Obscurus Books, Publisher since 1926
This book is dedicated to my wife, Doctor Mildred O'Connor-Lupin, and the adorable daughter we adopted, Kristin. I would also like to publicly voice my appreciation for Harry Potter, his bonded dragon, Chekiath, the unbonded dragon, Cnordth, who became one of my closest friends, and the unbonded dragons Spath, Dronth, and many others, who shared their memories with me so that I could record them for the future of dragon-kind and ultimately gain the wonderful designation of Weyr Historian.
This book will talk about the history of the dragons on Earth and Harry Potter's fight to not only set up the first Weyr on Earth but to gain a first-people status for all the dragons, and ultimately for all the intelligent species, of the world.
This book is set for its first publication date to be July 31, 2040, in honor of The Weyrleader's 60th birthday.
With that in mind, I begin.
Remus John Lupin
It is with regret that I must take over this great work after the passing of my friend Remus on March 10, 2200. He has been an inspiration to everyone in the Dragon Nation and many others in two worlds over the years. With this Third Edition, I would like to dedicate this book to not only Remus John Lupin, but to use it to celebrate two hundred years of the Dragon Nations' positive impact on our world as of June 1, 2210. As always, this Edition comes out on July 31 to honor our very first Weyrleader, Harry James Potter.

Chapter 1: Earth's first Weyr, Disko Island
Dragons are a class five beast who provide the wizarding community with considerable resources. It is our responsibility to preserve and protect these creatures so that we will always have them available for our needs. Dragons are excellent sources of enchanted leather, potion ingredients, and heart strings for wands.
Excerpt from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them by Newt Scamander. Published 1927.
It is an unusual feeling to be told that what you know is wrong. Thus, when the knowledge of the true nature of Dragons came to light, it was no wonder that the Wizards rebelled against the idea, pitting themselves against another intelligent species. Dragons were an economic resource that man was reluctant to give up without a fight.
Like any other social change, the establishment of the first true Weyrs of Earth resulted in a struggle between Muggle and Wizard society. It would be the first major conflict between the two since the collapse of the Spanish Inquisition in 1834. The conflict began with the great dragon economic boycott, brought about by the impression of Harry James Potter and his dragon, Chekiath.
Without a doubt, one of the most intriguing and unusual features of the dragons is their ability to retain and pass on complex memories spanning thousands of generations. While it might not be fair to say that everything a dragon has experienced is shared, research suggests that a line of dragons sharing the same genetic ancestors will share the same memories. It is for this reason that all dragons on Earth remember Sidraneth, or as they prefer to call her, the Mother of All Dragons.
Magic or Science? That is one of the principal debates surrounding dragons. We know for a fact that the dragons have several key abilities that were engineered into them, and others that seemed to have evolved over time. The dragon's ability to control their own weight, or their ability to channel the cold of Between, seem to be less part of their design and more magic, but it's doubtful that anyone will know for sure.
The Weyrs of Earth were established based solely on the needs of the dragons. Disko Island Weyr was an ancient refuge of the dragon clans before it became the hatching Weyr. The island was incapable of sustaining a large population of dragons until the Government of Greenland was asked if the dragons could use the space. Now the Weyr is the central hatching Weyr, with its large enclosed stadium for hatchings. It's also a popular tourist spot for people who want to experience Weyr life.
Currently, the Hatching Grounds at Disko Island are capable of handling over 600 eggs at once. The viewing stands are capable of holding 10,000 people comfortably in the twin-level balcony with theatre-style seating. The upper viewing level is used almost exclusively by tourists and other spectators who do not have a direct connection with someone on the sands. It has a thick, plexiglass screen between the occupants and the Hatching Grounds. The combination of elevation above the sands and the plexiglass screen act as a deterrent to any possible attack made from the upper viewing area.
Chapter 2: Earth's Second Weyr, Campbeltown
Pre-exodus Weyrleader: Harry Potter/Chekiath
Post-exodus Weyrleader: Brendan Caris/Acheth
The second most important Weyr to be established was originally called the Campbeltown Weyr. That name was ultimately replaced, as it became apparent that it was the key location for any government to go to in order to open talks with the dragons within their territories. Now it's named Spath's Weyr, after the dragon elder who helped bring humans and riders together. The Weyrleader insisted on honoring his friend by renaming the Weyr after Spath passed Between.
Editor's Note: The above paragraph was retained for historical continuity, though it is no longer true. The Weyrleader was planning on renaming Campbeltown to Spath's but, after the discovery of Pern, the first huge Weyr on Pern took that name.
After it was abandoned during the exodus to Pern, Campbeltown eventually became a Dragon Museum and Technology Center where people could come and learn about dragons and how they could be peaceful partners or dreadful enemies.
After many years, Campbeltown Weyr was reactivated upon the death of Lord James Mills, the man who had been so instrumental in the formation of Campbeltown Weyr. After The Weyrleader obtained permission from the British Government to reopen the Weyr, the entire area was leveled and a great, for England, mountain appeared in its place. The new Campbeltown Weyr was modeled on Spath's Weyr on Pern with the exception of any magical effects. It was renamed 'The Lord James Mills Memorial Weyr' on Feb 18, 2027, in honor of the man who had been instrumental in helping the Dragon Nation get started but continued to use 'Campbeltown Weyr' for common usage.
It was really surprising what a Royal Decree could accomplish … well, that and almost every dragon in the Dragon Nation! There was a new mountain in Scotland, in fact, it was the tenth highest in the country. The Weyrleader could easily have made it the highest but didn't feel the need to be quite that overbearing.
Ronan Clark had teams of dragons level the ground at Campbeltown in a broad circle, a mile and a half in diameter. Then he had them excavate the center mile diameter down to solid bedrock. The inside of this enormous hole was fused solid and lined bottom and sides with huge blocks of Basalt brought in from Pern. His goal, as set by The Weyrleader, was to create a miniature Spath's Weyr. It wouldn't have all the features and the ones it did duplicate wouldn't be near as large or in the exact same place, but it would give any visitor an idea of what Spath's Weyr was like without having to actually visit Pern.
The new mountain was exactly 4,000 ft above sea level. It even had a bright, rotating navigation beacon on top; there was no telescope, however. The interior was one-third scale as far as was possible. The lower levels were all full size, The spoke, ring corridors, and apartments were full size, there just weren't as many. The main orientation wasn't on true north, it was on magnetic north and the full-sized levels stopped at Level 11 which, in this Weyr, contained the Admin Level. The inner cavern was smaller at the top than at the bottom to give the casual observer the illusion of greater height. All the "Levels" above Admin were painted on the smooth rock surface to give the illusion from ground level that there were a full 20 Levels.
The main ground-level entrance to Level 1 is large enough that a dragon can fly through it, which is periodically demonstrated, but the usual method for dragons to enter the Weyr is to go Between directly. The ground-level entrance was completely turned over to the Weyr Museum and Technology center. The opposite side of Level 1 contains Conference rooms and classrooms offering set lectures and videos about Hot Rock Power Generators, Dragon Egg transportation, and other various publicly known dragon commercial ventures. Dragon Nation employees are available to answer business-related and generic tourist questions.
On Level 1, there is even a small, operational 5 dragon/ 10 human hospital, complete with a display dragon/rider apartment with its Hot Rock heated dragon bed. Usually, a bonded dragon/rider pair are stationed there during operating hours to answer questions and give the public an up-close view of a real dragon. It doubles as a place for those who were studying dragon physiology to go for training beyond basic. It showcases a few of the more spectacular items developed to help dragons. There were various display shops and food stalls, typical of Pern.
At no place on Level 1 is there any access to any higher levels except for the elevator. There was a small, shallow central lake surrounded by a large garden that takes up much of the ground level. Countries from all over the world were invited to send their horticulturists to plant gardens showing their country's floral wonders. Some displays required greenhouse enclosures to maintain the proper climate control for their contents.
The single elevator off Spoke 0 takes sightseers all the way to the top, at 3,600 ft. where there is an observation room. From there you can walk around the outside and get a bird's eye view of Scotland or walk around the inside and look at the Weyr from the top down. From the inner walkway, the artificial sun housing can be seen.
At regular intervals between the two walkways are restaurants offering varied cuisines and catered by outside sources. There are tables strategically located on raised platforms near each restaurant where a diner could enjoy their meal as well as the sights at the same time while leaving the walkways clear for those only looking.
Nowhere in the Weyr was magic obvious but it was there from the protective charms on the lake that allowed children to paddle in the water while keeping them safe, to the magical safeguards on the elevator and windows, to the runes that protected the Weyr itself from physical and magical attack both inside and out.
The basic structure had been finished first, the Goblins had moved in and finished off all the basic interior spaces, and human construction crews finished the fine details for Levels 1 and 11. There is a storage and emergency shelter area in a sub-basement, 600 ft below Level 1. One of the oddest items in the basement is a huge metal cage. The runes on the Weyr will automatically send anyone to the center of the cage that tried to apparate into the Weyr. It is monitored by Aurors and dragons at all times.
The Queen officially opened the new Weyr and went on a brief tour showing her and Lord Mills' family and retainers through all the areas, including the Memorial room dedicated to Lord James Mills. They were amazed when shown how to use the pensieve and relive actual memories. Needless to say, this room was on the Admin Level, not accessible to ordinary tourists. There was a more normal Memorial Room on Level 1 that had pages from the Book of Friends in display cases and a few audio and video recordings of Lord Mills in action at various points in his career.
After the magical world was revealed to the rest of the world on Dec 23, 2058, a small, limited-use Turbolift was installed so that non-magical family members could visit Riders. It became fully operational on Jan 1, 2062, and quickly became popular with the non-magical riders as well. The Turbolifts are hidden by a fidelius charm so that only those who know about them will be able to use them or even find them for that matter.
Chapter 3: Earth's Third Weyr, Maziang
The most unusual reserve is found in Tibet. There the wizards in control refuse to cull their herds, preferring instead to allow the beasts to live their lives naturally. It amazes this author's mind that they can have access to such valuable resources so close at hand and yet the dragon handlers of Tibet eke out a living scratching in the dirt.
Excerpt from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them by Newt Scamander. Published 1927.
Weyrleader: Lobsang/Jekrith (HT) Bronze
Senior Dragon: Nokrenth (UI)
Location: Tibet (#35)
Time Zone: UTC+6
The second human rider staffed Weyr came about at the one reserve that still maintained dragons and dragon handlers. The Tibetan Weyr at Maziang was once one of the poorest dragon reserves in the world. The dragon handlers on that reserve didn't cull their dragons, but fed and cared for them to the best of their abilities. When the dragon uprising began, they were largely spared any of the turmoil that the other reserves experienced. Today, Maziang is a thriving Weyr and is often considered the Dragon capital of Asia.
Closed after the exodus to Pern. Any nation without an in-country Weyr must deal with Dragon Isle for any services.
Chapter 4: Other Weyrs
Condron Weyr (#26):
Weyrleader: Rotating assignment.
Original co-Weyrleaders: Frank (Skip) Taylor/Menth and Katherine (Kat) Matthews/Lokith
Location: near Albuquerque, NM in the USA
Time Zone: UTC-7
Condron Weyr was the first manned Weyr on the American Continent. After the great migration to Pern, it was abandoned and later converted into a Dragon Museum and Technology Center by the US Government. The second Manned Weyr on Earth. Closed after the exodus to Pern. Any nation without an in-country Weyr must deal with Dragon Isle for any services.
Dragon Isle:
Weyrleader: Rotating assignment.
Location: In the middle of the Pacific Ocean
Time Zone: UTC-12
Weyrs are rotated in for 6 months with a three-month offset. This means that a new Weyr will replace the oldest one every 3 months. Official Dragon Nation Dragon Museum and Technology Center as well as the central location for all commercial access to the Dragon Nation. First mentioned on March 23, 2010, when The Weyrleader told the world about the discovery of Pern.
Dragon Isle became home to the world's most advanced medical facility. It was capable of caring for humans, elves, goblins, dragons, giants, centaurs, and all of the other myriad intelligent species now cohabitating on the planet. It was connected to a 250 bed (human or smaller) hospital that also had spaces for 100 dragons and 100 various other species. Finally, unbonded dragons learned that they no longer needed to "go between" if they were ill or hurt; they learned instead to go to Dragon Isle where their every need was accommodated. With the growing 'friendships' between unbonded dragons and non-magical people, a single Turbolift was added in early 2060 to allow those unable to apparate to visit their friends in the hospital.
Hogwarts School Weyr:
Weyrleader: Rotating assignment.
Location: Scotland
Time Zone: UTC 0
Senior Dragon: Timath, male Hungarian Horntail.
Set up as a training adjunct to the new classes on Dragon Physiology. There is a Flight of unbonded dragons assigned to guard the school as well as make themselves available to interact with the classes. Also helps with Dragon Services, Ltd. projects, such as Dragon Ambulances, etc.
Joensuu Weyr (#9):
Weyrleader: Ismo Sippola/Ydonth
Senior Dragon: Feynith
Location: Finland, dragons from the Irtysk River Weyr, Russia.
Time Zone: UTC+2
Earth Weyr was kept open after the exodus from Earth as the Dragon Nation Resort. Weyr helps with Dragon Services, Ltd. projects, such as Dragon Ambulances, etc.
Minnewanka Weyr:
Weyrleader: Arron Twosta/Curirth
Location: Canada
Time Zone: UTC-7
Site of the first Dragon Nation telescope, tasked with locating the actual location of Pern. Kept open after the exodus in the hope that Pern's star could be located. Eighth manned Weyr.
Sakushima Weyr (#32):
Weyrleader: None.
Location: Japan
Time Zone: UTC+11
After the exodus to Pern, the Japanese Government converted the site into a Dragon Museum in honor of the dragons who used to live and work there. Closed after the exodus to Pern. Any nation without an in-country Weyr must deal with Dragon Isle for any services.
Shetland Weyr (#2):
Weyrleader: Rotating
Location: the Island of Shetland, just south of Leebiten. Dragons relocated from Mousa Island because it is a World Heritage Site.
Time Zone: UTC+0
Closed after the exodus to Pern. Any nation without an in-country Weyr must deal with Dragon Isle for any services. The new location is the same as where the HMS Orkney was beached to "keep it safe".
Svartvatn Weyr (#32):
Weyrleader: Alfhild Gustavson/Nakth
Senior Dragon: Fith
Location: Norway
Time Zone: UTC+2
The fourth manned Weyr on Earth. Closed after the exodus to Pern. Any nation without an in-country Weyr must deal with Dragon Isle for any services.
Yelansy Weyr, New Russia:
Weyrleader: Rotating
Location: Approximately 54° 34' N 108° 41' E, NE of Yelansy, Russia, and over 240 Km by road from Irkutsk.
Time Zone: UTC+8
Newly opened Weyr after the exodus. Created to better help the Russian people recover from the "Dragon War".
Yokosuka City Weyr:
Weyrleader: Oshiro Akio/Sallinth
Location: Near Yokosuka, Japan
Time Zone: UTC+9
Created: April 5, 2059, after an Imperial Edict granted a circular area a mile in diameter to the Dragon Nation in the middle of Sagami Bay, west of Yokosuka, Japan.
The Weyr rises 1,200 ft from the sea in the typical conical form of a volcano, but was entirely created by Goblins using directed volcanic action and then finished off by Goblin Miners and Gringotts dragons. When finished, it contained an undersea entrance for dolphins; Level 1, fifty feet above high tide sea level, for the gang members, support staff, the kitchen, a small visitor center with conference room, and the all species hospital; Level 2 was designated for any overflow and visiting bonded and unbonded dragons; and Level 3 was reserved for the Wing of Dragonriders permanently assigned to the Weyr. Level 3 also held the, now standard, circular running track and exercise room and several VIP dragon apartments, one of which was permanently assigned for the use of The Weyrleader and his family. The Turbolift system was used exclusively to get around the Weyr and could be easily disabled, if required, by one of the magical riders assigned the task of Weyr Security.
The Weyr was commissioned after "The Dragons" gang had made an honored name for themselves under Oshiro Akio's direction by helping the City Police maintain order in the city. Upon completion, a ferry service was initiated between the Weyr and Yokosuka for those wishing to visit the Weyr officially and not having access by dragon. There was a floating dock at sea level where the arriving ferry could tie up and offload or load passengers. A set of wide shallow stairs cut into the side of the Weyr led to the one and only opening into the Weyr. This opening led through an easily defended tunnel into Level 1 of the Weyr. The Visitors' Center and conference room could be found closer to the entrance than to the main cavern of the Weyr.
A D5 Dragon Egg was permanently stationed at the Weyr to allow easy access for The Dragons going on or coming off patrol in the city. Later this was expanded by two Dragon-powered ambulances that helped provide emergency services to the surrounding area.
Chapter 5: Dragons and their effect on the World
How magical is a dragon? It's common knowledge that dragons are highly resistant to magical spells and their scales make them resistant to projectile spells. It wasn't until the 15th century and the invention of a pain-causing spell that dragons became more manageable. Even today it takes many wizards to subdue a dragon and bend them to our will. But being superior to dragons we have always managed to control the beasts.
The history of dragons is inexplicably entwined with muggle mythology. Despite our best efforts, dragons have been seen, and even rarely slain, by muggles. The famous Saint George, who the muggles venerate, was actually a medieval adventurer who accidentally killed a dragon when his horse broke into a full gallop while he fumbled with his lance. The poor chap catapulted himself when he struck the beast and he landed so hard he didn't remember what happened. It is unfortunate that the obliviate spell was unknown at that time, as he recovered his memory a month later and told his tale, thus starting the legend of Saint George.
Excerpt from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them by Newt Scamander. Published 1927.
Between. What it is, is unknown. Science tried to study Between for over a decade before coming to the realization that the technology simply didn't exist that allowed any study to take place. What we do know about Between is very simple. It's a place that isn't here. It's very cold and other than the cold, there appears to be no recordable or measurable phenomena that might let us understand it better. Finally, we do know it was an ability that came from the fire lizards of Pern.
The emergence of dragons onto the world stage triggered violent upheaval in several areas of the globe as some nations recognized the potential the dragons had to destroy their economies. Fortunately, such upheavals were few and strictly limited in scope. After the OPEC war, the nations of the world banded together with the dragons to address the problems of the affected nations.
Once culled a typical Hungarian Horntail produces over two hundred different products, including heartstrings, twenty-five to thirty gallons of dragons blood, four hundred pounds of prime gourmet dragon cutlets, and various other ingredients that are used in forty-two different potions. Tanned leather is converted into belts, bags, and shoes. The Ukrainian Ironbelly is additionally used for chest armor for Aurors worldwide.
Excerpt from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them by Newt Scamander. Published 1927.
It was suggested at one point by Queen Elizabeth that the dragons might be capable of providing scales in lieu of heartstrings and blood donations to help offset their loss to the wizarding world. The Weyrleader laughed and rejected the idea outright. The Prime Minister employed a bit more tact by asking the Queen if her family would have donated blood to Nazi Germany in 1940. Needless to say, it was the last time the subject ever came up.
Perhaps the greatest surprise from the emergence of dragons as an intelligent species was the simultaneous rise to power of the first Weyrleader. From humble beginnings, Harry Potter rose to the position of warrior, statesman, and protector of the nonhuman sentient species on the planet. As the dragons rose to become an economic powerhouse, he successfully guided the Weyrs to the position they enjoy today, as partners and equals in human society.
It had been noted that sometimes the dragons could actually set rocks burning. In fact, some of the earliest reserves employed people to banish such rocks. It wasn't until the mid 19th century and the creation of a fire suppression ward that the reserves were able to do away with such concerns. The fire suppression ward is the second most important ward used on reserves today.

Officially, the first commercial dragon-fired power generation station went online in early 1999 in the United Kingdom. Unlike the test station at Campbeltown, which had no public service, the new 500-megawatt plant was capable of powering ten thousand homes. It was the first of the truly clean power stations and it become a model upon which all future power stations were designed.
Officially, the first commercial power generation station for consumer use went online in early 1998. Unlike the test station at Campbeltown, which had no public service, it was the first of the truly clean power stations and it become a model upon which all future power stations were designed.
The first year of the Weyr and the decade that followed were some of the most hectic, nail-biting, and rewarding years of this author's life. Never has so much changed in such a short span of time. The rise of the Weyrs reshaped the world and the future of humanity, and it all started with a boy named Harry and Cheki, his dragon.
Chapter 6: Dragons in conflict with the World
Dragon fire is one of the most dangerous fires known to wizardkind. In fact, the natural dragon fire was the model for the spell development of Fiendfyre. It is said that dragons have a great degree of control over their fire, but there is no proof to back up that myth.
Excerpt from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them by Newt Scamander. Published 1927.
While Pern lore lends credence to the idea, Wing ranks and the discipline exhibited by the Weyrs are the real reason why so many felt the Weyrs were militaristic in nature. In fact, numerous researchers have shown otherwise, but popular opinion is hard to fight. Even when the Weyr was thrown open in 2002 to both BBC and National Geographic documenters, the opinion persisted. It's only when you look at the record and note that the Weyr has had just three military encounters in the last twenty-five years that one realizes the truth. Three encounters out of nearly thirty diplomatic crises are not the mark of a militaristic nation.
One of the principal tenets of the Weyrleader and dragons everywhere was that they were not bound by nationalistic priorities. The Weyrs were an independent entity and not obliged to follow the orders of any national government. This policy was tested on several occasions by various governments, and on more than one occasion, forced a Weyr to relocate to avoid conflict.
Originally, it was planned that the existence of dragons would be used as a way of diverting media attention from the British Military efforts to take back control of the Ministry, but those plans were not used. The first official announcement of dragons and their capabilities came in early 1996 when the Weyrleader and his dragon addressed a special assembly of Parliament at the invitation of the Queen.
The rise of the Weyr to a position of power during the early part of the twenty-first century has been described by some experts as a confluence of economic and technological progress. While these experts might be correct in their views, they have forgotten that there was one single dominant force driving the Weyrs to the world stage. The Weyrleader and his dragon are the sole reason behind their rise to prominence and no confluence can change that fact.
I don't believe there are aliens. I believe there are really different people.
-Orson Scott Card
The Dragon War, the aftermath...
The war was short and devastating for the Russians and Saudis. The Weyrs had proof they only reacted after an attack by the Russians and the Saudis, unfortunately, the proof wasn't accepted immediately by everyone due to the magnitude of the Weyr's response.
After the air battle, it was revealed that nearly twenty thousand dragons attacked Russia. In the first ten minutes, 90% of Russia's northern fleet was destroyed by the Weyr using those ships as missiles. Two wings of unbonded dragons dropped a fully manned and operational Kuznetsov-class Aircraft Carrier on the Kremlin from altitude. The gloves were off and thousands were killed in attacks that saw ships being dropped on air bases and military installations around the country.
When they finally ran out of ships, they resorted to making flaming passes on any military targets of opportunity, tying up traffic as roads and rail were disrupted.
The counter-attack on Saudi Arabia wiped out all of the Saudi military infrastructures, including vehicles, buildings, airfields, and any munitions they could get to. In keeping with their desire to do no more harm to people than necessary, they attacked in such a way that they were safe at all times but they would leave one or more avenues of retreat open for anyone wishing to preserve their life rather than attack dragons.
Less than a day passed before the Russian Minister of Agriculture offered up Russia's unconditional surrender. Russia's surrender shocked the world and made a lot of people wary of the Weyr. There was no one left in a position in Saudi Arabia to offer a surrender, unconditional or otherwise.
Fortunately for the Russians and the Saudis, the Dragon Nation wasn't interested in accepting surrender from anyone; they just wanted to be left in peace. Immediately after hostilities ceased, simply because there were no further military targets to attack, the dragons switched their activities to that of disaster relief. They "dragon-lifted" tons of previously created disaster relief kits to every area in the two countries hit by combat. The day after the battle, all the relief kits had been delivered, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent were in place aiding the survivors, and the Dragon Nation had virtually disappeared … as if they had never even existed on the face of the planet.
The Dragon Nation took a note from the United States playbook after WWII and dug in to help the two countries it had demolished recover. They had even gone so far as to build, entirely from their own resources, a 3,500 MWe hot rock power station in Russia and a 1,000 MWe power station in Saudi Arabia to help power their recoveries. After that, they stayed strictly hands-off. The Dragon Nation had been attacked, they retaliated by knocking out the military might of the attacking nation, they then helped with emergency relief for the shattered population and started them on the road to financial recovery. They never tried to impose any ideology or restrictions on the two countries. Consequently, the average civilian in each of the conquered countries felt far friendlier towards the Dragon Nation than they did towards their own original, now mostly non-existent, governments.
Effects of Conflict on Dragons:
An aspect of the Dragon War that has never before been publicized was the impact on the dragons and their riders. Dragons were created to help humans. They were honest and open to a fault, regardless of how they were treated before and after "The Age of Beasts". Through their bond with their dragon, riders came to embrace that philosophy as well, some more or less than the dragons themselves. The human component of the bond was familiar with how duplicitous humans could be and how callous towards another's plight. Before The Weyrleader forced them into battle, no post-awakening dragon would have ever even dreamed of harming any human, even those trying to harm them. Now, they had just been involved in a war where they had been required to not only be aware of, but involved in, the destruction of human life. The most crucial point that allowed the dragons sane, was the promise from The Weyrleader to never involve them in such a war, ever again. Over the years, he has been able to keep that promise.
For many years after, The Weyrleader retained the services of first a Board Certified Psychiatrist from Earth and later from rider trained physicians specializing in Psychiatry. The sessions, as explained to me, were odd in the extreme for the doctor trying to help. Normally, even with dissociative disorders, a psychiatrist only worked with a single physical patient. Any psychiatrist that worked with The Weyrleader had to come to grips with the fact that, when in any session, The Weyrleader would open himself up to all dragons and, through their bonded dragon, all riders currently on the planet with him. While it may have appeared outwardly that a session was for The Weyrleader, it was actually helping the entire Dragon Nation.
There have been conflicts that have involved dragons, but always in a covert manner. The dragons were used to safely capture suspected individuals who were then humanely interrogated to determine their guilt or innocence. If guilty, their chain of command was determined and the illegal organization was uprooted and destroyed by human agencies with as little dragon involvement as possible. The most notable of these conflicts was Operation East Africa.
During said operation, the Dragon Nation removed initially the country of Somalia and eventually the entire continent of Africa from the business of piracy. The upside for the dragons was that they didn't destroy, they helped to build and protect, which was what they had been designed to do. They worked with their riders to terrify those guilty of attempting to subvert the region so they would never return. Dragons enjoy a good joke, and they looked at scaring someone so bad they lose bodily functions to be the height of humor. But they didn't just scare bad people, they helped the natives of the area rebuild their lives, which helped the dragons recover from their war even more.
The evacuation of Earth
In the months leading up to the Weyr's evacuation of Earth, security concerns were addressed simply by maintaining the war footing security that ensured none of the Weyrs could even be successfully approached. If no one got close enough to see more than the hollow buildings, then no one would know that everything was being removed. Since there were adequate transportation and storage facilities between the two planets, nothing was to be left behind, even the smallest personal possession. In fact, there was a gradual upswing of personal purchases against future needs until interplanetary trade could be normalized.
After the evacuation, the question of Rider Candidate searches was still an issue for a while. Until the population of Pern grew enough to provide sufficient candidates, search would still have to be conducted on Earth. This was accomplished both covertly and overtly. Every large grouping of appropriately aged potential candidates was quietly searched by an invisible dragon/rider team. If a potential rider was discovered, then, and only then, was the government openly approached about the candidate(s). By then there wasn't a significant government on Earth that wanted to appear to be anti-dragon, so there were very few problems. When there was any question about the local government, suitable rider candidates and their parents were approached directly and covertly. If they agreed, the entire family and sometimes greatly extended family were offered resettlement on Pern for their safety.
The official liaisons from various Earth governments to the Dragon Nation were offered permanent positions with the dragons, either on Earth or on Pern helping with the growing body of problems there. In every case they accepted and, if they wanted to stay on Earth, they and their families were given round-the-clock protection by a force of unbonded dragons lead by at least one dragon/rider pair. Most of them initially opted to stay living where they were but took advantage of the extra mobility their "Security Detail" offered to commute quickly wherever they needed to go, including to Dragon Isle when necessary.
Dragon Isle quickly became "The Place To Go" if you could come up with even the tiniest excuse. The executive offices and suites were among the most luxurious in the world and the miles of new, artificial beaches provided for after-hours recreation. The Goblins eventually managed to create a wide artificial reef around the entire island that kept even the worst of ocean storms from doing much damage and it was specifically designed to keep any sea life greater than about 3 feet long away from the island while allowing free access to the island's harbor. Eventually, someone even realized lighthouses were needed, so four automated lighthouses were constructed marking the entrance to the harbor and the limits of the artificial reef.
With all Weyrs removed from national borders, international relationships with the dragons and riders settled down to a more or less amicable agreement to accept what the dragons offered in exchange for those items that were not yet available on Pern. Dragons finally became a common sight in the skies of Earth. It probably helped their visibility that they were usually limited to below 2,500 feet altitude in the United States and similar altitudes in other countries. The dragons agreed to this as a courtesy to the governments so they didn't have to change their VFR (Visual Flight Rules) regulations. Eventually, a new "rule" was penned to cover dragons. Regardless of weather conditions, they were expected to fly at or below 2,500 feet and keep a sharp lookout for any other traffic at all times. Dragons straight-flying emergency "containers", such as ambulance pods, were required to fly at exactly 4,000 feet if on a course from 0 to 179 degrees and exactly 5,000 feet if on a course from 180 to 359 degrees. In all cases, they were to be discouraged from startling pilots of any aircraft … no matter how funny the dragons thought it to be.
Some of the original Weyrs within national boundaries were eventually reopened to serve as museums and training centers for those interested in learning about dragons and the other "newly discovered" species on Earth. When he learned that Campbeltown was to be reopened as one such museum, the Weyrleader initially wanted Campbeltown to be renamed Spath's in honor of the oldest known intelligent dragon who was so central to the history of dragon-kind. Instead, New Campbeltown Weyr eventually became a living monument to the man who had originally made the Dragon Nation possible on Earth, Lord James Mills.
Chapter 7: Earth's Dragons, A Brief History
There was a planet, far from Earth that had been colonized before it was realized that there was a periodic threat to all planetary life that was due to attack soon. The new colonists spread out in their new home and built a great city, using the materials from the great ships they had arrived in.
It wasn't until they had become settled in their new ways that disaster struck. First, the huge dormant volcano they had built their new city, Landing, next to erupted. In the panic to get away from the volcanic ash and lava, much was lost, but an even deadlier threat was soon to make itself known.
While they were still escaping from the newly active volcano, Thread attacked from the skies. In outer space, it was innumerable balls of frozen matter. Once the ice balls entered the planet's atmosphere, the ice quickly melted and long grey streamers emerged. It looked like the thread used in sewing, hence the name. This Thread, however, was inimical to any form of life. Plant or animal, thread devoured it in seconds until nothing was left, not even bones.
With this new threat, the colonists quickly moved to some recently discovered caverns on the northern continent and started research to bio-engineer a life form that could attack and destroy Thread. Thus were the origins of Dragons.
The race was intentionally engineered to fight Thread, a deadly mycorrhizoid spore that devours all organic matter that it touches, after it first caught the human colonists on Pern unawares, with devastating results. Geneticist Kitti Ping Yung designed the dragons by manipulating the genetic code of the indigenous fire-lizards that had been acquired as pets by the colonists. The dragons were named after their resemblance to European dragons from the legends of old Earth. Later genetic manipulation by Ping's granddaughter, Wind Blossom, also resulted in the watch-whers, ungainly, nocturnal creatures who bore a slight resemblance to dragons. During the Third Pass, the watch-whers were found to be more useful than commonly thought. On Pern, time is measured in "Turns", or years, and "Passes", which are about fifty Turns long and occur when a planet named the "Red Star" is close enough to Pern for Thread to traverse space between the Red Star and Pern. Thread only falls during Passes. Periods between Passes, when the Red Star's orbit takes it away from Pern, are referred to as "Intervals"; usually lasting about two hundred Turns.
From Spath:
"Long ago, across uncounted turns, we lived on a world that had a terrible enemy. The wise men of that world didn't understand it until it was too late. It wasn't until the menace was upon them that they realized how poorly prepared they were to handle this foe.
"We were created to help men combat that enemy and for many turns, we did just that. Each dragon had a rider and together they were a bonded pair, living one for the other. The men of that world honored us and we honored them. We protected them and they helped care for us. We were partners and with our human riders we were the Dragon Riders that protected Pern."
Spath looks up again, his old gaze taking in the rest of the dragons. "There was no greater force than the love between dragon and rider.
"The enemy attacked in falls lasting 50 turns or more and then there would be an interval lasting even longer where no thread spun out. During the interval, man would nurture and protect the dragons and we would be safe until needed again.
"Then some twenty turns before the pass would begin, the queens would rise and dragons would grow in number. Great clutches would be laid and the Weyrs continued to prosper, as all Pern prepared itself for the coming pass.
"During one such turn, a great queen met a tragic fate. Heavy with egg, an accident befell her rider. She was a young queen and her anguish at losing her rider cannot be described. Like so many of our kind, she decided to leave by taking the endless jump Between.
Spath paused and the dragons in the bowl keened. As one, they honored that queen by lowering their heads to the ground. She was their ultimate ancestor.
Sensing the mood, Harry also bowed his head. In his mind, he could see the huge golden queen, her belly bulging with eggs. He could hear her bellow, her anguish echoed across a volcanic bowl, much like this one, and then she leapt aloft and winked out of existence.
He was struck by the shocked looked on the faces of the people who watched the queen realize her rider was forever gone.
"Sidraneth was her name," continued Spath. "She thought she was going to the great sleep. Instead, she came here, to the homeworld of our creators, in a time many turns ago. She is the mother of our kind on this world."
Harry sat up suddenly. He had picked up an image of a badly exhausted golden dragon appearing from Between over a plain covered with bison and wooly mammoths.
"She went into the past?" exclaimed Harry out loud. "Our past?" He was no expert, but even he knew the wooly mammoth existed many thousands of years ago. That meant that she had come across space and time, and from a planet man wouldn't even find for hundreds, if not thousands of years in the future!
Harry stared at Spath who rumbled with the dragon version of laughter.
"Our creators gave us a great many abilities, young Rider," Spath replied. "Sidraneth thought she was jumping to die. Instead, she came here and became the mother of our race. She was badly sickened by the jump and when she recovered, she was too heavy with egg to try again. Once she laid her eggs, she knew that, without man, she would have to care for her offspring."
"It was a crime against our creation, for we were not meant to be without riders. For countless turns, we existed, changing from what we were. And in those turns, we lost ourselves. But locked within each of us was the memory of what we had been and what we could be again."
Our creators gave us a great many abilities. Sidraneth thought she was jumping to die. Instead, she came to Earth, some 125,000 to 11,000 years ago when Mammoths roamed freely and became the mother of our race. She was badly sickened by the jump and when she recovered, she was too heavy with egg to try again. Once she laid her eggs, she knew that, without man, she would have to care for her offspring.
It was a crime against our creation, for we were not meant to be without riders. For countless turns, we existed, changing from what we were. And in those turns, we lost ourselves. But locked within each of us was the memory of what we had been and what we could be again.
-oooOOOooo-
Initially, dragons came in five breeds. How and why they expanded to 10 after arriving on Earth is unknown, but it appears that they are now starting to recombine into the original 5 breeds, at least for the bonded dragons.
From Spath, an intimate view:
"I'm curious about that first queen and where you came from, Spath," said Remus Lupin. "The past is something of a passion of mine and if you would explain it to me, I'll record the information so that we can explain it to others who come to the Weyr."
"Sit, Wolf, and I will tell you as much as I remember," Spath said.
Remus took a seat on the rocks and was grateful for the warmth provided by the nearby hot springs.
"When we were created, we were changed from what we had been into something new. Our world had evolved to deal with a deadly enemy and we were able to live our lives, simple and free. Then man came to our world.
"For a time, he prospered. But then thread spun out again as it was wont to do and Man was in trouble. The great ships in the skies, what we called the Dawn Sisters, had no way of contacting the homeworld. Even if they could have, it would have taken too long for help to arrive."
As the dragon spoke, Remus found himself drawn into the imagery, almost like a pensieve memory. Suddenly, he found himself in the lower section of a great bowl. It looked like it was from an ancient volcano long extinct.
Around him, people and dragons worked and talked. He looked up and was surprised to see a sun that didn't quite look right. It wasn't the usual size or color. It was close but different enough for him to notice it.
"Ho! Fara!" shouted a voice.
He turned to see a man wave and a young, handsome woman smile in return, then she handed some material to another woman before turning to meet the caller. She was of medium height, slim of build with a bright smile. Remus knew just by looking that here was a woman who enjoyed life.
Remus felt drawn to follow her.
"Fara, have you spoken to H'lok about the weyrlings yet? He was interested in finding out what you thought about young Juni and Moranth."
"I spoke to him this morn before he took the senior weyrlings off for firestone practice. I agree. Moranth needs another month before she rises for the first time," Fara replied.
The man nodded and glanced up towards the star stones at the edge of the bowl. "Good. According to the last sighting, fall is due to begin in two turns. We're going to need the infusion of dragons that Moranth will bring."
Fara smirked. "And the fact that you might get to break in another Queen's Rider will be a nice wherry feather in your cap, M'Lan."
He chuckled and leered at her. "You didn't complain at the time, Fara, nor any time afterwards."
A wherry screamed and they both turned to watch Sidraneth take down her fourth wherry of the morning.
M'Lan eyed the gravid queen in admiration. "She's efficient and still flying well. I hear the lower caverns are wagering 80 or more eggs from her laying."
Fara nodded and eyed her dragon affectionately. The large queen was close to her time to clutch and her belly bulged with eggs.
A scream ripped through the air and both humans looked up in alarm. A bronze was wheeling around the bowl in obvious distress. One wing smoked ominously and the rider seemed to be badly injured but still able to cling to his dragon.
"The Weyrling practice! There must have had an accident!" she gasped, then turned and ran for her Weyrhealer kit.
The injured bronze bellowed in pain again and there was a visible ripping along its wing sails as the wing came apart. Gravely injured, the dragon lost all lift and plunged to the ground, right where Fara was standing with her kit. She never had a chance, it was so sudden.
All sound in the Weyr ceased and every eye turned to the sight.
Sidraneth, Fara's queen, bellowed in anguish and the entire Weyr's dragon population began to keen, as the gold dragon sprang aloft and blinked from existence.
Remus suddenly found himself sitting on the stones, staring at Spath, his face streaked with tears. That poor woman, he thought. To die so tragically. Here one moment, gone the next.
"A dragon cannot live without its rider, Wolf," Spath said quietly in his mind. "Sidraneth thought she was jumping into the long silent sleep of death. Instead, she came here."
Remus stood and he bowed to the ancient dragon. "You have honored me with your tale, but for me to hear more at this point would be too much. I will write this history up for all to read, and when I am done, if you will permit, we will continue with your tale?"
Spath nodded. "It will be as you say, Wolf."
From Spath:
Our history is marked by important points. Sidraneth's arrival and laying was a major point, another was her passing. Behold the sundering that split us into different kinds.
In a caldera, which might have been Disko there were thousands of dragons present. A dragon has the ability to control how many eggs were laid and Sidraneth had ordered the dragons to lay as many as possible to increase their chances of survival.
They had to lay many eggs and there had been a high incidence of eggs that never hatched. Even with greens and golds laying, the dragons were hard-pressed to restore their numbers. Part of the reason stemmed from the fact that they were all related. Even with little understanding of genetics, it is understood that brother doesn't marry sister.
A great Golden Queen stepped from the mouth of the cave. She is a large dragon, easily topping seventy feet or more.
The Queen stretched her neck and started to keen loudly. Her cry was picked up by the others around the bowl.
Sidraneth had passed Between for the last time.
A mournful keening arose in the Weyr that continued for several minutes, then a large bronze nearly as big as the queen stood and bellowed. Again the dragons in the bowl fell silent.
He turned away from the queen and started to walk away. As he did, others fell in line behind him.
"Granth," called the Queen, "where are you going?"
Granth turned to the Queen. "Sidraneth is no more. She can no longer lead us and this place is unsuitable for our kind. For more turns than I can count she has held us here, but no longer. I and my mate will find ourselves a new place to make a Weyr."
"But Sidraneth's orders!" protested the Queen.
"Naranth, every turn we go further and further to find food beasts while our Weyr grows colder. The herds are moving away from the cold and I will lead my clan towards the warmth," Granth said, then he turned again and took wing. Several hundred dragons joined him as they turned south and flew away from the bowl.
Naranth stood shocked. She never thought that Granth was doing anything more than just mouthing off. Her shock deepened as other clans took wing and fled the original Weyr. She bowed her head in pain and when she looked up again, barely a thousand dragons remained of Sidraneth's kin.
"Granth was right. We must find a place with more food," Naranth said. "I had hoped we would stay together, but the bond we had with Sidraneth is gone. Now we are truly on our own."
Sidraneth had managed to save dragon kind but she was the glue that held them together. Once she had passed, the dragons began to split up into the clans that would evolve into the different breeds that were known today.
The great sundering split us into groups and, over time, contact between groups grew less and less. We looked at those from another clan as outsiders and were wary of them. Sidraneth saved us, but she could not prevent us from breaking apart.
-oooOOOooo-
Small samples of dragon blood were taken for analysis. Blood samples from dragons were most astonishing. The cobalt levels in the blood account for the distinct blue tinge it has. It was the first clear indication of the non-terrestrial origin of the dragons. They also have a higher amount of boron in their blood chemistry than normal.
The first results of DNA sequencing, though preliminary, gives every indication that the story of the dragons jumping from another world to our own has been validated. The genetic make-up of our dragons is clearly alien in origin, and yet there are segments of DNA that look like they have been spliced in from terrestrial sources. In other words, dragon DNA looks exactly like what we'd expect if humans took an alien species and changed it to suit their own needs.
From Dronth:
A dragon is standing on the very edge of an ancient caldera. It was overgrown with huge conifers and giant oaks, but still visible as a volcanic bowl from this high perch. Around the bowl were groups of dragons.
They were broken down by breed, although no one breed had reached their modern form yet.
'Sidraneth is but a fading memory now,' Dronth said. 'There have been uncounted turns upon turns since then.
'This is the last Weyr. In just a short while the Weyr will end and the time of the beasts begin.
The dragons before him were behaving more like mindless beasts than like the gentle giants he knew of. They were behaving like the dragons he had grown up with - dangerous and barely controlled.
'DOES ANYONE HEAR ME?' shouted a voice.
A large bronze-colored Horntail was perched on a ledge overlooking the Weyr.
'Mroth, elder and the last dragon in the world who can speak,' Dronth said sadly. 'For turns, Mroth has watched as dragons spoke less and less. Some were hatched that never said a word. He worried and tried talking to them. He wept in anguish as his people slipped into the role of beasts.
"We needed our riders to tie us to our intelligence. Without them, we could not hold onto it. Poor Mroth is of my line, mated with what he considered a mindless female. Throughout most of his life, he has lived alone, surrounded by a constant reminder of what he was missing. One of my ancestors heard his pleas, but could not reply and barely understood the words. I didn't understand the words, or this memory until the Weyrleader woke us up."
'ANYONE, PLEASE!' bellowed Mroth.
Not a single dragon of the many thousands visible even looked at him.
Mroth bellowed an anguished call and leapt into the sky, then he vanished from view.
'Even a dragon can die from loneliness. The silence is now complete.'
Mroth had jumped Between to escape the silence. And with him went the last intelligent dragon on the planet. He knew they were still intelligent, but now they were locked in their minds and driven more by instinct than by intellect.
Chapter 8: Magic Revealed to the world
Before he died, Albus Dumbledore knew that it was only a matter of time before the mundane world found out about the magical. He was attempting to determine a safe way for the two worlds to be brought together but never finished his plan before his untimely passing.
Arthur Weasley found Albus' notes and revealed them to the new mundane head of the Ministry of Magic. He was then tasked to fill in the missing pieces and make "Dumbledore's Plan" an accomplished fact. Arthur did just that and the highlights of those years are listed below. Each date will be followed by the event which revealed a little more magic to the world.

Chapter 10: A New World Order
Dragons are now, as of the year 2210, considered an acknowledged part of life on Earth and a necessary part of life on Pern, even with Thread totally eradicated. The number of dragons is being carefully monitored by the dragons themselves. Somehow they know when one is soon to pass and some years a single dragon egg will appear on the sands. No one tells them who or when or how, they just make sure the total number of dragons stays constant at the numbers that our first Weyrleader, Harry Potter, had finally set. It seems to be working out.
Earth still has a criminal element, but they are much reduced in status and tend to hide much better than their ancestors. One of the big things they seem to have learned is to NEVER attack anyone even remotely associated with dragons. The result is always catastrophic for anyone doing so.
Earth nations now more closely adhered to continental boundaries rather than the old national boundaries. The North American Union and the European Union, which included the old UK and Russia, are the economic powerhouses, while the Asian Union is a close third. Even the other continents are flourishing. Africa, once thought to be one of the poorest of continents is now almost neck and neck with Asia and the others were not far behind. Universal free basic education and the cheap transportation of food anywhere on the Earth or Pern helped fuel the growth. Now there are no more ignorant, malnourished poor. Everyone has a truly equal chance. Some of the World's most recent innovations have come out of the African Union.
There are 600 dragonrider Weyrs scattered all over the surface of the Earth, almost all in mountainous regions, not suitable for other development. The Weyr's properties encompassed thousands of acres so they have sufficient land to cultivate their main food crops, cattle, pigs, and other high protein animals. The Weyrs of Pern have shrunk over time as most of their inhabitants slowly left to repopulate the Earth Weyrs where they were needed more. Spath's Weyr stands as a colossal monument to the abilities of dragons, but it is almost a ghost town now with a permanent population of only 600 Dragonriders and support personnel.
