Izo stared at Ocean Apprentice across the way from him. Both of them had been sparring hard with one another, trying to win. Wind Master did not like it very much that the two of them had grown closer, but she had convinced him to tolerate their friendship. Ice Master pointed out that when they grew older, they would be running the shinobi together along with Stocky Apprentice, and therefore should be allowed to bond. Wind Master seemed to begrudgingly accept that fact.
Ocean Apprentice was gathering up the snow, melting it and turning it to a ball of water around her. Fresh water was harder for her to work with than salt water, what she had told him. She gathered up a football sized amount in her hands before throwing it towards him in attack. He froze most of it before it hit him. It knocked him down with the speed of it. The water remaining with it splash down his front. He felt irked by that, knowing it would maker him colder, maybe even shiver. He noticed the cold up here, at least a little bit. Not as bad as Mother ever had.
He summoned up his ice dragon, ready to throw ice shards, which Ice Master had shown him how to do, towards her. He threw a handful. She gathered up snow, melted it and used it as a shield to protect herself from the ice shards. She managed it in the like, but he kept going, kept throwing the ice shards at her. She kept shielding herself, but he kept throwing. Finally, he broke through her shield. He had never managed to get past her water shield before and was internally joyful to have finally done so. His ice shards dug into her arms as she protected her face and neck.
She cried out, furious that he broke through her shield. He summoned away his ice dragon. They were training together, so she should not have been surprised at him for finally gaining a victory over her. She stomped over at him temperamentally. She seemed more furious than usual. He held out his hands to heal her arms, but she smacked them away.
"I don't want your healing," she grumbled, shoving past him.
Beyond Wind Master, the other men were snickering at her reaction. Wind Master went after her, laughing to himself. Rock Master commented she was just mad that someone bested her water shield for once and Izo had proven she was not invincible that way. Wind Master managed to bring her back over to Izo, insisting on her letting him heal her.
Ocean Apprentice pouted at that, holding her arms out silently for him to heal. Wind Master hovered over between the two of them, watching. Izo felt self conscience and hesitant to even touch her while being watched. He felt no attraction to her beyond platonic friendship. Also, she had commented in their conversations that he was not something she was looking for, even with her throwing a side long glance over at Stocky Apprentice once when she was saying something. Did not seem to lessen her father's guard though.
As Izo healed her, Wind Master asked, "where did you learn how to heal?"
Izo glanced up at him, but then immediately back down at Ocean Apprentice's arms. He had not realized how deeply the ice shards had cut into her. No wonder he made her come back to him. "A friend of my father's, Yukina," he said. He added, "And Asa, my grandmother for lack of a better term."
"The elvish healer, Asa?" he asked curious. "She's still up and about?"
Izo nodded. "Yep. She married my grandfather after my sister and I were born. She showed me the basics, but Yukina, my father's friend, was the one who helped me hone my skills on the rare occasions I saw her." He redoubled his efforts on healing Ocean Apprentice's arms, recalling what Yukina taught him. Knit bone first, muscle second, tissue third, blood vessels next, and skin last. Don't rush through it as it could cause even greater injury. If an injury is healed incorrectly, it cannot be re-healed again. It's stuck the way it was botched.
"You talk about your da an awful lot," Wind Master said in a bit of a tight tone.
Izo kept his mouth closed, thinking before he spoke. He needed to speak in a way that would not remind Wind Master or the others of his mother nor elvish grandfather. "He wouldn't care," he answered.
"He trained you up?" Wind Master pressed.
"With fighting, yes," he answered.
"He trained your mother up, too," Wind Master kept going.
Izo felt uncomfortable with where the conversation might be heading. "He did. Down South where she grew up."
"She could hold her own in a fight when she got up to the capital. When the king paraded her around the training yards of the castle," he quipped. Izo nodded, not sure where to go with the conversation, but certainly did not want to upset the Wind Master, even if he seemed to be looking for an argument. He focused on healing Ocean Apprentice. "She liked it there. That and the hippogriffs," he commented wistfully.
Izo stood there, waiting for anymore conversation from him. He finished healing Ocean Apprentice. She punched him in the shoulder playfully when he was finished. "You'll not break my shield again. Ever again, you got that," she got his face when she told him that. She left him after that, flouncing away with an unexpected amount of confidence. She went back into her own tent.
Wind Master shook his head as she walked away. "Just like her ma there," he commented, almost smiling to himself. "Your ma would have been humbler," he added in. Izo nodded, breathing easier to see no arguments were made thankfully. "Asa's alright in my book. She took one look at your ma that night I took her to her tent for healing, and was hell bent on adopting her as her own as much as possible. Wild, young, naive thing." Wind Master looked Izo over, making him watch edging again. "She raised your ma better, I hope than that uncle of hers. She certainly needed it. She seemed to do well with yourself," added.
Just like Ocean Apprentice had, he gave Izo a jovial punch in the shoulder.
