Chapter 36
"Will you hurry and get down here or you will be left." The king voiced as he leaned against the stone wall, he was already irritated and impatient and the day had only just begun. "Zira I swear I'll leave you." He wasn't joking and Zira knew this. She had given Shia one last nuzzle goodbye. Leaving her cub with her loyal pridesisters.
"You know how it is boss, moms cant separate from their little ones." Onzi, one of Scar loyal-and in his mind, favorite hyena spoke.
"Please, Zira isn't that type. At least she didn't use to be. Now I'm not so sure. This whole Vitani thing is really getting on my nerves. Hmp, she's become too soft. But I guess that what happens when you give birth to females…"
"Haha good one boss!"
The brown lion adjusted uneasily from paw to paw, yawning while he did so.
"You alright boss?"
"Yes, I just didn't get much sleep."
"How come?"
"If I knew why, I wouldn't have done sleepless. I think it was that wildebeest the lionesses brought. I don't think it agreed with me."
"Oh well, that can happen boss. Although i can relate, you know nothing phrases us dogs!"
"Yes...nothing can harm those filth hidden stomachs." Onzi smiled with pride, if only he knew that it wasn't a compliment.
"I know…" green eyes trailed up the walkway to the entrance of the royal den. What the hell was taking her so long?! He was already starting his morning off on the wrong paw. Zira wasn't helping. " great kings- Onzi call Zira at once!"
The snap in his voice rung in the poor dog battered eardrum. By now Onzi was use to the sudden yelling and snappy attitude, but still a warning wouldn't hurt though.
"You got it boss!" Onzi ran halfway up the walkway. "OH QUEEN ZIRA!!!-" the dog instantly drew back when he was greeted with a rather unfriendly sounding queen.
"I'm COMING!!"
"…oh…ugh…she's coming right now boss!" Scar rolled his green eyes to the fool. He again slumped his weight aginst the warming rock surface.
"…idiots…" within a few seconds Zira came walking down. Onzi and the other 9 dogs that would be accompanying the royal pair noticed she too was in a bit of a mood.
"Sorry, I didn't think we'd be out this early." However, her sorry, didn't sound too sorry.
"Of course you didn't." As soon as her paws left the priderock walkway that led to the royal den Scar quickly turned on his heels and began walking away. "This will take us all day and you staying doing whatever the hell it was you were doing was wasting valuable time. I hope you enjoy walking in the miserable heat"
"I know." She voiced following behind him. What was he so irritated about? She was only a few minutes late, he could get the stick that was in his ass out. "What's with you?"
"Nothing, just irritated." Scar lead the way with a growing gap between he and Zira. All hyenas trialed back in the distance as protective scouts.
"Where is that son of yours?"
"Who?"
"Don't play coy with me, Nuka where is Nuka?" Scar shook his head clear of any negative thoughts. He had to remember why he was bringing her along. A royal pair has to show up to events …together.
"How would I know? I didn't see the boy."
"He didn't come home last night."
"…fascinating." He vocied dully, Scar truly...truly didn't care.
"I'm serious Scar, when we get back. I think you need to have a word with him. To get his head straight, after all, all he wants is your approval."
"And he'll get it when he does something worth my approving."
"You're too hard on him-" which was funny for her to say, ancient yesterday she let poor Nuka have it. Telling him about himself and about he other cub. She could see the crushed looked in his eyes. In truth she wanted to see it, maybe then, Nuka will completely step up. And all her pain and suffering she had put herself though will be worth it. She was suppose to me the mother of kings! That was her calling and is what Scar promised. But it's funny how Scars promises work out. They never really work out for her.
"I wasn't hard enough. And now look whats he grown into. A weak pushover. It's pathetic."
"I wish you wouldn't talk about him like that, he is you only true born son-" her eyes caught the millisecond of his head turning to snap at her.
"I don't care if he were my only son, the boys too weak and too into himself to impress me, now I don't know if you've noticed but I'm already irritated! Do me a favor and don't say anything for the remainder of the journey…"
"Fine." The king began to walk faster. The heat from the rising sun starting to overwhelm the land already. Great. Zira knew better than to try to close the gap between them.
"Damn lionesses." The brown king had a feeling that this wasn't going to be his day. It was already going wrong, but little did he know it was about to get much much worse.
The sun was beaming on the backs on all six members of the once great pridelands lionesses. They had reached the outskirts of the pridelands by mid-morning. The sun was fully out and the heat was unbearable but now was the time. Scar was away from priderock, and now was the time to go over any tactical errors.
"Scar is gone, but there are still plenty of hyenas roaming the area. We need to get to as many hyenas as we can to down there numbers over us. We will start with the ones near the outside first. Anyone you see, who doesn't step down on command, you kill."
Nala could hear Sarabi going over the plan of attack with them. And she herself ran. The play over and over again in her head. It had to be just perfect…it just had to.
She stood in front of a thick layered shrub. There Kopa would be safe from any outside predators. But for right now the cub was too busy chewing on his caretaker tail to even notice the stressful situation. In all means. Nala guesses it was good that he was this young. He was completely oblivious to anything and everything around him. Well anything dangerous that is.
As she kneed in her ears to hear everything she would catch words like kill, wipeout, surrender. Everything sounded so…brutal to her. She knew this was it and that this was practically war but still, Nala could imagine what war would look like.
It would be bad? But bad wouldn't be able to justify the things they, her mother, her leader…were about to do.
But she had to put a brave face on. She couldn't let anyone know she was scared out of her right mind for them. Her fear from her cubhood innocence would not help anyone. The last she Nala wanted to be was a hinderance to her family.
It just meant she would have to suck up her fear for a few moments until everything was over. Still, the notion was easier said then done.
The young lioness quickly snapped back to reality when she saw to figures coming towards her.
"We're about to leave." Voiced a red eyed lioness. Which was basically Nala cue to know now was the time to say her goodbyes.
"Mom!" She raced up to her, and nuzzled her mother so tight-like it was the last time she see her on earth. For all she knew…it could be. "Please be careful…"
"I will, we all will, don't worry." Even in a situation like this her mother could find ways to calm her nerves, which was amazing. Didn't her mother fear what was about to happen? Had she already gone something like this before. Sarafina- no all the adults were so collected. It made Nala upset to think she was the only one really freaking out about this. "Sarabi…"
The mother and daughter watched on as Sarabi said on final goodbye to her little boy. She licked his cheek and played with his little patch of hair that sat almost awkwardly on his little head. She even had a smile on her face while she did so. But when she turned to face the others the look of delight and love was done.
She was serious now, dead serious.
She walked forward. "Right, let's go." Before she could walk pass Nala the young lioness jumped in front on her.
"Remember your promise…"
"I remember." Nala would take that just fine as a satisfied answer. " you two stay away, and don't come back to priderock unless we come and get you. We shouldn't be long."
"..okay…"
"Stay safe… and look out for Kopa."
"I'll protect him with my life, I swear it." And that was all the reassurance sarabi needed to keep the plan moving forward. In truth she was scared, wouldn't anyone be, especially when they have a young cub to look after. If something were to happen to her then what? What would be of her cub…without her.
Thankfully she doesn't have to think like that. She can't think like that, especially now.
Nala watched with an aching heart and nervous stomach as her mother and the rest of the pride vanished into the blinding rays of the hot savanna sun, to retake their kingdom.
The stinging sensation in his stomach was starting to burn more and more with each passing second. Damn that wildebeest must really not be agreeing with Scar. With that and the heat the brown lion was feeling down right miserable.
"Ugh, damn this heat…" suddenly he came to a halt and everyone following behind him did as well.
"Whats up boss?" Voiced Onzi
"We're taking a break now."
"Really- cool! Everyone break!" Scar walked over rather cumbersomely to a dying tree, that would give him some shade from the burning son.
"Dammit." Everything within his body was starting to…more than ache. But Scar couldn't understand why, and he damn sure wasn't going acknowledge it. We wasn't some weak king that needed doted on paw and tail.
His father beat that out of him years ago. But still with uncertain odd feeling that was in him- almost sick like, was starting to from questions of what could be happening to him. Was this so bad food poisoning-
"A break and so soon?"
"I'm tried." He voiced dully, lowering himself slowly on to the floor.
" Hmp, well that isn't like you." Scar Ignored that comment.
"Are you okay?" The brown lion could feel his lioness eyes on him
"Hm? Why do you ask."
"Something just seems off, that's all."
"You're over reacting Zira, it's nothing serious."
"But something is off then?"Scar rolled his green eyes. Lionesses always over analyze everything, with there emotions. This is the main reason he never consulted Zira or any lioness for the matter for anything.
"It's just a bug."
"Maybe we should head back? and wait for you feel bett-"
"Don't be ridiculous Zira." She was only trying to help. Either way Scar was being a real pain to her right now.
"Alright alright, it was just a suggestion. I can see something is off with you Scar. I'm trying to help you know how your health is-"
"I don't need your help!" He suddenly got up and began moving again.
"Everyone get up! Breaks over…" the party of 11 watched on in dismay. They had just settled done, just gotten comfortable in some sort of shade and now, they were back moving.
"Whats with the boss Queen Zira?" Asked Onzi as he stepped forward.
"Nothing, your kings just a fool…" Onzi watched as Zira begrudgingly got up and started following the brown lion back into the beaming sun.
What was wrong with that lion sometimes, why did he always have a problem when it came to asking for help. And not even asking for help, but knowing one's limits.
The fact of the matter is Nuka didn't get his failing health when he was born from Zira. Like she said before, Nuka had taken his father undesirable traits. Which would be his health.
Scars is not the roughest and toughest lion that ever walked the pridelands. That was for sure, the big difference he had was his thinking. He was always thinking, and cunning from nature. That what drew Zira to him.
He was a mastermind- at least that's what she believed him to be. Years before the idea of killing Mufasa, Scar had confided to her countless times how he was tried to being so weak compared to his brother.
Hours and hours of self doubt and even hate, plagued him. In all of his younger years and continued as he matured. Scar knew it was all about the superficial, the look. The look could convey power, status…everything.
And that look was something he was born without. Zira remembered how they would spend countless nights together, as young lovers. Getting to now get other. Each and every night, Scar would find a way to bring the topic of his brother Mufasa and his unfair treatment in the conversation.
He often talked about it so much that it made him literally sick, countless times. Where he was unable to move. Zira knew that the prideland lions thought Scar was being distance or disrespectful. But the truth was, he had drove himself to sickness most night due to his obsession. And that only changed when Scar came up with a fool proof plan to kill Mufasa.
Since his death, Scar had not had a sick night. Which was much to Zira's relief. She was always the one to care for him, pick him back up on his feet and give him the love an affection he so desperately needed. But that still wouldn't be enough.
"Scar." She voiced waking up beside him. " you need to rest."
"I'm fine. I couldn't be any better."
"You still don't look it-"
"Enough! Just keep it moving. You talking about it will only make me feel worse." He brushed passed her, again leading the way to the Mountain pride. "It's just a few more miles to go."
The mandrill was up in his tree, racing at top speed, mixing potions and blowing crushed ashes into the air. Last night the spirit of Mufasa came so him in a dream a vision almost. Telling him of the events that were about to unfold. Today would be the downfall on his brother Scar.
The mandrill was thrilled, he knew the time of the evil king was finally over. However, the plague that was befalling the prideland was not over….it wasn't even close.
After his vision was over, Rafiki jumped to his feet. His heart racing. He had spent all night, trying reach the Great Kings and talk to them. What did Mufasa mean this wasn't the end of the plague that had befallen his home?
He inhaled the smoke and drank the mixed potions of grass and fruit seed mixture. Then they came… the Visions. Flashes of the events to come horrified him. So much blood, and pain… and loss.
"No no no…dis can't be." His voice was breathless as the last of the Visions came and went. "…no…it can't be like dis…"
But it had to, and he knew it. The things that were about to happen to the pridelands, the lionesses, Simba, Nuka and Scar…had to happen for the end vision to occur. For the final take over to occur…much more had to happen.
And he could do nothing about it. "No…." Rafiki tossed his bowl that still had some red dyed liquid in it. The lose would be great -to great for him to conceive.
