Bring your pet to school day

(By ShadowVulpix)

Colin was starting to get a feeling of dread about coming to this place. On one hand, the BBFO was a good place for Tinkering, and both Raptaur and Saurial had a very similar outlook on mechanics, while Metis' insight was extremely efficient at finding potential problems in designs before they were tested.

On the other hand, pretty much every time he'd been here recently, something weird had happened.

Dragon knocked on the door to the office while he contemplated, momentarily, whether or not the loss of sanity was worth such good Tinkering partners.

"Hello, you two." Raptaur grinned. "No Legend today?"

"He's busy in New York at the moment." Dragon explained, walking inside. "He says hello, by the way."

"I hope it's nothing to serious he has to deal with." Metis put in from the table, looking up from one of the sketches scattered there. Dragon emoted a smile.

"I don't think so. Just normal work." Both Tinkers made their way to the table, examining the drawings, while Raptaur locked the door.

"Saurial's at home right now." The large lizard-woman told them. "She wanted to talk to our parents about something. I'm not sure what or why. She should be back soon, though, I doubt it'll take too long for her to do whatever she needs to do down there." Colin and Dragon traded glances as Raptaur sat down. "So for now, we've got a bunch of things we can look over, and Saurial can add her own opinions whenever she gets here." Taking the mug of coffee offered by Ianthe on her way past, Colin settled back to look over some of the drawings.

At least this time seems to be fairly normal…

An hour and a half after the two had arrived, the main door swung open again, accompanied by a cheerful, hissed greeting that cut off mid way through. "Oh, sorry. I didn't realise that you were here as well. Didn't mean to be rude."

"That's perfectly alright, Saurial." Colin replied, still pouring over the sketch. "Though I am uncertain how you missed my bike."

"I was… distracted." Suddenly concerned, Colin turned around to look at her, only to pause at the sight of a fairly large box by her side, a handle folding down on top of it.

"What've you got there, Saurial?" Ianthe asked, sounding curious.

"Oh, this is what I was talking to mom and dad about." She sounded pleased with herself, grinning widely, and Colin gave the box a worried once over.

Was that hissing?!

"You didn't." Raptaur accused, sounding extremely amused and impressed.

"I did." Her sister smiled even wider, then leaned down to open a catch on the front of the box, swinging the door open.

A three foot long wyvern clambered out of it, looking around curiously and sniffing the air. Saurial scratched the top of its head, closing the carrier case it had been in, before lifting it up and carrying it over.

"How did you manage this?" Raptaur asked.

"Dad reckoned I could handle the responsibility." Saurial replied. "Mom took a bit more persuading, but Big Brother helped out a little. He argued that the rest of you could help, and Kaiju could make sure he's ok." The wyvern was now placed on a clear spot on the table, sniffing around wildly. "So we now have a pet."

"Nice." Metis said, offering her hand to the wyvern. "And very nice job getting it past Aunt and Uncle. That's a task in and of itself, even with my sort of ability."

"Have you named him yet?" Ianthe asked, also offering her hand. The little grey pet- something Colin was struggling to wrap his head around- nibbled at her claws, making the purple reptile giggle. Little fins on the side of his head, which had gone unnoticed until then, lifted up, the overall effect looking remarkably like a dog raising its ears.

"His name's-" Here Saurial broke off into a string of hisses that made the hair on the back of his neck stand on end, "And that's what he'll answer to."

"Amusing name." Raptaur commented.

"I thought so." She chuckled. "Mom tried to use it as an argument that I wouldn't be responsible enough to have a pet, but he'd already taken to me so she got overruled."

"Does he have an English name?" Dragon asked nervously, looking at the wyvern.

"I… didn't think to come up with one." Saurial admitted, sheepish. "The wyverns don't answer to anything other than our language, and I don't think it's possible for them to learn to understand English or any other human language, so I didn't think I'd need one yet. I didn't really expect the two of you to be here." She paused. "Huh. No Legend?"

"He's busy, they said." Metis told her.

"Ah. Makes sense." She smiled. "You can say hi to him if you want, guys. He won't bite." A beat. "I don't think. He shouldn't, anyway."

"Oh, god…" Colin said quietly, while Dragon reached over to him.

"Hello, there…" She murmured, giving him her hand. The wyvern sniffled about for a moment, then made a confused hissing sound.

"Heh. He probably doesn't understand why you smell weird compared to us." Ianthe told her. "Since he'll have grown up around our kind, and his own."

"That makes sense." Dragon nodded, gently stroking his head. After a moment, Colin sighed internally, offering his hand to the wyvern as well.

Why is it always when we're visiting…

Another hour later, after spending a good twenty minutes talking about the wyvern- well, Dragon had asked questions about the wyvern, which the Family members at the table had spent time answering as best as they could- the two Tinkers were finally leaving. Saurial was still playing about with the wyvern, taking things out of the carrier case and putting them into a corner of the room that had just been set up for him, while Raptaur showed them out.

"Sorry about the little distraction in the middle." She apologised. "I didn't expect Saurial to have been pulling off this, of all things."

"That's alright, Raptaur." Colin sighed. "It was somewhat annoying, but manageable, and no fault of yours." She grinned.

"Thanks, Armsmaster. Bye, Dragon. See you both soon, I suppose?" Dragon nodded, and the reptilian woman shut the door as the two headed over to Colin's bike.

"Why does this stuff always happen when we're around?" He complained to her. Dragon chuckled.

"I think there's probably just as much strange stuff happening when we aren't around too, Armsmaster." She emoted a smile. "It's just that we end up catching a lot of it because we're here so often."

"Perhaps." He started his bike and began driving out of the compound, his friend starting her jets and flying towards the Rig.

"So how long do you think it'll take before there's a thread on PHO about Saurial walking her new pet?" Dragon asked.

Colin groaned.

'Raptaur' turned away from the door as Armsmaster's bike drove off.

"Really Taylor?" Amy asked. "Really?"

"You knew it was going to happen the second I asked for him." She accused, shifting back to her base form. The wyvern made a surprised sound, and she quickly offered him her hand, letting him smell that she was still the same person, mostly.

"I didn't expect it to be now, though!" Amy argued, then sighed. "I should have."

"You should." Lisa agreed. "I should have as well." 'Saurial' came over to the table from the corner and lifted the wyvern onto her lap, stroking down his back, while they all watched.

"You did very good work on him, Amy." Varga told her. "You should be proud of him."

"I am." She admitted. "Very much so. I'll be honest, I was a little worried about making him, especially given how Ianthe and Metis seem to be evolving, but comparatively he's got so much less brain power to work with that I'm fairly confident that he won't end up accidentally becoming much smarter than a very smart dog."

"Didn't you say that about these two as well, though?" Lisa pointed out, tapping her chest.

"Hush. I'm sure of it this time." Amy paused. "Mostly. Ninety-nine percent sure. Ninety-eight." She paused again. "Ninety-five at a push."

"So fairly sure." The Varga chuckled.

"Shut up, you." 'Ianthe' scowled. Taylor perked up.

"Oh! Could you make one for me?"

"You already have him." Lisa gestured. "Who we really need to think of a name for in English. Why do you want another?"

"Special order to protect a friend of the Family." She grinned. "Let's have him be Saurial's, or the BBFO's, whichever…"

"And then have Taylor have one as well." The Varga completed. "That could be fun."

"You just want me to make another wyvern, don't you." Amy accused.

"I mean, yeah." Taylor nodded. "Still, could you?" Amy glared at her friend for several moments, then stood.

"Come on." She sighed, walking towards the work room. "Let's make another wyvern."

"After we do, want to join me in doing something?" Taylor asked, following the biokinetic in her base form, the Saurial-shaped Varga sitting and playing with the wyvern at the table.

"What sort of something?" Lisa asked, tagging along.

Taylor explained.

Lisa started laughing, with Amy close behind.

From the table, Varga smirked, while the wyvern cocked his head towards the voices in confusion.

So.

At this point, I'm beginning to wonder how the Family keep surprising us.

For anyone not in Brockton Bay right now- specifically, on the Boardwalk- you'll have missed this.

Yeah. That's right.

Saurial, Raptaur, Metis and Ianthe, all on the Boardwalk. And yes. That does in fact appear to be a wyvern.

From what I've heard so far, it really is a wyvern.

Does anyone know any more?

Update: A bit more information, courtesy of FCVanillaIce, apparently the wyvern isn't some very different Family member.

He's a pet.

Update 2: From Ianthe herself, we've heard a little more. Apparently Saurial spent most of today arguing with her parents about getting a pet, and this was the result.

I'm not going to summarise the rest of the post, so just jump to here for the information we've been given by her.

Update 3: More sightings added.

Update 4: A few more pics from over the weekend, and some video.

Update 5: Ianthe returns, with an update!

So, the Family has wyverns now? Where'd all the dragons go?

Or have we just not met them yet?

►Glare
Replied On Apr 1st 2011:

Given how the diverse the Family seems to be, I really doubt that there aren't any dragons in there. Wyverns is a cool enough step in between, though, so I'll take it.

From what I heard out on the Boardwalk, the wyvern isn't actually a Family member, or at least not in the traditional sense we've been thinking of. Here's a link to the recording I have of the conversation, though it's a bit far back in the crowd.

From what I can understand of it, the little wyvern's a pet, belonging to Saurial, though the others in the Family are apparently helping to look after him as well.

He only comprehends the Family language, hence Saurial's hissing at him, and he doesn't have any English name because he wouldn't respond to it.

FCVanillaIce that's interesting. Thanks for the video, it's now linked in the main post.

So, the Family pets look like wyverns? Or perhaps they're the Family equivalent of dogs, and they have other animals that are like cats and hamsters?

That could be really cool. I want a wyvern dog now!

I wonder if they'll be out more often, and if I can find them?

Jormungandr, please, for god's sake, shut up.

Now, in regards to the wyvern, I wonder if his name could be translated? I mean, no-one's ever gotten far into working out anything these guys are saying in that language, after all, so I don't know if it's even possible.

Otherwise, I suggest Cloud as a name. He's all grey, like a rainy sky.

►Laser Augment

Wouldn't that be Storm, then? Given that it's rainy clouds.

Hmm, perhaps you're right. Storm sounds pretty cool as well.

Then again, he's the wrong sort of grey for that, I think. Too light.

Knowing the Family, he'd probably end up with some really contrary name if we let them give him one. Maybe Neon?

Though I'm voting for Cinder, myself.

Alright, in order to bring an end to the speculation- and probably open up a whole new line of it- I'm here to answer some questions.

First, yes, the wyvern is a pet. It is more similar to a dog than a cat. We do have other sorts of pets, however I'm not really at liberty to say anything more about them.

The little guy belongs to Saurial, and she's told us that she had to spend quite a bit of time arguing in order to get permission to have him. Apparently our Aunt- her mother- was pretty against it, since she thought Saurial was too immature for the responsibility.

She's not entirely wrong, of course! :D

Anyway, about our language.

It could probably be translated, but it's difficult. We have a lot of concepts that wouldn't shift over right, and that's assuming humans could even hear everything.

Theoretically, we could probably translate some of it for you, but it'd be very difficult. It might take a while, a number of years at least.

IguanaGirl, I'm sure you'll be seeing him pretty often in the future. Saurial has to take him for walks around the place, after all.

Ianthe, great! I'll have to see if I can meet you guys again. He looks really cool.

►Laser Augment
Replied On Apr 1st 2011:

As cool as he looks, he seemed a little upset at the crowding. Is he shy?

►Ianthe (Verified Cape) (The Family)
Replied On Apr 1st 2011:

Well, he's spent his whole life up until this point at our home, so I'd be more surprised if he wasn't a little shy around humans!

It'll probably be quite a while before he's completely alright around here- so many new scents, sights and sounds to get used to, and it's a bit overwhelming at first, I assure you! But give him a few weeks and he should be completely fine, if a bit protective of cousin Saurial. It's how wyverns are, after all.

►Dingbat779 (Cape Groupie)
Replied On Apr 1st 2011:

Thanks, Ianthe. That tells us a lot. Gives us all a lot of questions, of course, but that's about normal with the Family.

Concerning your comments about your language, though; do you think it would be possible to get an approximate translation of the wyvern's name put onto here? We can't really keep calling him 'the wyvern' so maybe we could use the approximation for a name instead?

►Ianthe (Verified Cape) (The Family)
Replied On Apr 1st 2011:

Dingbat779, that's a good idea, I suppose. I'll have to work on getting the name translated, and that will almost definitely take some time, but I can probably work on it.

Wow, that's a lot of debate over a possible name.

Anyway, never fear, because we've cracked it! Sort of. It's... about as close as we've been able to get over the last few days, and I enlisted a lot of help from people to do it.

So, as best as we can figure out, we've translated our wyvern's name to mean 'He who sparkles brightly in dimming ashes.' It's not quite perfect, we don't think, but it gets the concept across well enough to be understood, unlike a few of our earlier versions.

And that name is... interesting, to say the least. It sounds very cool, I have to say that. I wonder what the rest of your names mean now, though.

In regards to the wyvern, I suggest we call him Ash. It's a part of his name, and the colour suits the name pretty well, which is good.

Taylor quickly smoothed out her face before leaving the house.

"You're really doing this?" Danny asked.

"Of course I am, dad." She grinned, as Saurial manifested next to her. "I promise I'll send him along to the DWU when we get there, and Lisa's promised she'll be waiting outside to take them into BBFO for us."

"I'll be sure to keep an eye on PHO, then." He sighed, sounding a little strained. Taylor chuckled, taking a lead from a grinning Saurial-form Varga, and hugged her father goodbye before the four of them set out for Arcadia a few miles away.

"We're already under cloak, so we can head over the rooftops, but we'll have to make sure we drop down near the school." The Varga told her as they lifted their two wyverns into their arms.

'I'd love for us both to ride in on Raptaur, but that defeats the purpose of this.' She commented, changing to Saurial as well as the two began jogging. 'Then again, so does the cloak.'

"We'll drop it soon enough, Brain, and let the people of the internet enjoy the sight." Both of them laughed, and the two wyverns traded confused looks before relaxing.

Impatiently, Amy checked her phone again.

"What's up, Amy?" Mandy asked.

"Just wondering where Taylor is, that's all." She said honestly. "She's normally here before us, or at least before me and Vicky, so I was wondering how come she isn't here."

"That is a little odd." Eric thought aloud. "I doubt anything's happened to her, though. She's got Saurial with her, hasn't she?"

"She should do, yeah." Amy nodded, checking her phone again. "Still, there are a lot of idiots in this city, even now."

"True, but I doubt any of them are stupid enough to try picking a fight with someone while Saurial's right there." Mandy pointed out.

"I guess." Amy conceded.

"Hey, what's going on over there?" Rich asked, looking towards the gate. Glancing over, she noticed that there was a small crowd of gaping students hovering around the gates. Discreetly, Amy sniffed, the wind picking up Taylor's scent and blowing it towards her. She smiled slightly.

"Dunno." She shrugged. "Let's go find out?" The others nodded in agreement, and the group of five headed over to the gates, trying to peer over everyone's heads to see what had caught their attention.

"Excuse me, please?" Saurial's familiar voice called over. "Could you move out of the way? Taylor's got to get into the school too, you know." The crowd immediately parted, giving them a perfect view of the group.

"Oh, wow." Lucy whispered, awed.

"Thanks." Saurial smiled, pulling on the grey wyvern's lead. She muttered something in the Family language that Amy didn't catch, making the wyvern bow its head like a scolded dog, the fins on the sides of its head drooping as it moved away from the crowd and back to her side. Taylor's wyvern, dark blue with white patches, was pressed against her legs, looking up at all of the students worriedly.

"Hi guys." Taylor waved with her free hand, the lead wrapped around her wrist, as she made her way over.

"What on Earth is going on, Taylor?" Mandy gaped. "And what's up with the dragons?"

"Wyverns." She corrected.

"What?"

"Wyverns, not dragons. Wyverns have claws on their wings which they use to walk on all fours, while dragons don't." Taylor explained.

"Right. Wyverns, whatever." Mandy shrugged. "Now what gives?"

"It's a gift to Taylor." Saurial told her, walking over with her own wyvern. "I have my little guy here, Ash, and I've had him since last week-"

"I saw that on PHO." Eric put in. "I think everyone did, in fact."

"True." Saurial grinned. "Anyway, I went back home and persuaded my mom, plus Ianthe's mom, to help me out and get Taylor her own wyvern as a bodyguard."

"Isn't that your job?" Amy teased.

"Well, I might not always be around, so it's best to make sure Taylor here has a companion even then." Saurial argued. "Anyway, while it took a lot of work, most of which I'm not privy to and neither are you guys, but this little guy here understands English well enough for Taylor to give him commands."

"Really?" Lucy looked extremely enthusiastic at the idea, and Taylor nodded.

"Dusk, sit." She told him. The wyvern looked at her, then carefully sat down, still looking around nervously.

"Dusk?"

"From what Saurial translated, his name in the Family language is roughly 'Stars who rise on dark early nights' so I decided to call him Dusk." Taylor shrugged.

"Huh." Rich nodded.

"Sorry Lucy, I don't think I'd be able to swing you one." Saurial apologised, pre-empting what she was about to say. "I might, barely, be able to get one for Amy, if I played it right and brought both Metis and Ianthe in on it, maybe Raptaur as well, but I really doubt I'd be able to get any more."

"I don't think Carol would appreciate me getting a three foot wyvern as a pet." Amy observed drily. "At least, not without asking first." Saurial laughed.

"Probably not, no." She looked down at her phone, then sighed. "We need to get moving soon, I think." Reaching down, she unclipped Ash's lead, gesturing for him to sit at the same time. Gently, she hissed at him, {Hey, we need to go inside this building now. Can you head back to the Docks and stay with Metis for the day? We'll see you later, alright?} For a moment, the wyvern looked uncomprehending, then nodded slightly. Meanwhile, Taylor was doing the same next to her, gently stroking Dusk's head while he calmed down.

"You go with Ash to stay with Metis, ok? I'll see you later." Dusk made a little hiss, leaning into her hand, before both Saurial and Taylor stepped back. "Go to Dad, Dusk. Go on."

{Go with Dusk and find Metis, Ash.} Both wyverns stood up, stretching out their wings, and jumped into the air, causing the entire crowd to back up, some of them still holding phones to record everything. They hovered nervously over their owners for a moment, then started off towards the DWU compound.

"Wow." Mandy muttered, the rest of the group nodding. Inside Arcadia, the bell rang for homeroom, and slowly the students began making their way towards them, a number typing rapidly on their phones as well.

"Hey, Saurial?" Lucy asked on the way in. "What does your name mean?"

"What do you mean by that, Lucy?" The reptilian woman asked in return, even as Amy paused.

"I mean, I know you use Saurial as an English name," the Chinese girl explained, "But what about your actual name? Like how Ash and Dusk have really long title-like names when you translated them." Saurial stopped for a moment, and Amy spotted the tiny change in body language as the Varga contemplated a response, before she nodded.

"It's… a little difficult, translating from our language to yours." She started. "Moreso than two different human languages are. We have some concepts that you don't have words for, and it's impossible to really translate it properly; some sounds don't transmit this high up. You know, like Ianthe said." While multiple people did double takes at that, the main group, including Taylor's base form, were listening intently. "I think the best I could translate my name to would be…" She stopped for a moment, hissing quietly, then looked at the sky. "Perhaps 'She who lies in the fate of other worlds' is closest."

"That seems… awfully prophetic, in some way." Amy commented, her gaze drifting between the two forms of her friends. Saurial shrugged.

"If I had to guess, I'd think quite a lot of us have names like that. I haven't really looked into it, and I'm not sure how accurate my translation of my name is, but I suppose that's just how it worked out."

"I think it's a very pretty name." Taylor put in.

"So do I, I just thought it was a bit odd." Amy hastened, seeing the glimmer in their eyes. Another bell went off, making students curse and begin running towards the school, some still typing rapidly, and she gave them both a look.

All three of them flashed grins of momentary amusement.

I wonder what PHO will make of that

Well this is a thing.

As you might know, I go to Arcadia. Saurial's been around a lot, and this morning she brought Ash, her wyvern pup.

Along with that, she came in with Taylor Hebert, as she does, and another wyvern.

Yup.

This one's apparently called 'Stars who rise on dark early nights', though Taylor just calls him Dusk.

Yeah, he apparently belongs to her. Saurial said she pulled a lot of strings that she can't talk about to get one that understands English for her to act as a guard, once he's got his bearings here.

Anyway, they sent both of them along to the DWU before they went into school, which looked pretty cool, but then one of the girl's in Taylor's group asked about Saurial's name, since we'd gotten translations for both of the wyverns.

It seemed kind of like she was expecting the question, since she just repeated what Ianthe told us all before about translating their names across before telling us.

'She who lies in the fate of other worlds.'

That's what her name translates as.

Amy Dallon was there, and she said it sounded pretty prophetic. I have to agree.

You really just won't shut up, will you Jormungandr?
