I do not remember where this quote came from, but I've seen it floating around tumblr lately, so here you go.
"So, how's life with a newborn, Elena?"
The question took her by surprise. Caroline had barely made it through the door before asking; she suspected nerves were the thing that prompted her if the hand on her swollen belly was any indication, but she was too exhausted to be certain.
"Horrible," she closed her eyes and raked a hand through her wet hair. "I didn't know a person could cry this much and I just want to make it stop."
"I'm sure the kid will grow out of it," Klaus patted her shoulder.
"Oh no," Elena's eyes widened, "the baby's an angel!" She thought of her well behaved newborn daughter who loved nothing more than being cuddled by her parents. "She's no trouble at all."
The monitor on Elena's hip crackled and they heard the unmistakable sound of a newborn's gurgle. The gentle noise made her heart warm and glow within her chest.
A line appeared between Caroline's golden eye brows. "But you said…"
The monitor crackled again and this time they heard the choked sob of a man over the rustle of blankets.
"I love you so much."
She knew there would be tears in his eyes. She couldn't blame Elijah since she sobbed around their newborn just as much as he did.
"Was that…?" Klaus pointed to the monitor. A wicked twinkle entered his eyes.
Elena was too tired to even attempt to halt her nod.
"Excellent," his full lips rose up in a smirk, "excuse me, ladies."
He took off, bounding up the stairs two at a time on silent feet, and pulled out his cell phone along the way.
"Care," she linked arms with her friend, "do me a favor?" She steered them into the kitchen where de-caffeinated coffee awaited them.
"You want me to stop Klaus from taking that picture?" She guessed.
"No," she sighed, "let him keep it. Just make sure you get a picture of Klaus in the delivery room after," she patted her friend's round belly, "and send it to me."
