Chapter Twenty-Five
The atmosphere in the Royal Stadium was overwhelming. The match had been sold out mere minutes after the tickets were available and it showed, everyone was totally ecstatic about the event.
Even though Yuito was only watching it though television, he was really catching onto the energy in there. Jeanie still had both his and Keiji's tickets available, but Keiji was in no condition to attend and Yuito decided to stay in Jeanies hideout, given that this was the night of the Convergence and all.
The pre-show had been going on for about an hour before the duel even started, cameras panning all over more or less known celebrities that arrived in the arena. Yuito recognized none of them by name, but he knew he saw some of them on newspaper pictures. Not that he cared about any of them.
Except for one of course, the King, who took his seat in a special lounge with bulletproof glass covering its front. It made Yuito uneasy that this man was going to be overthrown tonight if everything went according to Jeanies plan. He didn't even look that royal. Yuito expected someone with a huge crown, lots of gold, red and purple and shit going on, but he looked surprisingly dull in a white and gray military suit with a white robe over it. He looked well into his fifties, but his blonde hair still seemed pretty natural.
But today the attention wasn't on him, at least not just now, but on Jeanie and her opponent, Eivin. Upon seeing his face in the advertisement leading up to the duel, he realized that it was actually the kid who bought Yuito some fast food on the day he met Tian the first time, the one he gave his first ever autograph to.
He didn't really know what to make of it, whether Eivin was actually just a very nice guy or whether he just did that for PR. Then again he never exploited it, so it was probably just the former.
Just because of that, he kinda also wanted Eivin to do good, even though Jeanie was his best friends sister and has been really kind to both of them. In the end, Yuito wasn't too keen on picking a favorite, but if someone put a gun to his head he'd always pick Jeanie. Mostly also because she'd be the most likely to get the gun away from his head.
Luckily that was not up to his choosing. According to what Jeanie said, she prepared numerous counter strategies to everything that Eivin would throw at her, but then again, so would Eivin have done as well, unless he was ridiculously confident in his abilities.
He was going to see, as the pre-show was coming to an end and they were about to announce the arrival of the duelists.
"Ladies and gentleman," a voice from the television and probably also in the stadium announced, "this is the moment you've all been waiting for. Let me allow you to present to you, the Airship Angel, the Silver Queen, the one and only, Jeanie!"
The camera panned to one of the entrances to the field, from which Keijis sister emerged, flamethrowers blasting off on her way out as she went past them. She walked up a flight of stares, towards an elevating platform that overlooked the field, opposite to another platform for Eivin.
The cheers were unbearable, apparently Jeanies fan groups mostly consisted of girls and young boys, as far as Yuito could tell from the shots panning across the audience.
"And now, our resident champion, the boy wonder from the countryside, the Northerner Eivin!" The camera panned to the opposite entrance, from which Eivin, still with his brown leather jacket and roundish face emerged, accompanied by white smoke billowing behind him. Instead of being flanked by flamethrowers, he smiled and casually waved at the audience while ascending the stairs.
"Hi Jeanie," he said, "your entrance looked really badass."
"Thanks little man," she replied, "gotta admit, my original approach was a little over the top. It included doves and a flowing ballgown. But that would've been too distracting."
"I liked it better this way," he said, "I wish you best of luck."
"So do I. You'll need it."
"Ladies and gentleman!" the announcers voice blared across the stadium, "let the battle for the title of Number One begin!"
On that cue, the entire audience yelled "Duel!" as Jeanie and Eivin started up their Duel Disks.
Jeanie: 4000 LP
Eivin: 4000 LP
"In order to find out who begins this epic fight," the announcer yelled, "we need to: Spin. The. Wheel!"
The crowd cheered as a red and blue wheel with the duelists names on it started to spin on a large video screen, and when it stopped at Eivins name, the boy wasted no time.
"I'll take the lead then," he said, "I Normal Summon True North – Snow the Hunter!" A monster clad in fur and worn-out leather appeared on Eivins side of the field, its face obscured by cloth hiding it from terrible cold.
True North – Snow the Hunter: WATER / Aqua / Effect / Level 4 / 1800 ATK / 1500 DEF
"Upon being Normal Summoned, Snow can equip a WATER Tuner from my deck to it. I choose my True North – Skri the Spear." A weapon appeared in the monsters hand with a long shaft and a fish on top of it, with a sharp tip, "when it is equipped to a monster, Skri increases its ATK by 400 points."
Snow the Hunter: 1800 ATK → 2200 ATK
"I then Set one card face-down and end my turn," Eivin finished.
"My turn," Jeanie said, "and I start by Normal Summoning my Battleballoon – Rescue Blimp." A small airship appeared above Jeanie, with white fabric and a red cross drawn on the sides.
Battleballoon - Rescue Blimp: FIRE / Machine / Effect / Level 4 / 1700 ATK / 1900 DEF
"I can discard any card to activate my Rescue Blimps effect. If the discarded card is a monster, I can raise its Level by the Level of that monster I discarded. And I choose to discard my Supply Blimp, which is Level 4."
Battleballoon – Rescue Blimp: Level 4 → Level 8
"This in turn activates the effect of Supply Blimp as it was discarded to activate a monster effect. It allows me to revive it, and make its Level equal to that of another Battleballoon I control." A graveyard portal opened up in front of Jeanie, from which a second blimp ascended, with blue fabric, several bags strapped to it.
Battleballoon - Supply Blimp: FIRE / Machine-Type / Effect / Level 4 / 1500 ATK / 2100 DEF
Battleballoon – Supply Blimp: Level 4 → Level 8
"Next up," Jeanie continued, "I overlay my two Level 8 Balloons to construct the Overlay Network!"
The two monsters turned red and spiraled upwards into a portal that opened in the sky: "Bring upon the fiery wrath of the downtrodden! Xyz Summon! Arise, my Assault Airship!" The portal compusted and a large airship slowly descended onto the field, armed with dozens of guns and flamethrowers which it slowly all aimed towards Eivin.
Battleballoon – Assault Airship: FIRE / Machine-Type / Xyz / Effect / Rank 8 / 2800 ATK / 1800 DEF / 2 Xyz Materials
"Upon being Xyz Summoned, Assault Airship lets me attach up to two Spells or Traps from the field to it as material, as long as one is face-up and the other is face-down."
"Then I might as well flip one up, should I?" Eivin intervened, "I activate my Trap Card Arctic Storm. Upon being activated, it halves the ATK of all face-up monsters, and it will re-Set itself during my next Standby Phase."
"So you're weakening both of our monsters? Or am I right to assume you're not?"
"You're right. In chain I activate the effect of Snow to banish it until my next Standby Phase in order to dodge this effect. Which in turn will also send Skri to the Graveyard so its no longer an eligible target for your monsters effect."
A gale of wind swept around Eivins monster, which had disappeared after it subsided, only to be followed up by an even stronger gust from his Trap Card, which covered Jeanies airship in snow.
Battleballoon – Assault Airship: 2800 ATK → 1400 ATK
Afterwards, the Trap Card Eivin used turned into a red orb and began orbiting around the huge airship, together with the other two red orbs.
Battleballoon – Assault Airship: 2 Xyz Materials → 3 Xyz Materials
"Since Skri was just sent to the grave because the monster it was equipped to left the field, I can bring it right back from the Graveyard onto my field." A purple portal opened, from which a long fish emerged, with a sharp head.
True North - Skri the Spear: WATER / Fish-Type / Effect / Tuner / Level 2 / 800 ATK / 800 DEF
"That thing is your line of Defense?"
"600 points difference to your monsters attack, so I think its not too bad, is it?"
"Comparing numbers when you could compare fire power, huh? Now, how about this," Jeanie pointed a finger upwards towards her monster, "Assault Airship, take out Skri the Spear. Revolt Barrage!"
The airships guns slightly adjusted themselves before shooting in unison, riddling the fish with bullets.
"That thing is packing quite some fire power," Eivin said with a smile.
"Oh, you have no idea what fire power is," Jeanie continued, "I Set three cards face-down and end my turn right there."
"Then its my turn," her opponent continued, "and during my turn, Snow returns to the field."
The gust of icy wind swept up again, returning Eivins monster to the field.
True North – Snow the Hunter: WATER / Aqua / Effect / Level 4 / 1800 ATK / 1500 DEF
"I next Normal Summon my True North – Ktor the Knife!" Another fish appeared on Eivins side of the field, this time much shorter and much more slender, a sharp edge running down its belly.
True North – Ktor the Knife: WATER / Fish-Type / Effect / Tuner / Level 2 / 400 ATK / 400 DEF
"I tune Ktor with Snow the Hunter for a Synchro Summon!" Eivin said as his monster turned into two stars that rose in the sky where they formed two rings. Snow also flew upwards and when it was in between the rings its body became transparent revealing four stars, which aligned with the rings.
"Envoy of the icy winter, rain down upon my opponent! Synchro Summon, Level 6! True North – Arika the Striking Hail!" The Synchro Monster that appeared on Eivins field was a female warrior wrapped in similar brown leather clothing as Snow was. It's long white hair peeked out from under its hood and it wielded a spear made from ice.
True North – Arika the Striking Hail: WATER / Aqua-Type / Synchro / Effect / Level 6 / 2100 ATK / 2200 DEF
"When Arika is Summoned, it can equip itself with any Tuner from my Graveyard, and I choose Skri, which in turn will raise her attack by 400." The spear the monster wielded changed, until it became the fish that Snow had wielded beforehand.
True North – Arika the Striking Hail: 2100 ATK → 2500 ATK
"Arika, go on and attack Assault Airship!" The monster drew its spear back and hurled it at the giant airship, where it struck and appeared to cause a small explosion in the engine.
Jeanie: 4000 LP → 2900 LP
"I activate my Continuous Trap Card Second Payload!" Jeanie yelled as she flipped one of her three cards up, "if one of my Battleballoons would be destroyed by battle, I can use this effect to prevent the destruction and raise my monsters ATK by 1000!"
Battleballon - Assault Airship: 1400 ATK → 2400 ATK
"What a nice safe!" Eivin said, "too bad for you, my Arika gains an additional attack for every Tuner equipped to it. And although I cannot attack directly with any additional attacks, I can get rid of that Airship of yours." The spear reappeared in the warriors hand, but she immediately hurled it off again, this time piercing the fabric of the airship, causing a giant explosion as Assault Airship crashed into the arena.
Jeanie: 2900 LP → 2800 LP
"What a great amount of damage!" Jeanie quipped, "is it my turn yet?"
"Almost, don't worry," Eivin replied as genuine as ever, "I only Set one more card and then I end my turn."
"Good," Jeanie said, "I activate my Spell Card Desperate Stand. It forces me to discard all remaining cards in my hand and then, I can revive any monster from my Graveyard, but its ATK will become zero."
A graveyard portal appeared in the sky, from which a badly damaged Assault Airship emerged, crashing into the arena right next to Jeanie.
Battleballoon – Assault Airship: FIRE / Machine-Type / Xyz / Effect / Rank 8 / 2800 ATK / 1800 DEF
Battleballoon – Assault Airship: 2800 ATK → 0 ATK
Soon after the graveyard portal had closed again, another one opened up, this one being galaxy-shaped.
"Using my Assault Airship that has no Overlay Units left, I reconstruct the Overlay Network!" Her giant machine turned into red light and spiraled into the portal, "Rank-Up Xyz Change! Aim your weapons at those in power and take away their privileges! Rank 9, Battleballoon – Raid Airship!" The portal combusted and a heavily armed airship descended from it. It had guns and cannons draped all over itself, along with metal appendages to perform ramming attacks. The letters 'BB' were spray-painted on each side of it.
Battleballoon – Raid Airship: FIRE / Machine-Type / Xyz / Effect / Rank 9 / 3400 ATK / 3000 DEF / 1 Xyz Material
"Wow," Eivin said, "seeing this thing in TV is one thing, but being in its crosshair for yourself is sure something else."
"If you've seen it on TV, you're gonna know what happens next, don't you?"
"Of course," he replied, "if it is Summoned via Xyz Change, it will take cards from my hand and absorb them as materials until we both have the same number of cards in our hand."
"That's it," Jeanie said, "it's only two Overlay Units, but that's your entire hand since I have no more either." Two large magnets folded out from the airship and, using its magnetic waves, drew the cards in Eivins hand into its cluster of red Xyz Materials.
Battleballoon – Raid Airship: 1 Xyz Material → 3 Xyz Materials
"Moving to battle then," Jeanie said, "Raid Airship, take out his Arika. Burning Air Ram!" The metal appendages heated up until they glowed bright red and the airship started its thrusters, coming towards the female warrior with full ramming speed.
"I activate the effect of Skri the Spear!" Eivin intervened, "when the equipped monster is targeted for an attack, I can immediately Synchro Summon a monster using the equipped monster and Skri!" The spear turned into two stars which flew into the sky and formed two green rings. As those rings enveloped Arika, she became transparent, revealing six stars that aligned with the rings.
"Synchro Summon! Soldier from the great white north, cast your frozen wrath upon my opponent! Level 8, True North – Arnok the Cold Morning!" A flash of light struck along the stars and when it subsided, a hooded warrior, its face shrouded, appeared where the woman just stood. It was dressed in snowy leather garment and carried a large spear. The air around it was so cold he was shrouded in thick fog.
True North – Arnok the Cold Morning: WATER / Aqua-Type / Synchro / Effect / Level 8 / 3000 ATK / 2200 DEF
"Yeah," Jeanie said, eyeing the Synchro Monster, "that's not gonna help you. I call a replay. Raid Airship, turn that right around and annihilate Arnok if he insists."
The airship rounded the stadium and when it was facing the players again, it opened several panels from which it launched heat-seeking missiles. Even though it took them a moment to lock onto Arnoks sheer cold, they eventually darted towards their target.
"It is gonna help," Eivin replied to Jeanie, "but on my next turn. I use Arnoks effect to banish it until my next Standby Phase and move it out of the way of your attack." The fog around the monster became thicker as a snowstorm started to envelope it.
"Not so fast," Jeanie intervened, as the second of her three Trap Cards flipped up, "I activate the Continuous Trap Card Ground Anchor!"
"What?" Eivin said, for the first time in this duel visibly taken aback, "you've never used that card before. What does it do?"
"Oh I picked this one up just for you, sugar," Jeanie replied cockily, "it allows me to target any monster on the field and prevent it from leaving the field via a card effect this turn. So in a way it is the perfect weapon to fight against your evasion style."
As they spoke, metal ropes sprung from the ground, attaching themselves to the Synchro Monster and pulling it down to ground level, out of the snowstorm that would have saved it from the attack.
"You put that card in your deck only because it counters me?"
"Why yes, did you do nothing of sorts?" Jeanie said, "I'm sorry, but I cannot have Arnok stick around until your next turn. It's effect will banish my Airship and then you'll attack me directly and win. Which is what I'm trying to evade."
The missiles struck Arnok, ripping the monster to pieces in a fiery explosion.
Eivin: 4000 LP → 3600 LP
The snowstorm that had enveloped the Synchro Monster grew thicker and thicker until it couldn't be seen through and when it finally disappeared, the female warrior that had been used as Synchro Material stood on Eivins field again.
True North – Arika the Striking Hail: WATER / Aqua-Type / Synchro / Effect / Level 6 / 2100 ATK / 2200 DEF
"When Arnok is destroyed, it revives a WATER Synchro monster from my Graveyard with a level lower than this," Eivin said panting, "I admit I don't put this effect to use very often."
"Oh I put this effect to use very often," Jeanie retorted, "I detach one Xyz Material from Raid Airship to allow for another attack!" The airship absorbed one of its Xyz Materials in its front, from which two more gates opened and revealed two large flamethrowers, aiming them at the warrior.
Battleballoon – Raid Airship: 3 Xyz Materials → 2 Xyz Materials
"In response, I use Arikas effect," Eivin said, "I can banish it until my next Standby Phase!" Once again his monster was enveloped by a snowstorm, this time actually causing the monster to vanish.
"Of course you'd take that direct attack," Jeanie mused, "if I had destroyed your monster, I could've just done it again. Obvious moves."
The flamethrowers then fired, dousing Eivin in flames and eating away a giant chunk of his Life Points.
Eivin: 3600 LP → 200 LP
"Did I put the boy wonder at a disadvantage at last?" Jeanie said, "You have no cards on the field and none in your hand. Good luck trying to turn this one around. I end my turn right here."
"I'll try and put some effort into it," Eivin said as he drew his card, "and you're only partially right, because Arika returns to my field during the Standby Phase." The snowstorm swept up again, returning the female warrior to where it previously stood.
True North – Arika the Striking Hail: WATER / Aqua-Type / Synchro / Effect / Level 6 / 2100 ATK / 2200 DEF
"From my hand, I then activate the Spell Card Arctic Schooling!"
"You've got to be kidding me," Jeanie replied, "this is what you topdeck? That?"
Ignoring her, Eivin went on: "It allows me to revive a Fish monster from my Graveyard and if that monster is Level 2 or lower I can Special Summon another copy of that monster straight from my Deck. And I choose to revive Ktor the Knife." The slender fish reappeared on Eivins field, before being joined by a second copy of itself.
True North – Ktor the Knife: WATER / Fish-Type / Effect / Tuner / Level 2 / 400 ATK / 400 DEF (2x)
"And now, I tune both my Ktor's with my Synchro Monster Arika!"
The two fish turned into stars which flew upwards to form rings, however, these rings were blue instead of green and appeared to be made of icy particles. Arika flew into those rings and just when the light flashed, a strong gust of wind swept up blowing snow all over the arena, covering the entire scene in solid vision ice and snow.
"When the white winds blow and the ferocious cold comes, all that will be left in its wake is ice and death. Level 10, True North – Torrak the Eternal Winter!"
Unlike Eivins other monsters, this one wasn't wrapped in brown leather garment. Instead, it seemed to wear an armor and a helmet fashioned from ice, icicles protruding from it into all directions. At some points the ice was clear enough to see through, revealing pale skin that hadn't been exposed to the sunlight in years. It carried a large spear made from ice and while it floated in front of Eivin, the air around it froze into tiny crystals floating around it, slowly growing in size.
True North – Torrak the Eternal Winter: WATER / Aqua-Type / Synchro / Effect / Level 10 / 3600 ATK / 3100 DEF
"I think it's time to bring out your Rank 10 if you intend to fight Torrak," Eivin said.
"While his Summon is unfortunate, I don't think I'll have to bother bring out Revolution Airship to defeat him. Raid Airship will do just fine."
"Let's see about that," Eivin said, "Torrak will now attack Raid Airship, which in turn activates his effect: He can equip any monster you control or in your Grave to it as an Equip Card."
The warrior drew back its spear, before reaching one hand towards Raid Airship, an icy gale sweeping up covering the machine with snow.
"As if," Jeanie replied, "I activate my last Trap Card: Beacon of Revolution! It prevents my Xyz Monsters from being the targets of any of your card effects."
Raid Airships balloon lighted up, melting the snow that covered it and forcing Torrak to turn its attention to Jeanies Duel Disk instead.
"No!" Eivin yelled, "you cannot do that!"
"Oh I can and I will," Jeanie said, "come on, pick a monster from my Graveyard to equip so we can go on."
"In chain I activate Torraks other effect," Eivin hurried, "I can banish it until my next Standby Phase and when he goes, he takes one of your monsters with him – permanently!"
The snowstorm swept up again, obscuring both Torrak and Raid Airship from view. But just before they were about to disappear, metal wires shot from the ground ensnaring Torrak, causing the snowstorm to subside.
"I use the effect of Ground Anchor to prevent your monster from leaving the field. And since yours doesn't leave, it doesn't take mine either."
"No!" Eivin yelled.
"Pick the monster from my Graveyard."
Gritting his teeth, Eivin finally made his choice: "I choose to equip Supply Blimp instead." The card darted out of Jeanies Graveyard and a frozen balloon appeared behind Eivin.
True North – Torrak the Eternal Winter: 3600 ATK → 4600 ATK
And with the entire chain having resolved, the warrior finally threw his spear. When it struck Raid Airship, it spread a huge cast of ice across the monster, threatening to crush it.
Jeanie: 2800 LP → 1600 LP
"You just activated my Second Payload. It allows me to prevent this instance of destruction and raise my monsters ATK by 1000 in turn!"
The casket cracked and split open, falling from the Airship as it rose to new heights.
Battleballoon – Raid Airship: 3400 ATK → 4400 ATK
Desperate, Eivin sank to his knee, with Jeanie noting: "You know what happens next, do you?"
"Of course," Eivin replied as calmly as he could, "since you have no cards in your hand and your monsters ATK changed, Beacon of Revolutions second effect will damage me equal to half your monsters original ATK. 1700 points of damage, which is more than I have Life Points left. Congratulations Jeanie. You won the first spot on the list."
Just as Eivin has said, Jeanies Trap Card lit up, before the Airship dropped a load of carpet bombs past Torrak and straight onto Eivin, reducing his Life Points to 0.
Eivin: 200 LP → 0 LP
And as the crowd went haywire, either crying out in triumph or disbelief, the first step of Jeanies plan had gone to fruition. She became champion. Anything that followed would just go swimmingly for her.
