Harper strolled down the corridor and over to the wooden front door with Zeke in tow, nervously tiptoeing behind her and frantically looking around the desolate hallway. He inspected the plain beige walls and cream carpets before whispering in Harper's ear, "are you sure Alex and Mason won't mind if I help you babysit?"
"Nah, it'll be fine," she replied chirpily whilst wrapping her knuckles on the door. "As long as Alex gets a baby sitter she doesn't care who it is, besides when you text asking to meet up I didn't want to miss the chance to talk to you."
"Yeah, I've been wanting to talk to you too…"
Harper's eyes widened and her heart fluttered, "really?" she asked hopeful.
"Yeah." Both of their eyes met each other, when Zeke looked at Harper it was as if every ounce of breath was taken from her lungs floating into the air like midnight smoke. Carefully, she took a step towards him without breaking any eye contact. Eventually Zeke responded by mimicking Harper's movements and approached her, but just as their bodies were close enough to touch the door in front of them was flung violently open allowing a screeching cry to erupt from the apartment. Harper and Zeke jumped in shock when the excruciating noise forced itself in to their ears, they turned to the door way only to be greeted by Alex scowling to herself.
"Thank god you're both here!" She exclaimed marching in to her apartment as she tried to repeirce her ears with a dangling diamond earing.
Harper stepped in to the apartment and spotted Neave red faced and sweaty, screaming in her play pen in the corner of the room. "Is she okay?"
"She's in time out," Alex told them coldly as she glared at her daughter before sitting down to put on her high heels.
"What did she do?" Zeke asked, "was it bad?"
"She bit Mason," Alex shook her head in disappointment, "I left them alone for five minutes while I finished getting ready and she bit him really hard on his arm." Alex rose from her seat and fixed her little champagne satin dress, she tugged on the bottom to reduce the chance of any creases being made before adjusting the top, which revealed a small part of her bust.
"Well if it helps, you look really pretty," Harper smiled.
Alex laughed at her friend's attempt at lightening the mood, "thanks Harper. But I'd feel better if I wasn't so stressed out!" She shouted over Neave's cries, "MASON!" She yelled causing Harper and Zeke to jolt in surprise.
"Coming!" He replied as he strolled out of their bedroom with a blue wet cloth draped over his arm, but he instantly threw it to the side rushed over to Neave in the play pen and scooped her up in his arms.
Harper and Zeke instantly noticed the cavernous wound on Mason's forearm, the red bite mark glowed next to the rolled up sleeve of his white shirt. The small droplets of blood that had escaped from the bite had smudged on to his arm, leaving dry red trails across his pasty skin.
"My poor baby," Mason cooed to as Neave sobbed in to his shoulder. He rubbed her back soothingly as she began to quieten down and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
"Um! Mason!" Alex called over to him, "what are you doing?" She asked marching over to him and wrapping the cloth back around his arm, "You still need a compress on that wound and she is still in time out!"
"She's been there for long enough now, besides she didn't know what she was doing."
"Mason, that does look really bad," Harper told him, cringing at the deepness of the wound as more liquid oozed out. "Maybe you should get it checked out?"
"Nah I'll be alright," he insisted continuing to comfort Neave who had now snuggled her face down in to the crick of his neck. "We've got some big plasters in the cupboard so I'll cover it with one of those."
Harper and Zeke simultaneously turned to Alex and in unison mouthed, "plasters?"
"Band aids," she stated rolling her eyes.
"Well how about you go and get your band aid while I have a cudgie with Neavie," suggested Harper to Mason, strolling over to him and prising Neave from his arms.
Mason gradually eased Neave out of his grip and passed her over to her aunt, she kicked and screamed violently whilst reaching out desperately for her Dad. Alex watched her daughter in sadness and felt a twinge of guilt when she watched Neave finally resist and curl up in Harper's embrace, whimpering softly to herself as she rubbed her tired eyes. She then glanced over to Mason who was also staring remorsefully at his daughter, looking down at her shimmering dress and glitzy shoes Alex pulled her diamond earing back out of her ear.
"Maybe we shouldn't go," she suggested, "I don't want to leave her while she's this upset."
"I was thinking the same," Mason timidly admitted stroking Neave's cheek softly whilst she lowered her head on to Harper's shoulder. "She's still not well and she hasn't been settling when its her bed time."
"She'll be fine!" Harper insisted pushing them both towards the front door, "now go! Have your date and spend some time together! You two never go out alone together anymore."
"Are you sure?" Mason asked.
"Yes! Now go and have a good time!"
Once Alex and Mason had been forced in to the hallway they spun around only to have the door immediately slammed in their faces. "Her new bedtimes at seven-thirty," Alex mumbled, "her pacifiers in her crib." Leaning her head back against the door Alex slid down and sat on the floor whining quietly, "will she be okay?" She asked Mason who placed himself on to the carpet next to her.
"Yeah, of course she will. She's with Harper, she'll be getting spoilt rotten and smothered in hugs and kisses. She'll love it."
"But she was really upset…"
"I know but as soon as Harper puts her in a bubble bath with her favourite toys she'll be having that much fun she won't even give us a second thought."
"I guess you're right, I just feel bad leaving her when she's upset."
"Me too, but Harper's right, we never go on dates anymore. We should make the most of it."
"What before the love and romance council make us break up?" Alex snarled, rolling her eyes.
"No, before we have to come back home and spend all our time looking afte Neave. And anyway remember what we said, we're not thinking about that tonight. Tonight's just about us, so stop worrying."
"You're right, sorry. I would have at least liked to have said bye to Neave though instead of being forced out of my own apartment!"
"Me too," Mason laughed. He held out his arm and pouted, "I didn't even get chance to put on my plaster."
Alex smirked and snapped her fingers, in an instant a white bandage appeared enveloped over the bloody bite mark Neave had made on to Mason's arm, "better?"
"Much better," he swiftly placed a kiss on to her cheek, "thanks love. Now come on," he stood up and offered Alex his hand, "I've got a surprise for you." Alex smiled and taking Mason's hand she stood up and they sauntered off together, their hands remaining interlocked with each other. "Hey," Mason began, "since when was Zeke helping Harper babysit?"
"Zeke was there? Huh, I didn't even notice…"
Mason's hands were clasped over Alex's eyes as he slowly guided her up the metal staircase. She tensed her body as her face was met by a cold waft of air, as a reaction she put her hands on top of his. "No!" He warned her playfully, "no peaking or you'll ruin the surprise."
"I hate surprises," Alex groaned.
"Well you'll love this one," Mason smiled as hey both reached the top of the platform.
"Are you sure? The last surprise I got was a positive pregnancy test and I wasn't too keen on that at first…"
"I'm sure." Mason removed his hands, Alex slowly blinked her eyes as they focused, there was a delicious moment where Alex's face washed blank with confusion, like her brain cogs couldn't turn fast enough to take in the information from her wide eyes. Every muscle of her body just froze before a grin crept onto her face, it soon stretched from one side to the other showing every single tooth.
She looked out at the city spread below her, and the world suddenly felt so wide and free that she wanted to jump. She sped towards the rail at the edge of the jumbotron and admired the lights that glittered everywhere. Just like stars dropping to the earth, huge and small buildings collided in a mixture of shadow and geometry, tiny vehicles rushed along tangled lines of streets creating twisting threads of light - they all intertwined together in a magnificent mess of dream. Alex then turned around and noticed the picnic blanket spread out on the floor along with a bucket of fried chicken, fries and a range of dips.
"Mason," Alex gasped, "this is adorable!" she wrapped her ans around his waist and pulled his body closer to hers, "my favourite place, with my favourite food and my favourite guy."
Mason chuckled, "I know I moan about you eating all of that rubbish but I figured once in a while isn't so bad."
Alex pressed her lips on to Mason's, "thank you, I love it!"
"See I told you that you would, now which are we having first the chicken or the chips?"
"How many times have I told you over here we call them fries! And obviously I'm having the chicken first, it's my favourite!"
Alex sat herself on the picnic blanket and began to gorge on the chicken, the small droplets of grease eased down her fingers and she quickly caught them with her mouth using her tongue to wipe away the mess. From the corner of her eye she spotted Mason snickering to himself as he watched her.
"What?" she mumbled, her mouth stuffed with fired chicken.
"Did I tell you that you look beautiful tonight?"
Alex rolled her eyes and scoffed to herself, "very funny Mason, make a sarcastic comment to the girl with a face full of fried chicken."
"No I'm serious!" He laughed, "I mean I think you always look beautiful but especially tonight."
Alex's cheeks flushed pink and she threw the chicken bone to the side whilst she slicked her wavy locks behind her ear. "Thanks, and I think you look extremely handsome."
"But do I always look handsome?"
"Yes," Alex laughed, "you always look handsome." Mason winked at Alex causing her to have another outburst of laughter, "is this your way of flirting?"
"Why is it working?"
"Maybe…"
"Good," Mason shot Alex a smile before grabbing himself some fries. "I'm glad my flirting still impresses you."
"I wouldn't go that far," she teased. Alex turned and looked back out at the city skyline facing them, the noises of the traffic buzzed in the background and she took in another breath of air as yet another draft of wind passed over her. "I love it here, how did we even first find this place? It's been so long I can't remember."
"You're family had taken over nearly every room at your parents and we needed some alone time so you flashed us out and we accidently ended up here."
"Yeah sounds about right, my family practically forcing me out of my home is usually how I found my cool hang outs."
"Well I'm glad they did, otherwise we might not have found this place." Mason wrapped his arm around Alex's shoulders and pulled her into his embrace.
They both sat in silence, looking over the city nothing else could be hear but the rumbles of the vehicles whizzing around the interwinding roads beneath them. "Can I ask something?" Alex began cautiously, "and I know we said we wouldn't talk about any of this stuff tonight so let me just ask this and then I'll shut up about it. But did you call Jillian about giving Neave my powers?"
Mason quickly took an inbreath and fidgeted in his seat, tensing his body against Alex's as he tried to release her from his grip. "Yeah, about that…"
"So you didn't then."
"I was going to but I was worried you'd have second thoughts, and I just got scared. I mean what if the Love and Romance Council don't let us stay together? What'll happen then?"
"Mason, remember what we said? We can't think about us, we're doing this for Neave! So, first thing tomorrow you're calling Jillian and we're going through with this! Okay?" Mason slowly nodded his head and stared in the vast space in front of him, he remained quiet and Alex watched him intently before softly caressing his face and turning it towards hers. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have freaked out like that. I guess I'm a little scared too, but it'll be okay. We'll be okay."
"I hope so love…"
Justin looked at his phone for the sixth time in four minutes. In his smart jeans and his crisply ironed shirt he blended into the scenery of the crowded restaurant, the warm lighting made the room seem more intimate and cosier than it was, considering it was buzzing with the room full of couples and rowdy groups celebrating all together. The noises packing the restaurant completely passed Justin, not bothering him at all he didn't even hear the rabbles coming from the group sat at the next table. All that he was concerned with was, where was Juliet?
Putting down his cell, Justin immediately checked the silver watch tightly fastened to his wrist and double checked that he had the correct time. It was never like Juliet to be late, even though she always stated she had all of the time in the world, with her being an immortal vampire, she made it her priority to remain punctual. Had she changed her mind?
Justin's heart dropped and a cold sweat crossed over his body. Is that why she wasn't here?
Sure, they had a tough breakup especially with it being unexpected and the circumstances of it, but she seemed so eager to meet up with him. It was of course her idea in the first place. Justin peered his head up and scanned the room, there was still no sign of her. Feeling defeated, Justin dropped his cell on the table and slumped back into his seat. Without any confirmation he had resided himself to the fact that she wasn't going to turn up, Justin then yanked himself out of the chair. There was no point staying if he was being stood up. With his head hung low in embarrassment he stepped away from the table, ready to leave the restaurant.
But a soft voice stopped him in his tracks, "off to the bathroom or something?" Justin spun around rapidly only to come face to face with Juliet. She pushed a piece of her blonde bobbed hair behind her ear and nervously straightened out her purple skater dress. "Or have you changed your mind?" She continued timidly, "sorry I didn't realise I was this late."
"No it's fine, I actually thought you'd changed your mind."
"I'd never do that…"
Juliet looked up at Justin and a small warm smile crept upon her face, her eyes locked with Justin's and in that moment, he became lost in his own head. Nothing around him seemed to exact in that moment it was just him alone… with her.
The bustling noises from the restaurant disappeared in an instant, Justin was completely zoned out and concentrated on Juliet, the same way she was focused on him. Her warm smile illuminated her rosy cheeks and ruby lips, Justin's stomach fluttered when her twinkling eyes scanned his body and her lip curled as a smirk crossed her face.
"You look good," she told him, causing Justin's cheeks to flush brightly making Juliet giggle to herself.
"You… You too. Here," he pulled out her seat and gestured for her to sit. Justin rushed around the other side of the table and threw himself in his seat eaglery. "I'm glad you decided to turn up," he began nervously, "I'm glad we got this chance to talk-"
"I need to stop you there," Juliet interrupted, "I need to say this, I've been preparing myself all day and if I don't say this now I'm worried I never will. Justin, I have lived long enough to know that what we share I can't replicate with any other guy. This love, this feeling, is just you and me. I have lived all over the world and I could do all of that again but I'd still have to come right back here if I wanted to find true love. I've never felt this safe with anyone else, we are the protectors of one another, and true friends. The trust I give you, that you give me, is what keeps us safe in this world, in this life. So whether this heart beats another day or another hundred years - it is yours."
"Wow… That was really deep."
"I know I messed up," she admitted in embarrassment, "I majorly messed up. But I've changed. I took some time for myself, travelled, spent time with my family, friends and yeah it's been hard losing Ana but I feel better, I feel myself again which I certainly didn't feel when we broke up. I wasn't myself, I made a stupid mistakes, kissing Mason and breaking up with you. But when you and Alex came to my parents restaurant that day all of those feelings came flooding back and I knew I needed you. I still love you Justin, so much and I don't want to spend another day without you."
"I don't want to spend another day without you either," said Justin reaching forward and softly taking Juliet's hands in his. "When you left my life was a mess, and I know in the lead up to our breakup I neglected you and I'm so sorry about that. I was struggling to manage both of WizTech and the Wizard Council and then the whole thing with the angels of darkness and Chancellor Tootie Tootie didn't help. But now I feel like my life is piecing back together, the school's doing well, Tootie Tootie's gone but I don't feel completely happy and that's because I don't have you. When Alex, Max and I went to the Late Nite Bite that day, we thought you and Mason were having an affair and as bad as it sounds the first thought that came in to my head wasn't 'how can Mason do this to Alex,' it was 'Juliet should be with me.'
"You have no idea how much I wanted to hear all of this Justin," Juliet sighed in relief squeezing Justin's hands, "but can you forgive me for what I did to you? I mean, it was unforgivable."
"Of course I can! You just buried your daughter that day, if that doesn't mess with someone's head I don't know what would. But can you forgive me?"
"For what?"
"For being a bad boyfriend, I didn't appreciate you like I should have and I'm sorry, I'm really sorry."
"Well, we can both make up for our mistake's now can't we?"
A beaming smile erupted on to Justin's face, Juliet moved her head closer to his. Justin sat frozen, from both fear and excitement. She leant in, so her forehead rested against his. They both closed their eyes, with both their breaths shaking. "Thank you," she said in barely more than a whisper.
"For what?" Justin replied, his voice low and husky.
"For being you." Her voice wavers, exhilarated from the tension between them.
Juliet tenderly leant in and kissed Justin's warms lips. They pull apart and take shaky, shallow breaths. Unable to contain themselves anymore, Justin held Juliet's head in his hands and pulled her into a fiery and passionate kiss. After several moments of on-lookers awkwardly watching their display of affection they both pulled away and dopily smiled at each other lovingly.
"I've missed you Snuggly-Boo-Boo-McCutie-kins," Justin cooed rubbing his nose against Juliets.
"I've missed you too Professor Snuggly-Boo-Boo-McCutie-kins!"
"Lets get some drinks to celebrate!" Justin suggested, "I just need to find a waiter…"
"Hey, before we get back to celebrating us, how's Neave doing? From what Mason was telling me it sounded like she was really sick."
"Yeah she was, it was tough seeing her in hospital, unresponsive and hooked up to all those machines but she's getting stronger. She's still not better but we have a plan to change her back so soon we'll have something else to celebrate!"
"Really? Justin that's amazing news! So, what's the plan?"
"Ana's adoptive parents are going to drain Neave's wolf powers and then Alex is going to transfer her powers to Neave. It sounds complicated but it's really a straight forward procedure."
"So Alex is giving up her powers?"
"Yeah, why?"
"Justin, she'll be a mortal. This means her and Mason can't be a couple anymore!"
"I know, they're appealing to the love and romance council but-"
"Justin, are you really willing to let your niece grow up with her parents separated?"
"Sweetie, millions of children have parents who aren't together! It doesn't put them at a disadvantage, the parents still love them just as much and they're still cared for and loved and-"
"That's not what I'm saying! What I mean is, do you really want Alex to bring Neave up on her own?"
"But she won't be, Mason will still be there?"
"And what happens when he meets someone else, or what will happen to Mason when Alex meets someone? Or what will happen when the Love and Romance Council don't let them stay together and they're both so heartbroken they lose focus of Neave?"
"I'm sure that won't happen…"
"Remember what you said about how you felt when we broke up? Imagine feeling like that and trying to care for a child… alone!"
Justin hung his head low and muttered, "I didn't think about it like that."
"Justin there has to be something else you can do to help, I mean you practically run the wizard world isn't there some sort of loop hole?"
"Believe me if there is, I can't find it, we've looked through everything."
Juliet sighed and tenderly stroked Justin's arm, "this is so sad. If only Alex could keep half of her powers, then she could stay with Mason and change Neave back."
Slowly Justin's eyes enlarged and a huge grin crossed his face, "Juliet, you're a genius!"
