Missy hated Sundays, partly because it meant the end of the weekend, but mostly because her parents insisted on attending church and pretending that everything was perfectly normal.
Normal, hah!
Three years after being woken up in the middle of the night by her parents screaming at each other, stumbling into the living room right as both of them shouted that they wanted a divorce, their little girl collapsing and getting powers should've brought them together.
Ironic that her powers didn't work well when people were around.
Come to think of it, a lot of people's powers seemed to be playing some sick little joke. Dennis and his father, Chris and his math issues. Dean always being his namesake even when Vicky treated him like dirt...
Sighing as she finished switching out her Sunday Best for her Super Best, she hoped one of the Protectorate had taken Sophia on patrol with them. Her being confined to base and console duty had only increased her bitchiness, but her obsession with Saurial and Raptaur was getting... weird. Like when she'd insist on watching the Discovery Channel during Shark Week.
Much to her relief, her newest teammate was at the console, idly looking over the protocol handbook.
"Dinah! They finally got you running the board?"
"Yeah. I told the guys down in the Think Tank I was getting bored out of my mind between giving the numbers for the day and staying cooped up in the dorms 'for my protection'. It's not like I'm going to be going on patrols much, so I told them I should at least start learning to be C&C for the team."
"And our resident recalcitrant roommate?"
"Someone's been reading a word-a-day calendar. Miss Militia took Stalker on patrol. I think she noticed how stir crazy Sophia was getting, and that wasn't going to end well for anybody anytime soon. What is her deal anyway?"
"Carlos told us about it. First of the year Sophia stuffed a girl into a locker full of shit. Bad enough that it might be considered attempted murder. I'm amazed Sophia didn't get thrown in juvie. I guess Piggot's just waiting long enough to ship her off to Alaska or something so nobody will notice." she said soberly. "They'll probably announce you as her replacement. Have they finalized your codename yet?"
"That PR guy, Glenn whatever, keeps pushing 'Oracle' and putting me in some kind of Greek toga thing for a costume. No way. I'm thinking... 'Assessor' or maybe 'Bookie'. I've even got the hat for it!" With that, Dinah pulled out a dark blue fedora and jauntily put it on her head.
Missy started giggling. "Oh God, you with a costume like you were a member of 'The Untouchables'. That's hilarious. Clock would be calling you 'Fedorable' on the spot."
Dinah began laughing as well. "There's a 98% chance I'll make you an offer you can't refuse." she managed to gasp out.
Missy wiped her eyes, then spoke in a raspy, conspiratorial tone. "But it's obvious you're not a member of 'The Family' or are you wearing a mask to hide your secret scaly heritage?"
Dinah took a few moments to catch her breath. "Oh no, but I'm pretty sure Uncle Roy doesn't mind working with them. You saw the thing in today's paper?" handing over the article.
Missy read over it quickly, "Oh, wow. Piggy's gonna flip. Saurial and Raptaur have something to do with this?"
Dinah nodded. "Something Big I'd say." she said with a grin.
