Chapter 3: Resting and the Fire Truck
Marshall at his Breakfast peacefully, while waiting for the doctor. Once he had finished, a nurse came and took the plate away. Soon, a doctor arrived in his room.
"Hello Marshall. Remember me?" Dr. Wolff said as he approached the pup in bed.
"Yes Dr. Wolff," Marshall replied smiling. Then he thought of something.
"So, what do I have to do while staying here?" the dally asked curiously.
"Well, the rabies shots we gave you have certain requirements. Since you got the shots, it means you don't have rabies virus affecting you; what's in the shots just helps make the virus not be as effective in your body. Eventually, the virus goes away over time with help from the shots. That's why you take ten shots in the stomach," Dr. Wolff explained. Marshall nodded.
"But to answer your question, the shots require you to rest for four to five days after getting them. This is to make sure the medicine from the shots work. Side effects are flu-like symptoms, feeling tired or weak, diarrhea, and other symptoms. Let us know if you have any. What this means however is that you must stay in bed and rest for the next four days, including today," Dr. Wolff finished explaining.
"Of course. Geez, no wonder those shots hurt," Marshall replied. He had not expected the process of healing from an animal bite to be boring and painful.
"You are a good pup though" Dr. Wolff reassured him before petting him on the head. Marshall smiled.
"So just rest, and your meals for now will be soft foods," Dr. Wolff told him. Marshall nodded before the doctor left.
"Well, better relax for now," Marshall said before turning the TV on.
Meanwhile at The Lookout, Chase and Ryder were talking. Considering Marshall was at the hospital, if a fire emergency happened, a pup would have to do the dally's job for the time being.
"Last I checked, none of us could drive Marshall's fire truck," Chase told the ten year old boy. Ryder thought hard, pacing back and forth.
"Well, if I teach you pups how to drive it, then we can still have a pup to do the job. Even if we were all needed for the job, once one pup completes their job, they would take over as the fire pup. Or if any pups don't have a job yet. Besides, this is only until Marshall feels better," Ryder said, making sure Chase understood.
Chase then went outside and told the other pups about Ryder's plan. The pups were confused at first, but then understood why Ryder wanted every pup to understand how Marshall's vehicle worked.
"When do we start?" Rubble asked, not sure of the best time to train in the fire truck.
"Today Rubble. Who wants to try first?" Ryder replied as he stepped out of The Lookout. Every pup looked slightly nervous, about the new experience. Especially Rocky.
"I'll try dude" Zuma volunteered. Ryder smiled as the two walked over to Marshall's fire truck, and Zuma jumped in.
"Okay. The first steps are pretty much the same for every vehicle. The green button turns the vehicle on, and red stops or turns it off. Give it a try," Ryder told Zuma. The chocolate lab obeyed and the vehicle started.
"Good. Now there are two black pads near your back paws towards the bottom. The left pad are the brakes, and the right pad is the gas," Ryder said. Zuma tried the gas and brakes, going forwards and stopping gently. It took a while for Zuma to get use to. Once he did, the other pups watched and listened to what Ryder said.
"Good. Now the button in the center is the horn. The black paw pads on the sides of the horn is how you steer," instructed the ten year old.
BEEP! went the horn as Zuma pushed it. He then pressed the gas gently and turned the pads so the vehicle turned.
"Nice job Zuma. Now, the circle on the left is the radio, along with the volume dial next to it," Ryder told the pup.
"Okay," Zuma said before pressing it.
PUP PUP BOOGIE! DO THE PUP PUP BOOGIE! came the music as it blasted from the radio. Zuma adjusted the volume higher, making the music louder, then turned the volume down so it wasn't as loud. He then pressed the black circle to turn it off.
"Very nice, Zuma. Now comes the important part of the vehicle; emergency buttons. The left red button turns on the sirens, the orange middle button makes the ladder go out or forwards, and the red right button put the seatbelt on. Give them a try," Ryder told the chocolate lab.
Zuma pressed the ladder button, and the ladder extended out. He pressed it again, and the ladder went back to not being fully out. Next he pressed the seatbelt button and a seatbelt we across his chest, attaching him to the seat. Zuma smiled and clicked the seatbelt button again, making the seatbelt unbuckle and loose again. Finally, the siren button. Zuma pressed the red button on the left.
RRRRAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHRRRRRAAAAAAA came the sound of the sirens as the red lights flashed, abd the siren sound filled the air. Zuma pressed the red left button again to turn the sirens off.
"Perfect, Zuma! You're all done. Great job!" Ryder said with a smile. The chocolate lab carefully jumpedboutbof the fire truck and walked over to the ten year old boy. Ryder pet Zuma on the head and back, happy with his progress.
"Okay pups, who's next?" Ryder asked, turning to the four remaining pups. Next was Chase, then Skye, then Snowflake, then Rubble, and finally Rocky. Each pup preformed the tasks, using Marshall's fire truck correctly. Ryder rewarded them with pets and treats. Now every pup knew how to use Marshall's fire truck.
"Ha ha! Yes! I did it! And without getting wet from the hose! Arf arf!" Rocky said with joy as he hopped out of the fire truck. Unfortunately the last words Rocky said had been 'hose' and 'arf arf'. The firetruck took this as a command, flipping the hose nosel on the ladder backward so it now faced the front of the truck; right in the direction of Ryder and the pups.
"Uh? Uh oh!" was all Ryder got to say before the hose shot out water towards Rocky. The water hit the mixed breed, surprising him.
"Ah! Hey! Turn the water off! I didn't want that! Yuck! Arf arf! Hose off!" Rocky said upon getting sprayed with water. The hose nosel turned off the water, and flipped forwards again to it's normal position.
"Are you okay Rocky?" Ryder asked as he went to dry him off, having just come back from The Lookout with a towel.
"Ah! Even when Marshall isn't hanging out with us, his gear still manages to get me wet!" Rocky exclaimed before taking the towel. Every laughed at Rocky's comment.
