Lancer.
Ravel was instantly far more terrified of this woman than she was even of Mordred. Mordred had broken her body, mind, and spirit during her test and she only passed due to her being able to overcome her broken spirit and get her fighting spirit back. During Mordred's test, her life had actually been in real danger and failing the test would have meant that she would have been killed by the knight of rebellion.
Lancer just sitting across from her was far more terrifying.
"Ravel Phenex, introduce yourself properly to me. I'll give you the time to speak, consider this less of a test and more me getting to know you."
Lancer's words were somewhat filled with kindness, but they had very little emotion to them that would give anything away. They were the words of a kind and perfect king, one that had lost most of their humanity.
'... That's why she is terrifying... Even devils have humanity to them, even Mordred had humanity... but this woman. It's like she abandoned everything to obtain everything.' Ravel didn't know what to say out loud. When she opened her mouth, no words would come out for fear that she be stricken down like a dog.
Her fear was a fear of the unknown, because she had no way of knowing how this woman in front of her would even begin to react to her.
"Servo Evocazione Alter: Saber."
Ravel watched as the woman glowed brightly, before her body changed shape and got much smaller. Her overpowering aura changed as well, and she seemed far more... agreeable to Ravel when the glowing stopped and the woman before he looked far different. Instead of wearing armor, her smaller body changed into a blue warrior's dress with light armor.
"... How did you do that?" Ravel didn't sense any magic being used to transform the woman.
"I changed my class with the Balance Breaker, unlike other Sacred Gear's Balance Breakers that involve the owner activating them. Servo Evocavione's Balance Breaker is achieved by the Servant activating it. I changed my Class from Lancer to Saber... I honestly feel this form is better for us to talk with." Artoria smile had much more warmth to it than before. It was like she had gained more emotions than she had before, as if she had yet to completely lose her humanity at this point.
No, she had thrown away her humanity, but this was far before she was able to completely rid herself of it.
"... That's..." Ravel didn't want to say impossible, but she clearly was wrong. "Why is this form more important to test me?" Ravel wanted to know that answer.
Artoria frowned.
"It's a form I should never show Naruto, but it is this form where I first could say I loved him. As a Lancer, I still love the boy... but this form is more special. So, introduce yourself, lets see how worthy you are." Artoria just smiled and waved a hand to Ravel. This was far less about her than it was about the younger girl. "Tell me everything you feel comfortable sharing, and once you're done I'll pass judgement on you." Artoria rolled her hand around.
Ravel gulped.
"Well... I'm Ravel Phenex, I'm 15 years old. My hobbies are time managment, reading, and studying combat strategy and how it can be used to maximize efficiency while attaining the best results with the least amount of lost stamina. I want to be known, one day, for my intelligence and show that just because I was born with Phenex abilities, doesn't mean they are all that define me." Ravel started off with what she believed were her favorite parts about herself.
Her intelligence.
Among young Devils, she consistently ranked higher than even the likes of Rias and Sona when it came to her levels of thinking power. She never cared about getting a Peerage of her own, so she never asked her parents to give her the Evil Pieces for one. She had honestly felt that her powers would be far more useful if she were to join the Peerage of another person, since as a High-Class Devil from birth she couldn't be considered a slave to anyone even if she joined a Peerage. With her natural abilities enhanced even further by joining a Peerage, she could gain even more combat power than any of her brothers.
Joining a Peerage had nothing but benefits to her.
"Well then, let me ask you about that. You're very intelligent, but you have an attitude problem and are very arrogant. Looking at you, I can tell that you have much growing to do as a person. How does that make you feel?" Artoria asked her.
Ravel was given reason to pause.
"... I understand that I have anger issues sometimes, and it can cloud my judgement. You see, but no matter what, I want to do everything in my power to further my own ambitions. I do want to change for the better, but lately I've been forced to realize just how much I've relied on my natural born powers... I don't really know how to change." Ravel could recall both her tests with Mordred and Berserker.
Mordred, she was coming to realize, had held back when it came to killing her. The woman could have killed her at absolutely any time during their Test, but because Mordred didn't seem to really care about her life, she didn't make an active choice to purposely kill her as fast as possible.
Berserker could have killed her to, but Ravel understood that she could have fought back against Berserker and possibly won.
"Why Naruto?" Artoria asked Ravel.
"... He's like me I guess, when I saw him at the school... no, even before when my brother's familiar spied on Rias' peerage, I could see he was different. He had something I lacked, and I have something he lacks. I feel that together, in marraige, the two of us can truly reach our full potentials and achieve our ambitions. When I looked at him, I saw somebody who could one day rule over the Underworld." Ravel didn't hold back. She could tell that if she spoke any lies, that this woman would be able to tell and would instantly fail her for it.
"Not love?"
"I do like him, he's handsome and despite his rough behavior, I can tell he's very kind. He just doesn't know how to show it to others well. Do I love him right now... no, I don't." Ravel shook her head in admittance.
"Can you?" Artoria pressed her.
Ravel didn't need to think about that much.
"I believe I can, and I don't think it will be that hard to fall for him. He's strong, determined, kind and... very foolish. I think he needs me, it's like what Caster tested me on. Naruto has the potential to go great things, but he can't do it alone. He needs somebody like him, somebody who will stop him from hurting himself and ending his own ambitions." Ravel could see Artoria was considering her words with a neutral line to her lips. She seemed to be looking over her face as well, trying to discover any amount of falseness in her words.
Artoria nodded her head after a moment.
Then she shook her head.
'This girl... she's extremely intelligent. She didn't just pick Naruto out of convenience, in her mind she really did chose Naruto because she believed that together they could both be happy and achieve great things.' Artoria admitted to herself that was a good way to decide an arranged marraige.
Doing what was best, to achieve the absolute best outcome with the least amount of risk was a great quality for somebody in power to have.
"Continue telling me about yourself then, I feel I understand your reasons quite well. Actually, first let me inform you of some things... I was there when the Uzumaki clan was destroyed." Artoria dropped a bomb.
Ravel dropped her tea cup in response.
"WHAT!?"
"I was there, with Naruto's mother as the Uzumaki island was attacked by Devils and Homunculus alike. I was there, in this form, when Naruto was born and I was the one who escaped that island with him in my arms... I am the reason Naruto grew up alone and unloved. The way Naruto is today, is all my fault... those scars on his cheeks, I gave them to him." Artoria spoke with sadness, but hid her sadness behind a mask of neutrality.
She tested Ravel's reaction.
Ravel just sat still, stunned.
"... What... how..."
"There is a Prophecy told among the Uzumaki clan, that one day a young boy with golden hair and blue eyes would either become the Savior or Destroyer of all intelligent life. To combat this, the Uzumaki clan had a rule to never introduce blond hair into their bloodline. Well, I believe that the prophecy got out... and it just so happened that Naruto's father... well a paternity test confirmed that golden hair had been introduced into the bloodline." Artoria spoke with grit teeth.
It was her fault.
Not only had she led her own kingdom to destruction, but she had assumed her status as Servant meant that what she did with Kushina would have no ill effects. She had fully believed though that after learning of the prophecy, that her son would bring force great changes for the good of the world.
"So... the Uzumaki clan was destroyed-"
"Because people were afraid, not of the Uzumaki... but of the child born with golden hair. The prophecy leaked out to others outside the clan, as did the knowledge that a child who could have golden hair would be born. The Devils who attacked the Uzumaki clan... were trying to save the world, by killing Naruto before he was born." Artoria spoke seriously.
As of right now, there were only 4 people with this knowledge. Ravel Phenex, Azazel, Merlin, and herself.
Only the Leaders of the Devils who had attacked the Uzumaki clan had known the reason why they were attacking, and she herself had killed them as Kushina was giving birth. The rest had been informed that they would be saving the world, but they had never known what they were saving the world from.
"Wait, then it... Naruto's father... is the reason the Uzumaki clan..."
"Oh, you're not blaming Naruto?" Artoria was interested in Ravel, instead of blaming Naruto, was blaming her for what happened. That was a far more fitting reaction than what she had been expecting. "If Naruto had never been born-"
"Shut up! You don't understand anything if you think Naruto is to blame! A baby doesn't make the choice to be born, so you can't put any of the blame on him for something he didn't make the choice to do!"
"Then... you understand why I'm going to Fail you, don't you?" Artoria asked Ravel with a sad smile.
In all honestly, she liked Ravel and would approve of her.
"I... I'm going to fail your test?"
"Yes, I decided that if I believed Naruto could ever come to love you, that I would fail you. I like you, you're a very good girl... just like how I like Asia Argento. But, you see... I can't trust either of you not to destroy the world." Artoria spoke with a now audibly sad tone.
"I would never-!"
"You have golden hair and blue eyes Ravel Phenex, a child born between you and Naruto would still fit the conditions of the prophecy. An Uzumaki born with Golden Hair and Blue Eyes, and while I'm sure the prophecy meant for Naruto, I have some doubt." Artoria looked at Ravel.
Ravel was angry and stood up.
"Well fuck you then."
"Excuse me?" Artoria was a little shocked.
"Fuck you! I don't care if you pass or fail me, how can I back down when I know that Naruto's full potential is to save the world!? Instead of backing down, I want to be a supporting pillar for Naruto! I'll help him every step of the way to save this world, and one day when our children are born... they will continue to save the world. One day, the Uzumaki clan will rule the world and under that banner will an everlasting peace be born! It WILL be known that the union between Ravel Phenex and Naruto Uzumaki was the catalyst that saved the world, so FUCK YOU!" Ravel flipped Artoria off.
Artoria stood up.
Her body glowed and she turned back into her Lancer form, towering over Ravel as she showed the girl just how much larger she was than the girl in every way. Ravel stepped back in fear, and she remembered who she was talking to.
"Say that again."
"F-f-fuck you... I don't care how scary you are... I have faith in Naruto, and myself... something you clearly don't have." Ravel was cowering, but she still managed to speak.
Anger was a hell of a form of motivation.
Lancer looked at Ravel.
"There is nobody in this world who has more faith in that boy than me. So, now that I have a full understanding of who you are Ravel. I am more certain than ever before that I need to fail you. I will go report this to Naruto." Lancer was done with her interview of the girl. Now that she had her answer, she knew that supporting Ravel and giving her a pass was something she absolutely could not do.
As Naruto's father, she needed to do this.
