It's been a rough few days, Jordan was having consistent nightmares since losing Jules. She was terrified of losing her father, Erin or even one of the others. She didn't have a lot of family. Her father's team was her family.
One night Hank was fast asleep, the house was quiet, it had taken him a good while for him to put Jordan to bed because she was scared. He stayed watching her until she was fully asleep.
It was almost 1:30 in the morning, Hank jumped awake when he heard a loud cry. He shot up hearing his daughter cry and scream. Jordan was thrashing in her bed fighting.
"No….Daddy...come back…..No! Daddy!" She cried in her sleep.
Hank ran in her room and to her bedside he immediately pulled her into his arms. "Jo, wake up sweetheart, wake up. It's only a dream. You're dreaming. Wake up baby"
After a few minutes she stopped and slowly woke up. She looked and saw her father.
"Daddy" She choked out.
"It's alright baby, it's gonna be ok. I'm right here" He kissed her head.
Hank managed to get his daughter back to sleep. A loud alarm had woken the older man and realized it was the alarm clock, it was now 6 in the morning. He groaned, why did the morning have to come so fast? Looking around he realized he fell asleep in his daughter's room, he glanced down to see his daughter fast asleep. He figured 10 more minutes shouldn't hurt before he had to get her up..
Leaving the room Hank had gone to his room to grab some clothes and headed for the shower. Once he was finished he was dressed in a long sleeve shirt, jeans, and his boots. He shaved quickly. Once he was finished he went to check on his daughter.
Jordan was just getting up for the day, she had quickly made up her bed and got her clothes for the day. She had one of her brother's shirts, they may have been too big for her but she didn't care. They reminded her of her brother. He peeked in knocking on the door.
"Morning sweetheart" Hank says with a smile.
Looking over to see her father she gave a small smile as well. "Morning daddy"
"How are you?"
"I'm ok"
The older father sighed and patted the bed for her to sit next to him, the preteen took the hint and sat next to her father. Hank had pulled her close.
"I know losing Jules was unexpected and very hard, but sweetheart I can promise you nothing is gonna happen to me or the others. We'll look out for one another, we got each other's backs. Always. We'll always come home. And always remember that no matter what happens, I'll always come back to you and your brother. Come hell or highwater, I'm coming home to the both of you. You two mean more to me than any job. I can work anywhere. But I can never get two special and amazing kids like you and Justin"
Smiling the preteen hugged her father. "I love you daddy"
He held her back tighter. "I love you too baby. I love you so much. Finish getting ready for school so we can head out"
"No school today, teachers have conferences"
"You're coming with me to the district"
"Can't I stay home dad? Please"
"Not a chance, two reasons. One you're too young to be home alone. Two, you're still grounded"
"But dad!"
"No buts. Get your stuff together before we're late. I gotta make a stop before I go in"
"Fine"
The teen took a quick shower and did her hair in a simple braid, once she had her stuff they headed out. Just as Jordan pulled her phone out Hank took it and put it in his pocket.
"Dad!"
"You obviously don't know how this grounding thing works. Grounded means no phone, no tv, no anything. When we get to the district your gonna do whatever school work needs to be done before tomorrow"
"That's so not fair"
"Don't do the crime, if you can't pay the time"
"When's Justin coming home?"
He had just pulled off when she asked the same question for what seemed like the millionth time. He had sighed, truth be told he didn't even know when his son was getting out of jail. He'd been in jail for over a year, he remembers the day he went to jail. On his little girl's 11th birthday. It was a bad day for everyone. They won't even begin to tell Jordan the truth on why her brother went to jail. She'd be devastated.
When Jordan turned 12, she didn't even wanna do anything. She didn't wanna celebrate. Not without her brother. It wouldn't feel right.
"I don't know yet sweetheart. Hopefully soon"
Hank had kept driving and stopped at a restaurant, he ordered some food as did Jordan. Anthony had walked in. Hank had given his daughter a look, she took the hint and went to sit at the counter while they talked.
"Want some breakfast?"
"No, I'm good".
"I talked to your aunt. She said it's fine. Got a room for you and everything".
"When's this happening?"
"She'll be here tomorrow night".
"It's not quick enough".
"She's taking the day off from work and driving here from Pittsburgh. That's as soon as she can do it. Something going on I should know about?"
Jordan tried to lean back slightly to hear, Hank drank some coffee and glanced at his daughter and gave her a look. She turned back around.
"Trayzell said I got to do a hit".
"When?"
"I don't know. He said to just be ready. I gotta reprove myself to him".
"Okay. You're staying with me now. I'll take you to my place".
"I don't need a place to crash. I need to get out. You said you'd do that for me".
"And I will".
"I'm trusting you, man".
Jordan had gone back to her father, hank wiped his mouth and put his napkin down.
"Jordan what have I told you about eavesdropping?"
"It's wrong and to not do it"
"Don't get any and I mean any ideas about involving yourself in this case or any police work for that matter. It's too dangerous and I don't want you getting hurt or involved"
"I won't. I promise"
The father and daughter left heading to the district, it was nearing 8 which meant the team was coming in soon. She had heard there was a new guy on the team, Adam Ruzek. Her uncle, Alvin Olinsky had pulled him straight from the academy. The pre teen hadn't officially met him yet, she was hoping to today.
After a quick drive Hank parked the car, Jordan grabbed her bag that she left unzipped. She took off inside as her father watched chuckling. Jordan was rushing in the District. Her backpack hanging off her shoulder wide open she kept looking back behind her when she got inside. She wasn't paying attention when she bumped into someone and her stuff from her backpack was everywhere.
"Sorry, guess I wasn't paying attention". Jordan says.
"It's alright, let me help you with that". Adam replies.
The young girl looked up at him and smiled. "You must be Adam Ruzek, the new guy".
"I am and you are".
"My name's Jordan but everyone calls me Jo".
"Nice to meet you Jo, you need some help with something?"
"I'm good, I came with my dad today".
"You're dad's a cop?"
"Yup he works in Intelligence".
"Really? Who's your dad?"
"Ruzek you coming or what?" Hank says going around them.
"Hi daddy". Jordan greeted her father.
"I see you finally made it inside sweetie". Hank hugged his daughter.
The older Sergeant then looked to his new officer. "Ruzek, I see you met my daughter Jordan".
"I did, we just met". Adam said.
Hank quickly looked back to his daughter. "Jo you'll be staying with Trudy while we work alright. If you need anything I'm right upstairs".
"Ok dad".
He kissed her head and she kissed his cheek, Hank then went up to the squad. Adam was speechless. He had a feeling that Hank had a child but wasn't sure, the young girl chuckled looking at the officer's face.
"I get that look sometimes, he won't bite your head off or chew you out".
"What's it like having him for a dad?"
"He's the best dad ever. He can be a little overprotective but all dads are like that".
"My dad's like that. So you got any brothers or sisters?"
"I have one older brother, Justin. He's in jail right now but they said he should come home soon hopefully. Erin she's practically like my sister, she's known me since I was two".
"That's pretty cool".
"You should go, I don't want you to get in trouble".
"I won't get in trouble".
Jordan chuckled. "You don't know my dad quite yet. It was nice meeting you Adam".
"You too Jo".
Jordan found her way to her godmother's desk and sat up next to her. Trudy looked to see her goddaughter.
"There's my favorite goddaughter," Trudy said, kissing her head.
"I'm you're only goddaughter Aunt Trudy" Jordan chuckled.
"All the more reason you're my favorite. I saw you met the newbie in your dad's unit"
"He seems cool, I think he'll fit right in"
Upstairs Adam was walking with Alvin talking, they stopped for a moment when the new officer brought up a new subject.
"I knew it Al, Voight does have a kid. I met her today. Her name is Jordan-" He was cut off by the older detective.
"I'm gonna stop you right there. Don't go opening your mouth about that. Hank doesn't tell people about her for a reason. He doesn't want her caught up in this. He doesn't want her getting hurt"
"Duly noted"
"I'm not trying to come off as a hard ass but he just doesn't wanna see his daughter hurt. And I don't wanna see my niece hurt"
"Totally understand"
"Let's get to work"
Everyone was in the bullpen as Hank was going over their current case for the day. "All right, there are two unrelated wire investigations. Followed by three of the central area's top-ranking gang targets to this house on Carpenter. Narcotics has not gotten anywhere with it. Roll out in five".
Jordan was going up to see her father, she was bored. She hated how she was being treated like a giant baby, she wished he'd treat her like her age and not five anymore. Just as she got to the top she saw Antonio looking at Adam as the new officer was about to take Jules' desk.
"Hey, hey, what are ya doing?" Antonio asked a bit angrily.
"I need a desk". Adam answered, trying to set his stuff down.
"Not that one. That was Willhite's desk. I'll let everyone know when someone can use it".
Adam moved his stuff some place else, the preteen had gone over to her uncle figure giving him a look. The senior detective looked to see his young niece.
"What's with the look for?" Antonio asked her.
"You know what the look is for. He didn't know Tonio. He's new don't chew him out over a mistake" She went and hugged him. "I know how much Jules meant to you and all of us. She was like a mom to me"
The senior detective had sighed and held his young niece, his partner's death hit him hard. When he and Jules got partnered up before he transferred to intelligence, he'd often ask her to help watch Jordan if he and Erin couldn't. Eventually the young Voight had grown to like the woman, besides Trudy and Meredith, Jules was the only other woman that Jordan saw as a mother. And just like that, she was gone.
"Thanks kiddo, I think I needed this"
"Anytime and no more jumping down Adam's throat"
"I'll try not to"
After going to see everyone else the preteen had made it to her father's office, Hank was gearing up as he was putting his vest on.
"Need some help?" Jordan asked her father.
Turing to see his young daughter Hank strapped his vest. "I got it sweetheart. And I thought I told you to stay with Trudy. I don't like you up here when we're going over cases. This isn't something you should be looking at or even remotely listening to"
"Relax dad, I didn't hear anything I wasn't supposed to and Jay turned the whiteboard before I could even see anything. I just wanted to see you before you head out. I try to when I can"
Hank had a feeling he knew where his daughter was going with this, when she would be at the district and they had to roll out she'd always see her father and the others. The older man occasionally didn't mind it, it put some of his mind at ease. Just being able to hold her for a moment he'd always hope it wouldn't be his last time holding her.
Going over to his daughter he hugged her close, Jordan wrapped her arms around her father holding him tightly, her face pressed against his vest. She closed her eyes tightly to block the stinging and burning tears, her lip quivered. The last time they had gone out, one of them didn't return. She didn't want that to be her father or anyone else.
Looking down to see his daughter holding back her tears, it broke his heart. The older father bent down to her level. "Hey, hey, it's alright sweetheart. We're gonna be fine. I promise. We have each other's back, we'll all come back I promise. What's the one thing I always tell you before I leave" He wiped away a tear from her cheek.
"You'll always come home. You'll always come back to me and Justin" She sniffed.
"And I'll always mean those words. I'm not going anywhere for a long time. It's my job to watch them knuckleheads out there and it's all of our job to watch out for each other"
The preteen had chuckled a bit when her father had said that, Hank smiled and kissed her head. "Were all coming home tonight I promise"
Jordan wrapped her arms around him, she was gathering his scent like she did when she was younger. "I love you daddy"
"I love you too baby girl"
She had gone to open her father's office door, everyone had looked at the young girl with curious looks even Hank did.
"You guys are all gonna go home tonight, I know you will" She told them.
A smile appeared on Hank's face, she had sounded just like him. Erin smiled and moved to hug her sister.
"You bet we're coming home tonight" Erin told her with a smile.
She had kissed her sister's head and Jordan kissed Erin's cheek. Before Jordan knew they all had hugged her. The pre teen had headed downstairs back to her aunt. Trudy had stepped away for a cup of coffee. Jordan had started her school work she had for the day.
The two patrol officers, Kim and Kevin were coming in starting for the day, they had seen the young girl at the desk. They were growing fond of her, she was like a younger sister to him. For Kevin, it was almost like having two sisters.
"What's up Jo?" Kim smiles at the young girl.
Looking over the young Voight smiled. "Hey guys"
"I thought you'd be at school," Kevin said.
"Teachers have conferences so no school, just school work" She had held up her books. "I wanted to stay at home alone but my dad wouldn't let me. He said I'm too young. I'm 12, I'm not that young. If anything I'm old enough and mature enough to stay home alone"
"Well I kinda agree with him" Kim told her.
"I do see his point of view on things," Kevin added.
She groaned. "Not you guys too, be on my side. Not his"
"He's only looking out for you kiddo"
"Yeah he doesn't wanna see you get hurt" Kim told her.
"I guess so" She sighed, writing her report.
"Whatcha writing?"
"Book report for English"
"And she needs all the concentration she can get," Trudy says, coming over with her coffee.
The preteen chuckled. "I'm halfway finished Aunt Trudy, I started yesterday"
"And I'd like for you to have all of it finished so you don't get into it with your dad"
"I will I promise"
Trudy got her newspaper and opened it as she began to read it. Kim then looked at her.
"Hey, Sarge. You got a Calhoun County Sheriff?" Kim asked.
"No, that's a beauty". Trudy answered.
"Yeah, my cousin's dating a guy that works in Corpus Christi"
"Well, you tell your cousin a "thank you" from me"
"What about the one I gave you?"
"Walla Walla? Yeah, I traded that one".
"Nice work". Kevin commented.
"Thank you. My friends are coming into town. I want to give them the grand tour. I'd rather not have Platt deep-sixing it".
Jordan chuckled. "You guys are too funny"
Kim and Kevin had eventually gone out to do their patrol, Intelligence had come back and went upstairs. Hank was putting his phone back in his pocket when he felt a small force crash against him knocking him back. Jordan had tackled her father in a hug and held him tightly.
The older father had chuckled and put a gentle hand on the back of her head, he gently stroked her hair back. "Well hello to you too sweetheart"
"Are you guys alright?"
"We're all just fine honey. We're all back in one piece"
"None of you had gotten hurt either?"
"None of us got hurt and were all ok"
"You do a great job at keeping everyone safe daddy"
He smiled and kissed her head. Not all the time, he thought to himself.
"I try my best to keep them safe upstairs, and I do my very best to keep you and your brother safe as well"
"You keep me and Justin safe a little too well"
"I guess I'm that good. Go back and finish your work"
"Alright"
He kissed her head one last time and sent her to Trudy's desk to finish her work. He headed back upstairs, the team had gone over the new evidence they had found when they were out. Hank had gone to the board to glance it over then looked to his team.
"And with any luck, we're gonna make mistakes, okay? Eyes open. Erin, come here a second, will you?"
"Do you want the door closed?" Erin asked entering the office.
"Assume I always want it closed".
"Okay, tough guy".
"Justin's getting early release. He's moved up to Friday night".
"That's great".
"Well, he's asking if you can be there. It's no big deal if you can't".
"Are you crazy? Of course it's a big deal. He's getting out".
"Yeah".
"What? Why do you look like somebody just pissed in your coffee?"
"Getting out is always harder than getting in".
"Hank. Come on. Justin's gonna need you around, okay? The tough love thing, it didn't work and I really hope for Jordy's sake. You two really need to work out whatever issues you have. The whole fight last year, it really hurt and confused her. She blamed herself because of it".
"Do me a favor. Tell Antonio I'll be back in an hour, okay?"
"Yeah. Hey are we gonna tell Jordy? She'll be psyched"
"No, I wanna make it a surprise for her"
"I'll set everything up"
"Thank you"
Hank left his office, he went down to see his little girl back at Trudy's desk. She was just finishing her work as he went over to her.
"Hey sweetheart, I have to run an errand for a bit. I want you to finish your work and behave. No leaving the district" He told his daughter.
She frowned. "But you just got back"
"I know, something came up and I have to take care of something"
"Can I just come with you?"
"No. Absolutely not, what I'm doing is gonna be dangerous. I'm not having you caught in anything"
"Alright. When I've finished my work, can I at least go upstairs? I'm bored just sitting here"
"I guess as long-" He was cut off by his daughter.
"As long as I don't see or hear anything I shouldn't. I know dad"
He chuckled and kissed her head and left out. As he went out to his car he couldn't stop thinking in just a few short days he would have both his children back. His family would once again be complete. He would be whole again. Being in prison away from both of them that had been torture enough. Not seeing either of his children, having his oldest son in a hell hole and people knowing he's the son of a cop. He didn't want that for his son.
The older man had let what Erin said sink in. He and Justin both did have to work out whatever issues they had. If not for them, for Jordan. They didn't wanna put her in the middle of picking between them. She loved, adored and cherished her father and brother. They meant the world to her. Neither of them wanted to do to her what they did the year before.
Being away from his daughter had been even more hell, a little girl at just 11 watched as her family was torn and ripped from her in the blink of an eye. He didn't wanna imagine the emotional pain she had gone through the whole time.
Shaking his head he was forgetting what happened, it was time to think about the now. He had his little girl with him and soon he was gonna have his son back with him. The small Voight family would be back and stronger than ever.
