Chapter 4
A week past and Rachel hadn't regained conscious yet. The doctor's were only starting to ease up on the pain medication a day go. Fortunately, they didn't need to operate her brain and the swelling was gone on day three. They all took turns looking over her, with the exception of Dean who barely left the hospital to shower and change. Carly would show up as soon as she would wake up and leave only to work and sleep. Most of the time Sam would show up at Charlie's, have a few drinks to make sure she stayed safe and they got to know each other a bit better. Jody would swing by a couple of times a day making sure Dean would eat and, when she could, cover for him while he went to Bobby's a few hours at a time. Bobby kept an eye open on any demon activity and told fellow hunters to check in if they noticed any unusual demon gatherings and whatnot. Sam would usually end his nights sitting by her side with his brother and both would sleep in the awful chairs.
Lucas called Carly from London, where he was needed for his work, not happy about the two men, he heard from his father, that were always there. Carly said someone should be there in case Rachel would wake up and he was too busy to be bothered to come anyways, so he should be thankful she wasn't alone. He tried finding out who was Dean but Carly told him that was a discussion he should have with Rachel.
It was Sunday, Carly's day off, and she made a stop at the flower place before heading to the hospital. Once she walked in private room, she was now out of ICU after day four, she was not surprise to see Dean sitting by her side, watching her sleep.
Hey, how's sleeping beauty today? Carly asked while stepping in the room and replacing her old flowers for the ones she had bought.
They took her ventilator out last night.
Oh yeah... well would you look at that. She looks better without that tube, huh? Carly said inspecting her friend.
Dean frowned, thinking she would look better awake.
Bruises are fading every day, Sam was right. Sorry I couldn't make it yesterday, had a double shift and all...
That's alright, didn't miss much... They stopped giving her the pain meds completely this morning, a way to get her to wake up, I guess. Dean said getting up from the chair and stretched out.
When's the last time you slept in a bed? Or, just, slept? Or even washed yourself? Carly asked making a face.
Hey! There's a shower in the bathroom, I washed... Yeah okay I should take a shower... Dean said grabbing his duffle bag and walking into the bathroom of the room and shut the door, making Carly giggle.
Carly took her coat off and took Dean's seat.
I'm telling you Ray, you got yourself a fan club there... a smelly one, but hey... Carly said to Rachel.
Jokes aside, he's worried about you babe, we all are. Carly said and held her limp hand.
A few minutes later, Dean came out, his hair damp. Carly looked up to Dean and back at Rachel.
He's here now, we should stop talking about him. Carly joked and Dean rolled his eyes.
Don't you ever get sick of hearing yourself talk? Dean asked putting his bag back under Rachel's bed. When Carly's witty didn't come Dean looked at her. She was staring intensely down on Rachel.
What? Dean asked and Carly jumped out of chair.
Say something else.
You're freaking me out, what's-
Ray? I think she's waking up, every time you speak she twitches. Carly explained and Dean quickly made his way next to Carly.
Rachel? He asked and saw the hand Carly was holding flex. He quickly bent over Rachel and took a piece of hair out of the way.
Come on sweetheart, wake up, open your eyes... You can do it. Dean begged gently.
To both their surprise Rachel's eyes started to move under her lids.
That's it Rach, you can do it. C'mon...
And just like that, Rachel's eyes fluttered open.
Hey there, beautiful. Dean said softly with a huge smile on his face.
Rachel's eyes widened and she tried to talk and sit up but the movement almost made her pass out again.
Easy, easy... It's alright, everything's okay. Dean tried to calm her, seeing her eyes panic.
Car... Carls... she tried to say in a raspy voice.
I'm right here Babe! Carly said tearing up, but also wearing a huge smile on her face.
Rachel's expression changed into a confused one, looking from Dean to Carly.
Oh yeah, we're besties now! Dean won't admit it but he totally has a crush on me.
Just... Go get a nurse, will yah!? Dean said annoyed and Carly left the room.
See what I had to put up with? Dean joked and Rachel almost giggled but the pain took over and she let out a moan.
Easy now, easy... That son of bitch really did a number on you... The doctor's decided to take you off the pain meds, to help wake you up, but I'm pretty sure they're coming with something for it now.
How... how... l...long...
How long were you out? Dean guessed and Rachel barely nodded, the more she woke, the more she felt the pain all over her body.
About a week... Dean told her and her eyes widened.
Before they could continue, three nurses and a doctor rushed in the room, followed by Carly. Dean was pushed aside by a nurse while the doctor flashed his little light in Rachel's eyes, making her moan again.
Hi, I'm doctor Stevens. Can you tell me your name? He asked while he continued his exam on her, checking her reflexes.
Ra...chel.
Good, do you remember what happened? He continued and Rachel half nodded.
Squeeze my hand... He told her and Rachel squeezed.
Good. Are you experiencing any pain?
Like a bitch... Rachel groaned.
Alright, we can help with that. The doctor smiled and turned his attention to Carly and Dean.
Reflexes are good, memory too and motor skills seems great. I'll ask for the two of you to wait outside so we can continue examining her, then we'll give her something for the pain, that will help her rest comfortably.
Thank you doctor. Carly said and took a few steps towards the door before noticing Dean didn't budge. She rolled her eyes and walked back to him pulling his arm.
C'mon big boy, she'll be fine. We have calls to make anyways... Carly said and Dean let her pull him to the door.
We'll be right back Rach. Dean said looking back to Rachel and saw her nod.
The nurse that was checking the multiple IV bags smiled and once Rachel's friends were gone she bent down over her patient.
He cares a lot about you, that one. I didn't see him leave your bedside once since you came in. I'm surprised your friend managed to pull him away.
After a painful change of bandages and an even more painful re-wrapping of her ribs, they lifted the top of her bed, putting her into a more comfortable, sitting position and, to Rachel's relief; they finally gave her something for the pain. Then they all left the room and Rachel tried fighting the sleep, wanting to know what Carly knew now that she had spent a week with Dean, but her eyes closed and Rachel couldn't fight it anymore and fell into a deep sleep.
A few hours later, Rachel's eyes fluttered open. She looked around her room and saw the whole gang in her room chatting away. She saw Sam and Carly having a conversation at the foot of her bed, Bobby and Jody were near the door also deep in their conversation. She looked down at her warm and saw a big rough one holding hers. Her eyes followed the arm up to Dean who was sleeping on the chair, holding his head with his other arm resting on the arm chair. She lightly squeezed his hand and Dean eyes opened, looking at Rachel, before sitting up straight.
Hey, welcome back. Dean smiled but let go of her hand.
All of them made their way around her bed. Dean got up and Carly quickly took his place.
Hey babe, how are you feeling? She asked her friend and took her now cold hand into hers.
I feel great... Rachel slurred, still under the effects of the pain medication and they all chuckled.
I bet you do, but that won't last so enjoy the buzz. Carly said.
Rachel's eyes scanned the room and she smiled when her eyes settled on Sam.
Hey Sammy... did you get taller?
Hm no, I think you're just... lower.
Right... Hey does Carly know about demons? Oh shoot... Rachel said realizing Carly was right there.
Carly, sweetie, can you give us a minute?
It's okay Rach, I told her about it. Sam reassured her, smiling.
Scary shit, right? Rachel said to Carly closing her eyes as the room slowly started to spin.
The thought of loosing you was scarier. Carly said, squeezing her hand to which Rachel smiled.
Glad you're awake, I wish I could stay but... Bobby said and Rachel opened her eyes.
Evil don't take holidays?
Something like that yeah. I'll see you around, kid. Bobby said and patted her feet before he left.
Jody?
Yeah?
What are you waiting to tap that? I mean he is hot, if you're into the rugged red neck type.
Oookay, they definitely over did it with the drugs. I'm gonna... go get us some food or something. Jody said beet red and left the room fast.
Yeh, we should let you rest for a bit... Sam said, a bit nervous of what Rachel could say in her state.
I'll see you in bit, babe. Carly said before getting up and walking to Sam.
Ok... Dean, can you stay for a minute?
I'm not going anywhere. Dean reassured her as the two left the room and he sat back down on his chair.
They both stayed in a comfortable silence for a while.
Dean?
Hm?
Are we... good? Rachel asked softly, nervous about his answer.
Dean remembered all the times he would ask Rachel the same question after they would argue or fight and grabbed her hand again.
We're good. He answered and gave her hand a gentle squeeze.
Good... I missed you, every day, I missed you. She said her eyes closing.
Dean took his other hand and gently stroked her hair.
Yeah... me too. He said in almost a whisper and Rachel smiled as she fell into another deep sleep.
The next day the nurses came and helped Rachel get out of bed and made her walk to the chair a few feet from her bed and helped her sit in it. Rachel complained but once they told her the more she progressed the faster she would leave, she accepted.
Son of a bitch... Rachel said holding her side.
It'll get a little better each time. The nurse tried to encourage her but the look Rachel was giving the nurse made her leave the room.
Moody much? Teased Carly.
Bite me.
Yeah, why don't you come over here and say it to my face. Carly said and both chuckled.
Ow...
That's right, know your place.
You two always like that? Sam asked lifting an eyebrow and both girls nodded.
Hey! You moved. Dean said coming in the room with a four coffee cups, handing out a cup to everyone.
Captain obvious, ladies and gentlemen. Carly teased taking the coffee from Dean, making Rachel laugh.
Ow! God stop with the jokes... you're gonna kill me.
You'll just come back again.
What exactly did they tell you? Rachel asked a bit surprised but Carly didn't answer as Dr. Weldon walked in the room, eyeing the two men before turning his attention to Rachel.
It is good to see you up and awake, Lucas was thrilled by the news.
That sentence was enough to freeze Rachel on the spot, remembering the last 24 hours before she got attacked.
He was surprised you didn't call him too. I imagine with all this company you just hadn't found the time yet. He said eying the brothers again.
Well, I just stopped by to give you these. Jim said and handed a few papers to Rachel.
What are those? Asked Rachel, finding her voice.
Transfer papers, so you can get back home to New-York. Just fill them out and a nurse will come pick them up later... and Rachel? You should call Lucas. The doctor said and walked out of the room.
No one spoke and all watched Rachel's reaction, who was just staring down at the papers in her hand.
Can you all give me a minute? Rachel asked after a long moment and all three got up.
Carls, gimme your phone.
You're not seriously going to call that jerk are you?
Carls, please... Rachel said seriously and Carly rolled her eyes but handed her phone before stepping out, followed by the brothers.
I can't believe this, he didn't even bother calling off work for her, but as soon as she's told to call him, she can't do it fast enough and what she's just gonna run back to New-York now? Forget he cheated on her? Forget the ones that actually cared enough to be there for her!? Carly said fuming.
We don't know that Carly... Sam said and Dean didn't say a word while they went down to the waiting room.
Rachel sat looking at the number she dialed and waited a while before pressing the call button, placing the phone to her ear.
Hello? She heard Lucas answer after a few rings.
Hey, it's me.
Rachel! Thank god you're okay, I was so worried. How are you feeling?
I'm... not coming back to New-York.
What!? Rachel, listen, what happened with Johanna, it was a mistake. I was sad and confused and-
It's not just because of that. We... we don't belong together, we both knew this in the start and it made it... special, but it's over. We don't live in the same world. You should be happy and I know I haven't made you happy in a long time.
That's not true bab-
I'm... I haven't been happy in a long time too. We tried, you know we did... But it's over Lucas.
This is about that Dean guy isn't it!? Lucas asked anger apparent in his voice.
No, it's not. I don't fit in your life and you honestly don't fit in mine anymore. Sioux Falls is my home. I'm sorry Lucas, but it's for the best and you'll see in time I'm right.
You'll never find someone who's willing to give you the world like I am.
Luckily, I don't need that... Good bye Lucas. Rachel finished and hung up the phone.
She took a shaky breath and closed her eyes, before dialing another number.
An hour passed and Carly was pacing back in forth for at least the last 45 minutes.
It's been an hour! Can we go now? She asked impatiently.
Yeah, I guess she should be done with her call. Sam said looking at his watch.
When they got to her room their hearts sunk. Rachel was fully dressed, sitting in a wheel chair, and packed while a nurse was helping her put her coat on, wearing a disapproving frown.
What the hell is all this!? Carly barked.
I'm getting out of here.
Wow... they should really scan your brain again. Are you nuts!? Don't you have a shred of self respect?! And what about me!? Or the people who lost you a year ago, you're just gonna walk out on us!?
Then we're going with you. Sam said.
What? Rachel and Carly asked in union.
Where Rachel goes... we go. Right? Sam asked his brother.
Right. Dean said but he wasn't looking forward to it. Seeing that prick of a boyfriend again was the last thing he wanted.
Guys- Rachel started but Carly cut in.
Fine! I'm going too! There must be a ton of bars I could work for in New-York.
You guys are sweet, but I'm not going to New-York. I just signed myself out.
Against doctor's orders. Chimed in the nurse.
Yeah, against doctor's orders. I called Bobby he said I could crash for as long as I wanted. All I need is a ride. Rachel explained and smiled as she saw the three of them sigh in relief.
...and Lucas? Asked Carly.
We're done. Rachel said looking at her hands.
You sure leaving the hospital is a good idea? Asked Dean, changing the Lucas subject.
I really don't want to stay where my ex's father works a minute longer. Anyways, all I'll have to do is rest and walk and sit until I heal. I can do that at Bobby's. I won't miss any check-ups and I'll listen to what they tell me to do aand, I know you guys know how to change bandages, better than half the nurses here. Rachel explained and the nursed huffed.
Not you, you were gentle. Rachel smiled at the nurse.
Alright then... Let's get you Bobby's. Dean said and walked behind her to push the wheel chair.
