Chapter 13

On The Edge

Fonaar snaps and growls at the spiders as their circle surrounding him and the others got ever smaller with each step the arachnids took. And as if his actions were daring one of them to make a move against him, one of the large arachnid rose to the challenge and leaps at him only to be immediately gutted upon Fonaar's tail impaling him in mid-air, it's inner fluids splashing all over the draconian lizard's face. Fonaar tosses the corpse aside into the mass of encroaching spiders and almost immediately it was set upon by its former comrades, being reduced to a puddle of goo in mere seconds. Then one of the spiders, guts of his kin still dripping from his fangs, turns to face Wendy and readies itself to pounce.

Wendy spots the beast preparing to attack and takes a deep breath in response.

"Sky Dragon's Roar!", she castes as a rush of swirling air escapes from her mouth and unleashes itself on the spider as well as those behind it. A gap is instantly formed within the ranks of the horde as every spider in the path of the spell was flung off the ground, high into the air and toward the forest, the sounds of their bodies breaking onto the forest floor being heard throughout the area. Fonaar's keen eyesight spots a few of the remaining spiders breaking off in that direction, though whether it was for them to retreat or leaving in hopes of getting a quick meal, he could not tell.

Sensing the dragon's preoccupation in another direction, a second spider dashes him from behind hoping to catch him off-guard. Fonaar hears the muffled footsteps rapidly coming up behind him and turns to face his opponent, only to see four arrows flying past him, striking the arachnid in the entire right side of it's set of eyes. It lets out a shrill of pain as it reels back and barely has time to face the general direction from which the arrows came before two more arrows hit their mark on its two lower left eyes. This causes the monster to give a final death shriek before collapsing to the ground in a heap, its legs curling up. Just like its brethren a few moments before, it was set upon by the surrounding members of its species.

It was during this brief gory feast that Fonaar briefly flashes his eyes over to where the arrows appear from and spot Kolvar readying another arrow. But before he could give a snort of displeasure on how the elf stole his kill, Romeo's screams pierce through the night and the dragon's attention was drawn to the house where he witnesses the alpha spider, its body easily dwarfing the building beneath it, plunge it head through the ceiling and into the inner sanctum of the Cait Shelter guildhall. When it rears its head back up a moment later, Fonaar let out a sigh of relief to see that Romeo wasn't within its jaws.

But the dragon had no time to waste as it watches the behemoth dive once more into the building, he had to get to Romeo fast. Spreading his wings out and spooking away the nearby spiders that were encroaching on him, with one strong flap Fonaar was up in the air and taking off toward the leader of the horde, fully intended on defeating it to protect Romeo.

But he didn't even get a good dozen yards before something attach to his left rear leg and started pulling him back down to the ground. As he struggles to stay in the air he turns around and spots a white sticky substance encasing his leg. It was the same substance that Fonaar witness grabbed the elf at the beginning of the assault and he follows the string coming off of it lead back down to the ground and into the mouth of one of the spiders. Fonaar couldn't even fathom what was happening before a second shot of the same substance grabbed onto his front right leg. Soon another and another shot of webbing was latching onto the dragon's body coming up from the mob underneath him and within moments, almost half of his body was covered in webbing, but through all of this he refuses to be brought down back to earth as his wings were still freed and even the might of at least a dozen of the giant spiders wasn't enough to take him out of the sky.

It was only when two of the spiders leaped up at him and wrap their legs around him that he finally came crashing to the ground, crushing one of his unwelcome passengers upon impact as its body was underneath Fonaar when he landed. Reacting quickly and using his still free prehensile tail, Fonaar impales the spider that was still on him through the back of his head with his stinger and watches as the life left all eight of its eyes.

Back with Wendy and the others, things were getting tense as the spiders were slowly starting to gain the courage to attack them seeing now that the threat that Fonaar held was at the moment neutralized, if only away from the immediate area. A particular bold spider leaped the dwarf, Moroun, only to receive an ax to the entire left set of its legs for its trouble. As it was dragged back into the horde to be devoured, the dwarf roars a challenge.

"Who else dares to challenge me! I'll take you all on!", he bellows.

"Now is not the time, Moroun!", Zug screams as he dodges out of the way of a spider lunging for him and Kolvar fires three arrows into its eyes.

"Things are started to get tight, I better clear us a path out of here!", Wendy thought as she took another deep breath, readying herself to launch another roar attack that would allow the group to escape to more advantageous ground.

But just as she was at the apex of her attack before releasing it, painful pulses wrack her body causing her to exhale early and unleash an improper roar that still manages to knock away the nearest group of arachnids in her path.

The young dragon-slayer collapse to her knees, gasping for breath but while also leaving herself completely vulnerable to attack, which the nearest pair of spiders quickly capitalize on as they lunge at her. If it wasn't for Kolvar's quick reaction of him firing off half a dozen arrows into their eyes, Wendy's life would have been cut short as she barely notices the two arachnids drop in front of her as she struggles to deal with the pain coursing through her body, originating from her injuries that were inflicted by Fonaar and further expanded by her fight at the temple.

"The potion must be wearing off!", she coughs as she fights through the pain and reaches into her pockets to pull out her remaining vitals only for them to fumble out of her shaking hands. They land with a crash onto the ground in front of her, shattering into pieces. Wendy could only look at the scattered remains of the vials in stun silence before the hairs on her neck rose up and she found herself falling backward just in time to avoid getting her head caught in the powerful fangs of an encroaching spider who surprise attack was only prevented from continuing on and succeeding by Moroun hurling his waraxe into the spider's skull and nearly splitting it two.

"Young lass!", the dwarf calls out as he places his short body between the young dragon-slayer and the horde, his mace now out and ready to deal a quick and painful death to any foe that dares step within range of it, "Stay behind me!"

Wendy being in no position to argue due to the torment coursing through her body merely nods her head as she tries to cope with the pain.

Meanwhile, on the second floor of Yuna's building, Porylusica and Roubaul were assessing the situation.

"Things aren't looking good", Roubaul says as he and the herbalist observe the encirclement in which the main combatants for the village found themselves in.

"What was your first clue?", Porlyusica asks as she looks toward the main building where the towering spider was still plunging its head into the interior in hopes of snagging Romeo, "We have to get over there now!"

"Believe me when I say that I would love to help Romeo, but we have other problems on our hands!", Roubaul cries as he points out the window toward the ground and Porlyusica turns her attention there only to see that part of the horde had broken off and was now climbing up the front of the building toward them. The archers on top of the room were doing their best to keep them at bay but they only had so many arrows.

Meanwhile, Fonaar was once again taking on the majority of the horde alone as he started to form a circle of corpses around him as he attacks in all directions while Romeo's screams fill the night's air. This eventually get the eye of the alpha spider who despite its size was still having trouble catching the elusive Romeo who was darting and rolling any which way he could to escape the beast.

Focusing his attention on the young dragon for a moment, the massive creature suck in a glob of air and shoots something out of its jaws and toward Fonaar who was in the process of dealing with two spiders at the time. The dragon hears something flying through the air in his general direction but by the time he turned his head it was too late as the object that crash into him prove to be an advanced version of the webbing that the smaller spiders used against him as he was immediately flung across the field by the sheer impact of it. The two spiders that he was engaging fare no better as their bodies were simply crushed by the force of the webbing attack.

When Fonaar finally came to a halt, he found himself almost back at the same spot where Wendy and the rest of the hunters were currently surrounded. Seething with anger Fonaar moves to get up only to find himself stuck with all four of his limbs cemented to the ground and his head barely able move. If it wasn't for his dragon's senses and reflexes he never would have reacted in time to the spider that was trying to strike him from behind. His still freed tail lashes out and catches the spider in the side with its stinger forcing to recoil in pain before it was finished off by a second strike that made contact with the side of its head.

The alpha seeing that Fonaar was still a threat despite his decrease mobility decided that enough was enough and lets out another roar that echoes into the night.

Without hesitation, the spiders closest to Fonaar starting shooting out streams of webbing at him almost instantly blanketing him. Within moments and right before everyone's eyes, the dragon was partly entombed in a webbing coffin.

"What are they doing?", Kolvar says as he puts down two more spiders with arrows in the eyes.

"They've neutralized him through attrition", Zug answers while keeping a warily eyes on the spiders that were still surrounding them, "The dragon is too dangerous up close for the spiders so they're simply going to suffocate him by cocooning him in their webbing."

Fonaar's roars of defiance could still be heard even as his head started to get covered and soon enough those were silence as well as his entire body vanishes from sight underneath a sea of white.

Now Wendy and the others were starting to get hard-press as now that Fonaar was out of the way the majority of the remaining spiders decided to focus their attention on them as the group manages to hold their own until they were back up against a giant rock with the horde pressing down upon them. Zug, Moroun, and the hunters were fighting tooth and nail while Kolvar was killing any spiders that try to come from behind them on the rock but his quiver was getting dangerously low, so much that he had to start pulling the arrows out of the dead spiders nearby to keep up his attack. Wendy, on the other hand, was still doing everything she could just to stay alive as she had to cradle ribs to ease her pain while delivering a kick to the face of a charging spider, leaving an imprint in between its eyes.

Zug himself had taken a spear out of a spider corpse and was using it to deadly effect as his training allow him to make precision thrust into the eyes of the incoming monsters and thus a small pile of bodies was starting to stake up around him almost matching Moroun's own.

"They just keep coming!", he told himself as he skews another spider through its lower right eye, "There is no end to them and for some reason, it seems like they're avoiding the villagers and coming straight for us and the girl!"

Back at Yuna's shop, the archers had run of arrows and now the spiders were able to move up the wall unimpeded and burst through the windows into the room where Roubaul and Porlyusica currently reside. The archers came down from the roof into the room with their spears brandish but they were tossed aside by the beasts into the walls and the spiders slowly advance on the two elder, more specifically Porlyusica.

Reaching into her cloak, the Potion Mage puts out three glass balls containing a bluish-green liquid and with all of her strength, she tosses one at the closest spider's face, the glass shattering upon contact with its hide. The smell of burning flesh instantly fills the room as the spider trashes about, colliding into its brethren as Roubaul spots through all the chaos that part of the creature's face has melted off. The death throes of the beast continue on distracting the other spiders which Porlyusica takes advantage of and tosses vials on them as well and soon there were three spiders causing chaos in the room, kicking away fabric stands and threading tools all around.

"What is in those vials?", Roubaul asks while ducking out of the way of a flying mannequin.

"Potent acid", Porlyusica answers, "There are several plants around Magnolia that if you mix them just right they can be deadly to living tissue."

"Never thought a woman like you would have something like that on hand", the village's chief admitted.

"Never though I would be in a situation where I had to use it", she replies as she pulls out two more vials and tosses them at the spiders still pouring into the room.

Back at the main building of the village, the behemoth spider has returned its attention to Romeo who was on the ground looking up into its giant red eyes with overwhelming fear in his young heart.

"Come to me, young master", he hears a voice says and Romeo snaps out of his terrify trance and looks toward the source of the voice, the Savage Blade, which had fallen on the ground during the alpha spider's assault on the building.

"Come and use me to defeat this creature, young Wild Master", the voice says again.

As if he was being controlled by someone else like a puppet, the young boy suddenly felt compel to make a run for the dagger, quickly getting himself off of the ground and dashing for it. He barely manages to move out of the way as the monster tries to skew him once more with its leg and makes a jump toward the dagger when he was just a couple of feet away. He lands on the ground and slid the rest of the way to the blade and his tiny hand was about to grasp the handle…

When he felt a large sticky substance hit him in the back and he felt himself being pulled up harshly. As he struggles in the webbing, he turns upward to see himself getting taken right up into the gaping maw of the alpha spider.

"AHHHHHHHHHH!", the child screams with all the air his tiny lungs could gather, "Mommy! Daddy! Granny Porlyusica! Grandpa Beardy! Wendy! Fonaar! Heeeeellllllllllpppppppppp!"

Deep within the cocoon the spiders encase him in, Fonaar was struggling to stay alive. The airtight and thickness of the webbing made it difficult for him to breathe and he couldn't gather enough air to unleash his sonic attack. He thought about clawing his way out but all of his legs were still encase in the original webbing from the alpha and he lacks the room to bash his way out. He was completely trapped and unable to help Romeo and that fill him with a rage he had never felt before, even surpassing the one he felt when fighting Wendy. It was almost like a fire was swelling up in him.

A faint voice catches his ear and he strains it to make out what it was through the webbing…

"Heeeeeelllllllllppppppppp! Fonaar! Help!"

Fonaar's eyes widen in shock and anger. Romeo was in trouble and yet here he was dying a slow, pathetic death, unable to do anything. The lack of oxygen was starting to affect him and any normal creature in this situation probably would have passed out by now but it was as if his pure rage was keeping him from succumbing to the effects of suffocation as he stays conscious.

Romeo's scream continue to flood into the cocoon and the more Fonaar heard them, the angrier he got and the heat piling up inside of his body was started to get hotter with every passing moment and it felt like it was threatening to burst at any moment.

He had to get out of here.

He had to wipe out the spiders.

He. Had. To. Save. Romeo.

And may the gods or whatever higher entities that governed this world have mercy on the souls of those that try to stop him.

It was at this moment that a symbol appears on Fonaar's chest, glowing brightly in the close space.

Romeo could now see the fine details on the jaws that were about to snack on him as he continues to struggle with all of the might his six-year-old body could muster but it was all in vain as he got ever closer to his demise. He screamed and he screamed but his cries fell on deaf ears as there wasn't anyone who could come to his aide as they all they were all dealing with their own problems.

Porlyusica had run out of vials as she and Roubaul were back into a corner while more spiders poured into the room, trampling over the bodies of their fallen kin to get at the Potion Mage and village chief. Roubaul held his hand out and looked to be preparing a spell but even Porlyusica doubt that he was going to be able to get it off in time.

Wendy, the adventurers, and the remaining hunters were now on their last leg as the spider increase their efforts to defeat them as Kolvar finally ran out of arrows and was forced to use his throwing knives and his daggers to fight back the horde, getting quick shots in whenever one of the spiders was distracted by the others. Zug was forced to break the spear he had in half in other to compensate for the lack of room he was now using it as a thrusting sword while Moroun had to use both his ax and shield just to keep the beasts at bay.

Luckily, because of the piles that the two created beforehand with the spider corpses, the monsters had to take the extra time to climb over the uneven surface in order to get to them and this allowed the group some breathing room, especially Wendy as she was at the very back of the party, laying against the rock while still dealing with the pain wracking her body. A noise from above catches her attention and she turns to see that two of the spiders have jumped onto the rock and were now crawling down toward her.

Steeling herself through the pain, Wendy sucks in some air, "Sky Dragon's Roar!"

A much smaller and weaker version of her spell escape from her mouth but it was enough to knock at least one of the spiders into the air and away from them. Unfortunately, that still left the one that was still coming at her, readying itself to pounce and the girl simply didn't have it in her anymore to cast another spell.

Romeo was now within inches of the beast's maw, still screaming for someone to save him and it was in that brief moment before death that he for some reason remembered the bit of information Porlyusica gave to him before all of this started.

"Fire is the natural enemy of a lot of creatures in the forest."

A bright silver-white light emits from the cocoon and moments later a pillar of fire erupts out from it, lighting up the entire village in its brilliant flames and was preceded by a roar that echoes for miles into the night. Every single soul within the vicinity, be they human, spider, or other froze in place as they were drawn to his powerful display of might. Even the alpha pause, Romeo dangling just right out of his maw as it looks up to see just what exactly interrupted its meal.

Out from the remains of the burnt cocoon, a blur of red leap straight into the night sky. Blood-colored wings spread out at the climax of its jump and the creature took flight, diving straight down at the towering alpha. The beast had no time to respond and all Romeo had time to see was something flash in the moonlight before he was moving through the air almost as if he was being carried and he also took note of a large amount of heat he was suddenly feeling. Before he had a chance to question this he felt himself gently place on the ground and hears the flapping of wings moving away from him. He moves the webbing out of his way and was scared senseless when he came face to face with the alpha spider, but before he could have a full freak-out he notices that the head wasn't moving and that the light was gone from the monster's huge red eyes.

It was then that Romeo sees he was only looking at just the head of the beast and it wasn't attached to the rest of its body which the boy saw was now collapse on top of the Cait Shelter Guild Hall, its guts oozing out onto the outer wall.

The only son of Macao and Enno Conbolt spots something flying above him and turns his attention skyward just in time to see a column of fire be unleashed upon the horde from the sky and the stench of burning flesh clogs up his nostrils and made him retch.

Wendy couldn't believe what she was seeing. One moment she and the others were on the verge of being overrun and the next they were all staring in amazement and horror as the spiders were being decimated by fire and it was in the light provided by that devastating flame that she saw it. It was just for a moment but her heightened senses allow to catch it all and what she saw frighten her to the very core.

The powerful smell of sulfur and pumice. The indistinguishable red scales. The fiery breath that made you think that the gates of hell themselves have been open.

"Red Dragon", she whispers in a mixture of disbelief and fear, "A red dragon is here in the village."

But part of her brain was telling her that that was impossible but the other part was telling her that she saw what she saw.

Fonaar went into that cocoon and a red dragon came out.
