Chapter 5, Science Project
"Fun fact about voodoo, Larry; can't conjure a thing for myself." - Dr. Facilier
Fascienne sat at Weird Science class next to Valerie. The class used to be taught by Yen Sid. Until her father discovered the Anti Heroes Club. He disbarred the club and replaced Yen Sid with Varian. Valerie is in the top of this class obviously. Not because she's the teacher's daughter; but because she really loves science. Most of the students believe she was only passing because her father will automatically pass her. Some even ask her for homework or test answers. Valerie guessed that's one of the reasons the students bully her. It's because she doesn't help them cheat. Fascienne was making a voodoo string doll while listening to Varian talk about alchemy and elements. Valerie sat not really listening, knowing that her father was going to go over the lesson with her at home.
"Everyone get into a group of two, three, or four. For this assignment you are all going to make a science project. It can be anything, as long as it involves science." Varian said. Fascienne stayed seated next to Valerie. Valerie noticed a girl sitting by herself. She was wearing a red leather jacket, black distressed leggings, and brown combat boots. She had on yellow fingerless gloves, red thick-rimmed glasses, and her long blonde hair was tied in a red ribbon. Fascienne instantly recognized her. It was Gaston's daughter Giselle LeGume. Giselle was an odd one in her family. She never talked to anyone because her head was always stuck in a book. Even if students were talking in the halls, or being loud in a classroom nothing ever seemed to break her concentration on a book.
"Should we invite her?" Asked Valerie.
"If you want." Answered Fascienne. Valerie called the girl in red over.
"Thanks guys, people here think I'm odd. I'm Giselle." She said,
"Odd is good. Fia likes to make creepy dolls and of course I'm a total science geek. I'm Valerie by the way." She said.
Giselle smiled at that. "I like to read. Even though most of the books here are incomplete." Nearly all the books on the Isle were damaged or had missing pages.
"Must be annoying finding a book that has all its pages." Valerie said.
"It is. Most of them don't. I keep a list of books that I have read, so when I go to Auradon I can read the full story."
"I'm sure that dream will come true." Valerie said.
"I hope it does." Giselle smiled.
"So what are we going to do about this project?" Fascienne said.
"We already have something. Remember the beach?" Asked Valerie.
"You said you were going to collect samples." Fascienne answered.
"Exactly. I'm going to draw the microorganisms I find under the microscope. It's a perfect idea. Hidden underwater life forms."
"If you say it's a good idea." Fascienne said.
"That sounds cool." Giselle said.
"It really is! I drew some really interesting microorganisms I found before. I wonder if they have mutated in some way." Valerie said.
"Mutated?" Asked Giselle.
"You know, like adaptation. What makes them adjust so they can survive in such bad waters?" Valerie said.
"You're asking this when we literally live off of rotting food." Fascienne said.
"Adaptation Fia, our bodies have gotten used to the bad food. Just like how these hidden microbes are used to the polluted ocean."
"No need for a lecture Val." Fascienne said. Bells rang across Dragon Hall. It was time for the next class.
"Meet us at the beach after school Giselle." Valerie said.
"Okay." She said.
