"Anything new?"
Nick shook his head as Katy approached him, sipping on her coffee nonchalantly. "Nothing."
"It's been nearly two weeks and you're telling me that nothing suspicious has happened at all?"
"They're probably biding–"
"I'm not an idiot." Katy almost snapped, shooting him a sharp look. "I wasn't expecting them to break in the next night, but I would have expected something."
"I dunno what to tell you boss."
"Right…" She huffed. "And those flowers? You sure you didn't see who left them for me?"
Nick shook his head. "Sorry."
Nodding distractedly, Katy turned and headed back up to her office. She stared at the bunch of flowers on her desk for a moment, before grabbing them roughly and stuffing them in the bin. There was something about them that unnerved her – the lack of card or sender information making her incredibly uneasy. She'd already ruled out the obvious contenders, most of whom had been completely bemused when she'd asked whether they'd sent them.
It wasn't even as thought they were the first flowers she'd been sent anonymously over the past few weeks and that, in itself, was concerning her. She'd done her best to hide it from her parents, knowing that they'd each jump to their own conclusions and start panicking about the reasoning behind it. Tina had frowned and suggested she had a secret admirer, pressing her to try and work out who it was.
"More flowers?"
Katy jumped as the brunette entered her office and spotted the bunch crammed into the bin beside the desk. Shrugging, the younger woman didn't reply, keeping her attention fixed on the invoices on the surface of her desk.
"Katy, d'you not think you need to look into it?"
"Nah, T, I don't." She muttered, shrugging. "It's just flowers, ain't it?"
"For now, yeah." Tina agreed warily. "But what if it stops being just flowers?"
"Then I'll deal with it then."
"K…"
"Enough, alright." The blonde snapped, shaking her head. "Leave it alone."
"What's wrong with you?"
"I'm pregnant, stressed and I've got too much on my plate at the moment, Tina." Katy told her bluntly. "I can't be worrying about the fact that someone is playing silly buggers and sending me flowers."
"What can I do?" Tina asked, moving round and crouching in front of her. "Let me help."
"You can't, T." She almost whispered. "You can't get involved in all my shit."
"What's going on?"
"Just the usual family shit." She sighed, smiling weakly. "Nothing I can't handle. I just don't want you getting dragged into it, babe."
"Something dodgy?"
"No… just… no."
"Why don't I believe you?"
"Probably because you know me so well." Katy acknowledged. "Honestly, T, don't get dragged into this. I don't wanna risk you getting hurt."
Tina didn't look entirely convinced, but didn't press things either. She just asked whether she could offer Mick any shifts that were available, before heading away to tell him the good news when Katy agreed. The blonde stared at the door that she'd closed behind her for a moment, before exhaling deeply and returning her attention to the invoices again.
"I need you to do something for me." Phil told Katy gruffly.
Katy sighed, pausing as she passed him on the Square. "What is it, Phil?"
"I need you on a job."
The young woman rolled her eyes. "Phil, I'm pregnant, I ain't gonna get myself involved in one of your dodgy jobs. I've got enough shit going on in my life at the moment so I'm not running round no warehouses with people waving guns around to help you out."
"Nah, it's nothing like that." He told her, nodding his head towards his house.
Hesitating for a moment, she huffed and followed him inside, settling herself at the dining room table and waiting for him to elaborate. Phil rubbed his jaw for a moment and then looked at her seriously. Arching an eyebrow, the young woman sighed impatiently and was on the verge of telling him she had somewhere to be when he finally spoke.
"We're doing a job… nicking some high-end motors."
"Right…"
"Kat found the target on one of her cleaning jobs. She's insisting that she needs one of ours on the inside with her while it's going on."
"So you want me putting myself in the firing line so you can–"
"Nah, listen, right, before you start kicking off." He demanded. "Me and Ben are gonna be driving two of the cars, Kat's sorting the third driver. All you need to do is be in the building making sure they're not suspicious. The cleaning side needs to carry on like normal so that they don't suspect anything's going on."
"Are you kidding me?"
"Don't get on your high horse now. There's a pay off in it for you. With another kid on the way you'll need it."
"When is all this happening?"
"Tuesday."
Katy considered him for a moment. "Alright, fine. I'll do it. But if Kat makes a single comment–"
"Good."
Informing her that he'd be in contact with more details, Phil waited for her to leave. Rolling her eyes, Katy made her way out and continued to the bar. She smiled at the staff before dumping her things in her office and heading back down to join Tina.
"Alright?"
"Fine." The blonde agreed. "Honestly, babe, I'm fine."
Still unconvinced, the brunette nodded and smiled weakly, before moving to the other end of the bar to serve a customer. Katy smiled fondly as she watched her, before getting distracted by customers of her own.
The evening passed quickly. Tina headed off at the end of her shift, shooting Katy a wink as she left. The blonde sent the rest of the bar staff home as soon as they'd cleared up, locking the takings in the safe and gathering her things.
Then she hesitated, something nagging in the back of her mind. An uneasy feeling settled over her and she crossed the office to the safe once more, entering the code and removing the contents. Tucking the cash at the bottom of her bag, Katy placed the gun, which had been in the safe ever since she'd taken it from the warehouse job with Phil and Ben, on top and headed for the door.
Making sure the front door was secured properly, she headed for home, keeping a tight grip on her bag. Bridge Street and the Square were both deserted as she strode towards home. Katy knew that her parents would be absolutely furious if they knew she was taking such a risk – walking home alone with so much money in her bag – but she refused to give up her independence just because she was pregnant.
"What you doing up?" She asked, dropping down onto the sofa beside Tina. She glanced sideways at the brunette, smiling tiredly at her. "You didn't have to wait for me to get in, you know?"
Tina chuckled. "Didn't feel right going to sleep while you were still out."
"Soppy cow."
"Yeah, well…"
Nudging the bag she put on the coffee table with her foot as she placed it on the surface, Katy swore and struggled to bend over enough to pick it up. Tina laughed and reached for it, swearing softly as she realised how heavy it was.
"Bloody hell… what've you got in there? Bricks?"
"The takings…"
"Why? Something wrong with the safe? You haven't forgotten the code again, have you?"
Katy shot her a look. "Course not. I just had a strange feeling… felt safer bringing it home tonight."
"Any particular reason?"
Shrugging, the blonde struggled off the sofa and yawned, stretching lazily. "Not really. I'm going up."
Following Katy from the room, Tina switched off the lights and made her way up the staircase. She paused, watching as the younger woman poked her head round the doors to her daughter's bedrooms, checking on them quickly, before smiling at her.
"Sure there's nothing going on?"
"I promise." Katy nodded, reaching out and squeezing her arm. "Night, babe."
Closing her bedroom door, the blonde exhaled deeply, closing her eyes and leaning against the surface for a moment, before dropping her bag on the chair in the corner of her room and getting ready for bed. Collapsing against the pillows, she draped a hand over her eyes and tried to force herself to sleep.
It barely seemed like any time at all before she was ripped back to consciousness by a buzzing sound somewhere to her left. Realising it was her mobile, she scrabbled for it quickly, before jamming it to her ear.
"Ms Mitchell?"
"Hello?"
"This is Securico Systems." The voice on the other end of the call told her quickly. "We've received an alert that the alarm at R&R bar in Walford has been activated. We've passed that on to the police and they'll be deploying someone to check it out soon."
"Fucking hell… I mean, thanks." Katy struggled out from under the duvet and rushed to get dressed. "Uhh… thanks."
Ending the call, she hurried across the corridor and knocked on Tina's door, not waiting for an answer before pushing her way inside. Sitting on the edge of her mattress, she shook her away as gently as she could manage, before giving her a hasty explanation about where she was rushing off to.
