Chapter Seventy-Nine: Blessing

(May 31st, 2018, Thursday Afternoon)

"I came to see you. Can we talk?"

"Why?"

Natsu watched as Hibiki's eyes flitted to both ends of the halls before sighing. "Can I come in first?"

'Hell no,' Natsu thought, gripping his handle tighter. He was starting to lose feeling in his fingers, but it felt better than the thrumming in his chest. 'What the fuck does he want with me?'

When Natsu didn't respond, merely standing his ground, Hibiki's shoulders fell. "It's about Lucy, okay?"

That shouldn't have surprised him. She was their only common ground besides being runners. Still, Natsu's stomach flipped at the mention of her name. "What about her?"

Hibiki took another look around, his stalling starting to piss Natsu off. Of course, all the stuff that happened over the last day didn't help, but it was easy placing his blame with Hibiki.

"It's probably better if we talk in private."

Natsu's eye twitched. "I'm not letting you in," he said, the frustration in his tone surprising him. He thought he could hide his disinterest for Hibiki better than that, but after the rough two days with no sleep, he wasn't able to play nice.

He tolerated his presence for Lucy's sake, but that didn't mean he wanted to chat with the guy.

After a sigh and tip of his head upwards, Natsu said, "Look, I'm in a shitty mood and I wanna go lay down. Just say whatever you're gonna say."

"I'll just come back another time," Hibiki said, attempting to take a step away.

Natsu's nose scrunched, deciding waiting would be ten times worse than having to talk to him now.

Natsu pushed his door wide open, stifling a groan as he gestured for Hibiki to enter. The man looked reluctant before complying, Hibiki taking up the space between the desk and white board while Natsu stayed behind to shut the door.

"I'll try to make this quick," Hibiki said, earning a nod from Natsu. "Do you like Lucy?"

Natsu's jaw dropped as his brows furrowed, not needing to ask in what sense Hibiki meant. It was obvious they were close friends, which meant he was implying a romantic interest.

Natsu shook his head instantly, his stomach churning as he denied it. "No, n-not like that," he forced out, swearing something was clawing from the inside of his belly. 'I'm just hungry,' he told himself, but the excuses felt more flimsy every time he heard them.

It had been getting increasingly harder to ignore the truth, but Natsu wasn't willing to fold yet. 'Whatever this is, it'll pass. It'll pass. It... it fucking has to.'

"Are you sure?" Hibiki asked, the flicker of hope in his eyes aggravating Natsu.

'Why the fuck does he look so happy?' It brought up violent urges in Natsu, but he remained calm. "Positive," he muttered, the word feeling hollow.

Hibiki nodded, relief washing over his features. He stopped fidgeting with his hands, resting them by his sides. "Okay, good." Hibiki straightened his shoulders, his voice holding more confidence than before. "I wanted to make sure I wasn't stepping on any toes."

There was one other time in his life when someone came to him and asked if he liked a friend. That had been Jellal, gathering Natsu and Gray to ask if they were interested in Erza before he made his move. He refused to believe the same was happening now. It was obvious Lucy wasn't ready to be in a relationship. Anyone could see that, so Hibiki was probably just asking out of curiosity.

'That's it. Nothing more.'

Natsu started turning towards the door, sensing the conversation was drawing to a close. He welcomed it, the bitterness in his chest growing the longer that flirt was in his room. It made it worse when Happy trotted over, rubbing Hibiki's ankle with his body.

'Traitor.'

Natsu looked away just in time for Hibiki to add, "I wouldn't feel like much of a man if I stood in the way of you two, but since you don't have feelings for her, I'm free to ask her out."

Natsu froze, hand halfway towards the handle. It dropped just as he looked over his shoulder. He must have heard him wrong. "What?"

"I'm going to ask Lucy out on a date," Hibiki said, flashing Natsu a cocky smile.

He had a hard time hiding his emotions, fighting the urge to growl while he controlled his face. "Oh yeah?" Natsu asked, trying to pump some humor into his voice, but it fell flat. "Not exactly a place to go on a date around here."

Natsu wasn't sure if Hibiki picked up on his displeasure, the man having the audacity to blush as he hooked his thumbs in his pockets. "True. It's not like I can take her to 8-Island or something, but I figured I could ask her to watch the play with me for starters."

Natsu wanted to shake his head for several reasons. Not only did it bother him that Hibiki was relaxing and acting casual, Lucy was going to sit with his group of friends. The feeling of being replaced came back in full-force, imagining seeing Lucy less and less until finally she didn't see their group except on occasion.

It had him clenching his fist by his side, his body still turned so Hibiki couldn't see his distress.

"I think she's sitting with us," Natsu said in a tight voice.

Hibiki nodded, giving a nonchalant shrug. "They're going to do the play for a few nights. I'm sure she'll want to go again." He leaned against the white board where nothing was written. "Besides, that's just an idea. I don't really care what we're doing, as long as I can do it with her."

Natsu clenched his teeth, eyes narrowing as a growl rumbled in his chest. He doubted Hibiki heard it over his own laughter, quickly shaking his head.

"That came out wrong. I plan on taking my time with her, obviously."

Natsu wanted to slap that charismatic smile off Hibiki's face, but he remained in his spot.

"I'll go at her pace."

Natsu had to close his eyes. The more he saw Hibiki, the angrier he became. 'Why the hell is he talking like he already has her? Does this bastard really think he stands a chance with a girl like her?! She deserves way better! Sure he's not bad looking... And I guess he's smart... And likes reading, and Lucy likes spending time with him... But...'

"You okay man?" Hibiki asked, snapping Natsu from his spiraling thoughts.

"Fine," he muttered, but his shaking head said otherwise. Natsu recalled the rumors around base he heard, about how Hibiki was either with a random girl or with Karen. He wasn't sure what kind of relationship he had with Karen, but from what he heard about her too, they weren't exclusive or healthy.

'Lucy shouldn't be with him.' Natsu's heart sank thinking about the pain she might endure if they got together. "Just use her like those other girls."

"I won't," Hibiki said, causing Natsu to jolt. "I promise, I don't see Lucy as some conquest. I really like her."

Natsu's heart pounded in his chest, realizing he had voiced his thoughts. 'Might as well put them all out there.'

"I don't think you should ask her out," Natsu said, surprised by how calm he sounded despite his blood roaring in his ears. He wanted nothing more than to grab Hibiki by the back of the collar and toss him out, but that would mean he was able to go see Lucy sooner. He had to convince Hibiki to change his mind, even if just thinking that had his stomach souring.

'Is... that fair to Lucy?'

"Why not?"

"..." Natsu failed to come up with a single reason, still stuck on his previous thought. He didn't think Hibiki was a good match for Lucy, but... he learned months ago he didn't have the right to take her choice away. 'She could easily say no to him,' he told himself, only to frown. 'But what are the chances?'

He looked over Hibiki again, easily noting the similarities between him and Loke. That was Natsu's only example of the kind of guy she went for, and if Loke had been her type, Hibiki would be too.

Handsome, smart, cocky.

'Fuck.'

Natsu sucked in a sharp breath, anger sparking within his chest. It wasn't directed outwards, Natsu pissed at himself for the onslaught of confusing thoughts. Ever since he got back from Hargeon he hadn't felt the same, and every day that passed he felt more at odds with himself.

'I need to talk to Levy. Maybe she'll be able to sort some of this crap out.'

"Natsu?"

His head snapped to Hibiki's, unaware that his gaze had veered off. "What?" he asked, wanting to facepalm a second later when he recalled what he said. He didn't get a chance to say never mind, Hibiki repeating his words back to him.

"You said you don't think I should ask her out. Why?"

"Just—" Natsu felt the air grow thin, his lungs working harder to pull in air. "She's—"

Natsu released what little breath he had before raking his fingers through his hair, the room feeling tilted. He tried placing the reason behind his words, torn in what possessed him to say that. Was he truly concerned for Lucy? Or was he being selfish because he didn't want Hibiki to be with her.

'Both.'

The realization had his head spinning, Natsu keeping himself from stumbling by focusing on Hibiki and widening his stance. He failed to clear his mind, but he did manage to pull a decent excuse from his scattered thoughts.

"I don't think she's ready for something like that."

Hibiki didn't hesitate, voice soft and full of concern as he asked, "Because of what she's been through?"

"She told you?" The words rushed out of Natsu as his eyes widened, his own scars tingling at the thought of what happened at the lake house.

Hibiki's head tilted slightly. "Does that bother you? Knowing she told me?"

Natsu's head and shoulders fell, trying to remind himself that was a good thing. If Lucy was able to share her trauma with others, not only would it relieve the stress of Natsu carrying it by himself, but it also meant she was growing stronger as a person.

He tried, but he couldn't deny the truth. That incessant pressure against his chest reminded him of how much further he needed to go to be better. It did bother him that she shared her past with Hibiki, but he wasn't about to admit that.

"No," he said, doing his best to sound convincing.

He felt Hibiki's eyes on him, but he refused to look up. "Sure," he said, his tone letting Natsu know he failed yet again. "Well, to answer your question, she hasn't told me anything."

Glancing up, Natsu asked, "Really?"

Hibiki's eyes narrowed for a second before returning to normal. "Really. She hasn't said, and I haven't asked. If she wants to share, I'll listen, but I like the person she is now."

The conviction in Hibiki's voice made Natsu sick. It would be easy if the guy was acting like a slimeball. Then he could feel justified in disliking him. Instead, it seemed Hibiki genuinely cared about Lucy. It shouldn't have gotten under his skin, but it did.

"I want to be with her regardless of what happened in her past."

"Why?" Natsu asked, releasing his breath as he looked up. He felt defeated, his body heavier despite the panicked beat of his heart.

"Because what happened before—"

Natsu shook his head, causing it to throb at his temples. He released a short breath, struggling to speak. "I don't mean..." Natsu's nose scrunched as he failed to get the words out, but Hibiki caught on.

"Why do I want to be with her? Isn't it obvious?" Hibiki asked, blowing out a breath. "She's amazing. She gets me, and every time we're together it feels like this world isn't as shitty as I thought."

Natsu's teeth clench, relating to Hibiki's words more than he should.

"And I think I can make her happy."

Emerald eyes dipped to the floor again, wishing he knew what to do. It wasn't his place to make choices for anyone else, but he couldn't stop the burning desire to put an end to it. 'Hibiki doesn't know what he's talking about. He's just going to hurt her.'

That thought had Natsu inhaling a shaky breath. 'Or... maybe they'll be a good match, and I'm an asshole for trying to stop that.'

"Do you not believe me?" Hibiki asked before shaking his head. "Never mind, don't answer that." He tried walking past Natsu, but there wasn't much space between him and the door.

Natsu lifted his head when Hibiki stood in front of him, his thoughts torn in half. Why was it so difficult? People got together all the time. Well, not so much recently with the world ending, but it was common to want that companionship. Just...

'Does he have to want Lucy?'

"I didn't come here to ask for your blessing," Hibiki said, his voice solid. "I came here because I know you and Lucy are close. If there was a chance something might've happened between you two, I didn't want to stand in the way. I know..."

Hibiki narrowed his eyes, pain reflecting in their dark depths as his voice splintered. "I-I know she cares about you deeply. Trust me, I've been patient. I've waited for you to make your move, but let's be honest. You've been back for a while and haven't done anything."

When Natsu furrowed his brows, Hibiki added, "I asked Lucy, and she says you two are just friends, and while I want to believe that, I also hear the way she talks about you."

'What does she say?' Natsu's body didn't cooperate, his lips pressed into a tight line as his heartbeat hammered out of control. He wanted to break whatever curse had taken over him, rendering him powerless.

More importantly, why couldn't Hibiki shut the fuck up. Nothing made sense anymore, and the more he spoke, the worse his head felt. 'Why does it matter so much if Hibiki likes Lucy. I've never wanted to block someone from dating my friends before.' Even when Jet and Droy tried their miserable attempts at flirting with Levy, he stood back because it wasn't his business.

So why did it change with Lucy?

Why did everything change when it came to Lucy?

'Is it because—'

"Natsu?"

"Could you give me a fucking moment to think?!" he snapped back, both of them jolting out of shock. "Sorry!" he blurted out, teeth gnashing as he dragged his hand over his face. "Just—"

"Don't you think you've had more than enough time to deal with this? You can't keep stringing Lucy along forever."

"I'm not doing that," Natsu nearly growled, hand dropping as he glared at Hibiki. "We're just—"

'Friends. Just friends. Say it. Now! Why can't I say it?!'

Natsu's throat locked up, his fists shaking by his side before he turned around. Avoiding his problems hadn't helped before, but he wasn't sure he learned enough from Levy to fix the mess in his head.

He found it difficult to breathe, difficult to think. Natsu pressed his palm against the cool wall, counting to four in his head until his inhales and exhales matched the pace.

Natsu fought to find his last thought, but there was no celebration when it popped up. 'Is it because of Lucy's past that I want to block this? She was abused in so many ways. Could Hibiki manage her trauma? How would she react when he wanted to do stuff with her?'

He heard stories about Hibiki's reputation with women. Natsu wasn't sure it was completely true, but he had overheard Hibiki flirting while around base.

Natsu bit his inner cheek when another thought crossed his mind, his anger spiking. 'Does he flirt with Lucy off base?'

There would be no excuse for that type of distraction, but what troubled Natsu more than the possible danger was the fact that the flirting pissed him off the most, regardless of where it took place.

'Do... I...'

Natsu squeezed his eyes shut, shaking his head. 'No, I don't. I don't like Lucy like that. She's just my friend... Sure, she's attractive, and I think about doing stuff with her, and we have fun together, and she makes me feel safe... I want her to move back in, but even that's not enough. I wanna spend all my fucking time with her. And I just want to grab her hand and pull her close and—'

His eyes widened as his heart gave a violent thump.

'Oh no. I...'

Natsu's fingers flexed against the wall as the last bit of his resistance crumbled. There was no rejoicing, no relief found from finally admitting what had been developing for months, maybe even longer.

Numbness spread through his limbs, Natsu welcoming it. His mind took longer to calm, his thoughts tangled so deeply they eventually created a white noise. For a moment, everything was peaceful.

But then he was ripped away, his sanity cracking when he was turned around, forced to look at Hibiki.

"Do you see yourself wanting a romantic relationship with Lucy?" Hibiki asked.

Natsu opened his mouth, but a lump formed in his throat before he could make a sound. It didn't matter, he had nothing to say.

Did he like Lucy?

Unfortunately, he realized he did harbor feelings for her. He had never liked another person before in that sense, but it was impossible to ignore now.

But, did he want to do something about his newfound feelings?

"No," he choked out, earning a raised brow from Hibiki.

"Yeah, I don't believe you," he said, taking a step back. Natsu sucked in a sharp breath, but it was quickly lost when Hibiki added, "But I feel better about my decision now."

He moved around Natsu, not caring about the limited space as he gripped the door handle. "Whatever happens, just remember. I gave you a chance to speak up."

Natsu grit his teeth, but he couldn't respond. He didn't bother turning around either, finding it easier if he didn't have to face Hibiki.

"Lucy's an incredible person. Whether you like her or not, she deserves someone who isn't scared to tell her how they feel. She's the only silver lining in this whole apocalypse. I'm thankful I had the chance to meet her and be her friend, and now I'm going to tell her how I feel."

Natsu jerked when he heard the door opening, his hand clenching into a tight fist. He turned, but Hibiki's voice had him pausing halfway.

"I'm not looking to pick a fight with you Natsu. I've been patient. Hell, Lucy's been patient, but we can't wait around forever. I'm going to go put my heart on the line for her. Hope you find a way to deal with that."

Hibiki left without another word, leaving Natsu to stare at the closed door for what felt like ages. He didn't want to move, afraid even a deeper breath would cause him to break.

He was right.

The second Natsu swallowed, everything crashed around him. He hit the floor so fast he didn't register the pain in his knees, Natsu gripping at his hair before tugging it hard. He growled, trying but failing to release the frustration boiling over in his chest.

"FUCK!"

Natsu's forehead hit the tile floor, teeth gritting and fingers still tugging at his hair. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't catch his breath, the room spinning as he replayed Hibiki's words again and again, wishing they would leave his head.

They were burned into his brain, haunting him until he curled in on himself.

'This isn't me. I don't get emotional like this. I don't lay on the ground fucking crying.'

That was partially true. He hadn't shed a tear, instead his turmoil wreaked havoc on his stomach. He wanted to rush to a toilet and get rid of the ill feelings swirling inside him, but he knew that wouldn't fix his problem.

'Is... it a problem?'

Natsu swallowed thickly, exhaling through gritted teeth. 'Other people get together and they're fine... So, why can't I—' He tried shaking his head before almost tipping forward, Natsu catching himself on a hand before moving into a sitting position.

His head rolled from the motion, Natsu swearing he was on a train. 'Fuck that. Feels like I got hit with one.'

Happy rubbed at his arm, but he couldn't risk lifting it to pet him. Natsu was unstable, physically and emotionally. He stared at that stupid door again, catching himself wishing a certain someone would come right in. 'Bad idea,' he thought, his frown feeling like it was going to be a permanent fixture on his face. With as messed up as his stomach felt, he doubted he would ever be happy again.

'No... it's not... it's not so bad.'

Natsu glanced at Happy, the feline purring away despite not being pet. "If... if other people a-are happy... Maybe I—"

His mouth shut, any ounce of hope he might have had vanished at the reality. He could look at all the other happy couples in the world but it wouldn't make a difference. His fear was too strong. Ingrained in his very being.

It was like telling someone who was scared of flying that not many planes crashed a year.

The fact was heartbreak was a very real possibility when it came to his feelings for Lucy. He hadn't even done anything and his feelings were already tearing him up inside.

If romance was so great, why did it feel like a hot stake was driven through his heart?

Natsu moved to stand on shaky legs, weight pressing against his chest as he took a step towards the door. He reached, hand hovering by the handle. It wouldn't take much effort to open the door, but Natsu couldn't do it. He couldn't even grab the damn thing.

He set his gaze on the door, his mind screaming for him to run after Hibiki, to tell him to back the hell off and leave Lucy alone, but he couldn't. The alternative was to get to Lucy first, but how shitty of a person would he be if he did that.

What was he supposed to do? Find Lucy and tell her he had feelings for her, but nothing could happen between them because he didn't want to take the risk. If what Hibiki implied was true, then Lucy felt something similar towards him.

Part of him didn't believe it, but if he replayed the last few weeks in his head, some of Lucy's actions started making sense. He thought she had been extra friendly and a little weird lately, but maybe that was her flirting with him? If she did like him, then confessing only to withhold the possibility of 'more' was cruel.

Wouldn't it be more merciful to pretend he never felt that way about her?

He had never strung someone along, but he was starting to think Hibiki was right. It wasn't intentional. He would never purposely hurt Lucy, but even if it happened by accident, he still blamed himself.

'I blurred those lines too,' he thought, recalling holding Lucy's hand and all those casual touches to her back and shoulder. Hell, he even grabbed her a few times and threw her over his shoulder when they were living together and she refused to go to sleep.

'We shared a fucking bed together,' he recalled, cuddling even when the weather had warmed. 'Fuck. I really did lead her on.'

What made matters worse was he couldn't tell Hibiki to back off. He wasn't willing to tell Lucy how he felt, which was his decision. Natsu knew he didn't owe anyone an explanation for his feelings as long as he didn't act on them, but if he tried blocking Lucy's chance to be happy with someone else, then he would purposely be stringing her along.

'I... I can't do that.'

If Hibiki had been bad, Natsu could justify it, but there was nothing to suggest that. Aside from being a flirt, Hibiki wasn't a bad guy. He never heard of him hurting anyone on base, even by saying an unkind thing. There was no reason to keep them apart.

Based on Lucy's past preferences—

'They might even be a good match...'

He wished he could say he was glad Lucy might find happiness with Hibiki, but it cut like a knife, stabbing into his chest. That knife twisted the longer he thought about Hibiki with Lucy.

'I bet they'll have... lots of fun together.'

Natsu swallowed thickly, recalling things he wanted to have with Lucy. The two of them cuddled up on a couch with a roaring fire keeping them warm. Happy curled up beside him as he propped his phone on his knee, the two of them watching a movie they had seen dozens of times, but it wouldn't bother them, because they had each other.

Only now did he realize that would have been intimate. There was nothing wrong with friends cuddling, but he wanted her in more ways than that.

So much more, but—

'But it's not fair to her.'

He wanted the benefits of a relationship without taking the risks, and that was selfish. Realizing that didn't make it any easier to stay, to know any minute Hibiki could make his move and get the woman he wanted.

Even if Natsu was willing to take that risk, what could he really offer her that he hadn't given already? He wasn't dumb, but he couldn't hold intellectual conversations full of theories and insight on books. He wasn't ugly, but he didn't have that pretty boy look Hibiki and Loke possessed. He was rough around the edges, figuratively and literally. His fingers were covered in calluses, his skin decorated with scars.

He wasn't sure how Hibiki managed to keep his softer appearance considering his job, but somehow his hands didn't look as beat up as the rest of the runners.

'It doesn't matter what he does... I'm the problem here.'

Natsu couldn't even summon the courage to attempt to flirt, let alone sweep a girl off their feet with the charisma Hibiki and Loke held.

They were cut from different cloth. Sure, they all lived the same now, but he saw the way Loke and Hibiki carried themselves, how they spoke. They were better matches for Lucy. They could challenge her and help her grow far better than he ever could.

'I'd only hold her back,' he thought, an illness swarming his stomach. 'I'm... I don't deserve her like that.'

His heart and hand fell as he accepted defeat, fear controlling him. He would never be willing to risk that much pain, knowing it was only a matter of time before one of them died. He wanted to be optimistic, but the grim reality was they couldn't live a long and happy life, not with the virus knocking at their doors.

So, in whatever time they had left, Natsu was going to have to live with his decision and find a way to be happy for Lucy, even if she chose to be with Hibiki. He couldn't expect her to forgo the chance at happiness because he was jealous and scared.

Being by himself wasn't so bad. It was fine. Okay, even. He was good with being on his own before, so he could continue that way. Understanding his feelings made them stronger somehow, but maybe it was just the shock of it all.

Maybe he could learn to control the feelings he had for Lucy. Learn to live with it.

It would be strange around her at first, trying to navigate the new territory, but it was better if he kept his feelings to himself.

He wasn't willing to risk his friendship or his heart, and he couldn't string her along by trying to dictate who she shouldn't be with. He forfeited any chance he had of being with her by staying silent.

Hibiki was right. Lucy deserved someone who wasn't afraid to tell her how they felt.

Natsu's skin turned icy as he closed his watery eyes. Regret clawed at his chest, but it soon blended with the onslaught of emotions raging within him. He made his decision.

Now he had to live with it.

So, I bet there's a lot of different opinions on this chapter. I'll give my thought process on it, but please share your own thoughts! I love tattoos and piercings. I think they're both a great way to express yourself and have fun with your appearance. Tattoos are (in my opinion) easier to heal. You keep it clean and moisturized for a few weeks and then you're golden. Just have to slap on some sunscreen when you expose it to the sun after that.

Piercings on the other hand, I find difficult to heal. In my life I've had 6 piercings (7 if you count shoving a safety pin through my lip in high school). I currently only have 2, my ears. At one point I got my nipples and industrial done. I cleaned those fuckers every day, twice a day, for about four months each, but then I started to get lazy with it and washed them maybe once every other day. They didn't heal and my industrial got bumps on the site (they've since gone away). I took those piercings out and decided that since I wasn't willing to see it through and keep maintaining them, I didn't deserve to have piercings.

Natsu's not ready for a relationship. In my opinion, as he is currently, he doesn't deserve to be with Lucy in a romantic sense because he's unwilling to even face his feelings for her. Even at the point of admitting it to himself, he's still refusing to deal with it. Unfortunately for Natsu, he sees liking Lucy as a negative thing because he thinks it's only going to lead to pain. He will see that some things/people are worth risking that all for, but he's just not there yet. As for Hibiki... Well, he's definitely taking a risk. I'll leave it at that for now.

Up next, Chapter Eighty: The show must go on

Oh! And I posted the first chapter of a short holiday fic about Thanksgiving. It's nalu, probably going to be 3-5 chapters, and called 'Thankful', if you wanna check it out. :P
