She was leaned against the wall next to her window, contemplating whether or not to cook something there or go to the cafeteria for a late dinner when her thoughts were interrupted.
Her patrol alarm was going off in the other room.
She didn't waste any time in changing her clothes, quickly slipping on a pair of trainers and barely paused as she picked her keys along with her patrol alarm up before she went out.
Issy jogged down the stairs, not bothering with the lift, and as she hit the ground level she broke into a run. Some people swore at her as she almost barged past them, others got out of her way as they took one look at the determined expression on her face, her eyes bright and deadly. Issy almost took another guy to the ground as they had both came from opposite directions but as they were unaware to where the other was going, they had arced out to turn down the same tunnel. Instead of avoiding each other, Issy barged into him with enough force to send him staggering into the wall. She had thrown a quick sorry over her shoulder as she carried on running with the guy swearing somewhere behind her.
Unlike before, the door to the garage was firmly closed. She slowed to a stop in front of it and quickly swiped her key and the door clicked open. Just as the door edged shut, someone shouted out from behind her.
"WAIT! HOLD THE DOOR!"
She caught the door before it closed and turned to see the guy she nearly knocked over. He caught up with her and thanked. Then he looked up.
Issy gasped quietly, both of their eyes wide. He analysed her eyes just as she did the same with his. While hers were glowing brightly gold, his were completely different; one a light sky blue, the other a forest green. The old Erudite within her knew exactly what it was. Heterochromia iridium. Light brown hair framed his face and made his eyes more vibrant.
She shook her head, before carrying on at a slower pace until she found where all the captains and a few of the squaddies were gathered. She noticed out of the corner of her eye that the guy followed her at a distance. Another squaddie then. Issy joined Billy who was already waiting and stood with him.
Little under half an hour later, all of the squaddies filled the garage again. Harrison walked in just as the squads were getting into their formations. The Leader nodded to the captains, who then joined their squads. He stood in front of them all with a tablet in his hands which probably had the new schedules on. He fiddled with it for a moment until he looked back up.
"Thank you all for waiting. These past few days I have been going over each squad and working out where they would be the most efficient. Now I have made my decision." He glanced back down to his tablet as he began to read. "At the Abnegation Barracks will be Squadron 109 –" Groans came from somewhere behind them and Harrison shot them an apologetic look as he carried on. "At the Erudite Barracks will be Squadrons 179 and 124. At the Amity Barracks will be Squadrons 232, 167 and 226 –"
Issy exhaled. Their squad would be going to Amity for the next few weeks. It was the most remote barracks that Dauntless had. She didn't hear what other squads will be going to the other barracks, it became background noise. She refocused when Red nudged her.
"– For those who will be remaining of the compound, your rotas will start in five days' time so that you can all learn the new routes you will be taking. Those of you who will be at the barracks, you will all leave at six a.m. tomorrow. Although, I will advise the squadrons who will be placed at Amity, you should all leave an hour prior to that." Harrison holds his tablet behind his back as he surveys them all. "For those of you on the new routes, you guys are dismissed. Your captains will be emailed the new information tonight for the next day." More than half of the squads walk out of the garage until only a few remain. "Now for you lot, the captains on the barracks will all be equal with each other. The information packs about what will be expected of you during your time at the barracks is already there. I suggest you all revise it once you get there and start the next day. You are all dismissed."
An arm slid across her shoulders and guided her out of the room. Issy couldn't focus. Amity. She had to tell her brothers, to tell her family but doing it over text didn't seem right. Though, it was now nearly nine at night and time was running out. Issy needed to get some sleep. She needed to pack the rest of her stuff.
"– Issy?" Someone shook her shoulders and she looked up to Hector. They were out of the garage and somewhere down the hallway. She hadn't notice they were walking. "Focus Golden Eyes. We'll do a quick sweep around the compound and hopefully we'll find some of our family and they can pass the word on to the others, okay?"
She nodded her head and allowed Hec to lace his hand with hers as he pulled her along at a quick pace. They checked the cafeteria first with no luck. And then around the shops, also no luck. Issy got the idea that Hector was at the breaking point when they jogged to the bar they kept to when they finally saw Kayden.
"KAYDEN!" He shouted over the crowds, but Kayden only twitched his head to the side.
"KAYDEN!" Issy shouted and Kayden turned around and searched the crowds, obviously hearing his name but not seeing the source.
Issy and Hec traded glances as they sighed. "KAYDEN!" Both of them shouted and Kayden's head snapped to them.
He grinned then waved at them before gesturing to come over. He was sat with her brothers, but the rest of their family didn't seem to be in sight. Hector let go of her hand as they neared the table.
"What's up sister?" Alec said and she opened her mouth to reply when she caught Declan's gaze. He already knew. Although, there was something else in his eyes that sent shivers up her spine. He also knew something that she didn't.
Hector took over for her, glancing between her and Dec as he filled them in. By the end of the explanation, they all had downcast looks.
"For how long?" Kayden asked.
Issy shrugged. "Until further notice." Hector checked his watch and sighed. Issy caught the time as he angled it towards her. 21:48. "We better get some sleep. Leaving at five so early start tomorrow." Hec began walking away with a small wave. He patted Issy on the back, knowing they'd see each other in a few hours anyway before taking off towards South block. Issy slowly began taking steps back too. "I'll guess I'll see you when I see you next." She had turned and started to walk out of the bar when a hand grabbed at her arm.
"Issy!"
She ripped her arm out of his hold. "Declan I need to go."
"You need to know! He's said –"
She allowed herself to be swept up by the crowd. "Tell me when I get back!" She yelled back as the gap between them got bigger and bigger. Her eldest brother struggled to push through the sea of black.
"ISSY!"
She ignores him, too tired to care, and leaves him shouting her name in the Pit.
xXx
To say Issy was tired the next morning would be an understatement. She was knackered. But she got to the garage with her bag packed by half four. There weren't that many people in the garage, other than a few captains and those destined for Amity.
The night before Geek had packed all of their rifles into the truck with any other necessities from their lockers. Their bags were already in the back of the truck too. This allowed them enough time to inhale a few coffees as they waited for the other squads to finish getting ready.
Squadron 226 were all lounging against their truck, some were sat on the floor and others stood against it. Issy had her helmet in her lap as she clutched a recyclable cup of coffee. she watched the other squads shuffle around placing rifles and bags in their trucks. She watched as Uriah sigh as he took a sip of his coffee, sighing happily. She was happy to know that Uriah was in one of the accompanying squad, but she was equally surprised to find out that the guy with mysterious eyes from yesterday was in the same squad.
It was ten to five when the captains traded nods and the squaddies began climbing into their own trucks and starting the engines. There was a loud alarm and flashing amber lights as the garage doors rolled up and Squadron 167's truck braked so another truck could drive into the compound. Issy thought nothing of it as she mounted her bike and revved her engine. The truck rolled to a stop and weary soldiers clambered out of it. Issy slid her helmet on and waited for Captain's signal. She didn't think anything of it until a Dauntless soldier slammed the truck door shut behind him. Weeks, mouths even, of stubble had grown into a thick beard framing his jaw. It almost made him unrecognisable. Except when she caught his eyes with hers. Somewhere in front of her, Captain signalled her as 226's truck began to follow the other two as they slowly drove out. Though she wasn't focused on that… Steely blue eyes stared back at her. He mouthed her name, distress and realisation painting his face.
"BETA!" Her radio in her helmet crackled to life and she winced away from the sudden sound. "LETS GO!" The trucks were only just out of the compound and had started to gain speed when Captain had looked back.
Issy shook her head and took off after them, her bike wobbling a bit as her hands trembled slightly. She willed herself not to think off Eric, who stood in the garage staring after her.
