Author's Note: So I called this chapter "Now or Never" because Sulli's passing was so abrupt and unfair, and I feel like maybe many people had positive things to say to her but didn't get a chance to. Bullying is a killer, as much so as cigarettes and driving while drunk. Show kindness to others. Take the time to tell people how special they are to you or how amazing they are because even the most confident and happy looking person sometimes hurts inside. Live a happy life and try to brighten other people's days too. We love you, Sulli.
Amber's POV
"So what's good here?" Krystal asks as you all walk through the door to the restaurant.
"Everything! But I really recommend the Krazy Kimchee, the Bulgogi Blitz, the Pork Belly Palooza, or the Ramen-rito!" Yongsun answers as she points out her favorites.
You walk toward the model foods on the counter. The Kimchee option is a burrito stuffed with kimchee fried rice, egg, bacon, and beans. The Bulgogi wrap is made with white rice, bulgogi, sprouts, and potatoes. The Pork Belly Palooza has glistening pieces of bacon and shiso leaves stuffed into a tortilla, while the Ramen-rito is bursting with orange colored noodles. But you can't see the prices for any of these.
"Looking for the prices? There're here." An eager looking cashier with a mound of floppy brown hair holds out a menu.
"Er," you glance at his neatly printed name tag, "thanks, Jimin."
"You're welcome! Let me know if you have any questions! It's a pleasure having you here at Koreo Burrito!"
You grin at his earnestness and he winks back. Then you look at the menu and almost drop it. The cheapest option is ten dollars and that's for cheese fries! The burritos are all over twenty dollars. What was this place? You glare at the model burritos. They looked rather small in size now.
"Hey, guys?" you turn towards the others behind you, "are we gonna share or—"
"Why don't we get all of them and some loaded fries? They're the best!" Byul cheerfully says as she slings an arm around Yongsun's shoulders. Yongsun instantly blushes and slaps her arm away. "We're in public Moon Byulyi!"
You look down at the menu again. The loaded fries with bacon, sour cream, scallions, and cheese are a whopping fifteen dollars. But before you can speak Krystal marches toward the front.
"We'll take one of each, the loaded fries, and four bottled waters," Krystal tells Jimin as she slides a shiny black metal card over the counter.
Your stomach drops. That would be over one hundred dollars worth of food. At a freaking casual burrito place.
"Uh, ma'am, we only take cash here, sorry," the he apologetically says with a deep bow.
"Are you kidding me? What sort of place doesn't take Amex?"
"I'm very sorry ma'am, but we don't take card."
Krystal just gives him a look of disbelief before Byul nudges her out of the way. She digs into her pocket and slaps two crumpled hundred dollar bills on the counter.
"No change." Byul smirks at Krystal. "Now you owe me dinner."
As Jimin reaches forward to take the cash, you internally debate if you should stop him. But what would you say? That you can't afford it? You can't say that in front of all these people. So you glumly watch him deposit the money in the till. You're going to have to work five extra tutoring shifts this week to cover that meal. This is why you never let other people pay for you. You resignedly turn to Byul.
"Hey Byul, I promise I'll pay you back later this week when I can make that up—"
She waves you off. "Nah don't worry about it. You can get next time!"
You can't understand these rich people. What if next time was more expensive than this time?
"If it's all the same to you, I'd rather just give you cash," you quietly say.
Moonbyul opens her mouth to argue but Krystal places a restraining hand on her arm.
"All right."
Just then a boy with a shaggy head of hair steps out of the back kitchen. He's balancing a tray with all the food on his pointer finger while bouncing a basketball with his other hand.
"JK, careful! Those burritos are for them! And give them four waters!" Jimin shouts from the register.
JK nods as he silently deposits the burritos and fries on a table and goes back behind the counter. He roots around and tosses four bottles of water onto the table. They land perfectly on end without the slightest wobble.
"Wow! That's so cool! How'd you do it?" Yongsun squeals, clapping her hands like an excited seal.
But he doesn't answer and disappears back into the kitchen.
"Did I say something wrong?" Yongsun timidly says, looking around.
"Nah, don't worry about him. He's just shy. Enjoy your meal!" Jimin calls out. In response, JK peeks out from the kitchen and gives Yongsun a thumbs up before disappearing again.
"Yo! Jungkook can you make me some ramen?" Jimin good naturedly orders as he saunters into the kitchen.
You hear the banging of pots and pans as you sit down. Byul takes the Kimchee burrito and cuts it into pieces with a knife and fork, giving Yongsun the choicest bites. Krystal daintily picks up fries and pops them into her mouth. You grab the Bulgogi wrap. Before you can take a bite, someone's phone shrilly rings.
"Don't pick it up Krys. If you pick it up you owe us another meal," Byul warns.
"That's a dumb rule. It's Luna. Maybe it's something important," Krystal replies as she unlocks her phone. "Hey Luna!"
You faintly hear someone on the other line but can't exactly make out the words. But Krystal turns ashen and drops her fork.
"Oh my God, what? Are you sure?" she whispers, horrified.
Byul and Yongsun both look up, worried. Yongsun has a fry halfway to her mouth and Byul is in the middle of chewing.
"I'm coming right now!" Krystal jumps out of her chair and speeds toward the exit.
You look at Byul and Yongsun for a beat. All three of you simultaneously push away from the table and follow Krystal. Your mind races. Did this have something to do with Kai?
"Krystal, wait!" Byul shouts but Krystal keeps heading for the door.
"I have to go!"
"Is everything okay? Do you want your food to go?" Jimin worriedly asks as he comes back out of the kitchen.
"Er, sure?" you say. You hate food waste.
Krystal shoulders her way past the door and starts running toward the direction of the school.
"Done! Good luck whatever you're doing!" Jimin hands you the heavy brown bag.
"Thanks Jimin!" You take the bag and then sprint after Krystal with Byul and Yongsun on your tail. You catch up after a block and grab her arm.
"What do you think you're doing?" Krystal screams at you, trying to shake you off. You're reminded of how Kai had grabbed her yesterday and immediately let go.
"Sorry! But do you want to explain what's going on? Maybe I can help you—"
But Krystal takes off again. Byul and Yongsun run up.
"What's—going—on—" Yongsun wheezes, holding her sides.
"I don't know!" You distractedly run a hand through your hair. "You think we should leave her alone? This is Krystal's business."
"Are you crazy? We're her friends. We should help her!" argues Byul.
"Well she didn't ask us for help."
"Yeah, and in case you haven't noticed, with the whole Kai thing, she sucks at asking other people for help. I'm going to go. You can come. Or not." With that, Byul starts racing after Krystal again. Yongsun eyes you critically for a moment and then follows.
You just feel completely out of your league. But you wearily trail them anyways. Krystal's slowed down and is walking in circles now.
"Hey, hey! Krys. Calm down and tell us what's up. We can help. It'll be more efficient," Byul says as she places a hand on Krystal's shoulder. Krystal gives her a crazed look.
"I—Luna called me. She said—she said that she was going to meet up with Sulli…"
"And?" Byul gives Krystal's shoulder a soft squeeze.
"Well, Sulli didn't meet up with Luna. So Luna went to Sulli's room. And she found—she found Sulli in her room…Sulli—she's gone," and at this, Krystal collapses on the ground, breaking down into wild heaving sobs. Yongsun just stands stunned. Byul immediately kneels and starts stroking Krystal's hair, but she's shaking too.
"What do we do? Oh God!" Krystal wails loudly.
You feel frozen.
You know Sulli. You tutored her in freshman Biology. She would bring you snacks and called you "Hyung," which she said meant big brother in Korean. You two had a light-hearted rapport, something superficial that could have gone deeper, if you had taken the time to pursue that friendship. But class ended and you two didn't have to meet up anymore. You always meant to reach out to her, especially after that hate mail incident last year.
But always meaning to never meant you did.
You hear yourself talking on autopilot. "Guys, let's get back to the school. Krystal, can you have someone drive us or should we walk?"
Krystal gives you a bewildered look. You have to repeat your question three times before she pulls out her phone and texts someone. A few minutes pass before a black SUV turns a corner and pulls up next to you. The door opens and a gangly boy steps out.
"Get in," he commands, pulling everyone up into the car. He gestures for you to get in too, so you do.
"I'm Minho," he says, extending his hand.
"Amber."
He shakes your hand and takes out a box of tissues. You notice that his forehead is wrinkled with intense concentration.
"Is it true?" Krystal whispers, peering at him from behind her hands.
He soberly nods, his countenance cracking as a tear tracks its way down his face. Yongsun and Byul gasp. Krystal's face crumbles with grief and you want to both run away and envelop her in a hug because you never want to see that look in her eyes again.
You simply endure during the rest of the car ride as her anguished cries wash over you again and again and again.
