Chapter 9:
Back at Amy's apartment, Sheldon and Amy were lying in Amy's bed hugging each other tightly and having trouble falling asleep.
"I'm scared." Amy said in a small voice and Sheldon tightened his hold on her.
"Me too." He confessed and kissed the top of head.
"I won't leave your side." Sheldon promised.
"Thank you." Amy said.
They laid in Amy's bed hugging each other a while longer before they fell asleep in each other's arms, afraid of letting go… of the next day, and at the same time waiting for the next day to be over.
Sheldon was the first one to wake up the next day. He was facing the wall, but he soon turned around and saw Amy fast asleep. She looked like she was sleeping peacefully and he didn't have the will in him to wake her up, knowing what is waiting for her today.
Sheldon wanted to hug her, but at the same time he worried that he will wake her up, but he didn't have to think about it too long because before he had time to decide what to do, Amy turned around to face him and snuggled close to his chest, and without even realize it, Sheldon wrapped an arm around her and brought her closer to him and inhaled her scent.
In return Amy laid a hand on Sheldon's hip, a thing that made Sheldon wonder if Amy was in fact asleep. His suspicions were soon confirmed.
"Will you come in with me if they'll let you?" Amy asked Sheldon with a small, scared voice.
"Yes," Sheldon answered immediately, without thinking twice.
Ever since Amy decided to have an abortion and set up her appointment, Sheldon thought what he will do and where he will be when she will have the procedure, and whenever he tried to picture his day, he was only in one place; in the hospital. He was either with Amy in the room where they'll do the curettage or in the waiting room, sitting nervously on one of those chairs in the waiting room, waiting to hear that everything went fine and that he can go see Amy.
"Really?" Amy asked surprised.
"Yes. I told you last night that I won't leave your side. That wasn't just me saying it. It was me promising that I won't leave your side, and if I the doctors will allow me to enter the room with you, I will enter the room with you and hold your hand." Sheldon promised Amy.
"Is that because of the relationship agreement?" Amy wondered for a moment.
"No. it didn't even cross my mind." Sheldon answered truthfully, and Amy could do was tighten her hold on Sheldon and bury her head in his chest.
"I love you, Sheldon." Amy said brokenly into his chest. The fact that the relationship agreement didn't cross Sheldon's mind, showed Amy that he is supporting her and willing to enter the operation room, because he genuinely wants to be by her side every step of the way, and not because of an obligation he put down in the relationship agreement.
"I love you too." Sheldon said back and kissed the top of her head. When he told Amy last night that he would not leave her side, he meant it with every fiber of he being. He is not going to leave her side. Ever. And if he could he would made them work in the same office.
They stayed in bed a while longer; neither of them wanted to get out of bed and get ready for the day. Sheldon just held Amy close to him. he didn't want to rush her to get ready. He knew that everything that happened lately is already hard on her, so she didn't need to be rushed to something that was scaring her from the start.
"I guess I'll get ready." Amy sighed heavily as she started to get out of bed.
"Alright." Sheldon sighed and got out of bed as well.
"Do you want anything for breakfast?" Sheldon asked Amy.
"Can't. " Amy said simply and took her clothes to the bathroom.
"Right."
Both Amy and Sheldon got out of Amy's room and parted ways; Sheldon went to the kitchen but he didn't feel like eating or drinking anything, so he just sat there and went over the paperwork for the procedure again.
When he reread everything, he noticed something, that somehow both he and Amy either overlooked or forgot about; the procedure will be under general anesthesia, which mean that most chances are that Sheldon won't be allowed in the room with Amy during the procedure.
Sheldon was sitting at Amy's counter when she came out of the bathroom and saw him rubbing his face.
"Is everything alright?" Amy asked him as she came closer to him.
"Yes… yes… it's just that I went over the paperwork for today…" Sheldon faltered for a moment.
"And?"
"And… well… the procedure will be under general anesthesia… and I think that it means I won't be allowed in the room with you…"
"Oh… I… I forgot about that… I can change to local-"
"No! no… I don't want you to go through it while you are conscious to all of it… I won't allow you to do so…"
"But then you'll be waiting outside…"
"Exactly. I will be outside. I won't be anywhere else but waiting for you to get out of the operation room." Sheldon said as he caressed Amy's arm gently.
"I promise. The first face you will see will be mine… well, other than the nurses at the recovery room."
"You should call Penny to be with you."
"I'll think about it."
They stayed near Amy's counter in silence for another moment before Sheldon went to get ready for the day as well.
Neither Amy nor Sheldon felt eligible enough to drive to the hospital, so after Sheldon was ready for the day and Amy grabbed her bag for the hospital, they called a taxi to take them to the hospital.
Once they got to the hospital, they went to sign all the papers and then they went to the gynecological wing where they met Amy's doctor who will perform the procedure and the one examined Amy right before the procedure takes place and where Amy changed into the hospital gown.
Sheldon stayed with Amy through every step of the way, including the invasive examination. He was once again surprised at how easy it was for him to be there for Amy for every part she has to go through before the actual procedure itself took place.
Once Amy was done with the necessary examinations, she was rolled to a waiting room for patients who wait to enter a surgery or a procedure, where she and Sheldon waited somewhat impatiently, until a nurse will come and take Amy to the operation room.
Sheldon sat next to Amy on a chair someone provided him and all he could do was holding Amy's hand and caress it. he didn't know if he should say something, and if he should then what he should say, so all he did was looking at Amy with a small smile as he held her hand for as long as he could.
Amy was scared of what is going to happen, but she was glad that Sheldon was there with her. She was still a little surprised that he was there with her, accompanying her through every step of the way. In those last two months, Amy realized that she couldn't ask for a better boyfriend to be by her side, and that's when an epiphany hit Amy; she didn't see Sheldon as her boyfriend anymore. The last two months changed the way Amy sees Sheldon completely, and she finally realized that she sees Sheldon as a partner to share a life with. granted, she thought about sharing a life with Sheldon long before everything happened, but at the time she saw it as sharing a life with her boyfriend in the hope that eventually they will get married, but now she saw him in a whole new light.
Amy finally saw Sheldon as more than just her boyfriend; she saw him as a partner, the person she will come to for everything; good or bad, she saw Sheldon the person who will be by her side and will protect her if she needs said protection.
Amy finally saw Sheldon for the whole person that he is and not just as her boyfriend, and that felt freeing, because for the first time in two months, there was something that Amy was completely sure of and it is that she loves Sheldon with all her heart and that she truly wants to be with him for the rest of her life, no matter what happens between them physically. She wanted to be with the person who sits next her and caressing her hand for the rest of her life, and from the last two months, she had a feeling that Sheldon felt the same way.
They waited in that waiting room for about an hour, and all they could do was look at each other and hold hands.
Finally, after an hour of waiting, a nurse came to take Amy to the operation room.
Sheldon got up and squeezed Amy's hand.
"I will be outside. I promise."
"I know. I love you." Amy squeezed his hand back
"I love you so much." Sheldon said as tears started to escape from his eyes.
Sheldon leaned in to kiss Amy on the forehead, but for the first time in two months, something changed for Amy.
She turned her head slightly towards Sheldon and gently reached his lips, not touching it yet. Sheldon noticed the turn of events and was surprised by it. He looked at Amy for a short moment and nodded his head for consent.
Amy nodded her consent and reached even further to Sheldon's lips and he leaned down slowly, and for the first time since everything that happened, Sheldon and Amy shared a soft and tender kiss on the lips, that conveyed to the other the profound love they have for each other.
"I'll see you soon." Amy said as the nurse started to roll her to the operation room.
"I will. I love you." Sheldon said one final time.
"I love you too." Amy replied, and with that she was rolled to the operation room.
Before either of them knew what was happening, they felt how they started to cry, fearing the worst-case scenario.
