Chapter 37: a wicked threat
Shoppers row was finally accessible again. No one was quite sure what had caused the damage to begin with, but over the last few weeks the shopping district had been repaired enough to allow public access once again. Only some of the smaller areas were still blocked off.
As a result, the Adams family decided to spend the day shopping. At the moment they were walking down the street,(Damona and Jibanyan following close behind.) the family walked passed to small donut shops, giving the family matriarch an idea.
"Hey gang, how bout before we head home we get some Spirit donuts?" he asked.
"Sure!" Nate said in reply.
"Yeah, I'm starving," Damona complained, though she knew the human couldn't hear her.
Oddly enough, Nate's mother seemed to have a negative reaction to the idea, "Spirit donuts? Oh, no, we are a Soul donut family."
"Honey, I love you, but we are not doing this again," her husband said, "I keep trying to tell you, Spirit donut's are way better."
"Spirit never gets the frosting ratio right, you know I need my frosting kick!" Lily yelled.
"Soul donut's are always stale! I swear those things are left out all night!" Aaron argued. The two continued to bicker over the pros and cons of each donut shop.
"Are they seriously arguing over donyuts?" Jibanyan asked.
"Yeah… they kinda do that," Nate said, "personally I can't tell the difference, both shops taste the same."
"I can not believe you!" Lily yelled, before turning to her son, "Nate, sweetheart, why don't you walk home, I need to talk with your father."
"Yeah, let's do that," Damona agreed, floating off. Nate nodded to his mother, before subtly picking up jibanyan and walking after his undead fiance. The half demon sighed, "please tell me we aren't going to be like that when we're older."
"Who knows," Nate shrugged.
"Because seriously, donuts?!" the demonic princess continued, as she did Jibanyan began to smell something odd, "that is the dumbest reason to argue I can think of!"
"Um, guys?" Jibanyan said looking around.
"Hey, I agree with you, it's just plain weird!" Nate agreed with his fiance.
The nekomata turned in the direction of the smell, then his jaw dropped, "guys!"
"Like, do married couples just want to argue about everything?" Damona asked.
"GUYS!" Jibanyan yelled, finally getting their attention.
"WHAT!?" the two said unanimously.
"LOOK!" the cat yokai pointed. When Nate turned, he didn't see anything, however given Damona's reaction, he figured a yokai was about.
With a brief shine of his watch's light, the yokai became visible. The human boy took a step back at the sheer size of the yokai. It was a blue nekomata that seemed to be twice the size of Gargaros! It lacked the species signature tails, and was covered in red and blue mushrooms. The most notable trait of this yokai was how it was lazily drifting in the breeze like a balloon.
The cat's lazy yellow eyes focused on Nate's wrist, it yawned before saying, "the model zero…?"
The yokai's gaze came upward, fixing on Nate himself.
"It's amazing!" He said in shock, "you look just like him! I'll call you bold basher!"
The yokai tried to come closer, stumbling onto the top of a building, causing him to bounce up and float down to the road, landing on someone's bike. Upon landing, the yokai sneezed a cloud of pink smoke, when this smoke hit nearby objects, they quickly began to grow in size!
"Um… who is this guy?" Nate asked as the giant cat tried to sit up.
"I'm looking, give me a second," his demon fiance answered, taking out her yokaI-pad.
"Bold basher! I nyeed to talk to you!" the oversized nekomata said getting up on all fours, "I have something very important to tell you!"
"Which is?" Nate questioned as the can walked forward, looking very tired doing so.
"I nyeed your help, the whole world does!" the nekomata answered, Nate seemed skeptical. The cat yokai brought a paw to his wrist, "you've got the model zero, it's the only thing that can stop them!"
"Model zero? You mean the watch?" the human had more questions than answers, "Wait, stop who?"
"The Wic-" before the yokai could finish, he was shot at by a golden strike of lightning, blowing him back.
"WHAT THE WHAT?!" Nate yelled in shock.
"Y-you have… to stop.." the giant cat yelled in pain, "STOP THE WICKED!"
As he forced out the final word, a silver strike of lightning hit him, destroying his form. The trio turned to see the attackers, Damona and Jibanyan's faces became faces of fear, while Nate was just confused.
All he could see was two floating old ladies, however Jibanyan screamed, "THEY'RE EVERYWHERE!"
"I-Impossible! There can't be this many!" Damona's voice showed legitimate fear.
As Nate looked closer at the flying old ladys, he noticed that something else was there. He could see the outlines of a few, no, several, no, they were all around him! Using his watch, he shined a light at the sky, revealing what had to be hundreds of black, shadowy yokai with beating red eyes. He joined his companions in their fear.
"What the…" Nate could barely process the size of this army, there were so many they practically blocked out the sun!
The two elderly yokai pointed at the trio and yelled, "ATTACK!"
The swarm of black yokai began to rush towards them, the human and demons realised what they were in for, and made a run for it. They bolted down the street, the army chasing after.
Damona tried to slow their approach with her ice, freezing a few of the yokai in their tracks. However, for every one she froze, five more took its place! Their only option was to continue running.
They barely stayed ahead of these savage spirits, than Nate noticed someone ahead of them. Zoey and Lina seemed to have been walking in their direction.
"Hey Nate, How you doing?" Zoey called out.
"ZOEY! CALL CLOVER!" Nate yelled back.
"Um… why?" Zoey donned a confused face.
"I'M BEING CHASED BY AN ARMY OF KILLER YOKAI, JUST DO IT!" he friend yelled.
"Oh ho, I've been ready for this!" The bespeckled girl said, taking the medal from her pocket, "Clover, I call your power from beyond the grave! Yokai medal, let's do this!"
She inserted the coin into her watch, which chimed, "Summoning, Shady!"
"Marvelous thee, gutsy banshee sing song, Shady!"
"Slimamander!" the three headed yokai appeared before them. His single eye widened as it saw the vast army of black yokai.
"Zoey…" Lina said in a worried tone, "I'm sensing a lot of negative energy coming this way."
"GO TO TOWN ON THEM, CLOVER!" her friend yelled.
The former noko understood, "Protect… FRIENDS!"
He charged forward, getting between the army and the running trio. His eye rolled back into his body as all three mouths began to spit fire like a raging, multi headed dragon. The various black yokai attempted to fly around the reptilian beast, but he didn't let them get by that easily. Occasionally he'd stop spitting fire, then bite down on their forms.
"Zoey, you're a life saver," Nate said catching his breath.
Damona huffed, before swirling her purple aura, "Shiny Chaos!"
Her blast of dark energy was able to cut a hole through the army, but unfortunately they were still vast in numbers. Even with Clover fighting them back, they were still fast approaching.
"Man, these ugly things don't know when to quit!" Nate exclaimed as Zoey and Lina were looking around with their watches.
"Um… Nate?" Zoey started.
"We can't see them," Lina finished.
"You can't what!?" Nate and Damona said in shock. As it would appear, these yokai were hidden to even the yokai watch… something was effecting others in the area.
"Welp, we had a good run, katie!" Komasan said, "thank ya kindly for lettin me stay with ya!"
"Happy to help!" Katie replied, "be sure to tell me when you get to your new place!"
"Sure will!" the lion dog said, walking off with his brother, "call me any time!"
"Ah, sad to see the little guy go," Whisper sighed, "so, should I rent out his part of the room?"
"No… why would you think I'd want to do-" "KATIE!" Shadow's voice interrupted the girl as she phased through the wall.
"I sense something, I'm not sure what it is but it is dark, violent and numerous!" the humanoid yokai said.
"HA!" Whisper said, "yeah right, if that were to be true, I would have already mutated into Scream!"
"I'm sure, something is approaching," the shadowy yokai said, at that moment, he felt a presence behind him, he leapt away in time to dodge a black, Snake like yokai crash into the ground where he had stood.
"AHHH!" Whisper screamed, "A wicked yokai?!"
"I told you!" Shadow said, grabbing Katie and hoisting her over his shoulder.
"Wha, SHADOW! PUT ME DOWN!" the human girl screamed in objection.
"Not until I can assure your safety!" the ninja yokai replied, he jumped into the air and landed on the roof of the house, where he noticed that the serpent hadn't come alone, "they're everywhere…"
"WHO IS?" Katie asked again, she was getting fed up with this.
"Wicked yokai, they're incredibly dangerous, I have to get you out of here!" Shadow answered, he began leaping from building to building, trying to avoid the black yokai.
"WAIT FOR ME!" Whisper yelled floating after them.
Also happening at this time, Gabriel, Komane, and other exorcists were attempting to contain these violent yokai.
"What the hey are these things doin' here?" Komane asked as he began firing at some of the more humanoid yokai.
"Yeah! The Wicked haven't surfaced in like sixty years!" a female exorcist said, inserting a medal into her watch, summoning her Dragon familiar, which then charged at the attacking yokai.
"It doesn't matter," Gabriel said, throwing one of his grenades, "we have to stop them. If they are left to their devices this city will be a cesspool of negative energy, which will only attract more wickeds."
Komane leaped up and clawed into a Wicked's chest, destroying its form in a puff of smoke. His eyes widened when the yokai left no soul behind.
"Uh, Gabe?" He called to his partner, "these things ain't got souls!"
After destroying a wicked himself, Gabriel nodded, "they're constructs! They look like yokai but they're just extensions of another yokai's power."
"But, the only wicked yokai powerful enough to create this many constructs…" a third exorcist younger than the other two started in fear.
"We're dealing with a Wicked Overlord," the expression on Gabriel's face turned grim.
Back with Nate and co, they were in desperate need of back up! He had summoned Swelterrier and Robonyan to aid them. The former had already fallen, while the ladder was just barely holding their shadowside form.
Clover began swirling his slimy, purple aura, ready to unleash his soultimate move, "TRIPLE, TROUBLE!"
He violently swung his heads around like maces, knocking around the wicked yokai.
"You go, Clover! Beat those invisible jerks!" Zoey and Lina cheered in unison.
"WE CAN'T TAKE MUCH MORE OF THIS!" Damona yelled as she froze another one. She turned to her fiance, "I think it's time we bring out our latest trump card!"
"Right!" her fiance replied taking out his only golden medal, "Come on out my friend! Calling, Shogunyan! Yokai medal, do your thing!"
He inserted the medal, his watch chiming with orchestral music, "oh, Summoning time? SUMMONING, LEGENDARY!"
"Shogunyan has arrived!" the armoured nekomata said landing on his feet, "how might I be of assistance?"
"Actually, I got an idea!" Nate said, setting his watch to the zero function, "use your soultimate!"
"Right,"the samurai cat began to charge his golden aura, adding to it, Damona and Jibanyan's auras began to poor into him. When he finished, he shot into the air with the force of a jet, "BONITO BLADE... MOXIE!"
Shogunyan's aura was absorbed into his blade, causing it to grow in golden light, until it was the size of a skyscraper! The cat took one mighty swing, the forms of the wicked yokai disintegrating from the katanna's light. The overcharged soultimate's radius was large enough that nearly the entire army was effected, save for a few stragglers.
"Well, that's another plan failed," Kin sighed.
"We'll make note of it, should we return to her majesty?" Gin asked.
"Yes, she'll no doubt want to know of this," her sister answered. The two than disappeared in puffs of smoke.
"Ok, that was legendary!" Nate said as Shogunyan landed.
"No wicked is a match for my power," Shogunyan said in pride.
Damona came up to her fiance, "well, I think we know half of what the big cat was trying to tell us, they're back."
"Who were they?" Nate asked her.
Damona's face turned serious, "the Wicked tribe."
