Chapter Seventy-Four: The Outbreak
(July 7th, 2017, Friday Morning)
"Knock knock."
Natsu quirked a brow as he unzipped his tent's door, finding Levy on the other side. "What's up?"
"Can I borrow your truck?" she asked, ignoring his disheveled appearance. His shirt and shorts were winkled, Natsu not caring since it was the last day of their camping trip. In a few hours they would be heading back to their regular lives.
"For?"
"Eggs."
Natsu cocked his head. "I thought we had some?"
"We did," Levy started, letting out a heavy sigh. "But someone left the lid off the cooler last night. The ice melted."
Natsu hummed. "The eggs aren't good?"
"They're warm." Levy moved out of the way as Natsu emerged from his tent, putting on a pair of shoes. "I would go to the little shop here, but they're out and I promised Erza I'd make scrambled eggs this morning. The eggs might still be good, but I'd rather not risk it and get everyone sick and—"
Natsu nodded his head, pulling out his keys. "I'll go with ya. I need more cigarettes anyways." He hadn't packed his carton, running out of smokes last night.
Upon seeing Levy's narrowed eyes, he laughed. "Don't go into lecture-mode. I'll quit when I'm ready." It was a lie, Natsu unsure if he would ever be ready to break the addiction. His muscles tightened at the thought of going all day without a cigarette.
He wasn't ready to quit, but thankfully he didn't have to today.
Levy shook her head before nodding towards the parking lot, the two passing Lyon and Gray on their way. They were packing up their tents, Natsu finding some of their bags in the bed of his truck when he reached his vehicle.
"Alright," Natsu said, hopping in before starting the engine. "Let's ride!"
Music blared from his radio on the drive to the gas station a few miles away, Natsu bobbing his head while Levy sang the lyrics. He frowned when the song cut out halfway through and a person started speaking. He switched the station before he could hear what they had to say, assuming it had to do with the weather or something.
Everything seemed normal, aside from the random abandoned vehicles on the side of the road. One or two was one thing, but he counted five. The number was odd enough, but the real weird part was some of the doors were wide open. If he got stranded on the side of the road and had to walk somewhere, he would at least close his doors.
Natsu tapped his thumb against the steering wheel, enjoying the short ride thanks to his medication. His phone vibrated after he reached the gas station, finding a text message from his dad telling him to be safe that morning.
Igneel: Some weird things are happening on the news. Be careful on your drive home.
Natsu smiled as he pocketed his phone, wondering when his dad became a worrywart. Without a care in the world, they entered the gas station, picking up a few snacks to go with his smokes.
He brought his selection to the register, frowning when he realized there was no one there to check him out. He looked around the store, finding it oddly quiet. There were only four people there, all customers. 'Strange.'
"Anyone wanna check me out?" Natsu asked, looking around for a bell. He eyed the pack of cigarettes he wanted behind the counter.
"Where's the cashier?" Levy asked when she came up, causing Natsu to shrug.
"I dunno."
Natsu tilted his head when he heard someone snickering, watching as a man left the store without paying. "Are you really gonna steal that?"
The guy flipped him off without looking back. Natsu's eye twitched, but he wasn't about to chase a thief, especially one just stealing a drink.
"The fuck are we supposed to do?" Natsu asked, setting his stuff on the counter before finding a door marked 'Employees Only'. He grabbed the knob but it was locked. He knocked, but no one answered.
Frustrated, Natsu pressed his ear against the door, scowling at the faint sounds he heard. Moaning, stuff falling to the ground, and something wet and squishy. He had heard enough people having sex to know what they were doing.
He marched to the register, pulling out his last few bills before tossing them over the counter. He grabbed his few snacks, grumbling when he realized he wouldn't get his cigarettes. "Let's go."
"But I didn't pay," Levy said, holding up her breakfast burrito as she followed Natsu out of the store.
"They're in there fucking. If ten's not enough then too bad."
Levy shook her head but didn't stop, climbing into Natsu's truck. He started the vehicle, surprised when multiple cars pulled into the parking lot. They watched with raised brows as people rushed into the store, one pushing another down so they could get in first.
"The hell is wrong with people today?" Natsu asked, reversing from his spot. He had to slam on his brakes when a car nearly ran into him, the vehicle not slowing as they reached the nearest pump. "Fucking assholes."
"Someone has a potty mouth," Levy laughed, earning a reluctant smile from him.
"Can't help it. I guess I'm not agreeing with people this morning."
He pulled out of the parking lot without further incidents. With the music cranked up and the road relatively clear, they headed back to the campsite.
"Mmmmmm," Levy moaned when they were halfway there, munching on her burrito. "This is literally the best thing I've ever eaten," she said, not bothering to close her mouth as she chewed.
'Has to be good then.'
Natsu chuckled, pretending to reach over to grab it out of her hands, but she reacted quickly.
"Nuh uh! This is mine!"
"What about sharing?" Natsu asked, grinning as he pulled to the side of the road, getting out of the way as an ambulance and cop car rushed past them. "You make it sound so good."
"It is," she said, squealing when he tried to grab it again. "No way! You should've gotten your own!"
"Meanie," Natsu laughed, accelerating when the emergency vehicles passed. He looked back, eyes widening when he saw a car parked over the yellow line, dividing the two lanes of the road.
'Weird.'
Natsu didn't bother thinking about it for long, taking off so they could get back to camp. He had almost forgotten about Levy's burrito until the scent hit his nose again, Natsu deciding he wanted to tease his friend one last time.
"I feel like I should get a cut of your food. I did drive you."
Levy scoffed before her eyes rounded. Natsu could only glance at her a few times, trying to keep his eyes on the road. "What?"
"I have an idea," she said, a devious smile forming on her face before she inhaled the burrito, leaving nothing behind.
"No fair!" Natsu shouted as Levy laughed. He ended up snickering, shaking his head. "I wish I got one too."
"Shoulda woulda coulda," she teased, Natsu tearing his eyes off the road to give her a pout. However, instead of seeing an amused look on Levy's face, she gasped before reaching towards his wheel.
"LOOK OUT!"
Natsu wasn't quick enough, feeling and hearing his truck clip something before he could see what it was. His tires screeched as he hit the brakes, panic swarming his system as his mind blanked.
He couldn't hear Levy as the truck swerved, Natsu having little control as it came to a stop. He looked at his friend, then turned his gaze to the rearview mirror.
Everything around him froze, heart sinking as he saw a body lying in the middle of the street, blood all around it.
"Oh my gosh," Levy whispered or screamed, he couldn't tell, Natsu ready to throw up when sensation hit his body.
"F-fuck! I didn't see him!"
Natsu scrambled with his seatbelt, falling from the truck as he tried regaining control of his limbs. He had watched videos on emergency aid, but he never thought he would have to use it until after he became a firefighter.
"G—I—Sh—" He couldn't think, couldn't form a word as he ran towards the body. He sucked in a breath as other people gathered, cars pulled off to the side of the road. Between the wild beat of his heart and the murmur of the crowd, Natsu couldn't understand what anyone said.
Luckily for him, someone else reacted, checking the person he hit's pulse before shouting for Natsu to help flip him over.
"— and chest compressions—"
"—one call nine—"
"—tried! The line's busy!"
Natsu watched in horror, seeing he hit a young man, probably his age if not a little older. His face was damaged from road rash, his arm easily dislocated if not broken.
"I didn't mean to," Natsu said, voice drowned out by the sound of a siren. 'Help's coming!'
He looked up, expecting to see an ambulance headed to their location, but it flew past them, almost hitting two people in the process.
"The hell?!" someone shouted, but just as quickly as those words registered, Natsu saw the ambulance veer off the road, crashing into a large tree with no indication of braking.
"—going on?!"
"—police won't answer!"
"—check to see if they're okay—
"I keep calling but—"
Natsu gasped, his lungs on fire from not breathing. He jerked when he felt something touch his shoulder, looking over to see Levy beside him. Tears clung to her eyes, her lower lip wobbling as she asked him something, but he couldn't hear her over the scream from the ground.
All eyes fell to the pedestrian who had been doing chest compressions. Blood spurted from his neck, a chunk of flesh caught between the teeth of the guy Natsu hit. Everyone backed up, Natsu stumbling as he screamed.
'I hit a psychopath!'
He had no time to dwell on that thought, more screams erupting as blood soaked the road. Natsu's eyes stayed on the man he thought he killed, watching as he took another bite from the poor guy's neck.
Someone tugged on his arm, but Natsu couldn't budge. His eyes fixed on the blood gushing out, but then it slowed into a dribble. Instead of the man falling, he twitched, both men separating themselves as inhuman growls rose in their throats.
A lot of things weren't right about what he witnessed, but even still, he felt it in the pit of his stomach. Something wasn't right, Natsu jolting when two sets of bloodshot eyes found him.
"GET UP!"
When had he fallen? Natsu looked up, realizing he was sitting on the ground. Levy continued pulling, Natsu only regaining control of his body when he heard a loud crash.
Two cars had collided, the window of one busted open while a woman laid over the hood. Despite a bone sticking out of her arm and a large chunk of glass embedded in her cheek, she tried reaching forward, clawing in front of her.
"—HAVE TO GO!"
Natsu scrambled to his feet just in time, narrowly missing a swipe from the guy he hit earlier. He yelped, turning to run with Levy back to the safety of his truck, but he couldn't keep his eyes off the guy for long.
Not only was he wondering what the heck happened back there, the guy was gaining on them. Natsu didn't have time to question how a guy who got hit with a moving vehicle was able to sprint.
'Drugs?'
Natsu clung to that idea as he jumped into his truck, Levy running around to the other side. He turned, gripping the handle before pulling with everything he had, body stunned when he felt something blocking the path.
Natsu had nothing to throw up, but he dry heaved when he saw blood on the bottom of his open door, hearing something between a hiss and groan from below. He chanced a peek, stomach jerking at the misshaped head looking back at him.
'I-I hit him again! But—' How the heck was he still alive? Still able to stand?
The hair on the back of Natsu's neck rose when the guy stood before him, one eyeball almost dislodged from the socket. Blood seeped from a cut on his forehead, the spot where he met Natsu's truck.
He would bet anything the guy had a similar cut on the back of his head from the door.
"CLOSE THE DOOR!" Levy shouted, Natsu jolting before reaching for the handle.
The guy lunged, grabbing Natsu's arm before leaning in. His mouth was open, blood dripping from his teeth. Natsu didn't think, just acted. He kicked as hard as he could, the guy letting go of his arm before stumbling to the ground.
Just as the guy made his way up, Natsu jerked the door towards him with all his might. It didn't close, catching on the guy's head again and again as Natsu tried shutting the door for good.
Only when the guy gave up the fight and fell to the ground for the last time was Natsu able to close the door, but by then his legs and the side of his seat were covered in blood. He gripped the handle so tight his hands had to be pried off by Levy, Natsu panting as he stared at his door.
The weapon he used to commit murder.
'Did I... really just... k-kill... s... someone?'
His thoughts didn't last long, both of them jumping when a person ran into the side of the truck, screaming for help until two other people rushed them, pulling them down to the ground before the screams stopped.
Natsu's head snapped to Levy, his mouth moving but he couldn't hear his voice, wasn't sure if he was even speaking. Levy shook her head, moving to turn the key in the ignition before the truck roared to life.
Natsu grit his teeth as he put the truck in drive, shaky hands gripping the steering wheel. The chaos didn't end when they drove away, more carnage surrounding them as they made their way back to the camping grounds.
Cars were wrecked, people running around. Some were being chased, some were doing the chasing. Blood stained the road, even when the pavement turned into gravel.
The camping grounds were just as bad, tents turned over and screams heard from every direction. Natsu couldn't focus on that, the safety of his friends his top priority.
"I dropped my phone back there," Levy said, gasping when someone tried attacking the truck, only to fall on the ground before running after something else. "Do you have yours?"
"Y-yeah," Natsu said, foot on the brake as he eased his way down the road that led to their campsite. "It's uh, h-here." He pulled it out, Levy taking it before the device lit up.
"Your dad's calling." She said no more, accepting the call before putting it on speaker. "Mr. Dragneel?"
"Who is this? Is Natsu there?"
"I'm here," he said, his voice sounding like a strangers in his ears.
"Thank goodness you're alive! Where are you?!"
"Still at the campgrounds," Levy said, Natsu jerking the wheel to avoid hitting a lady running with a child in her arms. "What's going on?!"
"I don't know. I can't get a hold of the authorities. The news doesn't know either. They're telling everyone to stay inside."
"Where are you?" Natsu asked, heart dropping when his father didn't answer the question.
"Doesn't matter. I'm heading to you. Don't leave. Just hunker down and I'll be there soon."
"I don't think that's a good idea, Mr. Dragneel. This place is overrun. The people are—"
"I don't think those are people anymore," Igneel said, a chill running down Natsu's spine.
He fought a growl of frustration. "If they're not people then what the hell are they?"
"I don't know, but they—" The line went dead, Natsu sucking in a sharp breath as he looked at Levy.
She was already hitting the call back button, Natsu cursing as he turned his eyes to the road. He reached the parking lot just as the call connected, Natsu's eyes frantically searching until he found Jellal's car.
A relieved sigh escaped him, but it was short-lived. He didn't hear his dad's voice as he witnessed a man shoving Gray towards another person, soaked in blood as they lunged at him. Erza pulled him away at the last second, swinging a frying pan at the rabid-looking person.
"Stay there," Igneel said, but Natsu shook his head. How could they stay when it wasn't safe?
He tried to ask, but the line went dead again. Natsu clenched his teeth as Levy hit that call back button again, but she was sent straight to voicemail.
"Keep trying him," Natsu ordered before leaving the truck, his legs almost giving out when he hit the ground.
Everything was surreal, the screams, the growls, the shouting. He pushed it from his mind as he raced towards his friends, finding bodies scattered on the ground. Some were torn to shreds, others were crawling along the grass, dripping blood behind them. If that wasn't enough to make him sick, Natsu's stomach twisted when he heard a yowl coming from his side.
"HAPPY!"
"He's safe!" Erza shouted, one arm around Cana as she led her towards the parking lot. "Grab him now! We need to go!"
Natsu nodded, sprinting to his tent before unzipping it. Happy's hair stood tall, his tail flickering from all the noise. "It's okay," Natsu said, but the shakiness in his voice had Happy growling.
"Sorry buddy." He couldn't afford to be patient, even knowing Happy was in distress. He grabbed a damp towel, throwing it over Happy before grabbing him.
Happy fought, hissing and spitting even after Natsu got him in the cat carrier. He grabbed the bag he packed the night before, leaving everything else before exiting the tent.
Natsu couldn't hear Happy's growls over the sounds outside, eyes widening when he saw a car being destroyed from the outside, three 'people' trying to reach a person inside. There was no time to waste, no chance of staying at that place.
He loaded Happy in the truck, hopping in the driver's seat before throwing it in reverse. Erza, Jellal, and Cana were in the other car, Levy, Gray, and Lyon in his truck. Natsu didn't talk, didn't think as he peeled out of the parking lot, Erza hot on his trail.
Where were they going? He wasn't sure, but sitting around waiting to be picked off wasn't an option.
"Okay, good idea," Levy said, Natsu stealing a glance at her before focusing on the road. "Natsu, Jellal said head towards Cana's house."
"What about mom?!" Lyon asked, tone frantic.
"Ultear says mom's feeling sick, but they're both okay, but—"
Natsu couldn't hear anything that he said after that, swerving to avoid an oncoming car. He couldn't afford to get distracted. He had to focus on getting back to the main part of Magnolia as quickly as possible, speeding down the highway and dodging the car wrecks along the way.
There were more crazed people on the roads, running after the truck as it passed before giving up. They were fast, but they were no match for his vehicle.
Natsu's speeding cut the trip down to record time, tires squealing as he stopped outside of Cana's house. He didn't think about it, getting out of the truck as he headed to the front door.
Cana fumbled with her keys, getting the lock on the fourth try before they barreled through the house, screaming for her dad. Natsu found Gildarts in the home gym located in their basement, sweat clinging to his skin. Music blared from the stereo, drowning out the sound of sirens outside.
He was unscrewing his water bottle, a pill in his hand when Natsu burst through the door. "What the—"
"We have to go!" Natsu skipped over steps as he ran down the stairs. He grabbed Gildarts' arm, tugging as hard as he could, but the brute of a man didn't budge.
"Chill out, Natsu," he laughed, easily shaking him off. "What's going on? Looking for a fight?"
Natsu was at a loss for words, watching as Gildarts moved the pill between two fingers, ready to take it. "Give me two seconds? I gotta take this every day at the same time or it won't work."
Natsu opened his mouth, needing to tell Gildarts to forget about the stupid pill, but thankfully someone else stressed the urgency.
"DAD!" Cana yelled, panting as she stumbled down the stairs.
Gildarts mood changed in an instant, brows knitting together as he went to inspect his daughter. She was hobbling, Natsu now realizing she hurt her ankle. It was swollen, but she didn't let it stop her.
"What happened?!"
"We have to go," she urged, wrapping her arm around his before jerking him towards the door. "NOW!"
"Cana, wait one minute." Gildarts shook his head, missing the gravity of the situation. "You need to sit down. Natsu, can you get an ice pack from upstairs? It's in—"
"WE HAVE NO TIME!" Cana yelled, trying to pull him.
Gildarts narrowed his eyes before looking at Natsu. "What's going on?"
"People are attacking outside," he said, unsure if that was an accurate depiction of what happened.
It was more like a slaughter.
"I don't—"
Gildarts' voice faltered when Natsu pushed the power button to his stereo, allowing the sound of sirens and screams from outside to be heard. They were faint, but it was enough to let Gildarts know they weren't messing around.
His eyes widened as his arms fell to his sides, the pill and water crashing on the ground. Cana took advantage of his confusion, ushering him out of the basement with Natsu's help.
Their next stop was Natsu's apartment since it was closest. A few times someone would suggest splitting up to search faster, but it was shut down every time. They couldn't risk getting separated, so they stayed as a group.
"Fuck!" Natsu looked through every room of his apartment, but Igneel was nowhere to be found. He wanted to stay, to wait it out, but he couldn't delay.
"Damn it!" He grabbed a marker, writing on the kitchen table for Igneel to call him. He added his number just in case, worried something happened to Igneel's phone.
'Or worse. Him.'
Natsu couldn't think like that, clenching his teeth as he ran down the stairs. He narrowly missed getting bitten by some crazy fuck on the way down, but despite them being quick, Natsu was quicker. He twisted his body out of the way before giving the person a kick to the stomach, sending them flying down the steps while Natsu made a fast getaway.
The next stop was Levy's, but she didn't have to step one foot out of the truck. Her parents' bodies were strung along the front lawn, a group of 'people' pulling out parts from their insides to stuff into their mouths.
A word popped into Natsu's head, but he pushed it down. There was no way that was possible.
With gritted teeth Natsu raced to Gray's house. He stayed in the truck while Gray and Lyon rushed inside to get their mom and sister. Natsu tried calling Igneel again, hands shaky as he tapped at his phone. He had no luck, Igneel's phone going straight to voicemail every time.
He didn't know what to think, looking to Levy for guidance, but her eyes told him she had checked out. He couldn't blame her. She had just seen her parents— How could he even describe what was happening to them?
They were being eaten, something he still had a hard time comprehending even after witnessing it with his own eyes.
'Zom— No, that's not what's happening. That's... that's fucking insane.'
He didn't think it was possible they were facing the living dead, but what else could he call what they were seeing?
'A dream!' Natsu's eyes widened as a sense of relief fell over him. 'That's what it is! It's just a fucking nightmare.' He closed his eyes, trying to will himself awake. There were several times he had realized he was dreaming and woken up, but why wasn't it working now?
He jumped when something slammed against the side of his truck, Natsu gasping when he saw a bloody hand staining his window. It wasn't there long, the person falling to the ground.
Natsu reached for the door, ready to open it and see if they needed help, but Levy stopped him at the last minute. He thought she had zoned out, but she must have startled too.
It was a move that saved his life. No sooner had she grabbed his arm was the person on their feet again, their eyes bloodshot as they started clawing at the window to get in.
Natsu opened his mouth, but he had no words. He struggled to get a grip with reality, part of him still thinking he was stuck in the worst nightmare of his life.
Pinching his arm proved nothing. He couldn't register the pain when all his other senses were on high-alert.
Or maybe it was adrenaline? He couldn't be sure.
The crazed person at his door didn't stick around, finding a new target. It chased after a passing car, hobbling on what looked to be a broken leg.
Natsu's eyes were trained on it until he heard a door opening, his head snapping just in time to see Gray pushing Lyon inside.
"She killed her?!"
"Shut the fuck up!" Gray yelled, jumping in afterwards before looking back. He offered Ultear a hand, Natsu looking behind to see no one else there.
'Where's Ur?'
"She fucking killed her," Lyon said, or screamed. Natsu wasn't sure, his ears ringing when he noted the blood soaked in Ultear's shirt.
They didn't give Natsu a chance to process what might have happened, Levy gripping his shoulder before turning him towards the steering wheel.
"Drive!"
He hesitated, mind failing to function. Natsu tried finding his breath, only moving when he caught sight of Jellal's car in front of them. He didn't know what the hell was going on or if he was even in the real world, but he knew one thing.
He couldn't get separated from his friends.
Natsu was on auto-pilot as he threw the truck into drive and sped after their car, the next two stops just as depressing as the others.
Erza's parents were dead.
Jellal's dad wasn't dead, but he definitely wasn't alive either.
Despite his guts hanging from his exposed stomach, Jellal's dad approached his son. There was no screaming, no pained sounds coming from the man. It was just a raspy hiss as he tried grabbing Jellal.
Natsu ended up getting out of the truck for that one, helping Jellal restrain his father with a blanket before putting him back in the house. His hands ended up covered in warm and sticky blood. Wiping them on his jeans did no good, so he pushed forward, even when he had no idea what was happening.
They kept driving around, avoiding crashes and mobs of rabid people. Eventually they crossed paths with Laxus near a library. He had never known him personally, but everyone knew of him after his father was put on trial for murdering young women.
Despite the blood and dirt on his clothes and face, Laxus was a welcomed sight amongst all the chaos.
"GET TO MAGNOLIA HIGH!"
Before Natsu could ask why, Laxus was firing his weapon at a group of those... 'people'. They dropped quickly when shot in the head, but the ones who took hits in their body kept moving forward. The only one who ended up falling without a shot to the head had a hole in their chest by the time Laxus got done firing at them, their heart destroyed from the gunfire.
Natsu didn't stick around to watch more. He hit the gas and sped towards his old high school, his pulse throbbing in his throat as knots twisted his stomach. He kept waiting for his nightmare to end, for him to wake up in his tent so he could shiver and say, "That was fucked up."
He didn't wake, Natsu slowly realizing he was stuck in reality, even if everything felt fuzzy around the edges.
The school was packed when they arrived, people directing them to sit in the gym or cafeteria while those with guns and weapons stayed out front, defending the masses.
Natsu tried calling his dad again when they were settled against a wall in the big gym. He barely heard Igneel's voicemail over the roaring sound around them. He resisted throwing his phone out of frustration and confusion, wondering why his dad wasn't picking up.
"What the fuck is going on?"
That question wouldn't get answered for several days, everyone asking the same thing.
He looked around, scanning the blood, dirt, bruises, and defeat covering his friends. He swallowed, heart heavy as he tightened his fist. He was just as lost as the others, but he made a promise in that moment.
'I don't know what the fuck is going on, but nothing is happening to us.'
He would protect his friends, even if it cost him his life.

.
I didn't die from skydiving! It did wear me out tho. Like, I was too tired to do anything else for the rest of the day. XD
So, I've been wanting to do this chapter for a while and figured now was a good place since we're about to start a new arc of the story. Let me know what you thought! There have been hints about what happened but now you get more of the story. :P I don't know how I would handle a situation like that. I need to start working out again so I can at least run a bit in case I need to escape a situation like that. (Also, health and what not)
Anyone else realize when they're dreaming and purposely wake themselves up? That happens to me maybe twice a year where I'm like, "Fuck no" and force myself awake, lol. Poor Natsu is outta luck on that solution.
Also, anyone else pick up what was happening at the gas station? It definitely wasn't sex he was hearing. More like a zombie getting its grub on.
On a personal note, life has gotten a little hectic lately. I don't wanna get into the details, just wanted to say while I haven't been writing lately, I've been thinking about my stories throughout the days! I'm still reediting this story and thinking about its future, and I wanna say again how thankful I am that you're so patient with me! It means a lot!
