Chapter Forty-One: Valentine's Day*
(February 14th, 2018, Wednesday Noon)
"That makes the third person," Mavis said, reading from the report Erza had written. Her somber eyes looked up before folding the paper, making a mental note to write it down in the main journal later. "Who found her?"
"Her granddaughter," Erza replied, ignoring the dull ache in her heart. It hadn't been the first person to die on base, and she doubted it would be the last. "She's being calmed down while someone goes in and cleans their room. I think she'll get better with a few days off from work."
Mavis nodded before taking a heavy breath. "That's what we did for the other families, so I see no reason why she can't take time off to grieve."
"Is there anything else you need me for?" Erza asked, relieved when Mavis shook her head. It had been a long morning, and it showed no signs of ending soon.
"You're dismissed. Thank you."
Erza said nothing, merely nodding before exiting the main office. She made her way outside, welcoming the frigid air. It made her feel alive, more real after everything that had happened over the last week.
She patrolled the fence, looking for any weak spots or threats. She couldn't count how many times she had walked around the area, lost track of how many times she thought to herself, 'Is this it from now on?'
The undead and starving were not their only fears anymore. Sickness had spread throughout the base despite their efforts to keep it contained. For most, it only caused an inconvenience, like with her husband, who was resting in bed after coming down with the flu.
But for those with weaker immune systems, it proved to be a fatality.
Three people had passed away after coming down with the flu, but to be fair, they were already in bad shape. They were elderly people, in their late seventies and up. After the first passed, Grandeeney had given the most care to the children, knowing they were at risk more than the regular adults at base.
Erza stopped in her tracks, reaching out to grab a pole on the fence. She squeezed as hard as she could, feeling the waves flood her body, unrelenting until she couldn't hold it back.
She doubled over as a cry left her lips, her teeth gnashing together a second later, still trying to contain herself.
Now wasn't the time to feel sorry. Compassion was something she couldn't afford while on duty. She was entrusted to keep the base safe, along with the other guards.
'Later,' she thought to herself, her shaky hand pulling her up as she struggled for breath. 'Later you can feel.'
Erza swallowed, eyes darting around to make sure no one saw her weakness. She only allowed one person to truly see her, and with his new condition, she doubted he could comfort her.
"He'll be alright," she said, but she couldn't hear her voice, only the leaves as the wind blew through the nearby evergreens. "Pull yourself together for fuck's sake."
Erza straightened her shoulders, her eyes sharpening before she marched forward. Jellal would be fine. There was no reason to worry. People died, every day, but that was part of life. She still had more time with him.
She just had to be patient and strong for the both of them while he recovered.
"Can you pass the glitter?" Asuka asked, hand already reaching for the small tube.
Natsu nodded before handing it over, his eyes falling back to his task at hand. He carefully cut the construction paper, wanting it to be perfect.
"Who's that for?" Romeo asked, causing Natsu to grin.
"Lucy. You think she's gonna like it?"
The boy laughed before nodding. "Are you gonna ask her to be your girlfriend today?"
Natsu's head jolted back as his eyes widened, wondering why Romeo would think that. "What? No, what the fu— I mean heck?"
"Why are you acting so surprised?" he asked, raising a dark brow. "I thought you two were basically dating already."
Natsu couldn't stop the nervous laughter from spilling out, shaking his head. "No, no no. Lucy and I aren't like that. We're just friends."
"But you're always hanging out together?" The boy cocked his head while Asuka chimed in.
"She makes you smile real big!"
Natsu stared at the little girl for a moment before shrugging. "Yeah, but that doesn't mean we're dating or anything. We're just friends. Don't your friends make you smile?"
From behind him, he heard Romeo snicker. "Not like that."
"Alright, can it you two," Natsu grumbled, wanting to end their ridiculous assumptions. "Me and her are just friends, nothing else goin' on. Got it?"
"If you say so," Romeo said, going back to his Valentine's Day card. All the kids in class were making arts and crafts, and Natsu decided to join along since Lucy was still resting.
She had gotten considerably better over the past week, but she still had a few more days to go before she was feeling one-hundred percent.
Then again, did anyone feel one-hundred percent lately?
Over half the kids in class were missing due to the illness. Natsu had been lucky, spared from it despite putting himself in harm's way again and again. Despite knowing better, he couldn't bring himself to leave Lucy alone, especially when it came to sleeping. He kept expecting himself to wake up sick every morning, but just like that morning, he woke up just fine.
"What a lovely flower," the teacher for the day said, smiling down at him.
"Thanks!" Natsu beamed as he grabbed a red crayon, drawing little specks on the ends of the 'petals', hoping Lucy would like it.
"Are you making anything for your other friends?" Romeo asked, causing Natsu's eye to twitch.
Instead of hesitating, which would let Romeo know he hadn't planned on making anything else for his friends, Natsu rushed out, "Of course! Why wouldn't I?"
"Hmm, just curious."
Natsu held in a grumble, realizing he would have to follow through. He wanted to put more details into Lucy's flower, but now he had to prove his gift for Lucy had no ulterior motives aside from friendship.
By the end of the hour, Natsu had cut construction paper into a snowflake for Gray, a wine glass for Cana, a book for Levy, a sword for Erza, and a knight from the game 'chess' for Jellal.
Just for the fun of it, he made a little cutout of a fish for Happy, even though the feline wouldn't understand the meaning.
"Natsu!" Asuka yelled, pushing her card in front of him. "Can you write 'spectacular'? I can't spell it?"
Natsu smiled, nodding before grabbing a scratch piece of paper, showing Asuka how to write it instead of writing it himself. After a few tries, she wrote it on her card, doing fairly well. "Who's your card for?" he asked, causing the girl to squeal.
"My daddy! I want him to take it with him since mommy says he's going away for a while."
Natsu's face tightened as he forced his smile to remain, his stomach sinking. He wondered how much the girl understood what was happening. Tomorrow morning a small group was heading out to Hargeon. Their plan was to be back in two weeks, but that was a guess, and only if they didn't face any difficult challenges there or back.
"He'll really like that," Natsu said, giving the girl a pat on the head before looking back at his artwork. Deciding he did enough to get Romeo off his back, he went back to his flower, having fun coloring it while thinking about the road ahead.
He had finally talked to Lucy about the mission, three days ago. He wanted to tell her sooner, but he waited until she was starting to feel better before breaking the news. Thankfully for him, she had taken it better than he imagined.
"Hargeon?" Lucy asked, sitting in bed with the covers wrapped around her legs. She yawned, her hair a mess and face flushed, but her voice didn't sound nearly as raspy as it had been. "Gildarts is there, right?"
Natsu nodded. He had told Lucy about the man a few times, but he always seemed like a character in a story rather than a real person. If they could bring him back, Fairy Tail would be a little more whole. "Yeah. We're gonna go try to find him, and check out the naval base, and look at the ships left."
"Don't be surprised if all the ships left," Lucy said, causing him to sigh.
"Yeah. It would be a good way to keep the undead away. Hell, even if it didn't leave the harbor or whatever they call them. Oh, I think it's called the docks?"
"Anyways," Lucy said, giving him a small smile as she waited for him to carry on.
"Right. Anyways, we're leaving Thursday morning. We're gonna go out there and look around, maybe even bring back some survivors."
He saw Lucy's throat move as she tried concealing her gulp. A frown tugged at his lips before cocking his head. "What's wrong?"
"I..." She clenched her teeth, a rare emotion flashing through Lucy's eyes. It was only rare because he hadn't seen it in a while, but he recognized it easily.
Fear.
"Lucy?" he asked, voice growing softer. He scooted closer, debating if he should reach out to comfort her, but he decided against it, wanting to wait until he found out the problem.
"Short," Lucy started, needing a deep breath. "One, of them. He... he's a sh-short man, with..."
Her eyes squeezed shut, shaking her head. "Never mind."
"No, what is it?" Natsu asked, seeing tears forming. "What's wrong? Talk to me."
"What... if you bring... bring b... back," her voice started cutting out. He wouldn't be surprised if she wasn't breathing. "One of... of them?"
Natsu grasped her shoulder, leaning in to carefully take her chin in his fingers before tilting her head up. The only thing she saw was him. "Hey, I'm not gonna bring back any bad guys," he said, adding that task to the overall mission.
With some quick thinking, he added, "How about if we bring anyone back, you have to look at them first and you tell me if any of them are the bastards that hurt you?"
Lucy swallowed, giving him a meek nod. "Promise?"
"Absolutely." He knew Makarov and Laxus would have no problems with that. They wanted to find Ivan, and if they found any of his henchmen, they might be able to lead Fairy Tail to that lunatic's whereabouts.
"You have my word," Natsu said, holding her gaze, "I won't let anyone in who would hurt you."
Her chin shook as more tears filled her eyes, Lucy nodding before whispering, "Thank you."
He couldn't help but smile, letting go of her chin before snaking his hand around her back, feeling her lean into his hug. "I already told ya I'd protect ya. I gotcha, don't worry." Natsu gave her a soft squeeze, feeling her shake in his arms.
"I promise, no one's gonna hurt you so long as I'm around. If they try, I'll just burn 'em to ash!"
"Luuuucy," Natsu called, holding back a laugh. "I'm home!"
"That got old three weeks ago," Lucy deadpanned, looking up at him from the desk. His phone was in front of her, playing a rerun show before she paused it.
Natsu raised a brow before closing and locking the door. "But I only started it like three weeks ago?"
"I know," she said, no waver in her voice.
Natsu sighed as he pouted, dramatically walking over to the desk. "Fine. I won't say it anymore."
Lucy shook her head, a small smile gracing her lips. "You're silly."
"And you're weird, but you don't see me saying it."
Her eyes widened as she snapped her head to the side, ready to call him out on his lie, but he held his hand up.
"Alright, maybe I say it every once in a while."
Lucy chuckled, eyes softening as he came over to her. He set some construction paper cutouts on the desk, immediately gaining her attention. "What's that?"
"Glad you asked," Natsu said with a grin, spreading them out for her to see.
She looked through them, easily guessing who some of them represented. "Who's the knight for?"
Natsu blinked, surprised she didn't think it was just a horse. "Jellal. It's his favorite game. Do you play?"
Lucy nodded, pushing the bangs out of her eyes as she set it down. "Yeah. My dad taught me to play. I'm not as good as he is..." She closed her mouth, her eyes dimming. "I'm not as good as he was, but I think I'm pretty good."
Deciding he didn't want Lucy's mood ruined, Natsu steered the subject in his favor. "Maybe when you and Jellal are all healed up, you two can challenge each other?"
Lucy looked up, cocking her head. "Okay, but can I play against you too?"
Natsu shook his head, feeling his cheeks get a little hot. "Um, I'm not really good at it, honestly. Apparently I make risky moves in the beginning which leaves me open for attacks later on? I dunno. I've only played like three times before giving up."
"I'm sure you could learn some good strategies if you kept playing."
Natsu shrugged, unsure. "I like real fights better. It's easier to read my opponent and build strategies that way. I still get to use my head but also my fists." He grinned, earning a laugh from Lucy.
"Suit yourself."
Lucy set aside the wine glass cutout before picking up the book. "Is this for me?" she asked, bright eyes glancing up at him again.
His chest tightened as he realized he would have to tell her no, worried he would disappoint her. 'Does she even like flowers? Fuck, maybe I shouldn't have done anything?'
"No," he said, holding back a sigh. "That's for Levy."
"Oh." Lucy looked down at it before setting it on the table, looking over the other cutouts. "That's cool."
"I did make you one," he said, seeing her examine what was left, a sword and a fish, both clearly not for her.
"You did?" She looked up, eyes falling to his hand as he reached in his back pocket.
Natsu nodded before pulling out the flower, handing it to her. "If you don't like it that's fine. I won't be offended or anything." Even as he said that, he knew he was wrong.
He didn't realize how much he wanted her to like it until he found himself staring at her with bated breath, waiting for her to give some type of reaction.
It didn't take long, Lucy's smile steadily growing as she ran her fingers over the 'petals', admiring his work. "You really made this for me?" she asked, eyes flitting between hers and the others before looking up. "It looks like..." She stopped herself, shaking her head before her eyes found the flower again. "It looks beautiful, Natsu. Thank you."
Natsu released his breath, feeling his tension melting away. He was worried she would say something about the difference between hers and everyone else's, but she didn't mention it. It was obvious he spent more time on her gift, but for some reason, he wanted to make hers extra special.
'No, that's not it.'
He hadn't even thought of making something for his other friends, merely doing it to get Romeo off his back. 'Why wouldn't I think of everyone else?'
While Natsu debated his reasons in his head, Lucy looked at the back of the flower, reading the words he wrote.
Happy Valentine's Day Lucy. Get well soon.
She bit her bottom lip, not wanting to smile any bigger or else she might look strange. She already decided what she wanted to do with it, finding the book she was currently reading, which sat in the corner of the desk. Flipping to the page she was on, she discarded her old bookmark and set the flower inside, making it her new bookmark so she could see it all the time.
"Thank you," she said, making her voice loud enough to break Natsu from his thoughts.
He looked down, giving her a toothy grin. "Glad you like it!"
"I love it."
They stared at each other, smiling until both realized they were being weird. Natsu was the first to break eye contact, clearing his throat before grabbing an extra chair to sit down. "So, how are you feeling now?"
"Better. Still feel sick, still feel awful, but overall better. It just sucks."
"At least it's not the end of the world." Natsu said, barely containing his laughter.
It took Lucy a few seconds to process what he said, her head turning towards him before rolling her eyes. "You're awful."
He barked out a laugh, giving her a shrug. "I think I'm hilarious!"
"Be honest, how long have you been waiting to use that?"
Natsu almost cackled as he admitted, "Like a day and a half."
The two burst into a fit of laughter until Lucy's turned into coughs, the woman reaching out to her glass of water to clear her throat. "I like most of your jokes," Lucy said, taking another gulp. "You're very unique."
Natsu ignored the warmth in his chest and the flush on his face, chalking it up to his laughing from a moment ago. It was hard to breathe while laughing, and lack of breathing would cause him some minor side effects.
Satisfied with his explanation, he felt comfortable saying, "You're pretty unique too."
"Good." Lucy said, surprised by a sudden yawn overpowering her. "I haven't really done anything all day but I still feel drained."
"I can imagine." Natsu looked at his watch, seeing they still had many hours left of their day off before dinner time. "Wanna be lazy and just watch movies in bed?"
"Honestly?" Lucy turned to him, already gripping the phone. "That sounds perfect."
"And how was your day Natsu?" Levy asked as the man sat down at the table. He planned on going straight to the room to give Lucy her food, but she insisted he spend time with his friends. He hadn't seen them much over the last week since taking care of Lucy took up most of his free time.
He wanted to argue, but she just gave him a soft smile and reassured him she would be alright. He didn't know why, but he folded without further debate. Besides, it would be the last day he saw most of them for a while.
'There was another reason I was supposed to see them, but now I can't remember.'
"I'm good," Natsu said, taking a seat beside her. "How was yours?"
"So so." She smiled as she picked up a carrot stick, fresh from the greenhouse garden. "Still doing lots of inventory, but you won't find me complaining."
"At least we finally cleaned out that store," Gray said, recalling how bare the place looked when they finally left it alone, spray painting a red slash on the door.
There were a few things Fairy Tail had changed over the seven months since the outbreak started. They were seeing what worked and what didn't, improving their procedures along the way.
Spray painting had remained the same for the most part, only now they made a single slash to conserve paint.
"There's a few more smaller stores right next to it, but mostly it's a church and fire station before we hit more neighborhoods again." Gray sighed, raking his fingers through his long black locks. It was about time he needed a haircut too.
"I bet the fire station has some cool stuff in it!" Natsu beamed while Levy and Cana laughed, paying more attention to Gray's newest predicament.
"When are you getting that cut?"
He suppressed a groan as he leaned back in his chair. "Tonight. Jenny agreed to take care of it before we leave."
"Oh right, I forgot that was tomorrow," Cana said, looking back and forth between Natsu and Gray. "Why do you two get all the cool jobs!"
"Do you want to go?" Natsu asked, raising a brow.
"Not really, but it would be nice to be asked." Cana pouted while Levy patted her back.
"There, there."
"I'm not as excited as I was when Gramps first told me about it," Gray admitted, slumping forward in his seat before grabbing his fork, only to poke at the various vegetables on his plate. "Kinda worried I'm not gonna get to shower for a while."
"It shouldn't take too long," Natsu said, trying to be optimistic. "Just get in, get out. That's our mission."
"Yeah, and that was Gildarts' mission too, but see where that got him?" For a moment, Gray forgot who else was around, his body tensing when he heard Levy clear her throat.
Gray turned his head to Cana, an apology spilling from his lips before he had time to think. "Fuck, I'm sorry! That was really messed up for me to say. I promise I didn't mean anything bad by it, just trying to get under this one's skin," he said, jerking a thumb towards Natsu.
"Hey!"
Natsu went ignored, but he was okay with the interruption when Cana spoke.
"I'm fine, really. He chose to go, he knew the risks, yada yada." She feigned boredom, dull eyes falling to her plate. "If you find him, cool. If not..." She didn't finish, and no one dared to say something about it.
"Hello," Erza said as she made it to the table. She had gotten off work late, resulting in her ending up at the back of the line for dinner. She had two plates with her, one for herself and one for Jellal for later.
"Yo!" Cana brightened up, welcoming the topic change. "How's it hanging?"
Erza gave her no reaction, merely nodding as she said, "I'm well. You?"
Natsu munched on his... well, he wasn't sure what to make of it. His dinner resembled a salad, but it wasn't the type he would normally get if the world wasn't the way it was.
It was loaded with vegetables without any cheese, but he did get something called 'Spicy Southwest Ranch' to put over his food. It wasn't the best, but it did make his dinner more enjoyable.
"Sucks Jellal's sick," Gray said, eyes subtly glancing at Cana a few times to make sure she wasn't angry at him for his earlier comment.
"Yeah, especially on Valentine's Day," Levy added, shoulders sagging.
Erza shook her head, giving her friends a smile. "It's okay. We don't really celebrate anyways."
"Did you two at least exchange cards this year?"
"With what cards?" Gray asked, tapping himself on the forehead a second later. "Right, I keep forgetting we can make shit."
"Oh! That reminds me!" Natsu remembered the other reason he was supposed to see his friends. He reached into his back pocket, carefully pulling out the cutouts. He thumbed through them, giving the first one to Levy before distributing the others.
"Wow, Natsu. That's really nice of you," Levy said, looking at the little book. It said 'Happy V-Day' on the back, along with a drawing of a quill pen and ink set. "That's really thoughtful. You shouldn't have."
"Yeah, you probably shouldn't have," Gray muttered, looking over the blue paper snowflake.
"I can take it back Popsicle Breath!" Natsu threatened, extending a hand over the table.
"Nah, I'm definitely gonna keep this in case you ever try to say you're not a softy. Seriously, who does this?"
While Natsu seethed, Erza smiled more, fingers running over the sword, wondering how ironic it would be if she got a paper cut. "It does seem out of character," she started, gaining Natsu's focus. "But, I'm not complaining. Jellal will like his as well."
"How's he doing?" Natsu asked, understanding Erza's worry better than everyone else at the table.
"He's keeping in high spirits. Sleeping a lot, but that's to be expected." Erza released a slow breath before straightening in her seat, not letting anyone see her fear. "Grandeeney says he'll make a full recover in a week or so."
"It's crazy that some people are dying from this," Levy said, shivering. "But I heard it's from pneumonia too, but I think those are kind of tied together."
"Good thing you wanted to be a doctor of the mind and not body," Cana said, causing Levy to snort.
While the others talked about the detour in Levy's career choice, Natsu went back to eating his dinner, happy the greenhouse was working well. He didn't enjoy vegetables that much, but a full plate was something to be thankful for.
He looked over at the extra plate beside him, the one for Lucy. His stomach jerked a bit at the thought of leaving her tomorrow when she wasn't fully healed, but at the rate she was going he was sure she would be feeling herself in a day or two.
'Good thing she's strong,' he thought. If the flu had hit her when she first arrived, he wouldn't be as confident, but the girl was a fighter.
She hadn't survived that long just to let a little flu bug take her out.
Before leaving the arena to take Lucy her dinner, Natsu made sure to hug his friends goodbye since he was leaving too early in the morning to see them then. He gave Gray a fist bump, telling him he would see him in the main office tomorrow, packed and ready to go on their mission.
With a heavy heart, Natsu walked through the cold air, then through the empty halls of the school. He wondered if he would miss being there when he was on the road with the others, but instead of dwelling on it, he did what he did best. He pushed his worries away for another day.
Natsu unlocked the door, happy to see Lucy was still up. She had been yawning up a storm before he left, and he wanted to spend time with her before bed. He would be leaving before they normally woke up, and he didn't want to disturb her sleep just to say goodbye.
Well, he did, but he refrained from doing so, for her sake.
"Hey," Lucy said once he walked in, giving him a smile. "Back so soon?"
"Soon? I felt like I was gone for hours."
Lucy shrugged, unsure since she didn't keep track. "What's for dinner tonight?"
Natsu crossed the room, holding out her plate. "Lots of veggies. Eat up!"
"Delicious," she said, no sarcasm detected in her voice. Lucy dug in, leaving nothing edible behind.
While she ate, Natsu noticed the gold peeking out from her long sleeves. It had been a while since he saw her wearing her charm bracelet. He knew she kept it safe, just like he kept his scarf safe.
'We're not that different,' Natsu thought, watching her eat until he realized that might come off as creepy. He made himself busy after that, taking Happy to go potty before getting ready for bed.
Lucy finished up just as he completed his journal entry for the day. He would miss writing in it while he was away, but he couldn't risk losing or damaging it while on the road. So, he tore out a few pieces of paper to write on while he was away. He packed his bag, keeping it light since Makarov was giving them supplies as well.
"You're not bringing much clothes," Lucy noted, but Natsu shrugged it off.
"I'll probably find stuff to wear while out. Don't wanna wear myself out with a heavy bag too."
Lucy nodded, accepting his reasons. "Are you nervous?"
"Kinda," he said, looking over his shoulder as he zipped up his backpack. "More excited than anything though."
Lucy smirked, her voice holding an odd ring to it. "Oh? That eager to get away from me?"
Natsu's eyes widened and his jaw dropped, ready to refute her claim. However, before he could get any words out, Lucy was already laughing.
"I'm just kidding. Jeez, you should really look at your face. It's kind of adorable."
Lucky for Natsu, the low lights coming from the moon kept Lucy from seeing the faint blush on his cheeks. "I'm not adorable," he pouted, sounding like a child.
"If you say so," she mumbled, dropping it for the time being. "I hope it goes by quickly." A yawn tore from her throat before she stood, putting her dishes away before grabbing her nightly essentials. "I'll be back."
Natsu nodded, watching as she left the room to go brush her teeth. He stretched before sitting in their bed, patting the side of it to get Happy to come over.
Typical of a cat, he stayed right where he was, resting on the edge of the desk. Natsu stuck out his tongue at Happy's defiance before yawning himself, knowing they needed to go to sleep soon. He had an early alarm set, wishing they could leave in the afternoon instead, but the more light they had the further they could travel on their first day.
"Miss me?" Lucy said as she came into the room, her voice slightly nasally. She didn't give Natsu a chance to answer, which was a good thing, seeing as he didn't know how to respond. "I'm so sick of being sick. Ready for this to be over."
"Won't be long," Natsu said, scooting over in bed when he saw her approach. She took off her jacket and shoes before slipping under the covers, shivering to herself as the heat rolling off Natsu's body slowly warmed her.
"Hope so. Then I can go back to being a productive member of Fairy Tail," she muttered, already curling up, ready for sleep.
Natsu rolled on his side, getting comfortable as well. "Good n—"
"You're going to be fine out there," Lucy whispered, the sudden seriousness in her tone throwing him off. He didn't know if she was asking or telling.
He blinked a few times, the moonlight giving their room a soft glow. Slowly, a smile formed on his face, hoping to ease any concern either of them had.
"Don't worry, I'll be just fine."
Lucy shifted under the blankets, her eyes averted as she mumbled, "Can I get a hug? Before you go?"
"Of course." Natsu reached out, easily grabbing Lucy since she was inches away from him. She moved forward, allowing him to wrap her in his arms, the two hugging beneath the covers.
Before he let go, Natsu whispered right next to her ear, "Nothing's gonna happen to me. I'll be back before you know it. I promise."
"You shouldn't make promises you can't keep."
Natsu smiled, eyes slipping shut as he whispered, "I never do."
