Birthday Blues

[Author Notes: Sorry about taking a month I kind of got the flu so couldn't really focus.]

December 18th, Leblanc Café

Once they hear Shido confess to his crimes, everyone cheers.

Akira was the loudest, "Finally! I'm going to be free!" "Congratulations Akira! Now you'll be able to live free!"

Ann quickly puts her arm around his shoulders and kisses his cheek, "I'm so happy for you! We all did great as well!" "This is such a joyful occasion!"

Makoto looks at her sister, "So will you be able to prosecute Shido then?" "Oh, please tell me we got that asshole!"

"We won't be able to do it right away." She says, "Until the connections in regards to his crimes are established but I will make sure I will do my best." She smiles, "It seems like Wakaba's research will help us with that as well."

Ryuji smiles, "We don't mind testifying!" "Aye! Too bad we can nah help wit' that!"

Sae chuckles, "Thank you, but it'll be alright. I don't want to add any unnecessary suspicions to you. It's time for the adults to get in there and show how it's supposed to be done."

Sojiro smiles, "Speaking of unnecessary suspicions, would Akira be able to go back to school? I hear finals are going on now."

"He can go back to school. No one will come after him. Some of the people around Shido have been dealt with. Someday, someone will find out that we worked together, it's unavoidable unfortunately."

He shakes his head knowing what she was saying, "You mean faking his death right." He sighs, "If the police had done their job properly…"

She sighs, "I know...But there is one detective that could figure out that you are indeed, the phantom thieves, and that I had helped you. But whatever he does with that information, is all up to fate on hoping he will understand your cause."

Makoto gasps, "You mean Naoto Shirogane? The one who solved the murder case in Inaba?"

She nods, "Yes. I remember father saying that he used to work with his grandfather and that they are a family of detectives that were able to solve even the coldest of cases."

Yusuke sighs, "That could be dangerous for us...Do you think that they would hire him?" "That could cause a lot of problems..."

"They could but they would be putting themselves at risk. He could trace it all back to them by finding more evidence as well. Though I have high doubts that they would do it right away. So, you are safe now, I just wanted to give you a warning. It is a time for celebration after all."

Haru nods, "I agree! We should just focus on being happy that we were able to change Shido's heart." "Yeah...I'm pretty sure that a detective that's supposed to be able to solve anything should be ignored...Great idea..."

Sae smiles but receives a text message which she looks at, "They took Shido to the hospital. So, I'm going to get going. But keep your celebration to a certain level. Akira's back after all, and you guys should put your real work into studies." The teens groan at that.

When Sae leaves, Haru starts handing out coffee, with Ryuji getting soda, while Sojiro hands out the curry.

Akira smiles at Ryuji, "So...what happened after Hifumi dragged you away?" "Oh yeah, I wanted to know about that."

Ryuji instantly spits out his soda, blushing, "N-Nothing happened!" "Oh thar was a lot happenin'! He was mighty explorin' her booty!" "Damn it, Kidd!"

Ann slaps his arm, "Well the all-star finally got rewarded for his act first, think later attitude!" "There is nothing to be embarrassed about! You had your first time!"

Morgana jumps on the table, "How did Ryuji of all people be the first one to be with a girl!?" "It is beyond prosperous! Morgana should have been the first to do that to...

Ann glares at 'Zorro', "Do not say it, Zorro!"

Ryuji groans holding his head to the table, "Can you guys just please stop..." "Arrrgh cheer up lad! We be jus' messin' wit' ye!"

Sojiro smiles, "Ah, this reminds me of my youth."

Yusuke holds his chin, "I am shocked though, not about Ryuji being one with Hifumi but that it wasn't Akira and Ann." "Especially with that act of lust when he broke him out of the rage."

Futaba nods, "So eating someone's face stops a psychotic breakdown. That's good to know." "Maybe they eat the rage away!"

Ann laughs, "Nope! It was just the power of love!" "And I consider it the ultimate power!"

The next day

The group decided to have a group study since Ann and Ryuji were having trouble studying. Even Akira didn't really study since he was worried about everything going on.

Ann looks down at Akira's paper, "I can't believe that you actually didn't study. How am I supposed to copy your answers?" "Didn't we talk about this before dear? You have to learn yourself."

"Well it's kind of hard to when I was dealing with becoming psychotic and then thinking I was going to hurt you guys. Oh, and me almost literally getting killed. So that begs the question...will it work as an excuse?" "Well unless you want the whole school to hear you're a phantom thief then yeah, go ahead."

Makoto looks at him confused, "I can't believe you are easily able to talk about your close call." "I would say that we experience near death all the time but we can get revived. That is the difference."

He shrugs, "I guess I'm just too happy right now to think about it." He looks at Ann, "Besides, we just have to think about the future, right?" "Speaking of the future. Weren't you supposed to be a model? For Ann's parents?"

Ryuji laughs, "For real!? I'm surprised that Ann would let other girls see Akira in that way!" "Well he ain't naked! So that's like enough why!"

"Oh, I allow it!" Ann holds Akira's arm, "I don't care if girls or women look at him. Just no touchy!" "But sometimes girls or boys don't like to follow the rules!"

Makoto gulps quietly, "T-That's good for you, Akira." "Why did she have to say that..." "You still have to tell her, Makoto-san..." Anat whispers. "I-I know...But I'm too scared to tell her..."

"Uh...Thanks Makoto..." "You still need to tell Ann what happened..." Arsene whispers. "I know that...I'll just keep stopping her when she gets too touchy till I'm ready...Though I was caught in the moment at Shido's palace..."

Yusuke smiles, "Perhaps you can do the church pose as your signature move?" "You can call it 'God's Gift'."

Akira laughs, "Yeah...I am not doing that. Though it would be funny." "So, he would be considered a god's gift to woman?"

Ann smiles, "It would but hey, I kind of left my brush in your room. It was the red one. Can you please grab it?" Akira smiles and nods then goes to grab it. Once he leaves, she turns to Haru, "So were you able to get the private area at the Wilton buffet?"

She smiles, "Yes! It was rather easy." "I love that I got to be your persona. You can get anything for free and I do love free stuff."

"Oh man...I can't wait to stuff my face with that food again! I thought you were gonna only have it for you and Akira." "Nay! I reckon they be going t' wait till aft afterwards!"

Ann smiles, "Well I rather have all of us celebrate his birthday. He's done a lot for all of us." "Yeah. But I think he deserves a lot more than a buffet!"

Makoto nods, "I agree but I think he has gotten the best birthday gift already when he heard Shido's confession. So, he would be happy with just us being there and feeling free." "Maybe your sister could get us one of those internet videos of the court proceedings that we could give Akira as a gift."

Morgana looks at all of them, "So do I get a birthday?" "That's right! We should be celebrating Morgana's greatness as well!"

Futaba nods, "Why don't we just make it when you first met Akira and Ryuji?" "It's not about celebrating greatness, stupid! But Mona does deserve a birthday!"

"Man! That was all the way back in April!" Ryuji says, "So yeah! That's sounds good!" "Oh great...We be going t' hear Zorro scream how great they be...Fer a day..."

Morgana meows happily, "Yeah! I'll be alright with that." "Then for our first birthday! I request a kiss for Morgana from Ann and a kiss for me from my beautiful senorita, Carmen!"

Ann laughs, "You are definitely not getting a kiss. But! I do have a surprise for you Morgana, that me and Akira talked about. So, you'll have to wait till your birthday then." "I would say kiss my ass, Zorro but you would probably enjoy it. I know Arsene did and he did more than just kiss it."

Wilton Hotel, December 20th

Right before Akira and Ann got off the train, she had blindfolded him then led him to the hotel and up to the elevator to the buffet. So now they were in front of the buffet area.

Ann smiles even though he couldn't see it, "So...are you ready for your first birthday surprise?" "I still think you should have just given him the second surprise first."

He starts chuckling, "Well I'm not running into people so I think I am." "I have a feeling you're going to be more excited for the second one, Akira. Based off of Carmen's reaction to this second surprise."

"Really Carmen!? I told you not to get overly excited!" "I'm sorry dear...You know I get overly excited with these things..." Carmen whispers. Ann rolls her eyes, "Anyway! Here we go!" She takes off the blindfold and as soon as she does.

"Happy Birthday!" "Happy Birthday!" Everyone yells.

Akira smiles big seeing and hearing the happy birthdays, "Thank you everyone!" He looks around, "How come there's no one else is here except for the waiters and chefs?" "Did you guys actually get this buffet privately?"

Haru smiles, "Well Ann asked me if I could use my status as the owner of Big Bang Burger and I was able to do it." "Ah...I remember getting excited when you were able to get that one amusement park all to ourselves."

He smiles at her, "Well thank you for this. I would say you shouldn't have to but I guess it was no problem."

Ann hugs him, "Well it was a last-minute thing since we were busy so it's not as great as your surprise for me and less drama filled." Carmen laughs, "Oh, I remember that. The slap heard around the world."

He hugs her, "I love it no matter if it was last minute or not." "Yeah...Even I felt that slap..."

"Glad to hear that!" She kisses her cheek, "Now let's start the party!"

After everyone grabbed their plates full of food, they start talking amongst themselves. Akira sits next to Sojiro, "So wasn't expecting to be doing this, this year, huh?"

He laughs, "No, no I haven't. Let's see here; taking care of a falsely accused teen, having Futaba come out of her room, you being the leader of an interesting group, personas and this Metaverse, psychotic and mental breakdowns, a talking cat, you faking your own death and now I'm standing in a fancy buffet in private for free. I was going to mention guys in tuxedos blind folding me and tying my up but I'll believe that more than anything else that has happened this year."

"Oh, trust me, I was thinking the same thing. Honestly, I was hoping to build a new life here and I guess I did even though I didn't see it that way at first. I have new friends that are also personas, a new girlfriend, magical powers and a second family. For someone who was falsely accused...I'm living a great new life so far."

Sojiro chuckles, "Not only your life but everyone here." He puts an arm around his shoulder, "You managed to change everyone's life for the better. I have a feeling that if you weren't here. Things would be worst here. Not only for them but for me and Futaba. I don't want to say this but I also have a feeling that Futaba may have..." He shakes his head not wanting to think like that, "Anyway, everyone is here for you, not only because it's your birthday but also because you did a lot for them. Now I know this is usually for fathers but you're the son that I hoped that I would have had with Wakaba."

Akira smiles big at him, "That's great to hear. And you're the best legal guardian that a troubled teen could ever have. So, thanks, my second father."

He smiles and pats his back before pulling his arm away, "Thanks kiddo and also thank you for avenging Wakaba. It means a lot to me."

"Of course. She didn't deserve what happened to her and I would have done it even if it had nothing to do with Shido."

He chuckles and nods, "I know that and for that, I am grateful."

Morgana, Ryuji and Yusuke were sitting on one of the long couches talking to each other.

"Can you guys believe it!? It's finally over!" Ryuji says happily "'n 'twas right afore Akira's birthday!"

"Yes. It has certainly been a long road but I'm glad as well." "Yes, like Makoto said. It is a wonderful gift."

Morgana meows happily, "Akira may have done the leadership! But without my skills in thievery. We wouldn't have gotten far." "So, you shall bow down to Morgana after celebrating Akira's day!"

Ryuji sighs, "Y'know, usually I would argue with you but you're actually right." "Wouldna go that far but a thanks be in order."

Yusuke looks at him in shock, "You...are actually agreeing with Morgana?" "I was not expecting you two to agree with them."

Even Morgana was shocked, "Whoa Ryuji, I didn't expect that either. Are you feeling well?" "You finally realize the greatness of Morgana and myself!?"

He shrugs, "Cuz it's the truth. If we didn't meet you down in Kamoshida's jail. We probably would have gotten captured again and you taught us everything about the Metaverse. So yeah, without your help, we woulda been screwed!" "Calm down thar Cat! Ye've been a great help t' us all. That's all I be sayin'"

"So, you finally realize my greatness Ryuji, maybe you aren't as dumb as I thought you were...Is what I would be saying if I was like my old self." He looks down, "I only acted like I was better than everyone because I didn't know who I was and I just wanted to belong..." He looks up at Ryuji with his ears down, "I'm sorry for calling you an idiot and useless all the time...You may make a lot of stupid decisions but you have more heart than all of us since you're always jumping into danger to save someone." "Hmph, that is good enough! As long as you admire my greatness then I thank you."

Ryuji smiles at him and pats his head, "Thanks for that Morgana." "I dunno wha' t' say t' that..."

Yusuke chuckles looking at both of them, "It's good that you two have finally gotten along with each-other. You've been at it since I had joined." "It's always nice to see two people at each-other's throats get along."

Ann had all the girls group together to have their girl talk except for Makoto who wanted to talk to her sister. And of course, she went after Hifumi instantly about her 'time' with Ryuji, "Sooo, how was your time with Ryuji?" "Oh yes! I would love to hear that!"

That question, of course, makes her blush, "U-Um...Do I have to answer that...in public?"

Haru shakes her head, "You don't have to if you don't want to." "Probably him going 'this is better than fighting shadows! Or 'Something big's coming!'. Some cliché crap."

"T-Thank you..."

Futaba looks at the Ann, "Isn't it the same with you and Akira? What's the difference?" "What's better than fighting shadows and what big thing is coming?"

She chuckles, "Well she has done more than me and Akira have." "Now you don't need to know that dear."

Futaba shrugs, "Oh. You mean what Carmen always talks about. Maybe I should look it up." "Why not? Is it bad?"

Haru quickly shakes her head, "You should ask Sojiro-san because it's better to ask a family member or someone who you know well." "Usually I wouldn't care how old you are but you kind of lack the equipment for that."

Once Futaba nods, Ann smiles at her, "So Futaba, talk to any guys online? I heard that people had met online and actually started dating." "Hmm, times really have changed if you can court someone from far away and over a machine."

"The only guy I talk to is Yuuki and we play together online." "He's really nice! Even though he kind of used our group...But we understand why!"

Haru looks at her confused, "Yuuki?" She then smiles, "Oh! He's the one that runs the Phansite. I feel bad that I had forgotten about him." "Eh, it's easy to forget about someone so pathetic."

Ann sighs, "He was just as much of a victim as we were when we were dealing with Kamoshida. So don't be too harsh on him...Milady." She shakes her head and smiles at Futaba, "So, when did you two start talking?"

"It was when I asked Akira to help me with my list. We went to the diner and wanted to talk to someone my own age. That's when Yuuki show up and I called him, NPC." "That means, nonplayable character!" "But Akira went to the bathroom and we talked about videos games then exchanged usernames." "Oh! He also took Futaba-chan to the electronic store when Akira was busy!" "It was in September."

Hifumi smiles, "I think Akira was trying to get you and this guy together. I remember when he said that he had to grab something and left me and Ryuji together."

Ann gasps and looks at Futaba, "What!? He didn't tell me anything! And it was my idea to get you two together! Darn, I would've invited Mishima here if I knew that." "Aw! Why didn't Arsene say anything..."

She looks back at her confused, "Really? How do you know if you like someone? He leveled up from npc to a key item like Akira. But it feels different." "Also! Her heart starts beating fast whenever she's by Yuuki-kun and and even faster when she looks at him!"

Haru smiles when she hears Necro talk about her heart beating, "That means that you do like him more than a friend." "Wow...Even someone as pathetic as Mishima can get a girl to like him."

"Oh...That makes sense." She nods, "Then when am I supposed to tell him?" "W-We have to tell him...? Necro says shyly when she hears that Futaba may like Yuuki more than a friend.

Ann smiles, "Well you should do it whenever you're ready to talk about it with Mishima and don't worry about getting really nervous. I was like that when I told Akira my feelings." "It's alright Necro. You won't be the one doing it so no need to be shy about it."

She nods, "Got it." "O-Okay, Carme...I'll try not to be..."

Makoto was sitting at one of the tables looking at Ann and the other girls talking. But that's when Sae joins her, "Why aren't you with your friends?"

"Huh?" Makoto looks at her sister not noticing that she had sat down, "Oh...hello, sis. Um...there's a reason for that..." "Maybe you should ask your sister, Makoto-san."

She puts a hand on her hand, "I know that I haven't been a sister as of late. But I want to try and do that now. So, don't be afraid to tell me what's troubling you."

After Makoto nods and looks back up at her, "Alright...I-I kissed Akira without thinking...and I haven't told Ann...But what is worst, is that Akira said that he would have kept kissing me if Anat didn't stop me...So, I've been trying to avoid them..."

Sae eyes go wide in shock not expecting that but she nods knowing that she had to help her and she was just going to based it off of her cases involving spousal disagreements, "I may not know anything about relationships. But I have seen what happens when couples hid things from one another from my previous cases. Now I'm not suggesting that Ann will do something as bad as what I have seen. But, regardless, it will be best if you tell her this now or it will be worst in the long run."

She looks down knowing she was right, "I know that, I'm just afraid that I ruined their relationship...and I'm going to lose two people that are close to me and it's all my fault..."

"You can't blame yourself Makoto. I have seen how much you care about Akira and what you did wasn't payback for Ann taking Akira, you had done it out of impulse. Maybe if you explain that to her and if she truly is your friend and truly loves Akira, I am confident that she will understand."

"Knowing Ann...that is not going to happen..." She nods, "Thanks sis, I will try that..." She smiles at her, "Thank you for helping me. I know you are not used to talking about things like this."

She chuckles, "You are correct but like I had said before, I want to start being a sister to you again and these are what sisters talk about."

Smiling, Makoto puts a hand over hers, "I'm glad to hear that sis and now I feel more confident in telling Ann." She gets up, "I should go talk to her now then..." "Are you ready for this?" "No...even if I said that I'm more confident, I'm really not but I have to do this or it will get worse..."

While Ann was talking to the other girls, she sees Makoto walking over making her smile, "Well nice of you to finally join the girl talk! Can't have that without my bestie...

"C-Can we talk alone?" Makoto says interrupting her

Ann and the other girls look at her confused by her nervousness, "Sure..." She says a little worried.

"T-Thanks." She leads her to the elevator and sighs, "I'm sorry for this b-but I have to tell you something..." She looks at her with fear in her eyes, "I-I kissed Akira when I talked to him the day after he had his first psychotic breakdown..."

Ann couldn't believe what she had said, "Y-You kissed him...!?" Carmen gasps, "Anat! You've been hiding it for that long!?"

She nods slowly, "Y-Yes...But I did it out of impulse..." "I'm sorry Carmen...It was not my place to say anything...It was between Makoto or Akira to tell her..."

She glares at her, "Oh! You just happened to do it out of impulse!? So, did you not enjoy it as well!?" Carmen sighs, "I guess you're right...Did you at least stop her?"

This was another thing that she was afraid of, was that even though it was out of impulse, she did enjoy it, "Y-Yes..." "Of course, it would have made things worst..."

*SLAP*

Makoto reels back and holds her cheek after Ann slaps her making her look down while rubbing her cheek, "I'm sorry..." Anat sighs knowing that it was going to come sooner or later.

She glares harder at her, "You're sorry!? No! You're not sorry! You just told me that you enjoyed it!" Carmen sighs as well, "Ann dear, just calm down...Makoto didn't do it to hurt you."

Makoto looks at her full of regret, "Y-You're right...I-I just couldn't control myself..." "Carmen's right! She didn't do it to hurt you! It was on impulse!"

Ann looks down clinching her fists in control rage, "Did...Did he kiss you back...?" "Please say that he didn't..."

Makoto looks away, "...He told me that if...Anat didn't stop me...He would have kissed me back..." "And there it is..."

Ann looks back at her in complete shock, "W-What...! H-He said that...?" "Oh no...this is bad..."

Makoto nods slowly, "...Yes..." Her heart breaks seeing Ann start to cry because it was all her fault. Anat didn't know what to say so she just kept quiet.

Ann starts crying, "I-I-I knew it...I finally completely trust him...and-and..." She didn't know what to say other than, "W-Were no longer friends Makoto..." She takes off the ring, "I'm returning the ring...because I'm done..." Carmen gasps, "W-What are you doing!? Don't do that!? You have to hear Akira side!"

Makoto quickly shakes her head, "Please! You can't hate me but don't throw the ring away! It will devastate him!" "You're being too brash! At least talk to Akira, like Carmen said!"

Ann doesn't listen to them and rushes back to Akira

Akira was internally freaking out after seeing Ann and Makoto go talk in private, "I-Is she going to tell her..." "Are you going to go over there?" "I should..." He starts walking but then they all hear Ann saying if Makoto kissed him. That makes everyone but Sae look at him in shock, "I-It isn't what it sounds like...Somewhat..."

Sojiro sighs and shakes his head, "Then do you care to explain then?"

He sighs and looks down, "M-Makoto kissed me but I didn't kiss her...Though I wanted too..." But before anyone could respond, they see Ann marching toward him, "Ann...I'm sorry...

"I don't want to hear it...It's obvious that you want Makoto...So you can give her this..." She throws the ring on the ground right in front of him making everyone gasp in shock and she quickly rushes to the elevator, crying harder.

Akira couldn't believe it, seeing her throw the ring in front of him, broke his heart that he didn't even see her leave, "A-Ann...Do you really not want to be with me anymore...?" He knew that she would get mad but he never expected her to actually throw his ring away so he picks it up and stares at it. "I would say you should chase after her...but maybe you shouldn't...I honestly don't know."

Sojiro holds his shoulder and looks at everyone, "Could any of you go talk to Ann?"

Ryuji shakes his head, "Shit...I don't think it any of us should talk to her..." "I am nah sayin' anythin' in case I make things worst..."

Morgana goes next to Akira, "Why would you hide that Makoto kissed you? Do you not care about Ann?" "Now is your chance Morgana! Go and convince her to be with you instead!"

Makoto appears and quickly walks over to Akira full of sadness, "I-I-I'm sorry Akira..." "Maybe Carmen can stop her...She was against Ann, uh...throwing the ring away..."

Akira looks up at her, "Why couldn't you just wait for me or just tell me that you were going to do it? I'm not mad at you but it would have been better with we did it together...But it doesn't matter anymore, I guess we're done..." "You don't sound too upset about it." "I honestly want to cry right now...But I want to wait till I'm alone..."

Sae sighs, "Don't blame her, Akira. I was not expecting Ann to get that upset..."

He scoffs, "It's because you don't know her that well...Hell, at all..." "Yeah...Now you're starting to worry me..." "I'm sorry but I just want to be alone right now..." He starts heading to the elevator butthat's when they hear the elevator doors open from how quiet the area was making everyone look.

And soon they see who came up, "Happy birthday, my son!" "Happy birthday, Akira!"

Akira looks at the two in shock, "Mother...and Emily...?"

Reiko smiles, "Why are you so surprised? It's your birthday. You really think I wouldn't visit my son for his birthday? Ann invited me and I brought along Emily."

Emily sighs looking down, "I didn't want to come at first cuz I didn't want to make things awkward but I wanted to um...see you again and wish you a happy birthday!"

Akira gives them a small smile, "Well I'm happy to see you both..."

Looking around, Reiko doesn't notice Ann, "Speaking of Ann, where is she? This was her idea, wasn't it? Besides, I doubt she would remove herself from your side, my son."

That's when his face drops when she says that, "We...had a falling out because I did something stupid." He then explains it to her

Reiko sighs, "Well I think she went overboard. I understand that you both haven't done more than makeout so it would make sense but I think it's more like she thinks Makoto would be better for you than her. Just by how she said it was 'obvious' that you love Makoto and it seems like she has been thinking about it for a while." She laughs seeing their shock and confusion, "Don't give me those looks, I know a lot about problems in a relationship."

Makoto sighs, "By why would she think that...?" "Maybe because you've always been there for Akira and you haven't gotten mad at him."

"Well that's up to you to ask that."

Akira quickly shakes his head, "Yeah...that's definitely not going to happen. She's angry at me and she will not talk to Makoto..." "I think it was more than anger..."

Haru looks at him, "I could possibly do it but I'm not sure what to say..." "Maybe Akira should just bang Makoto or shit, maybe Emily, problem solved."

Reiko walks up to Akira and hugs him, "You should think about this later. Right now, just enjoy your birthday. I know it will be hard but I'll be here and your friends will be here as well."

He pulls away, "Okay...I'll try to mother..." "I agree with your mother Akira..."

Emily looks at him, "Do you know where she might go?"

"I'm not sure...I know not home but maybe in Inokashira Park...That's where we first started hanging out and she told me that she usually goes there to think..."

"Alright." And as soon as they look the opposite way, she quickly slips out to go find Ann at the park.

[End Notes: Well now the Ann and Emily are going to have their conversation and it may or may not turn physical and that's the only thing I'm going to say in the end notes besides maybe one more surprise. Oh one thing, I don't know it Naoto revealed herself as a girl to the police so I'm just going to assume that they think that he's a man unless someone says differently.]
