"He didn't steal it." Jaden said calmly when she and the others had snuck in to go get a quick sneak peak at the most famous deck of them all only to see the glass box smashed and the deck gone with Crowler in the room. Almost as soon as they had seen him in the room and that the deck was gone Syrus and Alexis began blaming Crowler for stealing the deck, Bastion had remained quiet. No need to give the Head of the Blue dorm another reason to hate him after all. Just being near Jaden and knowing her secret seemed to be enough of a reason already…well in the vice-chancellor's books that is.
"But Jaden-!" Syrus began but Jaden shook her head in the negative once and the boy fell silent. He knew that while Jaden was often reckless and the first to jump into danger…the boy was almost always right when he followed his instincts and gut feelings. It had saved them a good bit of grief before after all so Syrus trusted the taller boy with the Kuriboh styled hair.
"Dr. Crowler has a key. He's the Vice-chancellor of the school and only he and Chancellor Sheppard have the key to the box. Why is it smashed in then?" Jaden asked making them blink a bit as they noticed that tidbit of information. Actually now that they were thinking about it…It was true, when the deck was first announced many people had mentioned how easy it would be to just pick the lock but had been told that the box was shut with a multi-lock involving a number sequence and a key and the only keys were held by the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor who also had the number sequence. Of course that had caused a few angry grumbles about how Crowler might steal the deck before letting any students in Red see it but those weren't anything to be worried about since he would never do that.
"Besides we came in less than a minute after he did. He would have had no time to smash the glass, steal the deck, hide it, and then brush all the glass off of himself before we came in. He wouldn't have even been able to hide it because there's nowhere in here nor on his person where he could hide it." Jaden said calmly and making the others nod slowly as they began to realize the logic of this. After all Crowler's coat had pockets yes but he would have had no time to brush off the glass and stash the deck in one without at least one or two cards falling out.
"No...it wasn't Doctor Crowler. Someone else smashed in the glass and made off with the deck before he entered the room. And they managed to do it without security noticing." Jaden said making the others think about it for a long moment. None of them had noticed anyone unusual entering or leaving aside from themselves and each other but that wasn't very long ago...They had only avoided some of the normal security patrols…Jaden's eyes narrowed.
So they were either dealing with a master thief or someone who could fool the security guards into thinking that they belonged here.
"Let's spread out and find the true culprit. I doubt that they'll be very subtle in suddenly having the deck of the King." Jaden said making the others nod and begin to move about, Jaden waited until everyone else was out of the room before looking at Bastion and her father.
"There's a strong surge of duel energy and shadows. I'm guessing whoever took the deck is trying to tap into it's powers and will end up starting a shadow game by accident. We have to make sure no one else duels him before someone immune to or resistant to Shadow Magic does." Jaden said making them both look dead serious and nod their heads in agreement. Jaden, or rather Lilith, having explained to Bastion about Shadow Magic and how she was able to pass off as a normal human most of the time because she fed off it.
"Can you sense where it's coming from? The surge of shadow magic?" Bastion asked making Jaden frown and furrow her eyebrows as she tried to focus on it, her eyes turning golden and purple as she did so.
"It's spread out thinly across most of the island but there's a stronger concentration of it coming from near the coast...probably over by The Cliff or the lighthouse?" Jaden said after concentrating for a moment and making them nod slowly as they absorbed that information.
"So we need to check the Cliff and lighthouse before anyone else does. I'll check the cliff." Crowler said and he moved to leave the room before he stopped and glared at Bastion.
"I'll be trusting you to keep her safe in case of anything strange happening. If there's so much as a scratch on her..." Crowler threatened with a dark glare making Bastion gulp nervously.
"Understood sir." Bastion said while Jaden merely sighed and gave her father a fondly amused look.
"You realize that he has no experience with Shadow Magic right? Likely I will be the one protecting him." Jaden pointed out and making Crowler and Bastion both frown at that. It wasn't that they minded her protecting Bastion, in fact Bastion thought it was quite the obvious that the half vampire girl would be able to protect herself and others, it was that since she was going to be so busy protecting everyone else she wouldn't think to protect herself.
Bastion made a mental note to look up more ways of self-defense and how to deal with Shadow Magic. It wasn't like they would have to deal with it often, but it was better to be safe rather than sorry.
Because honestly what were the odds of them facing strong Shadow Magic ever again, or at least while they were at the school?
