Chapter 10
He didn't sleep very well last night.
Keith was pretty pissed off about that fact.
Generally speaking a quick off was a great way to let off steam and relax. To calm his mind and boyd and just drift onto dream land. He didn't know if it had to do with circumstances — fucking in a closet far from his bed — or if it had more to do with the person — one James Griffin.
Or maybe it was just because of Lance.
He'd been thinking of Lance the entire time in the dark closet. And while he was sure to get Griffin off first — it may have been using Griffin but he wasn't so selfish that he wouldn't help him get off — Keith hated to say that he came far sooner then he liked. But maybe that was the point. A quick fuck in the closet so he could let off some steam.
Griffin hadn't been at all put off. Just made a crude joke about, "McClain and those leggings claimed another victim. Never thought it'd be my ass," and walked out of the closet with a small laugh and a shake of his head.
Not his best hookup.
Definitely not the worst either.
He walked back to his room, fighting the shame that wanted to creep over him. There was nothing going on between him and Lance. They were barely accuantices at this point. And no matter how much Keith wanted his nextdoor neighbor — they weren't together. Keith didn't owe Lance anything. No more than Lance owed him.
His amethyst eyes trailed over Lance's door when he'd reached their shared hallway.
He almost knocked. The thought of Lance in those skin tight leggings egging him on. Those long legs and pert ass tempting him to just test the waters and see if Lance wanted—
Keith sprung away from the door and rushed into his own room.
He had literally just got done fucking Griffin. And now? Lance on his brain and he was already hard again.
"Fuck." He cursed as he kicked off his shoes.
He stumbled over to the dresser and yanked the drawer open. He pulled down his pants just enough to take his cock out. A few leisurely strokes before he found the bottle of lube he was looking for. He sat down and groaned at how hard he was with just the thought of Lance.
Of those long legs spreading wide. Making it look oh so easy. Parting just for Keith.
He bit his lip harshly. His hips bucked up into his fist, setting a crushing pace.
Lance's amusement as he caught Keith watching him. That damn smirk he wore when Keith couldn't do the same poses as him. How it switched to something else as he helped Keith through as many as he wanted.
And fuck.
Lance maneuvering so easily through those poses.
How flexible he was.
Keith wondered how many different ways Lance could bend if —
He came with a loud grunt, spilling over his hand. Thankful he'd already had his gloves off from earlier. He laid back on the bed and groaned.
If he couldn't manage to keep it in his pants every time he thought about Lance…
This was going to be a long trip.
Needless to say, Keith didn't sleep well.
That lead to him saying fuck it and just hopping otu of bed earlier then he needed to. Already packed the day before, he decided to just wander the halls for a bit to try and clear his head. To not think of much of anything other then familiarizing himself with the Garrison halls.
He thought he heard humming coming from the south, the direction he was idly heading once he had decided to visit Red. So it wasn't like he was being nosy on purpose. It was more of a convenience thing.
He rounded the corner to the 'lion's den' as Lance had dubbed it for him and stopped dead in his tracks.
"Hey Mullet!" Lance beamed brightly as soon as he saw him enter the garage.
The garage was the only place big enough to keep their lions. Keith hadn't expected to see Lance so early. Not here anyways.
"Morning!" He continued, turing back to the lion he was attending to.
Keith opened his mouth to reply when he finally noticed which lion Lance was by. "What are you doing," came out of his mouth instead of an actual greeting.
Because Lance wasn't by Blue. He was by Red. Fixing one of those saddles Blue had been wearing — and yellow and gold had been too now that he thought about it — the first time he ran into them a couple of days ago. It wasn't so odd that Red was getting a saddle, Keith was actually kind of looking forward to not having to go bareback for at least one time in three years but no, the odd thing was that Red was letting Lance do it.
What the fuck?
Lance merely hummed, not seeming to notice how odd the situation was. "Just seeing if one of Blue's old saddles will fit Red. Ya know, so your more comfortable and we can carry a few extra things." He patted the saddle bags. "These things are a lot roomier than they look."
Keith watched ocean blue's glancing over to the lion of the same color lounging in the corner. A chuckle fell from Lance's lips.
"Yes, yes so you don't have to carry everything." He smiled at his lion and then turned to Red and pat his mane. "You're a gentleman right? Not gunna make the lady carry everything, are ya?"
Red just stared at Lance. Keith approached quietly, not wanting to miss whatever Red said. Which was stupid giving that Red spoke directly into his head.
'She can't carry it?' His lion responded sarcastically.
"Of course she can carry just as much as you," Lance scoffed but a good natured smile tugged at his lips, "it's the principal of the thing, Red."
Red tilted his head. No outright reply this time.
"Has Keith taught you nothing in the ways of how to woo a woman?" A thin eyebrow raised.
"I'm gay." Keith said without really thinking. He was still trying to process how Lance was talking to his lion.
Amused blue eyes met his gaze. "I know. You've told me. A few times even. I seem to remember a certain conversation through the wall about giving it up the ass?" That smile had Keith pinching himself discreetly. How could Lance smile so pretty? How could it be so distracting? "What about wooing in general?"
"Never really had to."
"Ah, the men just flock to you, huh?" Lance teased with a crooked little smile. "I believe that."
Keith flushed. "That is not what I meant."
Lance chuckled, fingers idly stroking Red's mane.
"I wouldn't do-" He tried to warn, but stopped mid sentence as Red's eyes slid shut and a feeling of content washed over him. Red's content.
What the fuck?
"How are you doing that?" Keith finally stopped at the other side of Red — staring at Lance over his lion's back.
"Doing what?" Lance continued to run his fingers through the dark red mane. "So pretty." He mumbled under his breath and Keith swore Red puffed up his chest in pride while Blue snorted loudly from the corner.
"That!" Keith struggled to find the correct way to put his words together as he gestured at Lance and Red. "He barely let's Shiro touch him and he's known Shiro for three years! How-how did you get him to let you put a saddle on?"
Lance furrowed his brows, his beautiful face pulling into confusion. "I asked?"
"You asked?"
"Yes?"
"And he said, what?" Keith leaned over Red's back to study Lance for any tell that would give him away. "Go ahead?"
"He didn't say anything, man." Lance stayed firmly where he was. "I can't hear any lion besides, Blue, dude."
"But-But! You were talking when I got in!"
"No? We weren't?" Lance's expression turned to concern. "Are you feeling okay?" He reached up a hand to place it on Keiths' forehead.
"I-I'm fine!" Keith squeaked and slapped his hand away. "And yes you were! You were talking to him about carrying stuff and-and having a conversation with him."
"I was guessing." Lance glanced away with pink on his cheeks. "I don't know what any lion says besides Blue. I just try to read their expressions and shit and take my best guess at what they are saying. Body language, remember?"
"You're shitting me." He deadpanned, recalling the first day they met and Lance claiming the same thing. "That's it?"
"That's it."
Keith scowled.
Red nudged him with his muzzle. 'Are you mad?' The calming rumble sounding the same as always.
"No. Just surprised." Keith kept it vague.
"By my awesomeness?" Lance smirked as he leaned over Red, bringing his pretty face closer to Keith's.
He fought the sudden impulse to kiss that smirk. That would be weird. They'd only known each other — uh got reacquainted — a few days ago. And they'd been fighting for a solid 80% of that time if not more.
Wasn't sleeping with Griffin the night before supposed to curb this want? The scary part was that Keith wasn't sure it mattered. That Griffin had been a band aid on a broken bone. Especially if his immediately masturbating to Lance after the fact was any indication.
He was fucked.
Keith stood his ground, tried not to move a muscle as he responded. "By how you got Red to even let you touch him." He answered. "He only likes me."
"Not even Shiro?" Thin eyebrows rose in surprise.
"Not even Shiro." He confirmed. "I said that earlier, didn't I?"
Lance pursed his lips in thought as he nodded. "I really didn't do anything…"
'He sang to me, first.'
"What?" Keith snapped his head to Red's gaze.
"What did he say?" Lance's voice rose a pitch. A clear sign of panic.
Oh. It must be true then.
A slow smirk spread across Keith's lips. "He said that you sang to him?"
"I-I-" Red danced prettily along Lance's cheeks.
'It was a language I haven't heard of yet. Needed Blue's help to identify. She called it Spanish.'
"Spanish?" Keith repeated, surprised. "I didn't know you spoke Spanish."
Though he should have been able to guess. He knew that Lance came from Cuba. The main language there was Spanish.
Lance flushed bright red and flung himself off of Red. "Oh my god, Red! You promised me you'd keep that a secret!"
'I didn't.' Red assured Keith with a mental snicker. 'He doesn't always read us right.'
"He says he did no such thing." Keith smirked and rested his chin on his open palm as he watched Lance sputter. It was adorable.
"You-you-!" He held a finger out threateningly. "Blue!" He turned to his lion."Help!"
The lion in the corner merely rolled over.
Red laughed.
Lance scowled. "Everyone's against me." He mumbled.
Keith rolled his eyes at how dramatic he was being. "You better hope not. We're all you got for the next… uh, how long we are going to be gone again?"
"Should just be a few days if everything goes right the first time around." Lance told him as his face returned to a normal color. It seemed he could reign in the dramatics when the need to be serious arouse.
"And if things go really bad?"
"Then maybe a month."
Keith blanched. "A month?"
Lance nodded as he strolled over to Blue. "that's what I've packed for anyway. It shouldn't take nearly that long."
"We've never worked together before." Keith reminded him as he followed him over to Blue, Red following along behind him. "You'd have better success right off the bat with Hunk or Pidge."
Not to mention Keith wasn't sure he could go that long without acting on his impulses.
"I told you yesterday," Lance sighed as he pulled another saddle off the wall, "they have to stay here to manage the technical shit. They need to be here to make sure that we installed the thingy correctly and they can access it from here."
"So one stays here and the other goes with you."
Lance dropped the saddle next to Blue, the lion rousing from her sleep. "Look, Mullet, I'm not dragging either of them back out so soon. We're hardly home enough as it is and I know if I leave you behind you'll just go around and be all broody and shit and probably just spend time in between banging Griffin -"
"What the fuck?"
"- just sparing. So you're coming with me." Lance poked his chest harshly. "Do I make myself clear, Kogane?"
Keith swallowed down the fierce words Lance's speech stirred up. The impulse he always struggled with at the Garrison when faced with authority. But Lance wasn't a Garrison teacher, or someone to put him down. Lance was just proving himself more of an equal. More of the leader Adam had claimed him to be.
He also pointedly ignored the spot on deduction of him sleeping with James.
Lance had called them hate fucking in a closet. And if it was up to Keith he would never hear about it. He could just see the smug expression on the man's face.
Keith also tamed down the other fire that burned in his belly at seeing Lance like this. The… arousal at seeing him so commanding. With Keith of all people. Why the hell was that turning him on so much?
Lance's shoulders sagged when Keith didn't answer. "I mean… of course you have a choice." He ran a hand through his short chocolate hair. Keith wondered if it was as soft as it looked. "I just thought…"
"Thought what?" Keith's throat seemed dry all of a sudden.
"That having someone good in close combat would come in handy while I install this." Lance pulled out an odd looking contraption from his green coat pocket.
The thing was small, taking up only half of Lance's palm. It was gray and covered in odd looking tech that Keith couldn't begin to understand. He held out his hand and Keith was irritated that the device took up his most of his palm. That Lance's hands were that much bigger than his.
"And you know that I can't ask Shiro."
Keith nodded at that. They both agreed on keeping the older man home.
"You two are the only really skilled close combat people we have. Hunk, Pidge and I all prefer distance. So you're the best one for this." Lance admitted like it pained him.
"What about Griffin. Or Kinkade. Or those two girls they're always with?" Keith had seen them training.
They obviously couldn't hold a candle to him or Shiro but… well Keith's mind had to find an excuse, a way out of this. The way Lance kept saying how skilled he was, had his heart wanting to fly out of his chest. And… well he was still struggling with that commanding tone Lance and used against him earlier. Confusing signals were all he was getting from him.
Lance snorted. "Trust me. No. Griffin's halfway decent but I don't work with him when I can help it and Kinkade…" Lance looked away, fiddling with his zipper on his coat, "he's long distance too. So we don't generally do missions together. Not like this one anyways."
'Sotp fighting him. We need to go if we're going to make good time today.' Red berated him. His lion was getting anxious. He wasn't used to being cooped up in the same place for so long. Not since —
"Fine." Keith spoke cutting off his own thought. "Red needs to stretch his legs again anyway."
Lance lit up and Keith hated how much he liked seeing it.
"Great! I'll get Blue ready and we'll go!" He spun around. Annoyance took over his features at his still sleeping lion. "Really, girl?" He nudged her with his foot. She didn't move. "Blue!" He dropped to his knees and began pushing her. "Get up!"
She lifted her front leg and took him down. Lance now trapped under his lion's grasp like she was cuddling her favorite toy. "Blue!" He whined.
Adorable.
He could feel Red's presence poking his mind for an understanding of the look Keith must have had on his face. He gently pushed his lion away and sighed.
This was going to be a long few days.
There was a surprising amount of people that came to see them off. Mostly just stopping in and saying their good lucks until the only ones left in the room were Shiro, Adam, Hunk and Pidge. Matt being the last one to leave.
"I'm going to die." Keith told his Shiro and Adam in a hushed voice as soon as the oldest Holt was out the door. "I'm not going to make it back here if being alone with him is anything last night."
"Now who's being dramatic." Shiro shook his head.
"Last night?" Adam jumped at the detail. "What happened last night?"
Keith bit the inside of his cheek before deciding to relent the information. "I got too turned on while doing yoga with Lance and banged Griffin in a closet."
"What?!" The two shouted at him.
He flushed brightly as the other three turned towards them with varying states of interest.
"Nothing to see here," Adam shooed away the wondering eyes. He took Keith's shoulders in his hands. "Please restate that for the record."
"Do I have too?" Keith groaned. When Adam began to shake him he sighed. "I got turned on doing yoga with Lance and ended up banging Griffin in a closet to let out the tension, alright? But it's not my fault!" Keith tossed his hands up in the air. "He was wearing these tight ass fucking leggings and—"
"Oh, I know the pair." Adam rolled his eyes. "Bet that evil genius did it on purpose."
"Well I mean… I took his other clothes so—"
"You were wearing his clothes?" Adam grinned evilly. "Oh… So it was a happy accident then."
"What?"
Shiro sighed and gently removed Adam's hands from Keith's shoulders. "He might have been struggling just as much as you, Keith. Seeing someone you want in your clothes is a huge turn on for some people."
He groaned at how the tone had somehow went from Keith wanting advice to getting the 'talk' from an after school special. "Okay, please don't ever say that sentence to me again. Gross. Second, Lance doesn't think about me like that, okay?"
"Hmm?" Adam glanced pointedly over his shoulder, at the group of three discussing the mission. "You sure about that?"
"Yes." Keith stood his ground. Ignored the flip his heart did at the skepticism in Adam's voice. "And even if he did, now really isn't a good time."
"Why not?" Shiro frowned. "You guys are about to be alone for at least a week. Sounds like a good time for something to happen."
"I agree. You can bang all you want with no one around to hear you. Sounds pretty ideal for some freak time." Adam wiggled his eyebrows.
"Again. Never repeat that sentence." Keith leveled them with an unimpressed. "I just… we started off on the wrong foot and we're barely getting along as it is. I don't wanna mess the whole thing up by throwing sex in the mix."
"Wow." Adam awed.
"That's very mature of you Keith." Shiro smiled. "I'm impressed."
"Shut up," He grumbled.
*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.
"You going to be able to behave?" Pidge nudged him and wiggled her eyebrows.
Lance rolled his eyes. "Please. I always behave."
"Uh huh." She eyed him suspiciously.
He completely neglected to tell them what had happened last night after the two left the training area. Where he'd shown up to do some before bed stretches and stumbled upon Keith and James grabbling. He left out how hot it was to see Keith throw another man around. Up until it seemed to get just a little to heated — then he of course had to open his big mouth because god forbid he would see something he could never unsee. Even if it would be weirdly hot? Voyeurism just wasn't a game he wanted to play in any aspect when Griffin was involved.
Cause fuck that guy.
And yeah, Lance also left out how him and Keith went through some yoga stretching. And how he was pretty sure that Keith might have been checking him out. At the very least he stayed until Lance finished and that meant something… right?
But then Lance had got scared. He had told Keith he looked good in his clothes and then fucking bailed. He had taken the other exit from the locker room so he'd minimize his chance of running into Keith. He went to the kitchen and by the time he got back to his room, he heard Keith in the shower.
Which meant that Keith hadn't gone back to his room right away.
At least that was Lance's theory. He didn't really know and while he had tried to gode Keith into some kind of confession earlier, the swordwilder hadn't budged.
"Hey." Hunk shook him out of his mind with a hand on his shoulder. "You alright, buddy?"
"He's fine." Pidge grinned. "Probably just fantasizing about all the shit him and Keith are going to do this week."
She was maybe half right.
"Oh you know me Pidgeon. I'm always thinking sex when the fate of the Garrison is involved." He snarked.
"I don't think she's saying that bud." Hunk - always the buffer - cut in. "Of course you focus on the mission first."
"I don't know," Pidge hummed. "He hasn't really had to deal with anyone but us on a mission. And we know he has no intention of banging us."
"... that's… true." Hunk grew worried.
Lance sighed. "Look guys. I appreciate the concern, or whatever the fuck it is you're trying to do here, but nothing is going to happen between Keith and I. There's no interest there."
"On whose side?" Pidge eyed him critically.
Obviously trying to figure out what the hell was going on. But Lance wasn't about to answer. Thankfully Hunk's always been able to sense when Lance needed to be done with a topic. He was a good friend like that.
"Oh would you look at the time!" His large friend glanced down at his naked wrist. "You and Keith better get going if you wanna make good time today."
Pidge sighed, recognizing the lame distraction. "Yeah, okay, fine." Her grin grew as she shouted, "see ya later, emo guy!"
Lance watched as confusion washed across Keith's face as he searched for who she was talking to. Then realization as he figured out it was him. And then finally his face set in a scowl.
He strode over and said, "really. You could just call me Keith."
"What fun would that be?" Pidge grinned. "You have yet to feed me dirt on Matt, so until you provide sufficient substance, you shall be emo guy."
"Oooo," Hunk cringed, "sorry my dude." He grasped Keith's shoulder in a soothing gesture. "You may be emo guy forever."
His lips set into a thin line and Lance tried not to focus on how adorable he looked.
"I mean, Lance is still Loverboy because of -"
"Bub bub bub!" Lance waved a hand in between Keth and Hunk, separating the two forcibly. "No. We aren't doing that today."
"Loverboy?" Keith's lips wobbled as he seemed to try and fight a smile. "I forgot about that."
"I hate you." Lance spoke at Hunk instead, ignoring his soon to be partner for the week.
Hunk's expression fell.
"I mean obviously I don't." Lance shook his head and threw his arms around his best friend in a tight hug. "Just… I do at this very moment for reasons. It'll pass."
"Promise?" Hunk asked.
"Promise."
Hunk then proceeded to squeeze the life out of him.
"Uh…"
"Don't mind them." Pidge told Keith's questioning gaze. "They're always like this."
"Dramatic?"
Lance turned just in time to see Keith quirk a brow as he said the word.
Pidge grinned. "Ah, yes. Very much so."
"We aren't dramatic!" Lance denied quickly.
"We just share a great bond." Hunk shouted to the roof, "the likes of which this world has never seen!"
"Yeah!" Lance put his hands on his hips and puffed up his chest. "If Hunk wasn't solely into chicas I'd totally marry him!"
He ignored the odd look from Shiro as Adam snickered at his side. A fond look on his face as he watched Lance and Hunk's antics.
"Ahh, thanks dude." Hunk grinned.
"... wow…" Keith blinked as he watched them with weary eyes.
"Emo guy, you need to hurry back here so we can complain about the world together." Pidge smacked his shoulder with a wide grin.
"Oh god…" Hunk stared at Lance with wide eyes. "Is it bad that I'm kind of… scared?"
"Not at all." Lance shook his head. "I'm petrified."
Pidge cackled maniacally and Keith let out a barely there chuckle.
Lance tired not to strain his hearing for it. "Anyway, we better get a move on, Mullet."
"Lance!" Adam gave him a quick hug. "Take care of my little brother will you."
"We aren't related." Keith deadpanned.
"Little brother in law."
"Shiro and I aren't related, either."
"Fine. Feed him to the wolves." Adam sneered at Keith as he reached over to ruffle his hair.
Keith shoved him off and promptly flipped him the bird. Lance saw his barely there smile as his travel companion hopped onto Red's back.
"Pretty sure he can take care of himself." Lance admitted lowly. He didn't need Keith to know that he actually thought pretty highly of his combat skills. He'd rather die honestly then let him know how much. Vague admittance of how good he was didn't count. Objectively he was good.
"I'm sure he can." Adam hummed as he watched Shiro and Keith exchange one more goodbye. "Just…"
Lance brought his eyes to Adam. His friend seemed oddly worried. "Hey." Lance jabbed his shoulder. "I'll have his back, alright. Don't worry. He'll come back safely if I get any say in it."
He frowned and reached over to ruffle his hair just like he had Keith's. "I'm worried about you too, idiot."
Lance snorted and put on his best mask. False bravado. "Please! They don't call me Sharpshooter McClain for nothing!" He shot him finger guns.
"Thought it was Loverboy?" Keith teased with a barely there smile.
Adam belted out a laugh. And it took Lance a few minutes to realize that he wasn't the only one. Hunk and Pidge and even Shiro were chuckling too at Keith's comment.
Lance fought the heat on his cheeks as he boldly laid across Red's back to pur up at Keith. "I mean, I'll be whatever you want me to be, corazon."
Keith's eyes widened and Lance swore pink began to blossom along his cheeks before he directed Red to turn away, causing Lance to stumble from the sudden lack of support.
"Hurry up or I'll leave you behind, McClain." Keith grumbled as he and Red trotted towards the opening of the garage.
Pidge snorted. "Behave my ass."
Lance ignored her and swung himself up on to Blue.
"What the hell." He heard Shiro curse.
"Problem, Shiro?" Adam nudged him with a crooked grin.
He was looking at Lance as he said. "How did you do that?"
Lance furrowed his brows, anxious at having his old hero's attention on him so completely. "Uh… do what, exactly?"
"All of it."
He frowned deeper while Adam just laughed.
"That would be the patented Loverboy charm you just saw my dear Taksashi." He slung an arm over his fiance's shoulders. "No one is immune."
"... but—but—"
"Shhh." Adam hushed him and began guiding him away. "I'll explain in a bit. See ya later Lance! Love you Keith!" Adam called over his shoulder in parting.
Lance gave a lazy lift of his hand, still thoroughly confused. What had Shiro been talking about?
"Well, we'll be seeing you." Hunk smiled up at him.
"You remember the plan?" Pidge asked him. Her way of showing she cared. By making sure Lance relayed the mission.
Lance nodded. "Radio back every twenty miles. If I don't get a reply - we'll back track until I do so we know the exact extent of the coms' range."
"Perfect."
"You guys going to be able to man the radio the whole time? Those will be pretty frequent, until dark. What if you miss one?"
"No worries, buddy, we've enlisted help so that Pidge and I don't have to spend all day and night with the thing."
"Not that we're expecting much activity at night." Pidge added. "For… obvious reasons." She nodded her head in Keith's direction.
Lance understood what she was trying to insinuate but said, "sleeping?"
"No I was thinking-"
"Yes." Hunk put a large hand over her mouth. "Sleeping. And we will be too. Or at least I'll be, Pidge may be awake. But we've gathered volunteers to help us take shifts in case something goes wrong and you need us."
"Awesome, thanks."
"Just… be careful, okay?" Hunk told him as he patted his leg.
It was the first time that one of them was going to be gone for more than a few days. A week was a more probable minimum. It could be longer, even. Lance didn't blame Hunk for being anxious. He was too. But at least he had Keith and Red with him. If shit hit the fan, they should be able to manage.
"No worries." Lance put on a brave face. "Blue and I got Kogane and Red with us. If anything gets too bad, well we already know we're pretty good at running away together." His eyes had moved to find Keith and was surprised at the, well, surprise on his partner's face.
Did Mullet hear him?
Lance cleared his throat and looked back at his friends, "we'll be seeing you guys in a week. Hopefully."
"Stay safe." Pidge nodded. "You too emo guy!"
"Yeah, you better come back in one peace, Keith!" Hunk shouted.
Keith merely nodded.
"Alright, later guys." Lance gave them a two finger salute.
Then he rode Blue next to Keith and red.
"Ready?" Keith asked, amethyst eyes looking over him.
Lance grinned, excitement of the unknown tickling his belly. "You bet!"
