Elma: "This child has been crying all night. I can't get her to stop. I tried changing her twice, putting on different clothes, feeding her, burping her. I just don't know what's wrong with her."
She has bags under her eyes and wears a frown. She tries to soothe Yuka while holding her.
Me: "I'll take her."
Elma gives me her. I realize it might be she's teething. I feel her gum gently and sure enough there is a hard bump.
Me: "She's teething. Luckily we're prepared. I have a teething ring, some gauze and medicine. I hope the Tylenol eases her pain."
Elma: "Nai, I could kiss you right now. I've been trying to figure it out for hours."
I place the teething ring in Yuka'a mouth and she happily chews it.
She stops wailing to our relief.
Elma: "Her brother is not eating. I've been trying to nurse him and feed him."
Nai: "The book says every baby reacts differently to teething. He's teething too but he's not crying like Yuka. I think you should try giving him soft foods like plain yogurt."
I give Yuka Tylenol. Her cheeks are red and her eyes look stressed. Next, I take a wet gauze and gently rub her gums. Her little hands move up indicating she likes it.
My baby...I kiss her forehead.
"Please feel better honey."
Lucoa comes over and places a sleep spell on Yuka so she would get some rest and feel better.
Lucoa: "Elma you need to rest too. I don't want to have to put you under a sleep spell too."
Nai: " I know. I told her the same."
Elma: "I just can't sleep when something is wrong with my kids."
Lucoa: "She'll be fine. She's only growing teeth. It's a painful process for some dragons. Your little Yuka is a strong fighter."
Me: "Elma! Go to bed. I'll stay up until they all fall asleep."
Elma: "Wake me up if you need help."
Me: "Good morning Elma" I bring a little Yuka to her bedside. She yawns and takes the baby.
Me: "Your daughter got her first tooth. It's in the back."
Elma cries happy tears. She holds her against her chest and looks at her face. She's still biting on her ice cream cone teething toy.
Elma: "You didn't get any sleep, did you Nai?"
Me: "I didn't want to sleep just to wake up to wails so I stayed up all night. They slept like a log."
Elma: "Get some sleep now. Let me look after Yuka."
Me: "You shouldn't feel like you need to do this all alone. That's why I'm here."
Elma: "You know I can't do this without you. I love you." She smooches me.
