Chapter 5: Pop Quizzes and Assignments

Harry's POV

It wasn't a long walk to the classroom, nonetheless we were all scampering to follow closely to our professor. She paused at the wide-open door before turning to us. Victoria Zabini and Blaise look much alike despite having different fathers. From her gentle gaze, I saw who my friend spent most of his time with at home. The smile she wore was certainly their mother's and her mannerism's a characteristic of the Zabini family. Everything about her was inviting and welcoming. Shaking out of the daze I didn't know took over me, Professor Zabini spoke,

"Students, this is Classroom G3. I want you all to take a moment and pull out your maps and schedules. Look where you are, there should be a black ink spot showing your current location. This classroom should be glowing gold on your maps."

We all did as she said, and I fumbled slightly in nervousness as we were all rushing to follow her first instructions. The parchment that was our map was fairly large compared to our hands. Folding open the map indeed showed what she described. My mind was in a whirl. Wow. Magic still takes getting used to. To think if my uncle got his grubby hands on this while I'm on break there…

A shiver went up my back as I felt a slight throbbing I had been ignoring since yesterday morning. I know it is a reminder of what I have to go back to at the end of term. Back to cooking and cleaning. I don't want to do that anymore, not when this world exists…Maybe I should tell someone? Aresa? Blaise? Does this even happen in the magical world? Could they help me? Or maybe I should try telling an adult again? Maybe not, the last adult I told called me a liar and spoke directly to my Uncle and Aunt about it in front of me. The beating that night didn't come, but no food came for days.

Once again, I shake my head out of those thoughts and pay attention,

"Now, I want you all to sit wherever you please for the first two weeks. After I get a gauge of who you work well with in class and who distracts you, I will make assigned seating. It may or may not be by house or alphabetical order, but this is going to be my first and last warning, this is a serious class. I expect all of you to pay attention, even if you think you know all about the lessons I teach.

Do feel free to ask me questions during and after lessons, but also remember to raise your hand and wait patiently for me to call on you. Do not yell out questions or over others. I am here to introduce you all formerly to Magick and the Wizarding World. Over the years, the topics we discuss and learn will be more advanced and may intermingle with your other classes like Traditions or Wizarding History. Do try to keep the topics in this class and others separate from other lessons. Now, I want you all to walk into this classroom with open minds and eager brains. I will give you all this first five minutes of class to settle in."

Just like that, Professor Zabini entered the class and we were in the hall by ourselves. I immediately looked to Aresa and Blaise for direction, as I turned to them, I saw other students looking towards their own friends and housemates. Most just shrugging and starting to slowly shuffle forward. Finally, the students in front of us decided to move as we all were. Slowly, we trickled into what we discovered to be a huge classroom. It looked like those college auditoriums I'd seen on the telly when Uncle Vernon wanted to watch something with law or science. There weren't desks, but rows of curved long tables so that we'd all have an uninterrupted view of the front of the classroom. As the haul of us started taking seats, I still sat with Aresa and Blaise despite seeing Ron a row behind us. Inside, I felt a bit guilty that I wanted to be close to my new housemates. My mind didn't share the same sentiments unfortunately. Seeing how quickly Aresa and my nearby housemates took out a notebook and pens versus how scattered some of the students in the other houses were, was a moment I saw what I wanted to be. Organized, collected, calm. Not like I am now, also scattered and trying to get all my materials out in sync with my neighbors. I don't like standing out.

"Welcome to Introduction to Magic and the Wizarding World firsties! I am Professor Victoria Zabini and I was a Ravenclaw here several years ago. I have since gained my profession in the studies of Wizarding Laws. However, due to my expanded studies outside of Great Britain, I also have a profession in Wizarding Societies.

I see that you are all prepared. You have your new textbook in front of you. A notebook and pen as well. I am pleased. Writing with quills is hardly used outside of Great Britain and most witches and wizards these days use self-writing quills after they graduate. How about we officially begin the class with a pop quiz?"

All of us in the room immediately looked frightened. None of us have had a chance to even open the new textbook. I don't know anything about this society. Professor Zabini continued,

"Can anyone tell me the purpose of keeping the Magical World and the Muggle World as separate as possible?"

It seemed that no one dared to raise their hand except for Hermione. Her hand shot up like a weed. Her arm so straight that her body tilted. Students beside her jolted at the sudden action. The eagerness on her face caused some looks of displacement. Professor Zabini looked directly at Hermione and then swept her gaze over the entire room. Her gaze paused briefly on her brother as she arched an eyebrow towards him, Blaise looked anywhere else except his sister. Professor Zabini gave a small smile before making sure no other student had a hand raised. She turned to Hermione whose face was red with her excitement.

"State your name and house."

Hermione's mouth opened and she was about to immediately give the answer before she paused to ready herself at the professor's demand,

"Hermione Granger, House Ravenclaw ma'am."

At a small nod in her direction, Hermione was given permission to answer,

"The separation is to keep knowledge of magic away from muggles and to maintain this worlds society. As the laws of the two worlds vary vastly and the governments run differently country to country. There is also the fact that-"

"That is enough Miss Granger."

I felt nervous for Hermione, I think she got the answer wrong. Slowly, that thought seemed to occur to Hermione too. Her eager demeanor diminished within seconds. Professor Zabini wore a stony expression as she quickly looked around the room again,

"I know some of you know the real answer. Speak up now. This isn't a class to let others speak your mind for you."

Slowly, several hands went up. Including Blaise, Aresa's, and even Ron's.

"Blaise Zabini, I've called your name, state your house and the correct answer."

Clearing his throat slightly, Blaise kept his head high and his eyes with his sisters.

"House Slytherin. The purpose of the separation is for magical safety first and foremost. To prevent more burnings of our witches. To prevent the end of magical creatures. To prevent the end of magical lives alike. While Miss Granger's answer applies to more modern issues, the differences between our world and theirs is beyond politics and societies. The languages may change, but the fact does remain that nearly every muggle country in the world has knowingly killed witches, wizards, and magical creatures within the past two centuries.

Quickly, I looked at Hermione whose jaw dropped at that revelation. I didn't expect her hand to shoot up again, but it did. With curiosity rather than excitement,

"Yes, Miss Granger?"

"Is Zabini referring to the Salem Witch trials? That was centuries ago. Why would it still go on today?"

A bright smile came to Professor Zabini's face as she nodded,

"That is your first assignment class! Why are these killings still going on to this very day? I have many connections all around the world. A few of my friends have even fallen victim to witch hunters. All in different parts of the world. No matter how hard we hide here in the wizarding world, they can find us when we are in theirs. It is easier to find the children who have magic before they attend a magical institution, and even easier if they are not able to attend an institution like Hogwarts. Here are the viewpoints you can choose to use for your paper: religion, grudges, hate, family, and war. Choose one, the paper must be three full pages back to back from your notebooks. You may use the older students as references and books from the library. But do not hog the books as there are many of you all and few books here that actually cover this topic."

Murmurs broke out around the classroom. Aresa and Daphne Greengrass shared a glance before Blaise turned to me. He gave me a nod and I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. Nodding back, we turned our attention back to our professor. She was waiting patiently for us to jot down the prompt before continuing,

"Now, let me begin by telling you all about the tale of Magick."

Daphne's POV

A peculiar boy. That is the conclusion I have come to since last night. Aresa's encouragement to give Harry Potter a fair chance really meant 'be nice, he's new' in her friend's own terms. While never particularly close with the LeStrange, the girl knew her manners and was friendly. So, I observed him first last night after our introductions. He's shy, but resourceful. Also, observant but not calculating. Well, we are children, there shouldn't be calculating or schemes at our ages. As we finished our first class, I saw his dedication to learning. Maybe he'll be in my study group with Aresa. I just need to see what subject he is naturally proficient in.

Then there is the matter of those books about Harry Potter. From what little I've seen of him, he couldn't have done half of those ridiculous adventures. Perhaps that would be a good conversation starter.

Aresa's POV

We followed our maps to where our next class would be but found it empty. Traditions, Customs, and Culture. On our maps the classroom was in red with the words 'Will start after Yule Holiday.' After staring at our maps and schedule, we found our next class wouldn't be until 1pm and decided to head back to the Great Hall. Some wanted to go back to their dorms and take a nap, but we all collectively headed to the Great Hall together. A few professors were still at the Head Table in heated discussion that calmed as we entered. The tables were littered in the Daily Prophet papers and letters. However, the paper was so thick, it looked like a book. All of us separated to go to our tables, sitting at the ends closest to the Head Table and began to read the headlines.

Goddess Magick Taken Control

Dear Readers, today brings light to many events from yesterday.

As the students at Hogwarts started their new year with their sorting ceremony, Magick intervened and exposed that Voldemort was indeed alive! His soul was split several times and scattered over Great Britain. She destroyed his magic and being and we are safe from his terror indefinitely, but she did more than this. She declared for justice and balance to be truly restored.

As some of you may know by now, several of our governing officials lost their magic or even died last night. Magick declared their lives to bring balance.

"Too much darkness. Too much light. Not enough in between. There is no true black and white. You have failed me! You have failed your gods and goddess's. For your crimes and greed, your magic is stripped. For the lives you gleefully took, we claim yours. If you felt true remorse, you are spared. If you have turned from evil, you are spared and I remove your marking, but I give you pain as a minor punishment for your actions."

Pages 50-99 for witches and wizards who have lost their magic

Pages 100-203 for witches and wizards who died

Sirius Black Found to Not Have Dark Mark

Sirius Black, sentenced to Azkaban for betraying the Potter family, was found in his cell alive last night after Magick's declaration. One of the few dozens who remain in Azkaban alive, Sirius was searched. The guards surely thought he'd be killed by the Goddess. Bringing this matter to the Ministry, Madam Bones demanded his case file be brought and found that he never received a trial.

Sirius Black was placed under Veritaserum and it was discovered that Peter Pettigrew was in fact THE TRUE BETRAYER OF THE POTTERS. Sirius Black has been released from Azkaban and is undergoing mental and physical treatment for his ten-year exposure in Azkaban. The remaining and new Ministry administration owes this man a great debt that will take time to compensate. Once Sirius Black has recovered and made his claims, the Daily Prophet will provide the details we can.

Peter Pettigrew Found in Hogwarts

Late last night, newly appointed Minister of Magic Madame Bones conducted a search of Hogwarts after an independent message from the Goddess Magick. A dead rat was found in the dorm of Gryffindor. The rat turned out to be Peter Pettigrew, an illegal animagus. He was found under his old bed as well, missing a finger. Yes, Class of 1979 Gryffindor, Peter Pettigrew was in fact a Deatheater. After his body was examined for authenticity, the mark on his arm was no mere spell or charm, it was the real deal. Peter Pettigrew has been stripped of his awards in honor of his faked death in 1980.

Several Ministry Officials and Workers Seen Clutching Left Forearms

In all of the events last evening and throughout the night, nearly two hundred wizards and men were witnessed clutching their left forearms. Upon removing their sleeves, it has been reported that their Dark Marks were disappearing before many eyes. In states of shock, most of these individuals weren't attacked but some were and are now in St. Mungo's and other large hospitals. We have come to find out that two were killed as their marks were revealed.

Due to Magick's declaration, these individuals are truly remorseful and have been pardoned with their lives by the Greater's. For her mercy, we the Daily Prophet will not release their names.

Madam Bones is Now Minister of Magic

Last night, Cornelius Fudge and his Undersecretary lost their magic. Several of his appointed trustees and employees lost their magic as well. But our former Minister did not bare the Dark Mark. No, Magick had a special message for him and no kind words were said. Magick herself appointed Madam Bones and several new figures for head positions. She abolished several departments and written laws before many eyes. She also created new ones. The new Ministry is working hard to ensure the new employees are truly fit for their positions and that no bribing or Embezzlement occurs.

Ministry Official Found Housing Deatheater

Bartemus Crouch Senior was found to have been evicted of magic, as well as the body of his long thought dead son. Bartemus Crouch Junior was a Deatheater and one of the several Deatheaters responsible for the attack on the Longbottom family nearly ten years ago. It has been discovered that in the last visit his parents made to him in Azkaban a few years after his incarceration, his mother took a polyjuice potion and switched places with her son. Before the potion could wear off, she died. Senior is being charged of using the Imperius Curse on his son to keep him in a vegetable state in his home, housing a criminal, and breaking a criminal out of Azkaban.

Albus Dumbledore Removed from Hogwarts

Events last night at Hogwarts were just as busy. A professor died as a result of housing Voldemort's soul. When asked about this Dumbledore did not give a coherent answer and was taken to St. Mungo's hospital. The professor's removal has led to great change in our esteemed school of witchcraft and wizardry.

Many new professors have joined the staff and new classes are already being implemented today. All students are being provided the newest textbooks and materials from the school's funds that seemingly haven't been touched in decades. Upon further inspection, the school's tables and several extremities were out of date and worn. The new school administration worked through the night to pay and replace what they could.

Shortly before this morning's edition of the Daily Prophet came out, it has come out that Albus Dumbledore has been infected by a brain disease previously only known to muggles. Alzheimer's Disease. Class of Merlin and holder of several powerful positions in the Ministry, Dumbledore held his position of the Light for decades. Now, these positions are filled by new faces.

Due to his degradation in mental capacity and behavioral changes, Albus Dumbledore is no longer Headmaster of Hogwarts. Since no witch or wizard has come forward with this disease, Dumbledore is the Wizarding World of Britain's first case. Although, it is now speculated that several historical figures may have also shared this disease, none can be confirmed. As such, the elderly wizarding population of Great Britain is encouraged to have a mental check via St. Mungo's or a Private Mental Mage Specialist.

The chattering was loud and borderline obnoxious. But I was trapped in my thoughts. Cousin Sirius was truly innocent. What of my father and his brother? Surely, they perished last night. The tales were too graphic for their participating to have been remorseful. My mother though… Then there was the reveal of what truly was wrong with the previous Headmaster…and the new Ministry…all so much new things and people. I only hoped that our country would prevail in rebuilding this crumbled society.

As an answer and distraction to my wondering thoughts, five letters shuffled through the pile into a neat stack in front of me. All were the greenly earthy texture I've known to be from Gringotts.

Miss Aresa LeStrange

Due to greater magical events, I your family accountant, manager, and liaison hereby inform you that you are now the sole Lady and Heir of the Most Ancient House LeStrange. I offer my condolences for your father and uncle, I look forward to your confirmation of the passing of these titles. As a symbol of your new Ladyship I have enclosed the Heir and Head rings. These rings have since transfigured into a necklace and bracelet for you to wear until such a time which you pass these titles to your future children.

As the last of your great House, you are hereby the owner of:

LeStrange Manor undisclosed location in France

LeStrange Castle undisclosed location in Britain

Bella's Manor undisclosed location in Bulgaria

Summer Manor undisclosed location in France

LeStrange vault 496 value four-hundred sixty-seven million galleons

Forty-five House Elves Ten for each manor and fifteen for the castle

Miss Aresa LeStrange

Due to greater magical events, I, the Black family accountant, manager, and liaison hereby inform you that you are seventh in line to be Heir and Lady of the Most Ancient and Noble House Black. I offer my greatest condolences for your great grandfather, great aunt, and grandfather.

Order of succession by age:

1.Bellatrix LeStrange neé Black

2.Narcissa Black

3.Sirius Black

4.Andromeda Tonks neé Black

5.Nymphadora Tonks

6.Draco Malfoy

7.Aresa LeStrange

8.Harry Potter

Due to Bellatrix LeStrange neé Black's incarceration, she cannot fulfill her duties as Head of House, therefore the title Head of House goes to Narcissa Black.

Should Sirius Black become capable of fulfilling his duties to his house, he will become Head of House and Heir. Until such a time, Draco Malfoy is Heir as the eldest recent generation of the Black family descendants.

I should not have been surprised as I was. But nothing could have prepared me for this feeling. I, Aresa LeStrange, am the last of the LeStrange line. Remaking my family name in a better image should be easier without the looming statement of my relatives being in Azkaban. Though my mother still resides there alive, maybe Magick spared her because she truly felt guilt for her actions in the war? What other reason could she be spared?

Looking up from my letters, most of the students were also digging into the paper and their letters respectfully. Draco was engrossed in several letters with a look of devastation in his eyes. Instantly, I made to stand but before I could move, Harry called out to me,

"Aresa, who is Sirius Black?"

The boy with that unruly hair and green eyes looked at me almost lost. I was caught now. Looking back at my cousin, I found him looking at me with barely restrained tears in his eyes. Panic struck my core. Was his father…was uncle Lucius… I needed to go to Draco, he needs me. But with the presence of Harry beside me, I knew he needed me too. Not taking my eyes off of my cousin, I made my choice and stood,

"Please ask Blaise about him. I will answer what questions you have when I return."

I wanted to look into Harry's eyes as I spoke to him, but Draco was only looking at me and I didn't want him to think I was dismissing his growing pain. It was a short walk to come to Draco's side. The students beside him made space and I sat closely at his side. His face and hands were pale. His grip on his letters almost crumbling them. Breaking eye contact, we both shifted our gazes to the letters,

Mister Draconis Malfoy

Due to greater magical events, I your family accountant, manager, and liaison hereby inform you that you are now the sole Lord and Heir of the Most Ancient House Malfoy. I offer my condolences for your father's loss of magic. Though your father remains the Head of House until his passing, any magic needed to be performed as Head of House will need to be performed by you.

Due to the ongoing circumstances of your parent's betrothal contract, the events of last night and your father's subsequent loss of magic, clauses have been breached. Your mother is no longer married to your father. She now holds her maiden name and you are the Heir to her family. For details on your Black family status, please refer to the Black liaison mail.

The clauses breached are as follows:

Should Lucius Malfoy be found to have illegally avoided being imprisoned to Azkaban, Narcissa Black's marriage will be resolved.

Should Lucius Malfoy lose his magic or ability to perform magic, Narcissa Black's marriage will be resolved plus her dowry with interest.

Should Lucius Malfoy be found to bear the Dark Mark or proven to have allegiance with Voldemort, Narcissa Black's marriage will be resolved plus her dowry.

Placing my hand on his arm and giving a gentle squeeze, Draco began to breathe shallowly. So, I placed my free arm around his back as a gesture of encouragement. His second letter was similar to the one I got from Gringotts about the Black family succession. Draco was at a loss for words clearly, and all I could do was comfort him as the new order of things set into his mind. Draco's words however, gave me another pang of dread,

"Father is going to kill himself, I'm sure. Mother won't be keyed into the Manor as his wife anymore and was probably booted out as a trespasser. Father is probably home alone without magic. I need to go home Aresa. I need to help him. I need to talk to my mum. I-I-I need to-"

I turned his chin towards me, speaking as calmly as I could muster,

"Send your owl to your mother with written consent of her being a guest at Malfoy Manor. Call him to us and I'll help you write it. Your father still has the family elves with him too. Call Dobby or Kara and instruct them if you need to make sure he is alright. Your father isn't alone Draco, and neither are you. Your mother has friends and places she will have gone if she was in fact booted from the Manor. You can order your elves to still serve her. They are still tied to her magic. The elves will continue to serve your father for his family blood, regardless of him having no magic. Draco, you can name him your proxy, you don't have to do all of the duties as Head of House. You don't have to do everything your father does. He can still handle himself, this all will just take getting used to."

The longer I talked, they more skepticism showed on my cousin's face. My confidence was growing though. The words that came to mind were good answers and logical. Auntie Cissy wouldn't be homeless. Uncle Lucius would be panicking surely, but he'd call his house elves before losing his mind as Draco fears.
