HEY GUYS!
So I'm back with a new chapter to Star Ray. I would have uploaded sooner but I'm still in the middle of cleaning up previous chapters. Also, I'm updating other stories as well. In any case, thank you for sticking with the story for so long. Just to let you know the next chapter will be kind of short and will be filled with different POV's. Like always I do not own Marvel only my Oc's.
Calliope POV
"Father, this is Lady Calliope Rodriguez. She is one of my companions from Earth, an Avenger," Thor introduced me to the older man. After our conversation, we made our way to the throne room, where the King and Queen were waiting for us. Looking at the leaders of Asgard I can't help but feel somewhat disappointed. The Queen looks beautiful and amazing but the King… I can't help but think of a pirate instead. He's nothing like Luffy from One Piece or Captain Jack Sparrow, though. I should probably stop comparing him to fictional characters and focus on the conversation before I get in trouble.
"Ah, so this is the young lady you spoke fondly of," the Queen smiled lovingly at her son. What surprised me is the fact that Thor spoke about us. He even said nice things about me, and I was so rude to him when we first met. "It is an honor to meet you, Lady Rodriguez."
"Likewise, your majesty," I said, bowing to her at the end. I probably look like a fool to this woman, but I can't help that I'm socially awkward. I mean, seriously, how are you supposed to act when speaking to alien royalty. I suck at this fancy stuff.
"Why is she here?" Odin asked his son, but his eye never strayed from me. On second thought, he reminds me of Fury. I mean if Fury was an old white guy who happens to be King.
"Heimdall found her drifting in space unconscious and far from Midgard. He brought her here so we could assist her-"
"She seems fine to me. Send this girl back to her world, where her people can help her. She has no business here among us."
"Father, she has been lost for quite some time. She needs nourishment and rest."
"She can receive it on Midgard, where she belongs."
"Nonsense," The Queen remarked. "She can do so here in the palace."
"Frigga-"
"No, I will not allow you to send this poor child home without checking her health. She assisted Thor during the battle in Midgard, did she not? What will that say about us if we turn her away now when she is in need?"
Odin looks conflicted as he hears his Queen speak. It's clear he wants me to leave, but with both Thor and his wife opposing him, I doubt it leaves him with many choices. Not unless he wants to deal with a couple of headaches later, that is.
"Very well, she may stay for two days before returning to Midgard. I do not want her here for long," he announces as he allows Thor and I to leave the throne room. As soon as we left, I felt a weight lifted up from my shoulders. I don't like the way Odin was looking at me. It's as if he was searching my very soul for something.
"Ugh, I hate dealing with royalty," I groaned to Thor as we walk. "I'm not a fancy person. I don't know how I should speak to people who are born to rule."
"Well, you did better with my father than with me. I must congratulate you on such a feat," Thor jokes. I, however, couldn't help but feel embarrassed about my past behavior. I really am such a toxic person.
"Yes, but it's people like her that help me relax as a mother," a voice spoke up from behind us. "She will make certain you do not allow your power to consume you. I rather you stay humble than arrogant."
I whip around to face the queen of Asgard. For a second, I thought she would be angry with me, but instead, she wears a gentle smile on her face. She seems almost angelic compared to the people she is surrounded by.
"Ah, mother, I did not expect your company."
"I wanted to meet the child whose strength you mentioned rivaled many of our fiercest warriors."
Stunned by what the queen just said, I looked to Thor. The man only smiles down at me with a look of pride as he nudges me forward. Understanding what this meant I returned my attention to the queen once more.
"Hi..."
"Hello again Lady Rodriguez," the queen smiles at me. "I'm sure you're famished. Why don't you join my son and I for dinner?"
"Thank you, your majesty," I said, bowing my head to the queen.
Not too long after that, we found ourselves in a large room filled to the brim with elegant golden decor and a single table that held enough food for an entire Army to feast upon. The food itself looks delicious; I can already feel my mouth watering at the thought of eating it. Still, a thought struck me.
"Is someone else joining us for dinner?" I ask the two royals.
"No, my dear," Queen Frigga replied easily as she filled her plate. "I simply wished for you to have your fill of food. Also, my son is quite a glutton. Although, not as much as his friend."
"Mother, I do not believe anyone can rival the hunger of Volstagg," Thor laughed as he began to serve himself. The two laughed at his comment, but when they noticed my silence, they stopped. "Forgive me, my friend. Allow me to explain who Volstagg is as well as the rest of the warrior three and Lady Sif. The Warrior Three and Lady Sif are my dear friends. I have known them for many years as we have trained and fought together. They are among the strongest warriors here on Asgard, and I pray that before you leave, I have the chance to introduce all of you."
"Well... I guess if they're your friends..."
"No, it does not matter if they are my friends. I will only allow them to meet you if you are willing," Thor gently assures. Looking at me, he begins to frown. "Calliope, are you not hungry? You have not served yourself."
Looking down at my plate, I realized I haven't placed any food on it. Suddenly hit with the desire to eat, I start grabbing food. I wonder how long I was drifting in space to feel this level of hunger.
"Sorry, I just don't usually eat with others these days. I kind of got distracted by the conversation."
"There is no need to apologize. I simply wish for you to enjoy yourself. Once you are finished, I hope you will allow the physician to check your health."
"Yes, that sounds fine with me."
As we ate, it was the mother and son who mostly spoke. They laughed, they joked, and from time to time, they asked me questions. The questions were not invasive in any way. They mostly asked me about Earth culture seeing as it is so vast compared to their own. I answered their questions to the best of my abilities, but thankfully I have practice in this department. Steve, whenever we're together, frequently inquires what has happened in the past 70 years. Before him, my sister would often ask me questions. She was naturally a curious person, so I had to get used to answering questions at a drop of a hat.
"So, Lady Rodriguez, tell me how did you come to acquire such tremendous power," Queen Frigga asked me once we were finished eating. Automatically, I freeze to my seat, and a look of dread covers my face. She must have noticed since she is quick to put a hand on my shoulder. " I am sorry, my child. I did not mean to bring you to a dark place."
"No," I said thickly, my accent becoming more evident than before. "It's alright, you didn't know."
Silence filled the once joyful room, and I can't help but be angry at myself for it. I feel as I keep ruining everything I come across.
"Mother if you would excuse us, I believe now is the perfect time to have Calliope visit the infirmary," Thor announces as he rises from the table. The Queen rises from her seat, and I follow suit soon after.
"Yes, I have other duties to attend to as it is. Lady Rodriguez, will you join us in the great hall tomorrow morning for breakfast?"
"Yes, of course, your highness."
"Are you sure my friend? There will be a great number of people there."
"Don't worry, Thor, I'll be fine," I smile up at the man to reassure him.
"Very well, I will see both of you then."
Frigga's POV
As I made my way to a private room that only a few are allowed to enter, I can't help but allow my mind to wander. The child Thor has brought to the palace is strange to me. I can feel the hidden power that lies just beneath her skin. Her strength, as Thor describes it, rivals many of our fiercest warriors. I believe my son does not understand the precise complexities of this child's nature. However, he is young, and he has never had an affinity for magic. Due to this, he can not see the girl as I do.
I see the girl, not as a mortal, but as a living Star. One that is sadly dying. Not physically, but emotionally. Her heart is closed to the world. Fear and anger rule there with such authority, it is impossible for anything to survive for long. I pray that one day she may find salvation, or I fear she will never rise again. I must leave this situation in Thor's hands, seeing as mine are full.
Entering my private chambers, I check to see if anyone is nearby. Once I am certain no one is here, I cast a spell to see my son, Loki.
Within seconds he appears before me as proud as ever even in imprisonment. I detect a hint of mischief from him, and the light in his eyes informs me he's well aware of what is happening here in the palace. I'm sure he's heard of the events that transpired from the guards. They seem to gossip more than any group of old women can.
"Mother, it's late. I'm surprised you came to grace me with your presence, considering you have a guest at the palace. A child from Midgard no less."
"Your brother will keep his friend entertained," I reply, to my son. From what it sounds like, he doesn't know who is here, and he's hoping I'll tell him. "You needn't worry about them, Loki. Why don't you tell me about the books I brought you. Did you like them?"
"Of course, I did," he breathes out. It seems he's changing tactics because I highly doubt he's dropped the subject. "The first one caught my interest the most. I'm surprised I haven't come across it before during my time in the Library."
"That's because it's a part of my personal collection that I have not touched in centuries. I thought you would enjoy reading about the old mystic arts of the witches I grew up with."
"Hmmm, perhaps you should send more like this then."
"I'll keep that in mind the next time I send you some books."
"Will you be able to? Considering the state of Asgard at the moment, I would think not. The amount of chaos and disorder between the realms is at an all-time high with no end in sight."
"Well, luckily, I have not been out on the battlefield for centuries, so I believe I can manage to send you some necessities in the meantime."
"True, but the court has been uneasy to the point Thor has to make more appearances than usual," my son pointed out to me. Although this is true, I am a bit unnerved by the sheer amount of information Loki possesses. Not because he knows of such things, but due to the fact that he is separated from everyone, and yet he is still one step ahead of everyone. That's my boy.
"Observant as always, my son. Nevertheless, Thor is handling it as best as he can. He still lacks in the area of court dealings, but he is getting better at it."
"I'm sure he rather spend his time out in the field battling whatever crosses his path."
"Well, I wouldn't say that, but he does wish to return to the field," I explain to him. Loki gives me a look of uncertainty, which looks quite humorous on him. "Your brother wants to end the chaos as soon as possible. He feels responsible for it since he was the one who destroyed the Bifrost in the first place."
"Why does he not ask his new friend to help?"
"No," I snap at him unintentionally. Shocked by my sudden change in both voice and demeanor, my son raises an eyebrow. I take a moment to collect myself before I speak once more. "Forgive me, I did not mean to raise my voice. I simply wish for her to have a pleasant stay here until she returns to Midgard."
The last thing I want is to put that child through any more pain. I haven't seen her memories as I do not wish to intrude on her privacy, but her emotions are loud. While she is under my care, I will not allow any harm to come to her. This, I swear.
"Her?" Loki's voice rings out. It was at that moment I realized my earlier blunder.
"I believe this conversation is over-"
"Far from it, mother. So, it's a female that Thor is familiar with that resides in Midgard. The list of women is somewhat short, surprisingly... They said she was found in space unconscious, which means it has to be the child, Calliope Rodriguez."
"You had your suspicions, did you not?"
"Of course, Midgard is no longer the primitive planet it once was. It now possesses the power and means to challenge others. There are plenty of mortals who can survive in the abyss of space, but not too many either."
"I did not know you thought so highly of humans."
"I don't... well, not all of them, but there are a few that have begrudgingly earned my respect. Calliope is one of the few. The child is powerful, and she is on the brink of evolution."
"Evolution? Loki, you might be confused. Calliope is a child of 17 years. The girl I met is broken, sad, and angry. She is a dying star that must be protected before she is extinguished."
"Hmph, Mother, you obviously underestimate her. I have heard part of her history from a man who once knew her. If her past wasn't enough to kill her, then I doubt anything will."
"Have you ever spoken to her?"
"No."
"Then you know not of what you speak of. I spoke to her and felt the turmoil in her heart."
"And yet she still lives," He counters with a knowing smile.
"Barely being alive is not the same as living."
"Survival is the first step. Living comes to those who continue to fight. You see her as a dying star, but I see her differently. The moment I met her, I knew what she was. Calliope is a Nebula on the brink of collapsing. Once she does, a star will form that will have the capability of rendering the Heavens helpless before her might."
"You haven't seen into her mind yet, have you?" I inquired as I was drawn into my son's tale. The way he spoke of her with such certainty makes me wonder about the possibilities this girl might possess.
"No, I haven't," he is quick to reply. "If I had the chance, I would. That hardly matters, but I stand by my views. Mark my words, mother. The day will come when you realize I am right. I suspect The All-Father already knows this. If you don't believe me, then use your foresight. Look at her future and confirm it yourself."
Calliope's POV
The next day I woke up in a luxurious room so beautiful I never wanted to leave. The bed alone is to die for I almost cry. I've never had such a comfortable bed before. Even when I woke up in the middle of the night from my nightmare, I was able to go back to sleep almost immediately. Plus, I have a balcony that looks out into the city. That's so cool.
Getting up from bed, I walk into the bathroom to wash up and get dressed. The night before, Thor made sure I had everything I needed. That includes having spare clothes. Sadly, I have to wear a dress, but beggars can't be choosers. The cool part is it has armor.
The dress itself is dark blue with a slight ombre effect with the bottom of the dress ink black. The sleeves come down to my wrist, and the entire dress is softer than silk. The armor, however, consists of a breastplate, shoulder guards, and cuffs. All three items have small intricate designs on them on a silver background. The shoes are simple grey flats, but I swear they feel like I'm walking on clouds. The maids offered to braid my hair and assist me with getting dressed, but I declined. Instead, I asked for instructions so I would be able to do this myself.
I put my hair in a half-up hairstyle, so it looks nice. Yesterday, I had an excuse for looking terrible, but today I don't. I refuse to look bad in front of the royals. Especially Odin, since he continues to look down at me for no reason whatsoever. I don't know what his problem is, and quite frankly, I don't care.
Once I deem myself presentable, I sit down on my bed and wait for Thor. He said he would escort me to the dining hall so I won't get lost. Thinking about the man puts a smile on my face. Last night he spent every moment beside me. First, we went to the med-bay where I got checked out. Once the physicians deemed me healthy, they sent us away. Well, we would have left if Thor hadn't ordered them to continue. He also told them if they found anything, it had to be kept a secret. Through the next round of exams, nothing could be found, and as the hour drew late, Thor decided to call it a night for my sake, informing them we would be back tomorrow. Next, he made sure I was settled and knew as much about the palace as I needed. Thor assigned servants to me but no guards because, in his words, he said that placing guards would be unnecessary since Asgard is the safest place in all of the nine realms. If by chance, something happens, Thor claims I can take care of myself, and the guards at that point would be getting in my way.
When Thor finally came to collect me for breakfast, it's the first time I see him without his armor. I'm not sure I'll ever get used to the sight, but it's not a bad look for him either. His hair is longer than before, so he has to wear it half up in a braid. All in all, he looks well since the battle of New York. I wonder how I must look in comparison?
By the time we arrive at the dining hall, most of the other Asgardians have entered. Thor leads me to the front of the lead table to sit beside him. His mother and father have yet to arrive, but that doesn't stop the Asgardians from eating. I begin to fill my plate as Thor tries his best to introduce me to the cuisine of his homeworld.
"Thor, who is this?" A woman who sat down across from me asked the prince. She has long black hair, silver armor, simple leather pants. She's quite beautiful but behind her beauty, I sense a fierce warrior. Three other men come to sit beside us, and for once, I feel small in the presence of those around me.
"Ah, my friends, this is Lady Calliope Rodriguez. She is a friend from Earth, a part of the team called the Avengers. She is the one who is named Star Ray, due to her incredible powers! Calliope, these are my comrades Lady Sif and the Warriors Three."
"So, this is one of the mortals you speak so highly of," a man with blond hair and a goatee said. "She is a bit young; is she not."
"So were we," a man with Asian features points out.
"True, but we are still in wonderful shape!" exclaimed a large red-haired man.
"Ha! I pray you do not speak of yourself, Volstagg. I have never seen you so large!"
"I beg your pardon, Fandral? Me, large? I AM IN THE BEST SHAPE OF MY LIFE!" The man yells as he hits his ginormous belly. The entire group laughs in response, and even I can't help but smile.
"So, why are you here?" The raven-haired woman asked me once everyone stopped laughing.
"I-um- left Earth, and I was drifting in space when Heimdall found me. He was kind enough to bring me here and tell Thor about my situation."
"Why were you outside of your realm?" the man with black hair asked next.
"Well, it's not like I'm confined to stay on Earth. I can journey outside of my planet when I please... just didn't work out that well."
"This is why Mortals should never leave their realm," a voice boomed in the distance. Entering the dining room is King Odin and Queen Frigga. The King's eye ever watchful of me.
All the Asgardians rise when they enter, and I join them out of respect for the family, not Odin, and his rude attitude. Everyone sits again with Odin at the head of the table and Frigga at his right hand. I notice Thor tense up slightly now that his father is beside him. It's either that or he's expecting me to snap back at the older man, but I hold my tongue instead. Thor has been so kind to me that I would hate to return his kindness with my disrespect.
"Tell me, child, why did you leave your planet," Odin asked me once everyone is settled. I sense something in his voice, but I can't detect what it is.
"I went to... umm," I find myself speechless in front of the multitude of royalty and warriors. I never prepared a story to tell the others, and Thor warned me not to tell anyone behind the reason I left Earth.
"We are waiting, girl."
"...Calliope," I muttered angrily.
"What?"
"Does it really matter why I left?" I inquire to the King, trying my best to be polite. "I didn't feel like staying on Earth."
"Where were you planning on going?"
"I didn't have a destination in mind…"
"So you simply left your realm for no reason with no clear plan to a location you did not have in mind?" Odin asked loudly. The Asgardians chuckled at his comment and I could feel my face grow red with embarrassment. "Isn't that right girl?"
"I said my name is Calliope," I hissed at the old man.
"Speak up, girl."
"My name is Calliope, aka Lady Rodriguez, but you can call me Star Ray since it seems too difficult for you to remember my name, Grandpa."
"Watch your tongue," a guard yells at me. "You are in the presence of the All-Father, King of Asgard, and protector of the nine realms."
"Yeah, unlike your King, I am young, and my memory is just fine. I am well aware of whom I speak to, Ser Meryn," I joke, sadly my Game of Thrones reference went over everyone's head since no one here has ever seen the show. "Plus, I hate disrespectful people. If I'm going to be treated like I'm inferior simply because I was born on Earth without a golden crown on my head, then I'll hold no respect to those who treat me unfairly."
"Unfairly, you say," Odin said with a tremor of annoyance. "You are given a room here at the palace and a seat at my table. I have treated you far kinder than you deserve."
"I deserve hospitality as your guest and ally. I also deserve to be called by my name, but you refer to me as girl or child."
"Are you not a female now, child," the old man laughs, as does the majority of his lackeys.
"I am, old man, but I was given a name for a reason," I mock the King. He stops smiling when the comment leaves my mouth. "What's wrong? Do you not wish to be called what you are, old man."
"Listen-"
"I rather not," I said, standing from my seat. "I'm no longer willing to entertain those with no manners."
I grab a slice of bread from my plate and leave the dining room. No one follows me as I exit, and I'm willing to bet Thor is having his hands full covering me. I just couldn't help it! I do my best to be kind and respectful, but everyone loves to push me. I mean, how hard is it to call someone by their given name. Just because I was born differently, I get disrespected. Geeze is the entire galaxy filled with racist jerks.
Nonetheless, I feel guilty for causing a scene, especially; when Thor and Frigga went so far as to make me feel welcomed. Still, I refuse to be treated less than equal. I spent my entire life bowing my head to those around me, and I'm not going back to that now!
For the rest of the morning, I kept walking through the halls alone until I hit a set of stairs. Deciding there's no harm in walking down there, I descend. When I reach the bottom of the stairs, I'm faced with another long hallway with guards on each side. Since none of them stop me, I continue walking to the end, where a large, black metal door stands with two guards on each side.
I try to walk inside when the Guards finally stops me, saying, "What business do you have here?"
"What's behind those doors?" I ask in return, ignoring his question. I make sure to keep my voice soft as I speak, so I don't annoy the guards.
"The dungeons."
They have the dungeons beneath the palace? Isn't that a bit dangerous? I mean, what if a riot breaks out one day? I thought to myself as a thought pops into my head. Isn't Loki in here then? I wonder how they're treating him. I hope he's rotting considering all the lives he's taken for power's sake.
"Can I enter?"
"Why would you want to?"
"Is Loki there?"
"Why would a child such as yourself want to see a criminal like him?"
"Well, my name is Star Rar, and I'm one of the Avengers who fought alongside Prince Thor. I was responsible for taking Loki down on Earth, and my people suffered greatly due to him. I just want to see him, nothing more."
The guard I'm speaking with looks conflicted. I know he wants to say no, but he doesn't. He looks to the other guards for one second before sighing in defeat.
"Very well, I will allow you to enter, but do not stay long and do not touch anything. Understood?"
"Yes, of course."
As the guards open the doors to the prison, I begin to feel nervous. Stepping inside, I'm greeted with the sight of a dozen or more cells. Instead of bars or glass, there is a force field of some kind keeping the inmates inside. The prisoners crowd to the front of their cells to see me, all the while keeping a safe distance from the force field. Even a certain trickster who dares to smirk in my direction walks to the very front to see me.
"Well, if it isn't the magnificent child, Star Ray, here to bless me with her presence," the man sneers down at me. "Are you here to gloat, child?"
Now annoyed with the man, I make my way to his cell. Standing right in front of him, I begin to speak. "I have a blasted name, you moron! If you don't remember it, then ask. It's not hard! Here's an example of how to ask someone for their name. Hey, I don't know your name. Can you tell me what it is? Thank you. See, it isn't hard!"
When I'm done yelling, Loki has leaned back and raised an eyebrow at me. I guess I did let my temper get the best of me this time. I really need to learn how to get a handle on it.
"I do recall your name, Calliope..."
"Oh…" I said, not knowing what to do now. An awkward silence fills the air as I try to think of what to say next. "Why did you call me child then?!"
"I thought you came here to gloat."
"I didn't!"
"Why are you yelling?"
"I-I don't know," I exclaim, throwing my hands in the air. Taking a deep breath to collect myself, I start speaking again. "I came here to see how they were treating you."
"Ah, and you were hoping I was being tortured, didn't you?"
"Not exactly," I counter, looking behind him before giving him my attention once more. "Just hoped you would have an empty cell with only a bed to sit on. Seems like that's too much to ask for considering you're a former prince of Asgard. If only the people you killed could see this now. They would be rolling over in their graves."
"A few lives-"
"A few? Within two days, you took eighty lives. I don't even have the number of lives you took by the end of your stay on Earth. I'm not surprised you don't care about the lives you took, but don't try to demean them either."
"As if you care."
"Excuse me?"
"Barton told me quite a bit about you, little star."
"It's Star Ray to you, trickster."
"You still haven't denied what I said. So you admit that you do not care for the lives around you."
"I won't lie; it would be pointless to do so," I shrug my shoulders at the man in front of me. "I'm not ashamed about it either. I know myself too well."
"Most would be."
"I'm not like most beings."
"No, you are not..." he mutters as he goes to sit on a couch in his cell. "Very well, I will not disrespect the lives I took. If you are honest, then I will be as well."
"I somehow doubt that, but it's not like it matters in the end."
"Why is that?"
"Because the way you're looking at me is the same way that idiotic King looks at me. As if I'm beneath him."
Loki laughs at my insult as he stands once more to approach me. "You are aware that you are in Asgard, correct? Speaking as such about the King is enough to-"
"I don't care. If Odin is going to treat me like a bug simply because I wasn't born the same as him, then all respect for the man has gone out the window. I refuse to allow anyone to treat me like I'm some kind of bug just because I'm Hispanic or the fact that I come from a different planet. I hate racism in any form. Also, who cares if he's a King! We have a president in the United States, and we're allowed to speak our minds about them to their face. Kings, Emperors, Presidents..., even politicians are servants to the people. We don't serve them; they serve the people!"
Loki looks shocked that I spoke so freely about the man who is called King. For a moment, he is speechless as he looks at me. I don't believe anyone has spoken so freely in front of him. He must be used to the lies and the two-faced ways of his society.
"You say this now, but I doubt you would say it to him," Loki finally said, regaining his smirk.
"I actually did..."
"Pardon?"
"During breakfast in front of everyone, I back talked to the old man because he kept referring to me as child or girl. I didn't yell, but I didn't exactly treat him kindly either."
"My dear, do you believe Thor will be able to save you from him?"
"Don't know, and I don't care. By the way, it's Star Ray."
"You amuse me," Loki chuckles to himself. "Out of all the mortals, I've never met one such as you."
"Don't know if that's a good or bad thing."
"Well, I suppose it depends on the person, does it not? In any case, your wild spirit is not one I'm accustomed to. How long will you be here?"
"Well-" before I can finish speaking, the guard from earlier is calling for me. "Not long, I guess. Goodbye, Loki."
"Until next time, Calliope."
Leaving the prison, I make my way back outside and up the stairs. Waiting for me on the other side is Thor, and he doesn't look too happy at the moment.
"Hey, Thor..." I gently say as I walk to the prince. I'm not sure how upset he is with me about what happened this morning but I'm willing to bet he's at least annoyed with me.
"What were you doing down there for so long?"
"I was talking to Loki."
"Why," inquired Thor in amazement. "Do you know how that makes you look in the eyes of my people?"
"Thor, the majority of your people look down on me because I'm from Earth. I don't care about their opinion."
Thor lets out a low sigh and mutters something incomprehensible. He looks at me with a stern face, but it slowly melts away to reveal a gentle smile. He waves me forward, and I follow him as we walk through the castle.
"Both my mother and I defended you," Thor explained to me quietly. "My father is furious with you, but we managed to convince him to leave you be. I am well accustomed to you and the way your people speak freely to one another."
"Thank you, Thor."
"All I ask in return is that you mind my father in the future. As I said, I am used to the way you are, but he is not."
"I'll try harder to be patient in the future."
"Good, now I imagine you must be hungry. We will go to lunch, get you a fresh change of clothes, and then the infirmary once again."
This time when Thor and I went to the dining hall, we were alone. We spoke about a variety of things. His duties here on Asgard and how he misses Earth and its people. I talked about what I was up to on Earth, and I did my best to bypass anything that might be upsetting. Once we finished and I changed into a new outfit, we walked to the infirmary, where the physicians were waiting for us.
Like the day before, the physicians were very patient with me. The Asgardians found out quickly that I detest doctors and laying on tables. PTSD really is something else, ain't it?
Thankfully, Thor never left my side. He even held my hand when they started doing the exams today. At first, it was the normal scan to check if they missed anything the day before. Next, they went more in-depth as they checked my blood. I had to warn them about the toxicity, but they were well-prepared thanks to Thor. Four vials were taken, and a part of me wanted to take it back, but Thor reassured me that the samples will be destroyed later by his own hand if need be.
As time passed, nothing could be found. Thor and I thanked the staff as we left the room. At this point, I'm confused about the findings. I wasn't the only one who didn't understand the results.
"Perhaps we are going about this the wrong way," Thor murmured. "I will ask for more tests to be done on your blood samples, but the best course of action may be to ask another for assistance."
"Who?"
"My mother has vast knowledge when it comes to magic. She may be able to help."
"Do you know where she is?"
"No, but I can find her," Thor told me as he leads me to the courtyard. In front of us, I see plenty of Asgardians sparring with one another. "In the meantime, why don't you join them."
"Fabio Lanzoni said what?"
"What?"
"What?"
"Stop, Calliope, I never understand your references," Thor groans like a child. It's actually pretty funny to see him get confused. "You and Stark say these odd things, but I don't understand you!"
"I think that's why we do it. 'Cause it frustrates you when we do this."
"Fine, but you will stay here and train until I return."
"But why can't I come with you?"
"It will take some time; that's why. I must complete a few tasks before I look for my mother. I also want you to improve your fighting skills while you are here."
"Am I that bad?"
"...Brute strength will not always save you, Calliope."
"I've been training-"
"I know, but it may help to get more practice done with another partner who will not easily be taken down simply because you are stronger."
"Fine, but I won't like it."
"I promise they are good people," Thor states as he leads me through the crowd. He begins speaking to a few of the soldiers, instructing them what to do. "Listen well, men, this is Star Ray from the Avengers. She is learning how to hone her skills as a warrior. You will train with her until I return."
The men readily agree, and Thor leaves me with them. Left alone with the group of burly Asgardian warriors, I'm at a loss. I have no idea where to start.
"Star Ray, do you know how to wield a weapon?" one of the men asked. This man is as tall as Thor, but his hair is shorter. He also has a scar going across his face from his forehead to his jaw.
"No, I never held one before. I usually fight with my fist."
"Very well, we shall do the same."
All of the men put down their weapons as they get ready to face me. It's decided that we will have one on one fights so they can examine the best way to teach me.
"Alright, sounds good to me," I respond to the man with the scar. I'm glad Thor allowed me to change clothes earlier. Now I'm wearing black leather pants, a red leather corset that has a plain shirt underneath with black boots that go up to my calf. Thor apologized for the style since Asgard is old school when it comes to fashion, but I don't mind. It's a huge step up from the dress. I can't stand wearing things like that.
As the man and I get ready to fight, I try to think of a way to approach him. He definitely has more experience than I do. He's taller than me, and he seems to have more muscles than Thor himself. I'm not sure if that means he's stronger than me, but I shouldn't ignore that fact either. So how do I start?
Suddenly, someone says go, and the man charges. I automatically go into a split once he's close enough, surprising him. I spin on my back and launch myself feet first into the air. This, in turn, knocks him down momentarily; however, he rises to his feet quickly. This time I charge at the same time as he does. When he goes to punch me, I duck under his right arm to drive in a few quick jabs to his side before kicking him down. Now on his stomach, I jump on top to pin him down.
"Surrender," I ordered as he begins to struggle underneath my grasp.
"I yield," he mutters. I get off of him and help him to his feet once he does. He smiles down at me as he says, "I see why Prince Thor respects you as a warrior. You are very quick on feet, and your tactics work well."
"Thanks but it wasn't until recently that I became proficient in fighting."
"Well, allows us to continue to put you to the test."
"Sounds great," I smiled at the men. Smiling back at me, the next man readies himself to fight me, and I begin to relax from my tense state. When I'm on Earth, I'm always uncomfortable whenever I'm being taught by others. Here, however, I feel a bit freer. Maybe it's because I know I can't easily hurt the Asgardians, or perhaps it's something else. All I know is I actually begin to enjoy myself with the soldier. I even start joking around with them, which is a first for me. I have never been able to talk to others, but here it's almost like I'm one of them.
This is a big difference in how I was treated this morning, and I wonder why that is. I kind of want to ask one of the men during our break, but I refrain from doing so. Instead, I focus on getting to know each man in front of me. Thus far, I have beaten all of them once or twice and tied in a few instances. I narrowly avoid losing, but if I hadn't been training with S.H.I.E.L.D. I most likely would have lost by now. Plus, if they had their weapons, they would have an advantage, but the same could be said about me using my other abilities.
Just as I finish fighting a man named Arne, the match ending in another tie, someone speaks up from behind me.
"May I have the next fight?" the woman asked us. Turning around, I see Lady Sif, Thor's friend.
"Oh, yeah, sorry," I say, taking a step back from the group. Lady Sif smiles down at me as she shakes her head.
"No, I meant I wish to fight you."
"Oh! Um, okay... but why?"
"Thor, as of late, has spoken a great deal of his new comrades on Midgard. He claims you are fierce warriors, and I wish to fight one of you due to this. It is not everyday Thor complements a fellow warrior."
"I guess, but I haven't been fighting for long, and I'm just learning how to stand my ground," I point out to the older woman, which in turn confuses her.
"Then why does Thor speak so highly of you?"
"Well, when we fought the Chitauri, I was using all of my powers."
"And you aren't at the moment? Do you think that little of us?"
"No, of course not! It's just that my powers are different than what you might think. I can control and blast radiation as I please, and even though you're Asgardian, I don't think it's healthy for you to come in contact with that substance."
"Hmm, perhaps not," Sif agreed, putting down her weapon and getting into a fighting stance. "In any case, I wish to fight against you. Will you oblige me?"
"Alright, fine," I respond hesitantly to the older woman as I get into my own stance. The warriors around us form a large circle to watch us.
Looking at the woman across from me, I begin to evaluate my options. I don't know who's stronger out of the two of us, but I'm well aware she has more experience than me. She's taller than me, and she might be faster as well. This won't be an easy fight to win. Someone signals to start and Sif charges towards me at full speed. She swings her left fist twice, then her right once, before dropping down to kick my feet from under me. All the while, I'm stumbling around, barely keeping myself from arm's length. As the fight continues with Sif close to victory, I try to think of a way out of this. Still, everything seems to stop once she finally makes contact. Her left leg hits me hard on my side, sending a few feet back.
Refusing to lose, I jump back onto my feet into a fighting stance once again. Charging forward, I begin to send a flurry of punches Sif's way, but she easily dodges. I try to mix in my kicks with my punches, but it doesn't work in my favor as she grabs my leg and throws me down onto my back. The match ends with Sif as the victor.
"You're good, for a mortal," Sif states as she extends her hand to me. I take it, and she helps me to my feet. "However, you're movements are predictable and stiff. I suggest finding another fighting style that fits you better. A technique that requires quick fluid transitions, able to quickly change the direction in which force is issued."
"Thanks, I'll keep that in mind when I go back to Earth. By the way, you're awesome at fighting."
"I should be considering I'm the best female warrior in Asgard."
"Well, it's no wonder I lost then," I mutter a reply. Sif clearly hears me, and we both laugh. The group that once surrounded us now dispurses to go their own ways.
"I must admit, I was not sure what to make of you when we first met, Lady Rodriguez. Now that I've had a moment with you, I understand why Thor chose to befriend you. You have a fire within you, much like his own."
"Uh, thanks, I guess," I replied with a smile, scratching my head back to my earlier thoughts I decide right now is the best time to ask a few questions. "Sif, do you mind if I ask you a question?"
"Not at all."
"Why does Odin look down at those from E- I mean Midgard. Thor once claimed that he's Midgards champion. It just doesn't make sense why your King would treat me so differently compared to how his son does."
"Ah, well, it would confuse most, wouldn't it," Sif laughs silently, but it isn't a real laugh. Clearly, somethings up. "To be honest, I'm not too sure why the All-Father treats you this way. It could be due to Thor."
"I don't understand what you mean. What did he do?"
"Well, some time ago, Thor was banished to Midgard. He could only return if he proved himself worthy, which he did in the end. However, he is no longer the same Thor I knew for centuries... Now it seems his mind is elsewhere. Of course, he fulfills his duties as Prince of Asgard, but he continually thinks of Midgard. As well as those who live there..."
"He fell in love, didn't he?"
"He did, and that worries the All-Father. The future King of Asgard must not focus on one realm but all nine."
"I see, but-"
"We must save this discussion for another time," Sif abruptly whispers to me. She takes a bow as she speaks, "My queen, I did not expect your presence here today."
Turning around, I see Thor and his mother approaching us. Taking Sif's lead, I bow to the Queen before standing up to my full height. I don't want to slouch in front of the Queen. Maybe Odin, but not Frigga.
"Yes, well, I came to see our guest," Queen Frigga answered, as she turns to face me. "I hope I'm not disturbing anything."
"No, never," I'm quick to reply. I mentally smack myself considering how suspicious I sound at the moment. Thank the Lorde I'm not a spy because I would get caught so fast.
"I was wondering if you would join my son and I for a walk?"
"I would be delighted to."
After bidding Sif a farewell, I join the royal duo for their walk. At first, all seemed well until we took an unexpected turn. Walking at a quick pace, we reach a hallway far from anyone's view. When we walk to the end of the hall, Thor turns around to stand guard as Frigga mutters a few words under her breath. The wall that once stood before us disappears, and the two usher me inside.
"That went well," Frigga said, and with a wave of her hand, the lights turned on, illuminating the room. The room itself is bare of anything, and I have to wonder what the importance of this room is when nothing useful is in here. "Lady Rodriguez, my son, has made me aware of your predicament. It would be an honor to help you."
"Thank you," I stutter back to the woman. I had honestly forgotten about asking the Queen for help with my dilemma. "I hope I'm not disturbing you?"
"Nonsense, if anything, I hope this will make up for Odin's outlandish behavior this morning."
"Well, I didn't exactly help by being rude. I hope you can forgive me."
"Do not worry, dear, but let's focus on the dilemma at hand. In your own words, can you tell me what is happening?"
"Hmm, I guess I should start with the Battle of New York, then. While I was fighting, I realized my powers had gotten stronger. Since then, I have kept track of my powers and watched them grow. I decided to ask a colleague that I trust to have a look. You see, Dr. Banner has a similar predicament with his own body, so he alone would be sufficient to help me. However, after only a few blood samples and scans, he could determine a few things. One, he needs to perform a lot more tests because the samples he took aren't nearly enough. Two, the radiation that is within me is not of Earth. It's similar to cosmic radiation apparently. Three, he doesn't know anything about it. This type of radiation is different from the ones we are accustomed to on Earth and the solar system we are apart of. Banner also has no clue how my body accepted this radiation when the gene that is required for this isn't there. Finally, my power is still growing... it may overwhelm me one day and destroy me along with those around me."
"I see," Frigga replied, turning from me to take a few steps forward. "I can not promise anything, but perhaps I can shed some light on the situation."
"That's all I want."
Frigga nods her head and raises her hand to perform a few motions. In a matter of seconds, the room transforms into a lab/study. Frigga waves her hand towards me, so I walk to her were a bare bed awaits me. Laying down, I do my best to steady my nerves. Thor tries to move to my side, but his mother stops him.
"I understand you wish to comfort her, but you can not stand near her. In order for me to accomplish these spells accurately, she must be alone. Stand by the door."
Thor follows her orders, albeit reluctantly. After a few more moments, Queen Frigga is ready to begin. It starts simple enough. A few spells to check my overall being, my vitals, the works, I guess. Next comes the more intense spells.
"I must warn you that it may feel uncomfortable as these are invasive to the body."
I don't bother responding; instead, I nod my head to the older woman. I squeeze my eyes shut as a slight burning sensation erupts throughout my skin. My whole body begins to shake, and if I'm being honest, I don't know how much time has passed. To me, it feels like hours, but it could have been minutes. I hate lab tables! I hate tests! I know it'll be worth it in the end, but right now it's just freaking me out.
"That's odd," I hear the Queen mutter to herself. I open my eyes to look at her confused face.
"What do you mean, mother?" Thor asked her as he walks to stand beside her.
"I now understand why this Dr. Banner could not understand the cosmic powers within Lady Rodriguez. The radiation is not of these realms, and it's presence in her body continues to grow. She is indeed evolving."
"What does that mean for her? Will she suffer?"
"I'm not sure, but I do have a way to find out. Before I do so, I must ask Lady Rodriguez how she came in contact with this radiation."
Both older beings turn their attention to me, but I don't dare look them in the eyes. Instead, I look at the ceiling as I clench my jaw and I feel my hands forming into a fist. Just thinking about those years stuck in that blasted cell is enough to fill me with anger and terror. Watching everyone around me die horrible deaths due to the experimentation was a nightmare. Being helpless to stop it was more than words can describe.
"Calliope-"
"I'm fine, Thor," I reassure the prince as I take one last moment to calm myself. "It was years ago when it happened. My sister and I were orphans taken in by a few scientists who claimed they wanted children but could bear any of their own. They took us to an underground facility where they performed experiments on me."
"Why was your sister spared?"
"I promised them I would cooperate if they left her alone. Plus, I was deemed the perfect candidate. I don't know why but I was."
"And she wasn't?"
"No, but I guess that's due to us having different parents."
"You and your sister are not related," Thor asked me, completely bewilder by my statement.
"We're half-sisters," I explain to the man. "The same mother, but we have different fathers. I didn't find out until those freak scientists started experimenting on me."
"...How were these experiments conducted?"
"At first, it started with injections that went in the main arteries. The first series of shots didn't hurt too much, and no side effects were present. I guess that meant I passed, so they moved on to the next set. These were injected into the major muscle groups, the spinal cord, my eyes. Once I was deemed ready, they placed us into gas chambers, beds filled with some kind of liquid that felt like it was melting my skin, and rooms that sent rays into our bodies."
"How many of you were there?"
"I don't know, but I was subject 501," I explained to the two aliens. I heard Thor curse under his breath. I wonder what he's thinking about.
"Is there any other method they used?" the strained voice of the Queen sounded out.
"Not that I can remember, no."
"Do you know what it is they used on you?"
"No… we were never allowed out of our cells unless it was for testing."
"From my analysis, I can tell your body is completely human, but there is something within your biological make-up that is allowing you to thrive with this substance."
Confused as to what she meant, I begin to question the older woman. "Thrive? But you said-"
"I do not know if you will suffer in the future, but as of right now, your body is flourishing. It continues to change and advance in ways I did not expect."
"So, what's doing this then?"
"As Ser Banner explained, it is not a gene. I do not fully understand it myself, but I believe your body was injected with new cells that changed your DNA, making it easier to withstand the cosmic radiation that courses through your entire system. Perhaps due to your father, you were able to not only withstand it but accept this into your body."
I don't know how to describe what I'm feeling right now. To know something like that is possible is frightening. What's worse is this power continues to grow, and it doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon. My mind is spinning with endless possibilities. To think all of this is possible because I inherited a genetic jackpot from my parents.
"So will it become too powerful to control in the future?"
"There is only one way to find out," Frigga states as her left-hand reaches out to me, glowing a vicious yellow. I shut my eyes, waiting for the worst, but it never comes.
Opening my eyes, I notice we are no longer alone. Odin appears between Frigga and Thor, holding onto his wife's arm. Silently, Frigga lowers her arm, magic disappearing as Odin releases her from his grasp. The old man doesn't look too happy right now with us, but he does not yell, nor does he begin to argue. In a quiet yet eerie voice, he says, "No."
He left no room for arguments or questions. Moving past the two, he extends his hand to me. Uncertain of his intentions, I waver for a moment before I accept it. Silently he leads me out of the room, with the other two trailing behind us.
"It is time for you to leave," Odin quietly tells me before speaking to his wife and son. "Thor, you may accompany us to the Bifrost. Frigga, wait here."
Neither one argue with their King as we make our way to the stables. Odin doesn't even give me a chance to say goodbye to Frigga as he sits me in front of him on his eight-legged horse. The entire journey to the Bifrost is silent, and I begin to worry. How did Odin know where to find us? Better, yet why did he stop Frigga?
When we arrive at the Bifrost, Heimdall is there waiting for us. Odin tells us to wait outside as he walks inside to speak with the guardian of the gate. Now that we're alone I figure this is the best time to speak to Thor about what happened.
"Thor, what's going on?"
"I am not too sure," the prince mutters a reply, looking worried. "I apologize that I could not help you more."
"It's okay. You did all that you could. I'm grateful you and Queen Frigga went above and beyond to help me. It makes me happy knowing I have friends that I can trust. Although I'm sorry if I got you in trouble."
"Do not worry, my friend. All is well… I hope," Thor mutters to himself in the end. Looking at the man I see his eyes filled with worry thus my own triples. I didn't even notice him calling my name until he nudges me. "Calliope, when you return to Midgard, take care of yourself."
"I will," I whisper to the man, but he isn't having any of it.
"I mean it," Thor said, gently but firmly grabbing my shoulders as he spoke. "My friend, I worry about you. True, for some time I knew of your freedom, due to Heimdall's watchful gaze, but I also know of the rest."
"You mean…"
"Yes, I know you were without a home for some time. I am also aware of how sad you are."
"Heimdall can sense my emotions?"
"What? No, I merely meant that ever since you arrived I have simply noticed you were not well."
"Oh, I mean," I trail off, not knowing what to say. "I don't know Thor. Honestly, I've been trying but sometimes it's like I can't move. I know everyone keeps telling me to but it hurts."
"Then why move?"
"Well, they said it's healthy to do so. I've been stuck in one place for far too long."
"True, but have you ever come to terms with what has held you for you long?"
"I thought I did?"
"If you think it, then you have not," Thor said, poking me on the head before placing his fist on top of my heart. "But if you feel it then you have."
Unknowingly, tears began to fill my eyes as the blond pats my head. Having Thor tell me it's ok to basically be broken and to move at my own pace is reassuring. This isn't an excuse to stay depressed, no, but its understanding. He's acknowledging my state of mind and telling me to take my time to recover.
"Thank you, Thor."
"If you ever require my assistance, you need only ask."
"The same goes for you."
The blond surprises me with a hug, and after only a moment, I return it. There is more in this hug than just a goodbye, but it ends before I can accurately describe it.
"Thor, return to the palace immediately," Odin roughly orders his son.
Thor looks like he wants to fight it, but he doesn't. With one last smile sent to me, he goes to his horse without another word being uttered. Heimdall dips his head to me as he exits the Bifrost, and I do the same as I enter. On the platform stands Odin, King of Asgard. However, the face he wears is that of a tired man who looks close to ending a long tiresome journey.
"I-"
"No," He says once again. "Allow me to speak."
Not wanting to anger the man, I nod my head, and he continues.
"I could not allow my Queen to continue her examination. I feared what could happen if she did. I will tell you what you need to know as Raja has ordered me to do so."
"Raja? Who's that?"
"Raja," Odin utters, his voice soft and filled with wonder. I'm almost shocked by this new side of him. I never thought I'd see him look or sound like this, but today is filled with surprises. "Raja is a being that is far beyond this universe. She is a mysterious entity who lives beyond our plane of existence. She is grace, strength, and power. Blind fools such as myself are putty within her grasp. I met her once before, and to this day, I long to see her once more."
"I-"
"I understand why you are perplexed, child, but be patient."
"No, I will not, I-"
I want to argue but whatever I say dies in my throat. Odin just looks so worn down and... disappointed. I feel bad for the man. This isn't the same King I faced this morning or the night before. The man who stands above me looks like he's looking up into the stars, hoping for more. Sadly reality has led him here, to me. I remain silent.
"A millennium ago, I was a different man with other goals. Raja came to me in the dead of night when the entire realm was asleep. She ordered that I leave my ambitions and create a new path. One that led to peace, and I did. I followed her instructions word for word. Now I have only one thing left to do. To tell you that all will end as it should and to give you this."
In his hand is a piece of folded up parchment. The paper looks old, probably due to how long the man has had it. I go to take it, but he doesn't let go. I look up, and his eyes are boring into mine.
"I have held this parchment close to my heart all this time. No one has ever read it. Not even I have," Odin whispers as he releases both the note and a shaky breath.
Taking the note from him, I take a step back to read it. Inside is only one word that I'm not sure how to read. It's written in a different language, making it impossible to read.
"I don't understand?"
"You will, in time," Odin said, and the next thing I know, the Bifrost is moving, and I'm hurtling to Earth at the speed of light.
