Silence reigned in the study as Hermione looked at him in confusion, "the heir to the house of black? How can I be an heir to a color?" He smiled you are the heir to my family, we are a house because we are pureblood and a part of the Sacred twenty eight, the oldest and purest of our society."
"So essentially you are part of the aristocrats of this magical world you mentioned and I am a part of your family" Hermione clarified. "Yes, that is why we hold a seat in the wizamgot, essentially the wizarding version of parliament, with an elected minister rather than a monarchy." "So you have confirmed I am your heir, but who are my parents, why was I adopted, why are you just telling me now?" Hermione's brain was asking more questions than she could process. She already knew she was adopted the fact that she belonged to this man's family was not a surprise, that she possesses magical abilities were even less surprising given the amount of times she had called books down from shelves or made her doll's listen to her whilst she read. She looked up at the man again and catalogued several differences between them, he had mentioned a glamour, but what was it and did that explain why she did not resemble him, maybe she resembles her mother more. Thinking about her mother made her freeze, she had left school and skipped class, how was she supposed to explain this to her parents?
"Additionally," she finally voiced out loud, "do you have a telephone I need to call my parents and tell them where I am, I'm sure by now the teachers have noticed I'm absent from class and alerted them to my disappearance, I wouldn't want to worry them further." Arcturus smiled down at his granddaughter (yes she was his great-granddaughter, but he wasn't going to add that title every time in his head!) "Do not fear, I have already sent a note to say you are with a visiting professor from a foriegn continuation institute for the gifted, and Mr. Beignet has informed the rest of the staff that you went home sick, so neither side will question your absence for the day."
Hermione felt her eyebrows rise, if anyone else had stated they had crafted a story and insured that the story was supported by one of her teachers, so that they could take her from school she knew she would be concerned for her safety, but here with Mr. Black, she had no concerns. She decided that might be the most important question she had swirling through her brain, was that. "Why do i trust you, why did I not question taking your hand?" She observed him as he processed her most recent question.
"I will answer them in reverse order as you have asked many questions. You trust me as your magic recognizes me as your grandfather, do not worry this will not happen with everyone of our blood, but if I had to be truthful, I think you subconsciously recognized me for who I am the same as I knew you were my granddaughter." She nodded cataloguing they way she felt when he offered his hand, she had felt complete trust for him, something she had questioned with the 'relatives' she met of the Granger's. "Now to address your other questions, I have been searching for you since I determined you existed, the tapestry is what confirmed your identity for me, and the adoption question I cannot answer as I, myself have not yet determined what caused you to be left in a Muggle neighborhood six years ago."
"The tapestry confirmed who I am?" she asked, he nodded leading her around the desk to stand in front of the tapestry. This mark is you here," he pointed to a long curved branch covered in thorns littered with iridescent silver flowers blooming slowly around a young girl. Hermione reached forward to trace the branches up to a split on the left she read the name Regulus Black on the right she found the portrait of a softly smiling young lady, with just initials under her portrait (A.R.R.). The young woman had long black locks and icy blue eyes, Hermione admired both portraits of her parents, "What was her name," she asked softly while observing the likeness of her mother. She heard a sigh that caused her to look to Arcturus, " I am not sure Walburga never even told us Regulus was engaged, she kept it very quiet, in fact I did not know you existed until two years ago when she finally died. I suspect she covered up your birth so she could ensure Regulus continued to fall in line. He was beginning to question the things his mother told him, if he had a wife and child at the time, I have no doubt she would have kept both of you captive to ensure his good behavior." Hermione glanced at her own portrait and realized it had only initials as well (A.O.B). "Do you know my name?" her voice soft, "Unfortunately no, I am still trying to unravel the magic protecting both your identities, but I have actually decided it is for the best."
She looked up a question on the tip of her tongue when he lifted a hand, "I do not want the world to know you exist, you are the neir to one of the most powerful families in the country and I wish to train you in everything that means. I want you to know where every snake lies in wait and to distinguish the garden variety from the vipers waiting to strike. I have no doubt that the knowledge that your cousin is not the heir to the Black fortune would cause several reactions throughout the wizamgot and their families. Hermione you must understand we are not a light family, in fact we are considered very dark, you would be hunted by both factions. I hold no illusions that should you rise before you can fully protect yourself you would have a larger target on your back than that Potter child. Your father was a servant to the last Dark Lord due to Walburga your grandmother, not because he was mindless in his support, he hid it extremely well but I knew him just as I knew Sirius and Alphrad. There is a reason both of your parents are dead Hermione and I will not leave you to the same fate." Hemione nodded along to his points, what he was telling her did not all make sense, but both of her parents were dead if the tapestry was to be believed. Logically it had told him she was alive and here she was. Finally she looked to him, " I understand what you are saying, but I can't leave the Grangers."
He sighed and nodded, " I had come to the same conclusion, they have done a fine job raising such a brilliant young lady. You are refined due to the language and dance classes you take. You know muggle pleasantries and decorum, but I need you to understand the magical world even better than you do the muggle world. I have a proposal for you as I do not want to force you to do something against your will. Let me train you under the guise of this continuation school. We have many villas scattered throughout Europe, and we can continue to expand your knowledge of both worlds. I have the money to make it completely legitimate, your parents would never question the all expenses paid scholarship, and all you would have to do is convince them."
She thought about the plan he just laid out, she knew she was due to leave school this year. She and her parents had discussed it multiple times. She knew they did not want her to go to university so young and she was too bright to stay with a regular tutor, or program. She stared up at the moving tapestry, the large shelves of books with titles just hinting at the magic secrets they were hiding behind their covers. She wanted to know more about this part of her. She had already explored more of the world than she should be able at her age, this would be the perfect bridge, but there was just one more thing she wanted answered before she agreed to this ploy. "Arcturus," he interrupted her sharply, "Call me grandfather, now that we have confirmed your identity I will not allow you to call me by my first name." She nodded in acquiesce,"Grandfather, I want your word that you will not keep secrets from me, and that I will be allowed a summer break in the world I know. I will not forget the Grangers and I still need to be a child."
He smirked, "you are so much like your father, he was so quietly polite, but every once in a while his rebellious streak would surface, usually to secure himself a better deal. Very well I will draft all the paperwork to send to your parents, and I will do better than promise you." She watched as he drew his wand with a flourish. "I, Arcturus Black vow on my magic to protect Hermione, my granddaughter with my life. I shall strive to teach her in all things so that she will be prepared to face our world, within the construct of a school year while allowing her to remain in the care of the Granger couple, each summer." Hermione felt the weight of his words settle over them as a string of silver encircled his right wrist. " What was that?" she exclaimed, "It is a wizard's oath, not as life threatening as the unbreakable vow, but extremely painful to ignore, now you have my word and my magic's promise to uphold my end of the bargain."
Loud chimes sounded through the manor as Libby, at least she thought it was Libby, appeared. "Master you has a visitor in Mrs. Malfoy!" Arcturus sighed, "Hermione it is time you go home, Libby will take you to your family, I will send the paperwork out tonight once I have it organized if you have any questions before the next time we get to speak call Libby or Tippy and they will carry any messages you may have." He leaned down to hug her softly to his side, " I know your mind is running through every possible scenario, please get some sleep child." She warmed at his tone before whispering a soft goodbye.
Arcturus POV
He watched as Libby popped away with Regulus' daughter, waved his wand at the tapestry behind him obscuring it from view. He would do everything in his power to keep her hidden and that included from her cousins. He strode quickly from the room warding it properly before descending to the first parlor. He opened the door to find his granddaughter perched on a chair looking impeccable. As he observed her for a minute he could not help wishing he could tell Narcissa about her cousin, she would be able to help her with the intricacies of the pureblood women that he could only scratch the surface of. That thought left just as suddenly when he remembered the family she had married into and where her loyalties now lay. He could not trust her with a secret such as this. With that he moved forward to take the chair across from her.
"Narcissa, I was not expecting you today," she nodded a soft smile coming to her lips, " I just wanted to share the good news Draco has performed his first intentional act of magic, summoned his training broom from the shed outside!" He nodded to confirm he heard but could not help comparing him to Hermine, she had performed intentional magic much younger which brought a smirk to his lips, outloud, "yes that is good, but that could have been sent in a letter, why have you really come?" She set down her teacup before launching into the latest stupid idea Lucius had come up with, he silently added firewhiskey to his tea as he listened to her tale.
Hermione POV
She appeared beside her home in the shadows, Libby nowhere to be seen. She shook her head at everything that had been revealed that day. Her adoption was confirmed, she had learned the identity of her father, but her mother and her own identity remained a secret. She peered into the garage to see her parents were not home from the practice yet and proceeding into her home. She decided to test what her grandfather had told her and concentrated on calling things to her from the shelves, she quickly moved on to changing the color of the couch cushions, before she realized she was mentally and physically exhausted after such a long day. She settled on the couch to wait for her parent's arrival home, eyes began to close and before she knew it, she was fast asleep.
