Chapter 31: Guilty
Killian rubbed his eyes as the light of the morning sun shown through the windows and onto his face, he was still quite tired, they had stayed up late at the office las night, just trying to piece everything together, but nothing bad much sense to them. Turning over to throw his arm over his wife he realized the spot next to him was empty.
"Emma?" Killian questioned sitting up in bed and stretching, but that was when he heard her, the sounds of retching coming from the bathroom.
Getting up to go look and make sure his wife was alright when he walked into the bathroom, Emma was already cleaning herself up.
"You alright, love?"
Whipping her mouth she nodded and looked into the sink, "Must just be the last of that stomach bug I guess."
"Are you sure? You don't have to come with us today, you can stay here and relax." He didn't like to see her like this, he hated to see her sick, even in the Enchanted Forest, he remembered one time when Emma had come down with this awful sickness that was going around the entire realm, many died from it, thousands, kids even, Emma was one of the lucky ones to survive from it.
Emma shook her head, "No it's fine, come on, Henrys going over to Grace's for the day and we need to go each Archies office more."
She walked out of the room, she didn't care how she felt, she was going to prove who was behind this murder.
Killian sighed, he just wanted her to rest, and how he wished she wasn't so stubborn, "Aye, love, let's go then." He wasn't going to argue, he knew Emma was going to do what she wanted to and wouldn't listen anyway.
That morning Ruby and Jefferson decided that it would be a good time to have a little breakfast date, even if it was just breakfast.
"I'm glad you finally took me up on that date," Joked Jefferson.
Ruby smiled, "Well, some bad things have been happening ever since the curse broke and I thought that maybe this would be something good to take my mind off of everything."
"Ah, so you're only using me as a distraction then," Jefferson joked.
"Oh no! That's not how I meant it...what I meant was..." Jefferson stopped her.
"I know what you mean, I was only joking," He chuckled and took her hand, he could tell she was stressed, and he understood. "If anything can take your mind off of whatever's going on, I'm glad it's me."
Ruby smiled, he actually understood and she was thankful for that, he was really the only thing that was keeping her sane nowadays. "Maybe next day, we'll go somewhere a little more romantic then Grannys," Ruby said, "Just not on a full moon."
Jefferson laughed, "I agree, wolfy."
Wolfy? For some strange reason, Jefferson was the only person who could call her that and she wouldn't get offended on him, it sounded cute.
David, Snow, Killian and even Emma all met at Archies' office, to try and see if they could find anything there.
David sighed, "Regina's file...it's empty," He said as he took it out of the cabinet where Archie kept all of his patients' records.
"So she did it, she killed the kindest soul in this town, a man who only cared about helping!" Snow exclaimed as she got up from where she was sitting.
Emma was sitting down on the couch next to Killian, trying to relax and not throw up again. The last few days she was feeling better but then this morning everything came back, and she didn't understand. "I promise, we'll find whoever really did this," Emma said, she assumed her vomiting was just from stress, from going back to a world she no longer knew and having a really good friend die just the day before.
"Isn't it time you admit we already have?" David said he didn't believe it could be anybody else, "Regina had a fight with Archie, Ruby saw her outside the other night and now her file is empty, that's...that's a lot of evidence."
"Maybe that's the point," Emma said.
"What do you mean, love?" Questioned Killian as he placed his arm on top of the couch.
"Well it's usually hard to find evidence, this has been way too easy unless someone wants us to find evidence," Emma explained, usually a murder case wouldn't be this easy, but everything so far is leading right to Regina, but she knew in her gut that she wasn't the murderer.
"Well it wouldn't be the first time that happened in this town," Snow said, pointing out the fact that she was framed not long ago about the murder of Kathrine, everything pointed in her direction, but in the end, it wasn't her.
"Who would want to frame her?" David questioned.
"That's a long list mate, present company included," Killian said raising his hook.
"Yeah, but there's only one name on that list that would resort to killing to get what they want," Emma pointed out as everybody looked at one another, that was true, out of everybody who wanted to get revenge on Regina only one person throughout the entire town would actually resort to killing somebody.
Mr. Gold aka Rumpelstiltskin was in his shop, no doubt with Belle who had seemed to have brought them both lunch for them to enjoy together, but of course, that was interrupted by the Jones/Nolen family walking in.
"Ah, nothing warms the heart more than a family reunited," Gold said as he walked around the counter.
"We know you killed him," Emma said abruptly, cutting to the chase.
That caught Gold by surprise, "And I can see what you get from your father," He said knowing Charming wouldn't hold back anything.
Belle could hear them, did her Rumple really kill somebody? "Someone's dead?"
"Aye love, , the cricket," Killian told her.
"Why on earth would you think I had anything to do with that?" Gold questioned, he was sure he didn't kill anybody and he would remember if he did.
"Because all the evidence points to Regina," Emma said, and of course it sounded weird when it came out,
Belle stepped in, "And she's not possibly capable of doing something so vile?" She said sarcastically.
"It's a frame job," Emma explained.
"It wouldn't be the first time you sent somebody to try and hurt her," Snow stepped up and said, remembering the times Rumple tried to get multiple people to hurt or kill Regina.
"Glad your memories still intact, dearie, but this time, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to disappoint you," Rumple said, "It wasn't me."
"Why should we believe you, crocodile?" Killian questioned.
"Because I can prove it, ask the witness," Rumple stated.
The witness, the only witness there was, was Pongo, which you can't really ask a dog unless you know how to speak dog.
"The only witness there was, was Pongo, and we can't ask him what he saw," Emma stated.
Rumple hummed, "That's not strictly true, is it?"
Henry was spending the morning with Grace, Jeffersons' daughter, they had really gotten to know each other the past week that his parents were gone, she felt like she was a good friend, a friend he could tell anything to.
"So what's it like, your dad and Ruby?" Henry questioned, just trying to start a conversation.
Grace thought about it, how did she feel about it? "Well, I don't know a lot about Ruby so far, but she seems nice, and my dad has been happier since they've been talking," She said, she truly didn't know much about Ruby, probably because her father didn't bring her over really, the only time she sees her is when they go to Grannys.
"Well I know Ruby really well, she's really nice, she would do anything for anybody," Henry told her, "She pretty much part of my family."
"That's good, I'm sure with time, me and Ruby will become more close," Grace said.
"And think, you'll be the only one at school that will be able to say your stepmom is a wolf," Henry laughed, thinking he was being funny.
Grace laughed along with him, really? Could Ruby possibly be her stepmom someday? Her father hadn't been with another woman ever since her mother died, she wasn't sure exactly how she felt about it. "Yeah, that could be cool."
David had left to go and get Pongo, even if everybody in the room thought it was a little strange, but it was Rumplestiltskin they were dealing with, this man was full of mysteries.
"Hey, good boy, good boy," Rumple said as he patted the dog, calming him.
Belle chuckled "I, uh, I didn't know you were such a dog person."
"Well, a long time ago, in another life, I got to know a sheepdog or two," Rumple said admitting to his past life as a farmer, the town coward, the man who he once was before the dark and heartless soul he now was.
"That's fascinating, but unless you can speak dog, how is Pongo gonna tell us anything...mate?" Killian questioned in a harm tone.
Rumple chuckled, "Through magic, of course, it won't allow us to communicate, but it will allow us to...extract his memories," He explained to the room of still questioning people.
"Extract!" David was confused, did this mean they were going to be hurting the dog, he didn't want to hurt a pure innocent animal.
"You don't have to worry, he won't feel a thing," Rumple said calming the man.
Emma stepped in, "Why should we trust you? Couldn't you just as easily use magic to fool us?" It was almost a family history to be tricked by Rumplestiltskin, almost everybody in her family tree as been tricked at least once by this man.
Rumple stepped towards her, he was going to make her do something, something that she didn't think she had in her. "Because I'm not gonna be the one using magic, you are" He statted as he pointed a finger to her chest.
"Me?" Emma questioned with a straight face as everybody looked at one another confused, "How?"
He walked around the room, stopping at a large dark wooded cabinet, "You have it in you, you told me yourself, you witness it, didn't you?" He questioned peering over at Killian like they had a secret of their own.
"Love, you don't have to do this," Killian spoke, placing her arm around his wife.
Emma looked up at him, "If it tells us something about Archie's death, so be it, I'll do what I have to."
Snow and David looked at each other, was Emma really powerful? Their whole lives in the enchanted forest, Emma never done magic.
Rumple took out a small circular wooden object and held it in front of Emma, "Now, do you know what this is?"
She looked at it, "A dream catcher?" Was she supposed to see something different? What was the big deal over a dream catcher, almost everybody around had one hanging in their bedroom.
Rumple chuckled, "Well, it's capable of catching so much more." He walked over to the dog and slowly brushed the feathers along its fear, head to tail, as it started to glow.
Snow watched, "Are you sure about this Emma?"
Emma nodded, she was at least going to try, even if she thought she didn't have it in herself
"What is that?" Belle questioned. She was still a little skeptical about Rumple and his magic, whether he was doing good things with it.
"Memories," He whispered back as an answer, "Now, Mrs...Jones, you show us how."
Emma was confused, "how? It's just a jumble."
"Will it. Will it and we shall all see."
Killian wasn't so sure about this, he knew the crocodile was never up to any good.
"Emma took the dream catcher and placed it in front of her, making direct eye contact with the memories, everything was a jumble. "I can't."
"Yes, you can," Rumple grunted towards her, ever since before the curse began he saw it in her, ever since she was a baby she had it, she just never noticed.
Killian placed his hand on her arm, "Take it, slow love."
Emma turned back to the dream catcher and focused harder this time, pouring every bit of concentration she had into this. As she closed her eyes she could feel the warmth pumping through her veins and onto her fingertips. When she opened her eyes, the catcher was glowing twice as strong as it was and an image of Archie was starting to appear.
Everybody peered over to look, they couldn't believe it, did Emma actually do this?
"Emma...you're doing it," David whispered.
Emma was watching and trying to focus her energy onto the catcher, it was exhausting but she had to know what happened.
As they watched they all saw Regina enter into the room with Archie, and then saw Regina taking him by the neck and strangling him, it was all too much. Emma was so sure that Regina didn't actually kill him.
Dropping the dreamcatcher she turned to face her parents and Killian "You were right all along."
"I'm sorry Emma," David apologized to his daughter as he embraced his wife who was mortified by the images she had seen before her eyes.
Emma was furious, she stormed out of that room, after everything this woman did to her and her family how could she even ever think that Regina had the ability to change, even just the slightest bit.
"Emma, wait, where are you going?" David questioned, running after his daughter out the pawnshop.
"To get Regina," Emma said sternly not turning around to face anybody but instead continued to walk.
"Well, shouldn't we talk about this?" Snow questioned her daughter.
"What's there to talk about, mom? She killed Archie, now she's gotta pay"
"And how do you plan on doing that? She has her powers back here" Snow asked.
"Yeah, well you just saw what happened, so do I."
"But Emma, you're just now figuring that out, you have no idea your whole twenty-eight years in the enchanted forest or the ten years we were stuck her frozen," Snow told her daughter who was completely out of her mind right now.
Killian spoke up, stopping Emma in her tracks to look at all of them, "Your mothers' right love, you just discovered these powers, you're still not even sure how to control them yet, and here you want to take on the most powerful women in town"
"Weren't you guys the ones saying that it's Regia the whole time? you should be happy you were right" Emma questioned back, she just had enough of this woman getting in the way of her just living a normal life with her family.
"We may be right, but I also know going after her without a plan is a mistake," Snow told her stubborn daughter.
"So what do we do?" Questioned Emma.
"Even if the dwarfs could build a cell to hold her we need a way to contain her magic until then," David told her, remembering what he and Snow did when they were going to put Regina to rest, but never did because Snow stopped it at the last second.
Snow thought about it, what could hold her magic, "Fairy dust, Leroy said they were processing a new batch of it."
"Will that stop her power?" Killian questioned, with squinted eyes.
Snow shrugged with her arms crossed, "It has before, the problem is she'll see us coming" She said, remembering the time long ago, while Emma was just about a toddler and there was a war between the two and Snow had trapped the Evil Queen into following her, thinking she had Snow alone to finally kill her, but little did she know, Blue was going to freeze her by fairy dust.
"Leave that to me, trust me, we're locking her up," Emma stated as she walked off.
When they arrived at Reginas' house they weren't sure about how their actions would take place, but they were all hoping it would end well.
As soon as Regina opened the door, she was face to face with nobody else but Emma and Killian and of course the one and only, Snow and Charming right behind them.
"Oh, I suppose you're all here to apologize?" Regina asked happily with a wide-toothed smile on her lips.
"I saw you do it!" Emma quickly spat, not waiting for a single second.
"What?" Regina asked confused, stepping out of her house, shutting the door.
"I saw it, you choked the life out of Archie," Emma explained.
Again, Regina was confused, what was this lady on, she already said she didn't do it once before and she believed her, what changed? "What are you talking about? How is that possible?"
"Magic, love," Killian stepped in, getting to the point.
"I saw what happened and it was you, Regina, there's no denying it." Emma was getting mad, she could feel her body tensing up at this moment.
Regina realized what had happened, and how they got to their presumption, "Gold, he helps you. Out of all people, you're going to trust him? He's probably the one that did this!"
Snow stepped in, she wasn't going to let Regina had false facts, she wanted her to know that Emma did it, she was the one who used magic, she was now the one who could defeat Regina, "We didn't trust him, that's why Emma used magic instead."
Regina arched a brow, "You can use magic?" She questioned, when instantly she realized something, "Of course, the saviour, well I can only assume he warned you that all magic comes with a price then?"
"Yeah, well that a price we're all going to make," Emma said, "Because of Henry! He was probably the only person in this town that actually believe in you, lord knows why that is, but his heart is going to be broken, that's our price!" She said as her voice got even louder, and her skin got even hotter with anger.
"No, I will not let you poison Henry against me" Regina stated, Henry was like the son she always wanted but wasn't able to have.
"It's an interesting word choice love, considering you've already poisoned two people in this family," Killian stated. First, she poisoned Snow, then she poisoned Emma.
Regina wasn't going to have this, Henry was the only reason that she was trying to change, without him, she had no reason for any of this. "I want to see him, he deserves to hear my side of the story!"
Emma looked away from her, trying to hold back her anger, but she couldn't. "He is my son! and after this, you're not going anywhere near him!" She shouted at the top of her lungs as she finally decided it was time, "Do it!"
Just them blue came out from behind a tree and through fairy dust at Regina, but she was too late, Regina caught it and paused it in mid-air before it could touch her, "Did you really think that would work again?" Regina questioned furiously as she through the orb of blue magic down at Snow and David's feet, "So much for fairy dust, maybe your newfound magic can save you now."
Emma smiled, "I don't need it, I already won. There is no way Henry will swallow your lies about Archie now. You can pretend all you want, but we know who you are, and who you will always be."
Those words hurt Regina, was she really never going to be able to talk to Henry again? She couldn't take this anymore, she had to leave. Leaving in a puff of purple smoke she vanished.
Killian and Emma drove up to the large rich man's house, the house that not long ago she was being held captive in, along with her mother. Bad memories.
"I can't do this," Emma said with a shaky voice, it was enough for her to have to drive back up to this house, but to drive up to the house, pick up her son and tell him about Archie and Regina. This was a nightmare.
"You can do this, love," Killian said placing his hand on her knee.
Emma sighed, "What, tell my son that somebody he counted on killed the town shrink? I don't know if I can," She took a deep breath and took a second to think, "Yeah, I don't think I can do any of this. This is like real parent stuff. How can I parent if I never was one? I was his parent for only five minutes" Emma looked down, it was true, she never raised Henry, she gave birth to him that was it.
"But you were," He had her look at him, forcing her chin up with his hook, "You were always Henry's mother, even if you didn't know it, you always had the instinct deep inside you." He could tell his words wasn't helping, it was hard to make her believe in something once she didn't, "Just look at when you almost left Storybrooke, you were hauled back because of Henry."
"But things are different now, for all of this, we don't have to go through anything alone, we're family."
Just then saw Henry walking out of the house saying goodbye to Grace, Henry didn't know his parents were picking him up, he was actually a little surprised to see them parked in the driveway of Jefferson.
"What are you guys here? I told you I could walk home," Henry said as he got into the back of his father's truck.
"We know, mate, but something happened, and...we wanted you to hear it from us first," Killian said as he drove off looking into the rearview mirror at his son, at this moment, the moment where he was happy.
"What is it?" Henry questioned feeling a little worried.
The ride home they told Henry all about how Archie was found lifeless in his office, and how they were certain Regina was the one who committed the crime. Henry was devastated, he just kept quiet the rest of the ride home, he just wanted to be left alone after hearing what Regina had done after he just wants her to change, so then she could be welcome like family like she was. She was his great grandmother oddly enough.
That afternoon, once Emma and Killian actually managed to convince Henry to leave the house by telling him it would be good for him and might make him feel a little bit better, they all went to Grannys for supper, in tribute of Archie and to at least pretend like everything was alright and that they were just an ordinary family living in an ordinary world.
"How is he?" Snow mouthed to her daughter who was sitting across from her, as she fed Neil.
Emma shrugged, "Could be better." What was she supposed to say? That Henry was fine with it, because he clearly wasn't she thought to herself as she looked over at Henry was had barely touched his food.
"It's okay, love," Killian said as he noticed the worried look on his wife's face.
She gave him a slight smile, she knew it was okay, but at the same time it wasn't, a friend died today, and there was no way to get him back.
"I saw we make a toast...to Archie," David said as he raised his glass to the air, followed by everybody repeating after him 'to Archie'.
Emma took a sip of her water for the toast and then started to eat a small portion of her fries, but for some reason, she started to feel that slight pull on stomach again, making her sit up and close her eyes, trying to calm herself by taking slow deep breaths.
"You okay, mom?" Henry asked as he looked up from his food.
Emma nodded, but clearly she wasn't as she then couldn't hold back anymore and just had to get up and run to the bathroom, run as fast as she could before any of her food slipped up. She didn't understand what was going on with her, one minute she's fine, feeling completely well and the next it's like an earthquake in her stomach comes out of nowhere.
Everybody at the table was worried, was Emma feeling alright because they thought since the celebration of Emma and Killian's return, she was alright.
"Is she alright, Killian?" David asked a little worried about his daughter.
Killian told him the truth, "I'm not too sure, mate, she was throwing up this morning, but she said she was alright, and she seemed fine all day."
"I'll go make sure she's alright," Snow said, getting up, "David, watch Neil."
When Snow walked into the bathroom, she saw Emma kneeled over the toilet, her face practically in it, "You okay?"
Emma whipped her mouth and nodded, "Just something I ate."
Snow thought, "Are you sure, Killian said you were throwing up this morning as well."
Emma sat down on her bum on the cold floor, her hand combing through her hair, "I don't know mom, it's been happening the last couple days, I feel fine, the next I get pains in my stomach and then I'm throwing up."
Snow thought, There was only one time she remembered Emma being like this, "Are you sure it's not..." She couldn't finish, Emma had cut her off.
"Oh god no!" Emma exclaimed, "I couldn't possibly be pregnant, my body just started healing from giving birth to Henry right as soon as the curse broke."
"But cursed Emmas body never had a baby...did you and Killian have..." Again she couldn't finish it.
"Gross, I'm not talking to you about my sex li..." Before she could finish she felt the urge coming up again, she had to go over the bowl once more.
Snow shrugged, "Emma, all I'm saying is the last time I remember you being this kind of sick, was when you found out you were pregnant with Henry." Snow walked out of the bathroom, and went back to the table, she told them she was alright.
As Emma sat there over the toilet, she had her mothers words to think about, the last time, it was true, last time she was like this, she was pregnant. But she possibly couldn't be pregnant, how could she? With everything going on, she couldn't see herself possibly about to have another baby, especially after just reuniting with Henry. Oh god, Henry, what would he think about this? Would he think she was just trying to replace the memories she never got with him, she would never do that.
All she could think about was what if, what if she was actually pregnant, she had to talk to Killian about this, but when would actually be a good time?
Getting up and cleaning herself off she went back out to the booth, she gave them all a smile and said everything was fine and just a false alarm, she didn't think to bring up whether she and her mother talked about was such a good topic or time. Instead, Emma just finished off Supper with her family, full of smiles and laughs.
Cora peered from around the corner, watching as her daughter Regina fought with the blonde and the pirate, they all believed it was actually Regina who had killed Archie. She didn't want to put so much pain on her daughter as she had almost her entire life, but she wanted her daughter to be broken, broken enough so when she swooped in, she would be happy to see her mother. Maybe she would even be happy to know she wasn't actually dead.
Now, all that Cora had left to do was try and figure out how she was going to get her daughters information from the cricket, she wasn't stupid enough to kill the only person who her daughter actually told everything to, instead she probably just killed some stranger that didn't have much of a life, a person who was probably nothing but a common peasant back in the Enchanted Forest.
Seeing how upset her daughter was from leaving in a cloud of smoke, she knew it was almost time, time for when Regina was crack and she would have to come in an pick up all the pieces.
