Chapter 2
Rachel quickly put her head down and tried to concentrate on the man on the floor, trying to hide her face.
He attacked my husband. thank god my Lucas was there to stop him. But look at the mess! Emily explained frantically.
Your Lucas? Judy raised an eyebrow. She knew the Weldon's well. She had assisted to Lucas' funeral after all. She turned and a shiver ran along her spine as she looked at Lucas alive and well. All blood left her face.
Sheriff? Asked Mrs Weldon, snapping Judy out of her frozen pose.
Yeah?
One of the officers kneeled beside Rachel taking over for her. Rachel quickly left the room and ran outside back to the wooden area. She couldn't breathe no matter how hard she tried. She realised she was having a panic attack and tried to control her breathing. Forcing herself to breathe by the nose and exhaling from the mouth. After a few moments she had manage to calm down a bit.
Back inside the house Judy managed to take the disposition of Dr. And Mrs Weldon, but she kept eying Lucas. The man was the father of his patient and sadly his son passed away earlier in the evening and the man, Robert Jax, had drowned his sorrows in a bottle and ended up at the house accusing the doctor for the death of his son. She knew Sam and Dean were on the case and for now they didn't know what could be responsible for the kids dying in Sioux Falls.
The ambulance finally arrived and took over taking care of the man. They quickly put the wounded man on the stretcher.
Whoever took it upon themselves to apply pressure, Mr. Jax, saved your life... said the paramedic as they rolled him out of the house.
Who took care of him? asked Jody.
Lucas' girlfriend, odd little number to tell you the truth... He can't sue us right? I mean we want to sue him for entering and attempted murder! Emily said.
Jody walked up to Lucas who was holding a crying blond girl, his girlfriend, she assumed.
How long have you been... back? Jody asked unsure of what to ask the man who died a year ago.
This morning, we're on vacation here, my girlfriend and I.
And... where were you?
New York. I moved a year ago, new job offer and all...
Right, well... I'll let the officers take your disposition... Jody said before walking out of the house and quickly pulling her phone out of her pocket. She dialed a speed number and waited four rings before someone answered.
This better be important. Growled Bobby, on the other end.
Oh it is... I'm coming over now.
Then why did you call if you- hello? She hung up... Bobby said as he hung up the phone and turned to Sam and Dean who were researching their latest case.
Maybe she has something about the kids? Suggested Sam.
I can't wait to get my hands on that son of a bitch. Mumbled Dean before getting up and poured himself another whiskey. He hated when his cases involved children.
Fifteen minutes later Jody opened the door and walked inside. Her expression quickly worried them and she had all of their attention.
Whatever is making the kids fall ill, I think I know who is responsible for it.
Who? Asked Dean
Dr. Weldon.
We did a background check... He was clear. Sam added
Yeah? I received a call for a break in at his house, some poor father was grief stricken and needed someone to blame and guess who was there!?
Who? Asked Sam
Lucas Weldon.
What!? Asked Bobby surprised. Dean's eyes widened but he didn't say anything.
As in... Started Sam
Rachel's dead boyfriend. Jody continued.
Sam quickly made his way to his computer and started tapping on the keyboard. Dean started pacing, deep in thought.
So, we're looking for something strong enough to resurrect the dead... Why would it aim kids though?
I'm on it. Bobby said and walked to the book shelf picking a few books before making his way to his desk.
There's no more records or article about Lucas's death, whatever brought him back... It's strong enough to have wiped any trace of his death.
I'll get back to the office see if we have any written records about it...
We should ask Castiel-
No! Barked Dean at his brother. The less they needed him the better, in his opinion. Things hadn't been the same since the angel back stabbed them in letting Rachel sacrifice herself. No matter how many times he tried to explain to Dean why he did it, saying they truly only had one option to destroy Legion. He had lost Dean's trust ever since, only letting Sam call him in desperate times.
What do you mean Lucas is alive? Castiel asked, appearing in the room, questioning Sam's prayer. Dean rolled his eyes as he lifted his hands in defeat.
After a quick recap of what Judy found Castiel thought for a moment.
So what would be strong enough to bring him back? Asked Sam.
And erase any trace of him ever being dead? Jody, you said he was there, talking to you? Did he seem nervous?
No, and seeing I was the one on the case when he and Rachel disappeared and all... neither of them seemed to hide the fact he was back to life... It was like the most normal thing that he was there.
You're dealing with an Angel. Castiel said and all of them froze.
What!? Sam and Dean asked in union.
Only an angel would have the power to bring back the dead without leaving any trace or what I did for you, with Lisa and Ben... Castiel said.
Why would an angel kill innocent children? Asked Bobby.
I don't think both events are related... But I'll ask around. Castiel said and vanished.
Why would a damn angel bring HIM back, when god knows I... Dean trailed off as his voice cracked with emotion and then he grabbed his jacket and stormed outside.
He's about to do something stupid isn't he? Jody asked them.
Yup, On it! Sam said shutting his laptop and grabbing his coat before running out the door.
DEAN! Sam called out as he ran to the impala.
Dean opened the passenger's side door and Sam jogged his way to the car and got in. Dean sped off down the road. For a moment neither talked.
Dean, we can't just barge in, in the middle of night. What if he really doesn't know how he got back? Or what if his parents don't even remember he was dead in the first place? We need more info before we do anything.
Dean ignored his brother and pulled in front of the house on oak road, putting Baby on park. After a moment of Dean watching the house Sam cleared his throat.
What now?
Dean was silent for a long moment before he got out of the car started to walk to the end of the road, followed closely by Sam. Once he arrived at the private cemetery he easily jumped up the brick wall and Sam did the same. Dean turned on his flash light and started looking for the familiar tomb stone.
Sure enough, no sign of Lucas' grave. Dean let out a frustrated sigh.
Once the cops had left the house Rachel ran upstairs to her room. She quickly pulled out her suit case from under the bed and threw it open on top of it. She made her way to the dresser and grabbed her clothes throwing them inside the case.
She couldn't stay a minute longer. It was a miracle Jody didn't recognize her and she had managed to slip out of there before she did. She went to the bathroom to get a few things and when she walked back into the room she met a very confused Lucas.
What the hell are you doing!?
Rachel's eyes widened as she finally realised Jody might also remember about Lucas' death.
Did the sheriff say anything to you? Did she seem... odd or something?
She seemed stunned to see me, guess my dad must have mention me moving...She did ask how long was I back and soon left after, but-
We have to get out of here, now. Rachel said grabbing his suit case and flopping it on the bed.
What? Rachel what the hell is going on?
Rachel stopped a minutes and looked up to Lucas.
What did you do? You're clearly running from the cops so... What did you do?
Rachel wished she could tell Lucas, but she knew if she would, she'd probably end up in a looney bin.
N- Nothing. I just... What happened tonight, all that blood... Rachel lied convincingly.
Rachel... Lucas said lovingly and pulled her into his arms.
You saved that poor father's life, I know it must have been scary as hell for you... But it's over, he'll be fine Ray. It's over.
I'd... I'd just would feel safer home. Please Lucas, can we just go home? She begged.
Babe, I haven't seen my family in a year, we just got here... Believe me father will have extra security at the house till he figures out a cure for the sick kids. There's no reason to not feel safe here. Lucas said as he pulled away from her and put back his suit case under the bed.
Rachel desperately tried to find another reason to get back to New York, but nothing came to mind and she sighed in defeat, nodding at Lucas before emptying her suitcase.
Soon after, they went to bed. Rachel tossed and turned till she was fed up. She grabbed her laptop and started researching what could be possibly responsible for the illness.
The next morning...
I got it! Rachel yelled and Lucas sat up straight in bed.
Wh- what?!
Oh! I'm sorry baby... Go back to sleep. Rachel said as she double check the information she had gotten from her old notes from the books she had read and the medical forms she had managed to hack earlier.
Rachel was pretty sure a Shtriga was responsible. They would feed the life out of children and if she wanted a chance to get him, considering the time of the outburst of sick and dying children, she would have to hurry up.
Nah, it's fine... Imma shower before my run. Lucas said before kissing the top of her head and hopping out of bed.
Rachel nervously tapped her fingers, how was she supposed to fight a shtriga, alone. She had to figure a way to tell someone about her findings. She somehow had to get the message to Jody or Bobby.
Dean was running, even though he knew he couldn't get there in time he pushed harder, ran faster.
GET DOWN! He heard but ignored till he was tackled to the grown just as an explosion blinded him a moment.
Rachel!
Dean woke up in a start, taking a moment to regain a normal heart rate. Even though the dream haunted him every night, he couldn't help but feel his heart ache just like the night it happened. Once he got control of his emotions, he stretched out as much as he could, cramped up in the impala, but it wasn't good enough, so he got out of the car and stretched his back, moaning as his spine cracked. He put his hands on the roof of the car and bent over, seeing Sam peacefully sleeping. He smiled before pushing himself off the car and slamming the door shut. Sam jumped so much he hit his head on the roof of the car, making Dean smile even more.
Morning sleeping ugly! Dean greeted cheerfully, opening the car door and settling in the driver's seat.
You're an asshole...
Is that walking dead, four o'clock? Dean asked with a head gesture and Sam looked to his right and saw Lucas stretch before starting to run up the street.
Yeah... That's him.
Guess it's time for your morning jog too Sammy.
Right... he answered rolling his eyes before getting out of the car and started jogging to where Lucas had headed.
Dean started the impala and turned on the radio tapping his fingers on the wheel of the car to the beat of the music till his phone rang, it was Bobby.
What do you have for me Bobby?
Jody called, seems like there's absolutely no trace of Lucas... Or anything about... anything that happened a year ago...
You mean...
No trace of Lucas... or Rachel.
Wh- wh- what does that mean, there's no trace of Rachel?
I'm not sure son...
Dean stopped listening as a small silhouette covered in a black hoodie quickly walked out of the gates and made its way up the street, nervously looking back a few times.
I'll call you back. Dean said quickly to Bobby as he turned off the engine and quickly got out of the car.
He managed to follow the silhouette, without being noticed, to the police station and made his way to the parking lot, crouching down behind a cop car as the silhouette made its way to Jody's car. He quickly pulled out his gun and silently made his way to the car. When the person bent over the wind shield, Dean quickly went behind the small body, pointing his gun to its back.
Hand's up! Dean barked.
Small shaky hands made their way up, one hand was holding an envelope.
Jody walked into the parking lot, to get some drinkable coffee, when she noticed Dean holding someone at gun point next to her car.
Dean! Jody yelled, also pulling out her gun and slowly making her way to the other side of the car.
Followed this one from the Weldon's mansion right to your car... Dean explained, not flinching from his stand.
Once Jody faced whoever Dean had at gun point, the color drained from her face as she slowly lowered her gun.
Oh my god... He heard Jody barely whisper.
Dean looked at Judy confused but the later never took her eyes off the hooded person.
Dean took two steps back, keeping a deadly aim.
Turn around! He barked, but the silhouette didn't budge.
NOW! He said louder, making the small person jump.
The person turned around, but kept its head down. Dean, rolling his eyes, took a step, pulling off the hood, revealing red locks tumbling down her shoulders. When she lifted her head he met terrified grey ones, that haunted his dreams at night.
Dean froze a moment before snapping out of it, taking a step back, aiming his gun again.
What are you!? He asked with a tight throat as a tear rolled down his cheek. Whoever was wearing Rachel was going to pay, Dean would make sure of it.
Dean... Rachel breathed. She couldn't believe he was standing in front of her. But with the look in his eyes, she was scared for her life.
Dean, put the gun down, someone's coming. Jody said as she saw two officers come out of the office.
Dean, forcefully turned `Rachel` around, holding her tightly around the arm as he pressed the gun painfully in her back as he pushed her into a close ally, followed closely by Jody.
Once they reached the ally, Dean slammed Rachel hard against the brick wall quickly replacing the gun with a silver knife at her throat. Rachel yelped and blinked a few times to keep focus.
Oh god, Dean please... It's me. It's really me. Rac-
SHUT UP! Dean growled slamming her again against the wall and pressing the blade harder on the throat.
Rachel started breathing unevenly as panic started to fill her. Her eyes darted at Jody, for help, but Jody only backed away pulling her phone out of her pocket.
Where are you? We have a situation here... The ally next to the police station.
For a long moment Rachel's pleading eyes met Dean's cold ones. She never seen his eyes so empty of emotion and it scared the hell out of her. She wanted to tell him that she wasn't someone wearing her but she was afraid of what Dean would do if she tried to talk again. She barely could keep focus with the pain she had in the back of her head since the last blow with the wall.
What. Are. You. Dean demanded.
Before Rachel could answer they heard tires screech to a stop and then she saw Sam run towards them. For a moment he froze too and Rachel couldn't help holding a small sob and it escaped her trembling lips.
For a long time she didn't even know if they were really still alive. Seeing the three of them in front of her, Rachel felt a small wave of relief. But the sharp pain from the blade brought her back to the present situation. Panic took over and she tried to push Dean off of her. She weakly tried to get out of his grip.
Oh! C'mon! She could have kicked my ass without even lifting a finger! Stop playing the weaken damsel in distress and TELL ME! What are you!?
HUMAN! Rachel yelled back in adrenaline.
I'm human! And... and you're hurting me please just... let go.
Sam came up to Rachel and without saying a word opened up a bottle of holy water and splash a heavy amount in her face. Rachel jumped at the cold water but then understood what he was doing.
Right, see... Not a demon! If, if I'd be wearing... me... well, I'd be a shapeshifter right? Is that silver? Go on... Cut. Rachel said frantically.
Dean raised an eyebrow at her and quickly took her arm and ran the blade over a small section and Rachel hissed at the burn but nothing but red blood rushed out of the cut.
See? Dean... it's me. She said softly, looking deep into his eyes, begging him to believe her.
Dean looked up at her lost and confused as he slowly backed away from her. He cocked his head to the side as she saw every emotion pass in his eyes as they watered a bit. Jody and Sam were in shock and didn't talk, they could only stare at the person they loved as family and mourned, standing right in front of them.
H- How? Dean asked softly chocking the word out.
Remph. Castiel said as he appeared behind Sam.
Dean looked even more confused but never took his eyes off of her.
It was, as he put it, an appreciation gift, for saving the world. He sent her and Lucas back on earth. I just... got the information. Castiel explained.
Rachel could only nod under Dean's intense gaze, which made her wince in pain and rubbed the back of her bruised head with her hand.
Shit. Dean said remembering how rough he had been with her a few moments ago.
He took a step towards her and hesitated to touch her, deciding to keep his hands to himself.
You alright? I didn't-
I know, I'm fine... Really. She assured him.
Silence fell again as Dean stared at her. A ghost of a smiled appeared as he tucked a strand of hair in back of her ear.
So... you're really... you? Dean said in a hoarse voice.
Yes, I'm really-
Rachel didn't get to finish her sentence as Dean pulled her little frame into his strong arms, hugging her tightly. Without even thinking she wrapped hers just as tight around his waist. Dean pulled away way too soon and before she knew it she was being crashed into another hard chest as Sam bent over and picked her up off the ground.
We missed you so much Rach! I can't believe you're really back! Sam exclaimed as she put her back down. She couldn't help but giggle at how Sam looked like an overgrown happy child.
She looked over to Jody who smiled warmly before opening her arms and making her way to Rachel, wrapping her just as tightly as the boys. She looked over Jody's shoulder and saw Castiel looking coldly at her. He didn't seem happy to see her.
She pulled away from Jody and cleared her throat.
Listen, you all deserve an explanation-
You mean how you've been back for a year and let us all think you were dead!? Castiel said in a growl, surprising everyone.
It was Rachel's turn to freeze up as all their eyes looked at her with confusion, except Castiel who looked angry.
Wh- What is he talking about? Quickly asked Dean.
Rachel's mouth opened and closed a few times but no words came out only tears of guilt slipped down her cheek. Dean huffed in disbelief and shook his head as he looked at the ground unable to look at her anymore.
Rachel!? They all heard and turned to voice at the end of the ally. Rachel's eyes widened as she saw Emily standing there staring questionably at all of them.
Shit. Rachel said under her breath and quickly wiped away her tears. Before she could react, Emily was already making her way to the group.
Mrs. Weldon! Wh- What are you doing here? Rachel said a bit too high pitched to pass a normal.
I came to the police station to place my official statement of last night's incidence... what about you? She asked eying the three men and Jody.
Once Again Rachel's mouth opened and closed without a word. With all that happened just now her brain was completely blank. Jody cleared her throat and took a step towards Emily.
I called Ms. Lee, we had a few questions for her regarding last night's events.
I knew they would find it suspicious when you ran off last night. Emily said in a stern voice.
Jody looked at Rachel, surprised she had not noticed Rachel fleeing the scene. Rachel gave her a small look back.
Yes, well, some people react differently in situations like these. I thought I'd let the shock of it all pass before we questioned her.
In an alley? Emily asked crossing her arms, not buying it.
I needed a smoke? Rachel half said and guessed.
I swear sometimes I ask myself what does my son see in you... That's a disgusting habit for a young lady such as yourself. Emily said, wrinkling her nose in distaste and turned to Jody.
Are you done with her?
Hm... Yes. For now. Thank you Ms. Lee, for you time. Jody said professionally and Emily nodded, turned around and started walking away.
Rachel eyes went back to Dean who was still looking down, still refusing to look at her. Before she could say anything Emily shouted from a distance.
Well, aren't you coming?! Breakfast will be served shortly.
Rachel looked at them and back at Emily. She hesitated a few seconds.
I have to go... I'm... I'm so sorry. She said softly before walking past them only to come back to Sam and handed him the letter. She gave him a pleading look before making her way to Mrs. Weldon.
They silently watched the two women get into the back of a black SUV and drive off. Sam turned to them before he tore the envelope and enfolded the letter. He quickly read it and to make sure read it a second time.
Well, I'll be damned. Sam said impressed.
What is it? Jody asked and Dean finally looked up at his brother.
She figured our case out.
Bobby's house.
Bobby was more than stunned by news of Rachel being in town, but they had to put the news on hold for now, knowing now they were most definitely facing a shtriga, after quickly researching it, they didn't have much time to find it before it would disappear for twenty years until it had to feed again.
They quickly put a plan together; Sam and Dean would go into one of the weakest child's room tonight and wait for it to feed, that's when the shtriga was most vulnerable, and pierce its heart with a iron blade.
While they were working on the plan, Jody and Bobby kept noticing how Dean barely took any interest in the matter. He kept staring at nothing and had to be pulled back into the conversation a few times. Sam also noticed it, but knew now wasn't the time to ask about it.
Ready? Asked Sam, holding a bag that had a few iron weapons in it, to his brother who was sitting on the couch. It took a few second before Dean nodded and got up.
You boys be safe. Jody said in concern.
Dean made his way out of the without a word but Sam took the time to tell Jody they'd be care and back before sunrise.
Once the brothers drove off Jody made her way to the couch and sat down heavily. She let herself think of the day she had and let out a long sigh. Bobby walked in with two glasses of whiskey, handing one to Jody and sitting beside her. Both sipped the liquor in silence for a long moment.
I can't believe she's really back. Bobby broke the silence, knowing Jody was thinking of the petite red head.
I can't believe she's been back all this time without us knowing...
Bobby sipped his drink in silence.
And Dean... I can't imagine what he's feeling right now... We all know how bad he took her death... Sam said he still had nightmares about it a few weeks ago. Jody said downing her drink.
Bobby got up and went into the kitchen only to come back with the whiskey bottle, filling their glasses again.
They'll figure it out. He simply said, rubbing her back.
Rachel had been in daze ever since she left the gang that morning. Carly called and Rachel rescheduled their lunch date. She had managed to convince Lucas she was probably coming down with something and excused herself for the evening. She sat on the edge of the bed and kept replaying what had happened. The look on Dean's face when he realised she was really her. How he couldn't even look at her when Castiel had told them she had been back for a year now. Silent tears ran down her cheeks. She felt so ashamed. Yet she was scared not knowing what Remph would do now. She had tried to help without them finding her and had greatly failed. She didn't know what to do. What she should do or what she wanted to do. She wiped her tears and made her way to her purse, pulled out her pack of cigarettes, lighter then walked onto the balcony of her room. She pulled out a cigarette and lit it, taking a deep puff before blowing it out. Pulling another puff she closed her eyes and left her nerves loosen a bit.
I think we should talk. A deep voice she knew said, making Rachel jump practically out of her skin.
She opened her eyes and sure enough Castiel was standing next to her on the balcony.
I screwed up. Remph said-
I know what Remph said. He told you to keep away. That Dean would be a better hunter for it. That he'd be distracted if you stayed. Castiel said without emotion.
I wanted... I needed him safe. The world needs him safe Castiel. Rachel said trying to make him understand why she chose to stay away.
I had Lucas back, he doesn't remember any of it. Was I just suppose to leave him? He didn't deserve that. I was trying to do the good thing for everyone. Remph said this was my place to be. I don't know the consequences of seeing all you will be now. What if Remph does something to me or Lucas or-
He won't. I will make sure of that. I apologize for telling them the way I did. I guess I was angry. The day you died... We all lost something. Castiel said.
I hate myself for hurting all of you. But I really believed it was for the best. I am, truly, sorry Cas. Rachel said sincerely.
Castiel surprised both of them when he wrapped his strong arms around the petite girl, hugging her tightly. Rachel hugged him back just as tightly. She had missed the angel more than she had let herself think. His hug was soothing, warm. She didn't know if it was an angel power but she didn't want to let go.
Suddenly Castiel stiffened. He pulled away and took a step back, looking into her room.
I have to go. He said. Before Rachel could say anything, he was already gone and Rachel felt instantly cold.
She heard the door of her room open and saw Lucas walk in looking for her. She threw her cigarette down the balcony and walked back into the room.
How are you feeling? He asked.
A little better. Rachel answered truthfully.
Father called, he said he had an announcement to make and asked us to pull the champagne out and wait for him in the living room. I thought you should be there, if you feel better enough.
Yeah, sure. I'll be right down. Rachel said walking back to her dresser to change.
I'll be downstairs, waiting. He said walking to her and kissing her quickly before leaving.
Rachel changed into black tights and an oversize blouse, attaching a belt to shape the loose piece of clothing. She brushed her hair, letting her locks loose and made her way to the living room.
She was greeted with a glass of champagne Lucas handed her. Emily stared out the window and announced Dr. Weldon's arrival. Soon enough Jim walked into the house, wearing the biggest smile Rachel had even seen. He took the glass Emily handed to him and lifted it in the air, they did the same.
Well, it is late, the suspense is nerve racking Jim, what are we celebrating? Emily asked.
To my career! I finally found the right treatment to treat the children! Announced Jim and took a big gulp of champagne.
They were all pleasantly surprised and cheered. Rachel lifted her glass to the Winchesters, knowing they were the ones who saved the children. But she played along and congratulated Dr. Weldon, kissing both of his cheeks.
That's wonderful, my love! I knew if there was a cure you would be the one to find it! Emily said before kissing her husband.
Yes, well unfortunately I wish I had found it sooner... But four of my patience woke up from their comas. All vital signs normal. Most of them already asked to go home, but we want to keep an eye on them, just to make sure. Explained Jim.
They drank their glass and chatted until Jim announced he had more work to do. People will want to know about this cure and excused himself and made his way to his office. Emily soon said her goodnights and walked upstairs, leaving Rachel and Lucas in the living room.
Wow... That's really great news. Said Lucas smiling to Rachel, wrapping an arm around her waist.
Yeah, it really is. Rachel said, wishing she could celebrate with the real responsible ones, she felt a tightness in her chest at the thought that she probably wasn't welcomed anyways.
We should get some sleep. Said Lucas pulling Rachel closer and both made their way to the room.
Bobby handed another beer to the brothers and Jody. They were celebrating the death of Shtriga.
I gotta say, this hunt was a draining one. Jody said relieved it was finally over.
Thanks to these two! Bobby said lifting his beer to the brothers before taking a swing.
To the Winchesters! Added Jody, who was a bit tipsy from the whiskey they had been drinking while they waited.
To Rachel. We'd still be at square one if it wasn't for her. Sam said, almost regretting it as an awkward silence quickly settled in the room. But they all finished by lifting their beer and nodding in agreement.
They chatted some more and eventually Jody left, saying she had an early shift the next day, well in a few hours. Bobby said his goodnight, telling them they should rest, this case took some time to solve and they had a few calls they had to look into soon before he made his way upstairs.
Both brothers sat on the couch, sipping their beer in silence. Sam looked at his brother to whom Dean rolled his eyes. he knew exactly what his brother wanted to talk about. But surprisingly Sam got up.
Bobby's right, we should call it a night.
Right. Dean answered, nodding.
Sam waited but quickly realised Dean wasn't getting up anytime soon.
Well, good night. Sam said and started walking to the staircase.
Sammy?
Yeah? Sam answered, stopping dead in his tracks, turning around to face his brother.
How are you... Dealing with, you know. Dean asked somehow unable to say her name.
Sam Brought his hand to the back of his neck and massaged it a few times before he made his way back to the couch. He thought about it a moment before he started to speak.
I guess I'm happy she's alive? Confused to why she didn't tell us? I mean she had to have a good reason, right?
She let us all mourn her, Sam... I mean, what did she think we would have done? Force her into this life? We would have been happy for her. I would have been happy for her. She didn't belong with us. We all knew that. Why did she put us through thinking we failed her?
I don't know, maybe tomorrow we can ask her?
No! Look, Sam, she didn't want us to know she was back. She clearly wants nothing to do with us. We should respect that and just be glad we don't have her death on our conscious anymore. She made her choice. Dean said and got up.
You can't tell me you ain't the least curious-
I'm really not. Dean answered before he headed upstairs.
Sam sighed in defeat. He knew his brother and right now Dean needed to tell himself he didn't care. Dean liked to put up a tough front but deep down his brother had a huge heart and it shattered to pieces that night Rachel had died.
The next day Rachel and Lucas met up with Carly for lunch at a small diner in town. They caught up some more. Lucas was telling Carly about his job in New-York and how it would be great if Carly would come check out the city and keep Rachel company while he went to his business trips.
If only Charlie's could survive without me I would! They actually called me yesterday to come in. Can you believe it? I have one week of vacay left I was thinking of keeping it for the spring, I might come then though.
That would be great, right honey? Lucas said
Both shared a worried look as Rachel was staring outside not paying attention to the conversation.
Honey?
Huh? Rachel asked snapping out of her thoughts
Are you feeling okay Ray? Asked Carly worried.
Hm, yeah. Sorry, I didn't get much sleep lastnight.
Well, I'll leave you two spend some girly time, mother wanted to go shopping for a new dress, she decided to throw another party, to celebrate father's breakthrough. I'll pick out something for you to wear? He asked and kissed the top of her head after he got up. Rachel half smiled and nodded. He left the table and went to the counter to pay their bill before he left the diner. Carly stared at Rachel a few minutes before Rachel cracked.
What!? She barked.
What's up with you? You barely spoke during lunch. You seem to be miles away in thought just before... Something happened yesterday?
Rachel wished she could tell her best friend about all that had happened yesterday but she couldn't. She would have to start from the beginning and how was she going to say anything without Carly thinking she was crazy. Before she could answer she was distracted by the little bell on the door ringing, announcing someone had came in. Her eyes widened when she recognized the two men.
Fuck. Rachel spat in panic.
Carly raised an eyebrow and turned around to see why Rachel seemed like she wanted to run away.
Fuck. Dean spat before he turned around to leave but bumped into Sam instead.
Table or booth? Asked a cheery waitress.
Dean rolled his eyes at Sam that didn't budge.
Counter. He spat and walked past the waitress. Sam smiled at the waitress taking the two menus she was holding and thanked her before joining Dean at the counter.
Damn! Now that's eye candy! Carly purred smiling at her friend, that didn't seem to share her excitement.
Oh, C'mon, just because you have Lucas doesn't mean you can't enjoy god's gift to women... Teased Carly.
Rachel couldn't look away from the two men who had now their back to her.
Ray?
Rachel snapped out of it and forced a smile.
Right. God's gift... We should go. Rachel said getting up and grabbing her leather jacket.
I agree. Carly said and puffed up her hair a little bit before grabbing her own coat and led the way to the front of the diner only she turned left instead of right, where the exit was.
Carly! What the hell are you-
Hiya! Carly greeted The brothers, who both turned towards her in surprised. Rachel kept a distance from the trio and rubbed her temple with one hand. Of all the men in the diner Carly had to try and pick up the Winchesters.
Uh, hi. Sam said not sure where this was going.
My name's Carly, this is my friend Ray Ray. She mentioned Carly with a swing of her head.
Are you guys from around here? Carly asked in a flirtatious way only Carly could pull.
No. Dean barked without looking up from his menu. Sam smiled apologetically to the blond.
We're from... you know here and there... Sam said politely.
That's hot. Carly said and winked.
Both Dean and Rachel rolled their eyes and let out a sigh. Carly turned to her friend and made big eyes at her, only to smile before returning her attention back to Sam. But before she could say anything else, Rachel grabbed her friend and pulled her out of the diner.
What the hell Ray!? Embarrassing much?! Carly said outside, pulling back her arm from Rachel.
You're unbelievable Carls. Rachel said shaking her head, making her way to the yellow beat up Beetle.
Excuse me Miss? Both girls turned to see Sam jogging towards Rachel. Carly's mouth opened in shock as she watch him pass right by her and stopped in front of Rachel by her car a few feet away.
Hey... Uhm... We gotta hit the road, but hm... here give me your phone. Sam said and reached his hand towards her. Rachel hesitated for a second before she handed her phone to him. Sam smiled and started tapping his fingers on it. She looked over to Carly who looked like she was witnessing the beheading of a puppy. The look of horror was almost comical.
After a moment he gave her phone back.
There you have all our numbers now. I texted myself so now I got yours too. I better get back... Sam hesitated looking from the diner to her and Carly. He squeezed her arm lightly and smiled at her before turning round and headed back to the diner.
Carly stood there a minute her mouth open. Rachel rolled her eyes and got into the car. Carly sprinted to the car and got in.
Okay... What the hell was that!?
As if I'm gonna call him Carls... Just easier to take his number than I say no than he tries to convince me and so forth... I didn't forget how to play the game just because I'm in a relationship.
You know, I read somewhere that people in relationship are more attractive to single people, something about self confidence or what not...
Yeah, that's probably it. Agreed Rachel and lightly laughed.
So... share his number? Asked Carly in a devilish way
Already erased babe. Rachel lied.
You're no fun Ray... Carly said disappointedly and Rachel giggled.
By the end of the afternoon, Carly had dropped Rachel off at the Weldon's home. She mostly stayed in her room as the Weldons were preparing for tomorrow's party. She tried to help but Emily said Johanna, who had offered to help, was enough help. She was lying in bed staring at her phone in her hands staring at the names she once considered her family in the short time they had been together. She thought of pressing on one of the names but reconsidered. What was she supposed to say? She almost pressed again before she threw her phone on the bed next to her and stared at the ceiling in frustration. After what seemed like an hour she grabbed her phone and jumped out of bed. She grabbed the keys on Lucas' dresser and headed downstairs. Rachel needed a drink.
I'm going for ride! She called out before leaving the house and jumping in the rented SUV.
Later that night...
Bobby, who couldn't sleep, was reading the papers, fishing out for anything supernatural while he waited for the boys to keep him up to date, seemed like they would be dealing with a ghost, this time. He took a sip of his beer and choked on it as the front door banged opened. Before he could react and get the gun that was taped under the table he saw Rachel walk tipsily in the kitchen.
I didn't know ok!? I really thought I was doing everyone a favor by staying away! I was told to stay away! I didn't want to Bobby! I missed you all. I tried to move on, I did! But I don't... I don't fit there! They would never understand... But you do... You all do... Who am I kidding, I don't even fit in your lives anymore either. I'm just a stupid useless human now. Maybe Remph should have just let me be... dead, you know? I'm just so tired of feeling like this. I'm... I'm tired Bobby.
And drunk? Bobby guessed once she was done ranting.
Totally... Rachel said before she sat down at the table, since everything started to turn.
Bobby got up and poured a tall glass of water and handed it to her. She took a few big gulps and made a face.
That's not vodka. She complained.
Drink up, I'll set up the room, you ain't driving in that state.
I'm sorry Bobby...
I know you are kid... and it ain't your fault. Cas told us about Remph this morning. We know you meant well and sweetheart, we're so happy you're alive and well.
Oh yeah I'm great! Rachel said sarcastically and Bobby chuckled.
Bobby went to go upstairs and set up clean sheet when Rachel started to talk again.
Dean won't look at me... I saw them again at lunch... I wish he'd yell at me or spit in my face for lying to you all but... He won't even look at me. She sobbed a bit.
He'll come around. Bobby reassured her before leaving her in the kitchen.
Rachel pulled her phone and pressed her finger down, dialing a number. She put the phone to her ear and patiently waited as it rung a few times before a rough voice answered.
Hello? She heard on the other end.
Why won't you look at me? She begged.
Ra-Rachel? Dean asked sitting up in bed, turning the light of his bed side on.
What's- What's wrong? He asked worried but no one spoke on the line.
Rachel?
You won't look at me Dean... I know I screw up. But you gotta understand... I'm really drunk right now. Maybe Sam shouldn't have given me your number... I should go. I-
Wait! Dean said loudly, to which Sam woke up in a start in the next bed. He waited but the line stayed silent.
Are you still there?
It's ok if you hate me Dean, I mean I don't really like myself very much either so...
I don't... I don't hate you, Rachel. Dean said softly and Sam sat up in bed.
Bed's all made, who you talking to? Dean heard Bobby ask.
Is that Bobby? Asked Dean confused and Sam lifted an eyebrow.
It's for you. I'm going to bed. Rachel said and handed the phone to bobby and wobbled her way upstairs.
Hello? Bobby asked.
It's Dean, why are you with Rachel?
She barged in a few minutes ago drunk off her ass. I'm worried about her son. I don't think she's in the best place right now. I set up her room, she'll be sleeping it off here.
Okay, good. Thanks Bobby. I'll call you tomorrow.
Sure, Night. Bobby said and hung up the phone.
Rachel's with Bobby? Asked Sam.
Yeah... He said she barged in, drunk. He's worried about her.
Well, it couldn't have been easy on her either Dean... One second she's angel juiced up and the next she back to a life she left.
She didn't leave it Sam it was taken from her.
She still chose us over it when Remph gave her the option. Sam replied.
It's called guilt, Sammy, Makes you do stupid things.
Like calling you drunk in the middle of the night? Sam suggested.
Dean groaned loudly and pushed his cover to the side, got out of bed and pulled his pants on from the chair next to his bed.
Where are you going?
I need some air. Dean answered pulling on his shirt and jacket before he left the motel room.
The next morning Rachel opened her eyes and instantly regretted it as a sharp pain pierced her brain. She placed her hands over her eyes and tried to remember last night's events. She slowly removed her hands and forced her eyes to focus. It took a second for her to recognise where she was. She was in her room, back at Bobby's. She let out a small moan, having no memories of going to Bobby's. She sat up and took a moment to look around. Everything was exactly how she remembered it. It was if she had never left. She got up and walked over to the dresser, she opened the first drawer and was stunned to see her underwear in it. She quickly opened the others and she found all her clothes Jody had bought her placed exactly like she had left it. She sat back on the bed, realizing they had kept her room intact, for over a year. She half smiled, half sobbed when she spotted the pen she worked so hard to make float on her nightstand. Memories flooded her mind until she was brought back to the present by a light tap on the door. Rachel quickly wiped the few tears off her check and cleared her throat.
Come in. She said hoarsely and cleared her throat again.
Bobby opened her door but stayed in the door frame. He took in the room as if he hadn't seen it in a while.
You kept everything? She asked before he could speak.
Didn't feel right to move any of it, really... Bobby said and shrugged as if it wasn't a big deal.
I got breakfast ready if you're hungry. Bobby said and chuckled when Rachel turned a slight shade greener.
Right... well, there's Aspirin, coffee and juice too?
Sold. Rachel smiled and followed him downstairs and into the kitchen.
She served herself out of habit, finding everything she needed easily. Bobby sat back down and sipped his coffee and took his paper, his usual morning routine.
Once the Aspirin swallowed and two glasses of orange juice she made herself a cup of coffee and sat at the other end of the table and couldn't help but smile at the view she had. She hadn't realised how much she missed being here.
So, do you remember last night or... Bobby trailed off.
I remember I went to a bar and... yeah that's it. Rachel said wincing in regret.
Well, assuming you came straight here, you barged in and yelled at me a bit-
Oh god...
It's okay, you were mostly sorry and miserable.
Seems about right.
Then I went to make the bed, no way I was letting you drive and when I came back you were on the phone with Dean.
Oh no... What did I say?
You'll have to ask him that.
I'm just making everything worst... I can't believe I called him. I can't believe I came here and bothered you.
Hey now, none of that. Rachel you listen and you listen good; My door will always be open for you and I will always be just one phone call away. Bobby said sternly yet she knew he was talking straight from the heart. She smiled tenderly and nodded her understanding.
She took a sip of coffee and Bobby's phone started to ring.
Yeah? Bobby answered the phone that was next to the paper. He was silent and gave Rachel a look.
Yeh, well... She's fine. She's here. Bobby reassured whoever was on the phone before hanging up.
You might want to check your phone... Bobby started and Rachel jumped out of her chair and frantically tapped her pockets not finding it.
On the counter by the sink. He mentioned and Rachel ran to it.
It was Jody, she received a call from that boyfriend of yours...
Shit! Rachel said as she opened her phone and saw 8 missed calls from Lucas and 12 from Carly.
Shit, shit, shit. Bobby, I gotta go.
Yeah, yeah just... Don't forget what I said. Bobby said getting up and Rachel surprised him with a tight hug.
Thank you Bobby, for everything. She said before running out of the house. She called Lucas while she got into her car and started the engine.
Rachel!? He answered
I'm fine Lucas, I am so sorry. I had a few drinks and ended up sleeping in the car and- Rachel checked her phone and sure enough Lucas had hung up on her.
Fuck! She yelled in the car, making her way to what she knew was going to be a fight.
Once she arrived at the house she quickly messaged Carly saying she was fine and wrote the same lie down. She got out of the car and was surprised that Lucas was waiting for her outside. This couldn't be a good sign.
Once she reached him he started walking to the back of the house, she decided to follow him. He brought her to the pool house and opened the door for her to get in. She looked at Lucas confused.
You really want to this inside the house with my mother there? He asked and she walked inside.
She jumped when he banged the door shut. He walked past her and started pacing in the living room she could tell his mind was racing, he didn't know where to begin. She decided to wait for him to start talking. After a few minutes of excruciating silence he stopped pacing and looked at her.
Are you cheating on me?
What? N-No! Babe I told you what happened.
And I should just believe that?
Yes! You should.
Come on Rachel, all the signs are there. Ever since we're back you've been...
What? I've been what Lucas?
Before Lucas could answer his phone rang and Lucas checked the caller ID.
It's work. I have to take this... We'll talk after the party tonight. He said walking away from the conversation and answered his call.
Can't wait... Rachel mumbled to herself.
Rachel made her way into the house and was glad she didn't bump into anybody on her way to the room. She went straight to the bathroom and adjusted the water temperature before stripping and stepping inside, washing the hangover smell off of her.
Once she was done she put on a pair of sweats, a tank top and pulled her wet hair into a messy bun. She picked up her laptop and settled on the bed surfing aimlessly the web. Not long after her phone started buzzing again.
Hey Carls, I'm sorry if Lucas worried you. Rachel said when she answered the phone, seeing Carly's number.
I'm just glad you're okay... I was gonna go for a coffee, want me to pick you up?
Whoever said no to coffee?
Great! I'll be there in ten. Carly said before hanging up the phone.
Carly came to pick up Rachel, who didn't bother changing but added a vest, and they made their way to the little coffee shop. They ordered their coffee and sat at a table near the window once they received their drinks.
So what really happened last night? Carly asked cutting to the chase.
I told you-
Ray, C'mon... Hot guy gives you his number and you just happened to not come home last night?
What?
Don't get me wrong I'm not judging here, though I didn't think you would have it in you to cheat...
I didn't cheat! Rachel said too loudly and both noticed the few people in the cafe staring at them.
Alright, alright... Carly said putting her hands up.
Did you and Lucas have a fight last night?
What? No.
Then why the hell did you go out, alone to drink and be too drunk to drive back? This isn't you babe. You call me or Lucas or even a cab... I don't get it. Lucas was so worried when I told him you weren't with me. We thought something bad happened. Talk to me, what happened?
I told you. God as if you never got drunk. I was bored last night. Emily didn't need my help since that bitch Johanna was helping with tonight's party. I was alone in my room all evening and I... I just needed to get out of there. I ended up at the bar, drank too much, end of story.
How are things with Lucas now? Carly asked, finally accepting her story.
Not good... He asked if I was having an affair, then went on to say all the signs were there, whatever that meant and then he got a call from work and told me we were gonna continue the conversation after the party... can't wait. Rachel explained bitterly.
Sorry babe...
Speaking of the party, you have to be there.
I don't know Ray, not really my scene.
Oh C'mon I'll be definitely put aside tonight... Plus, Lucas' rich, single friends should be there too... Rachel cooed the last part wiggling her eyebrows. Carly tried to look insulted but a smile grew.
Alright, I'll go...
Yay! You can come borrow any dress you'd like. Rachel said in triumph. Carly kept looking in the back of the cafe and her cup a few times before leaning over the table to Rachel.
Don't look now but there's this creepy hot dude that keeps looking at you over there.
Of course Rachel didn't listen and looked in the back of the coffee shop, sure enough her eyes met icy blue ones across from her, the man head bowed his eyes never leaving hers as his smile grew into the most creepy smile she had ever saw. A cold shiver ran down her spine and Rachel quickly turned back to her friend.
Wanna get out of here? Rachel suggested and Carly nodded picking up her purse and both women made their way to the door. Rachel took another look and sure enough the man was still smiling at her in a way that made her stomach turn.
Once in the car Rachel felt better.
That guy needs lessons on how to look cute. That was creepy right? Carly laughed as she pulled out.
Yeah... It was. Rachel replied without laughing.
That night Carly arrived at the Weldon's so the girls could get ready together before the party. She had dropped Rachel off before she headed to shower at her place first. When she got to Rachel's room she knocked and Lucas opened the door, wearing a nice fancy black tux.
Looking sharp Lulu! Carly said and Lucas laughed at the nickname.
Come in, Rachel is in the shower, she should be out soon. I have to go down now, see if father needs assistance with anything... I'll see you down there in a little bit?
Yeah, sure. Go. I'll see you later. Carly smiled and shut the door behind her once Lucas left.
She looked around the ravishing room and noticed a few dresses lay out on the bed. She walked to the bed and she noticed a long red silk dress she liked. She picked it up and walked to the long mirror near the French doors that gave to the balcony. She placed the dress in front of her body and looked at her reflection, satisfied.
I thought you'd pick that one. Rachel said once she got out of the bathroom and noticed her friend.
I love it!
Keep it, it clashes with my hair anyway... Rachel said walking to the bed and after a moment picked out a simple black cocktail dress.
And I love you. Carly said before she went into the bathroom to change into it.
Rachel giggled and changed into her dress also. She quickly checked herself in the mirror, approved and went to the closet and picked out a pair of red stilettos to complete her outfit.
Looking hot Ray! Carly said, wearing the red dress that accentuated her curves.
Wow, that dressed looked nothing like that on me. Rachel said.
Both girls applied their make-up and fixed their hair, Carly went for dark make-up and pulled her blond locks up. Rachel went for a more natural look and decided to curl her hair in loose soft locks.
So, did you and Lucas talk? Carly asked curious.
Hm, no... He just came and got ready here and told me to be down by 8.
Its 8:30...
I know. Rachel smiled at Carly.
Ready? She asked Carly and the later took another look in the mirror before she nodded.
The night started nicely, Rachel and Carly had a few good laughed to the point of Emily sending them daggers with her eyes. Champagne flowed and Carly eventually started to flirt with a couple of men. She was now sitting at a table outside having a drink with one of Lucas' friend, leaving Rachel to make small talk with a few of the guests. She smiled and nodded as everyone praised Jim for his cure. Rachel found it funny no one realised no other kid was sick since. That she was the one who found who was behind it and the Winchesters were the ones to be thankful to. But a little part of her envied them for not knowing about what went bump into the night, to have a simpler view of things.
Rachel walked around the yard for a bit, watching the rich kiss each other ass or competing to whom had the bigger boat or house. She made her way to the pool house, looking for a bit of tranquility. Once she was inside she flopped herself on the soft couch and took a deep breath. She pulled her phone out to check if she had missed a call or text and was surprised she had an unread message. It was from Sam.
Hey, just thought I'd check
In. How's the hangover? ;P
Rachel smiled at her phone and started typing.
It was a bitch this morning
But better now. Plz tell
Dean I am sorry, I don't even
Remember calling him...
She pressed send and placed her phone back into her bra. She got up to leave, but stopped when she heard a noise in the back room. She turned towards the noise and saw a shadow pass the doorway of the room. She started walking slowly to the room, picking up a candle holder from the desk, to be safe. She thought of a robber, of a monster but when she entered the room, it was much worst. She froze at the sight and dropped the candle holder. The noise startled the two figures, who pushed each other off.
Rachel! Lucas yelped in surprise, pulling his pants back up and wiping the lipstick from his own lips.
She watched in horror as Johanna quickly pulled her dress down.
Screw you. Rachel said with venom before she stormed out, tears running down her face.
She stormed through the people and found Carly laughing with Lucas' friend, until she saw Rachel's expression.
Oh my god, honey, what's wrong? Carly asked getting up from her chair.
We have to go, I want to go, now. Rachel said in a daze, tears pouring down.
OK, ok, C'mon. Carly said and wrapped an arm around her friend and made their way out of the house, completely forgetting about the guy she was sitting with.
Once they made it to the car and Carly helped Rachel in, running to her side and entered she asked.
What happened!?
Rachel only broke down sobbing unable to speak. Carly started the engine and drove off.
