and rubs them until she comes back to him. She shakes her head letting him know that she is back.
"Livie, I've been thinking about what you want to do after we finish all our training, and I think we should use the money to establish a foundation that deals with medical issues that are unique to Africa. If we do it now, we can be way ahead of the game when we get to Africa. What do you think?"
Olivia got up and slowly paced back and forth mulling over what he was proposing. Then he could see it starting to bubble up. She turned to him with a big smile on her face.
"Let's do it! We are going to be our own little Bill and Melinda Gates!"
She ran over and jumped into her husband's arms and kissed him like there was no tomorrow.
They finally made it to the end of Fitz's internship and they were packing up the house to move. Fitz had left the week after he finished to find a place for them to live while they were in California. Jake and Olivia were the ones packing up the house. Jake was sad that this would be the first time in their lives that he and Fitz would not be together. Olivia could tell that Jake was a little down and she understood what this move would mean to the three musketeers. They were packing up the kitchen when Olivia decided to approach him.
"So...are you having a moment about Fitz and I moving away?"
Jake smiled.
"Only you would bring up feels with using the word moment."
They both laughed. Olivia put her arm around his waist and walked him to the two stools at the island in the kitchen. They sat down for a sec to gather themselves.
"Fitz has been more than a brother to me. He's my best friend who I can tell anything too. He knows that me and my Dad don't get along and going over to his house when things got ruff for me, he always allowed me to be me. He's watched my back and he's pulled me back from some destructive situation."
Olivia grabs his forearm and squeezes.
"I know you two have been more than cousins, so I think a little good news might cheer you up, the bonus is that Fitz doesn't know yet."
Jake perks up.
"Lay it on me sister!"
"I'm pregnant."
Jake blinks and his lips form an O. It takes about a beat before his lips start to turn into a smile. He starts to shake his head up and down then he leaps out of his chairs and starts to yell at the top of his lungs as he dances around the island. When she thinks he's about to pass out he abruptly turns to her.
"I've got to be there when you tell him, at least film it!"
"My thoughts exactly!"
"When did you find out?"
"Two days ago. I think I'm going to be one of those unicorns that don't have any real symptoms."
"Then how did you know something was up?"
"I missed my period for two months in a row."
"Whoa, whoa! Don't say the P-word."
"Jeeze! What are you like two."
"No, but your my brother's wife, and I don't need to hear all the details."
"Whatever. I think I'm going to tell him when he gets back this weekend. I need you here to either set up some cameras or film it yourself."
"Cool! On it. While we are talking about all this. Let's make a bet. Twenty bucks say he faints."
"You're on! Twenty on the same reaction you gave."
They both spit on their palms and shook, and laughed.
Two days later...
Fitz had just gotten back from California and he was clueless to what was coming. She and Jake had decided that he would come over on Saturday afternoon to help with the last of the packing. So there they were boxing up the last bit of things when Olivia called lunch for them all. She had ordered take out and the few beers left in the frig were cracked open by Fitz and Jake. Olivia went into the other room while Fitz and Jake were talking in the kitchen. Jake had slid his phone on the island pretending to check his messages.
"Hey babe, I found this t-shirt of yours and I'm not sure if we should throw it out or keep it."
Fitz put his beer down and reached for the shirt.
He read what was on it, then looked at Olivia, then read it again everything went black for him.
"HA! You owe me twenty bucks sucker!"
"OK, now is not the time to collect on our bet, can you help me pick him up and move him to the couch?"
"Ooh, sorry!"
They dragged him over to the couch. Jake went and got him a glass of water and a wet rag. He never let go of the shirt. Olivia dabbed his head with the rag until he woke up. Jake gave him the water before he spoke. He set the glass down looked at the shirt again, then Olivia. He started to cry through his silly laugh.
"I'm going to be Captain Papa Bunny!" He jumped up and took Olivia in his arms and just hugged her and cried. Jake walked back into the kitchen to give them privacy.
After a while, Fitz sat back down and pulled Olivia into his lap.
"How long have you known?"
"About four days."
"And you didn't tell me then, I would have come home right away."
"I'm not sure you were paying attention in medical school, but the baby will be here in about seven in a half month, so we have time."
"Ha, ha! I know that woman! I want to always be there for you and our family."
"Nah, your good. Plus, I owe that jerk Jake twenty bucks."
Fitz laughed.
"And why pray tell do you owe Jake money?"
"Cause he said you would faint. I said you would just do a happy dance around the kitchen like he did when I told him."
Fitz pulled Olivia up to look in her eyes at the revelation. Olivia put her finger over his mouth before he could say anything.
"One, Jake was feeling really down about us leaving, and two we had to get this on video."
Fitz laughed out loud and pulled his wife close and put his hand on her stomach.
"You two are something else."
"Who else do we tell? Or do you want to wait? You do know that my Mom is moving to California with us now."
Olivia giggled because she knew it was true.
"Let's call my parents and then we can call your parents because I know Vanessa will come over or do you want to go over there. I bought them little gifts to tell them too."
"Let's go over, I want to be as mean like you and Jake and surprise my parents."
"Let's not say we were being mean but having a little fun at your expense."
"Works for me."
Later in the evening...
Olivia and Fitz asked if they could come over for dinner with his parents after Olivia called her parents and gave them the news. Her mother cried the whole time they were on facetime with them. She said she was breaking the truce and coming to California to see her first grandchild. Olivia wanted her mother to be there so much, but she didn't want them to give up their home. They would wait and see and talk to Grandpa Dan and see what he could negotiate with the family. Maya was sure this would be OK with the family since it was kin coming into the family.
Fitz and Olivia were in the car out front to his parent's house.
"So, what is the plan to spring this on them. I want some fainting and some ugly crying after we announce."
Olivia looked at her husband like she didn't know him.
"Why on God's green earth do you want all of that?"
"Cause, I don't want to be the only pansey who passed out."
Olivia laughed hysterically at her husband. After she dried her eyes and could speak.
"You are so twisted in such a sweet way."
Fitz grinned at his pregnant little wife.
"So, again what is the plan. Do we just give them the little t-shirt, and coffee cups, or we torcher them with clues."
"OK again, not sure who you are right now, but your Mom will actually kill you if you drag this out. She doesn't even hint at wanting a grandbaby, she comes right out and says it."
"Your right. She can be very ruthless when it comes to grandbabies."
"Let's go in say hi and just give them the gift bag."
"Smart move Little Woman. I knew there was a reason I married you."
"Just get out of the car dufus."
They both walked up the door and rang the doorbell. Fergus opened the door.
"Welcome, Mr. Fitz and Mrs. Olivia."
Olivia walks in and gives Fergus an awkward hug she always gives him now. She just loves the ability to make him feel weird. Fitz snickers at the interaction. Once Olivia lets go, he gives him a handshake.
"Must you two be so affectionate. I have a reputation to uphold."
They both laugh. And say at the same time. "We know."
He shakes his head and steps aside to let them in.
"Where is one of my best girls hiding out?"
"In the kitchen Mr. Fitz, she is almost done making your favorite dessert."
That was all he needed to say and off he fast-walked to the kitchen dragging Olivia along.
"Mama! Fergus told us you were making my favorite."
Vanessa looked up and wiped her hands on her apron and came around to hug her son, then gathered Olivia into her own big hug.
"I'm glad you asked to come over, I wanted to see as much as I can before you abandon me to your father."
"Don't say it like that Mom. I actually came to tell you that I found a place not too far from your family's home in San Francisco, well closer than Boston, but close. It's in Belmont. It's almost equal distance from San Francisco and Stanford. I knew you would visit more when we moved out. Where is Dad?"
"In his office, go get him. Dinner is ready."
"Sure thing."
Fitz trotted out of the kitchen while Vanessa and Olivia caught up about how far along she was with the move.
"I told Fitz that I would hire some folks to pack and move you."
"No, that's fine. We saved up all spring semester to pay for the move."
"Livie, darling. You do know that Bunny is worth a king's ransom?"
"I do, but we both work and we can afford anything we need. Plus we have decided to turn his inheritance into a foundation."
"God! You two are too cute for words. I am very proud of both of you and if you need a donation I'll send you a blank check."
Olivia laughed because she knew it was going to happen regardless. Fitz returned with his Dad in tow. Olivia gave him a kiss and a hug, hello and they all moved toward the kitchen banquette to eat.
"What's that in your hand, Olivia?"
She looked at Fitz and he gave her the go-ahead nod.
"It's a little something for you and Gerry."
She hands over the gift bag and they pull out coffee cups with little onesies in each. They both read what's written on the cups.
"Grandma"
"Grandpa"
They both look at each other, then Olivia and Fitz. Fitz had been filming the whole exchange. Then tears well up in Vanessa's eyes as she looks at her baby. Fitz is overcome as well looking at his mother's reaction. Gerry just starts from a bright grin to a full-on laugh. Vanessa got up and hugged Olivia, then she hugged her son. Gerry did the same. After hugs all around they sat back down to look at the rest of the gift. It had Grandma's little helper on the front and Granpa's little slugger on the other.
"You do know we are moving to California now."
"No Mom, that never crossed my mind at all."
She threw her napkin at her son and laughed.
After all the excitement died down, they ate their meal and discussed their move out west.
