Chapter 53
Kharkov has left the room. Maya gazed upon the ceiling with crickets filling her eardrums. There was still something in her that wanted to work. Wanting to reread the sources that were given and get to know about Alesia's background. Though her notes were said to be wrong, she did not want to give up. She must know about Alesia.
Why was everyone so secretive about Alesia? Maya turned her body and laid on her side. Why is it that everyone can't talk about her? Why must the Host hide it from me?
All of this made her more restless. She could not lay still. She turned left and right, wanting to get up and walked back to The Academia and study at her section of the Academia. But her thoughts were cancelled as she remembered Kharkov's advice to sleep. She should not over commit to a point her training to be disrupted.
Fuck, I can't sleep like this. She sat up and looked at her notes that were organised on top of the table. But the Naraane training going to take a whole lot of effort.
She landed her head on the pillow with a noticeable thump. Groaned loudly then sighed until there was no air in her lungs. No meditation could tone down her desire to know more. Her eyelids were still light and they would not close anytime soon.
Alright Maya, remember the good thoughts. Eyes closed and lungs full of air. Remember the good thoughts.
She took the pillow and hugged it tightly; covering her mouth till her nostril barely touched it. The first thought appeared to be the man whom she loved. Axton.
Perhaps it was hypocritical of her to dislike people talking about her liking towards the man. Then again, she was a woman who liked to keep things to herself. Kharkov was correct, Axton was her new motivation that propelled her forward. More than she thought she could achieve. The thing that she looked forward to in the distant future with hopes and happiness. She sometimes disliked the fact that she would think of him. It was cheesy and Maya admitted.
Though the smile covered by the pillow could not be denied. It was true that amidst the confusion, the thought of Axton made it easier for her. Knowing that in the end, there was someone that she could end up with. A clear endpoint to her tumultuous journey.
The temperature was chilly. The night was dark and cosy. Her thoughts calmed her tense muscles and mind. Not long, The Blue Siren entered deep slumber.
"Achoo." Axton shook his head and wiped his nose. "Dang…"
New Overlook was the new Resistance base. The strategic room had the same layout as Sanctuary in the past. A map at the centre of the room. Monitors at the ceiling with various information in connection with the army. Desk and chairs with their own separate computers at the surrounding wall. The only differences were the upgrade of hardware and overall bigger space. It was night, Axton and Gaige were the only ones in the room as the other Vault Hunters had their own adventures or were asleep. Officers were also not present since they too have their own schedule.
Gaige, who was sitting on a couch, turned to Axton who stood at the map console.
"You having a fever, Axton?" Gaige leaned forward to see clearly.
"Don't think so… rrrhhh!" He shook his head and sucked his nose. "Dusty place I guess. I think we should hire some janitors around here."
"Seriously, are we that legit?" Gaige leaned on the couch again.
"Do we really need to be legit to keep this place clean?" Axton raised his brow and turned towards her. "Or maybe I'm about to have a fever."
"Ohh gross… you might want to check with Hammerlock. Stalker Fever is baadddd."
"I don't go out as much as you guys. Pretty sure that's not the case." Axton looked at the floor and saw pizza crumbs. "Did you eat here? Cuz there's been a lot of it recently."
"That." Gaige raised one finger. "Would be Sal. He's been hanging out around these places a lot."
"Yeah, a janitor is not going to be a big hit on the army's budget." Axton put his hands on his waist.
"Hey Hombres." Salvador suddenly arrived in the room with boxes of pizza on both hands. Stacked on top of each other. "Let's eat pizza!"
Both Axton and Gaige looked at Kharlov with surprised faces. Then they looked at each other, speechless.
In her slumber, Maya would unconsciously turn her body left and right. Sometimes facing the window then facing the door. She scratched her neck and blinked a few times. Seeing her room rather blurry. But on the last blink.
There was a woman standing in front of her bed. Staring directly at her.
Maya quickly woke up, sat up, panicked and crawled back until her back hit the window of the frame. Even further and she would fall down to the ground, four storey high. She did not scream but breathed erratically. She looked at the woman and the woman returned the look back.
It was a ghost. Maya could not mistake it as it was near. There was no physical body, she could see her door rather faintly.
The ghost said nothing. She continued to stare at Maya.
"Who… are you….?" Maya shivered.
The ghost remained silent. The ghost eyes had an iris but no pupil. Her skin was pale, wearing a see through gown with it's nipples visible and shapely curves. Maya could also see that the ghost had Siren channels, similar to the Host.
A Siren from Terra Hewina?
The feature that Maya saw the most prominent was the blue hair. Maya touched her hair then looked at the ghost again. Her heart was beating faster than ever. The ghost had the same blue hair just like hers.
"Mother?" Maya said. "Is that you?"
The ghost reacted with her face slightly moved. Maya wanted to approach closer but the ghost glided through her like wind; to the window and left the room. Maya did not cast away her sights even for a moment and saw the ghost Siren landed on the ground and glided in a certain direction.
"Mama! Wait!" Her voice was strained.
She jumped from her bed and went through the window. With her Siren power, she made herself light thus the landing did not damage her. She landed on her feet and crouched down a bit. She turned to see the ghost garnering distance. The Blue Siren immediately sprinted to catch up with the ghost.
She followed her mother into the woods. No matter how hard she tried to sprint, the ghost always maintained the same distance.
"Mama! Where are you going!"
The ghost passed through every tree and leaves. While Maya had to push away the big leaves and move around or jump over tree trunks.
"Mama, wait for me!" She pushed herself and sprinted even quicker.
After a few minutes of sprinting, the Siren ghost finally stopped and so did Maya. She stopped right in front of the ghost and slid a few inches closer because of the momentum. Maya realised that the Siren ghost stood right in front of the cave. The only entrance and exit to Tretho.
Like before, the ghost did not move and continued to stare at Maya. Her gown waved as the wind blew. Maya panting, heaving back and forth to get some air.
"Are you going to leave me again!" Maya shouted at her. "Mama, it's me Maya."
The ghost reacted again with the face slightly moving.
"So you are my mother…" A thousand emotions entered Maya. "Mama…"
The ghost Channels started to glow.
Avenge me… my daughter…
Maya heard her mother's voice but through her Nonua. Maya frowned. "What?"
The ghost opened her mouth wide. AVENGE ME MAYA!
The voice shook Maya, her eyes turned up and she passed out.
Falling down to the ground, no longer conscious. Her body shook like she was having a seizure.
