Supergirl is the property of DC comics and the CW. I am borrowing the characters for a little fun and storytelling. After All, what better way to show the love for hero's than to extend their adventures. Caution: Their is attempt at suicide in this story. Do not read if this should be an issue. It is limited, but I would not want anyone to read who this would affect wrongly.
"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!" Supergirls' screams echoed across National City. The white energy beam created by LCorp to stop this type of alien had hit her at the same time that the alien she was battling had sent his spikes forward burying deep within her skin. She felt a sharp pain in her spine followed by what felt like a cascade of cold water. Whoever had been aiming either had misjudged their target or had wanted to hit Supergirl. She would not find out right away. "Agent Danvers, help!" Supergirl had called out through the comms. She dropped like a stone into National City Park only for her body to be struck minutes later by several baseball bats laced with kryptonite. Several anti-alien terrorists had been watching and ran to see if they could get lucky in seeing Supergirl dead. When they had found her injured the terrorists had taken advantage of the situation. As she lost consciousness Lena's words from several months ago reverberated in her mind.
"I don't want Supergirl dead. I just want her to suffer like I suffered." Kara had suffered prior to this battle. There had been problems in her family. Eliza had become sick suddenly, very suddenly. Alex and Kara had gone home only to find out that Eliza was battling breast cancer. They had spent several weeks with her during treatment prior to this battle. J'onn was there now with her as Kara had needed to turn in several in depth stories.
The new owner of CATCO while impressed with Kara's award winning reporting had been more demanding of Kara's next wanted shorter, quick eye catching stories that would make consumers click on the ads that were now a staple on the CATCO website. There had been several heated arguments to the point that Kara had begun to think she needed to leave CATCO. But she would need to decide on a new job.
Colonel Haley had talked one on one with Supergirl noticing her inner pain and exhaustion lately. In fact, Haley was the one positive that Kara listened too. She encouraged Supergirl to take some down time and to measure her interventions. It hadn't worked. Kara missed Lena. The young CEO still wasn't talking with her, though Alex said she had come by the DEO and spent several hours next to Supergirl's bed. Alex had told Kara she saw the young Luthor talking to her, but what had been said was lost to the endless nights of unconsciousness. Nia, Brainy, and her sister were good friends, but Lena made her believe anything was possible. Before she had revealed she was Supergirl Lena would hold her and tell her everything was going to be alright. Lena would push her to keep going, standing by her all the way. She trusted Lena beyond a shadow of a doubt. All that was gone now. The days were just too hard for her.
"You have to keep trying Kara. You can't just sit here and not try." Alex said as she moved around the couch to where Kara Danvers sat on the couch. The result of the fight months earlier had left Supergirl broken. Her powers had not resurfaced. Supergirl was paralyzed from the waist down. Bionic leg braces helped Kara to walk. Instead of the user forcing the motion in the control system the device built with kryptonian technology gives the user complete control to stand, sit, walk, and rise. Kara only needed a watch on her wrist that allowed her the ability to select what she needed to do. She still needed to use metal canes to help her walk. Eventually the system would become autonomous and anticipate her needs. For now though she needed to select what she had to do.
Kara had made sure that Alex and DEO hadn't gone running to LCorp or Lena. On top of it, Kara had made sure to not be where Lena could see her. Jonn had made sure to take Supergirls place making appearances so National City believed Supergirl was okay. The government had announced that Supergirl was going on a deep space mission for the good of the planet. Most bought it. Some wondered what was really going on. J'onn disguised as Supergirl had given a rousing speech before she left four weeks ago. Lena Luthor and her new secretary had been in the front row. Supergirl had nodded at her and left. Since then, Kara Danver's has kept a low profile. Her bosses explanation when inquiries were made was that Kara Danver's was under deep cover for a special story. Andrea Rojas had been informed that Kara Danver's had been a casualty of the alien attack on the city. They had set it up for Andrea to visit her in the hospital. The CEO of CATCO had been shocked at how broken her star reporter was now. They had worked out a deal where Kara would write and report on selected stories. Kara was able to do ninety percent of the research at home. Nia would do the leg work for the other ten percent. It had worked out well. Kara Danver's still turned in weekly stories for the click bait on the website and longer stories for the had made sure that Andrea was sworn to secrecy. Kara would release the information on her accident when she wanted too. Andrea had agreed. The CEO checked on her weekly stating that she was worried about her.
"I'm fine Alex. Just go. I don't want Colonel Haley over here again." Kara said softly as she looked up at her sister. At first Kara's emotions and overall attitude had been hopeful, but after a month and the slow progress of physical therapy her mood had worsened. Nia, Brainy, Jonn, Winn, and several others had rallied behind Kara. The public saw her sunny side through articles and positiveness. Her family and close friends saw the daily struggle. Alex knew Kara wanted Lena back badly, but the reporter had been locked out of the CEO's life after Lena found out Kara's secret of being Supergirl from Lex. Even after Kara had revealed to her friend who she was and the reasons there had been little contact.
"You are not fine. You are far from fine." Alex said as she thought of the discussion Kara had with Colonel Haley. Colonel Haley had discovered Supergirl's identity because of the accident. Strangely, her viewpoint of the Kryptonian had changed. Alex had discovered her bosses new found knowledge one night after Kara had been released home. She had let herself into Kara's apartment to find Haley and Kara in a heated game of Catan. The two women had brokered a truce and agreed to work together. Alex knelt in front of Kara.
"Alex, I am just tired. Standing, walking, and sitting takes a great deal of effort. Please, just go." Kara turned away from Alex so she wouldn't see the frustration and ever present pain.
"I'm worried. You are withdrawing from people, the public, family, friends, and even your job." Alex pleaded with Kara. "We need you Kara. I need you." Alex pulled her into a tight hug. "Don't give up. Please." Kara nodded into her shoulder even as tears fell. Alex's phone chirped again. She squeezed her sister one more time. "I'll be by at ten in the morning to pick you up for your physical therapy. No arguments." Kara nodded and swiveled as she watched Alex leave. She heard her sister lock the door. She leaned back against the couch and stared at the ceiling. Her physical therapist Emily said she was gaining back movement. When Kara had asked her how long till she walked on her own Emily had told Kara maybe a year. She had also told Kara she may not ever walk independently of the braces again. That had been a hard day. Kara's doctor had reassured her she could lead a fully functional life. Her psychologist and her were at odds. Kara wasn't talking. Her three weekly sixty minute sessions were periods of prodding and silence. It was why Alex was over today. Alex was the one person getting updates from all the doctors involved. Her sister then passed on a filtered version to Eliza. Kara was thankful that Kelly was there for Alex. Alex at least had someone to talk too.
"I'm sorry Alex. I just can't do this." Kara set her watch. She velcroed her metal canes to her arms, set herself and pushed up. Once up she walked toward the bathroom. A knock on the door stopped her. Of course, Alex's sixth sense would kick in and let her know what Kara had planned. "I'm fine Alex. Go to work." Kara yelled as she turned back toward the bathroom. The knock came again. Kara's head fell forward against her chest. "Alright, I'm coming. Give me a minute. I don't know why you don't use your key." Kara moved forward struggling step by step. When she got to the door she braced herself, unlocked the door, and opened it. "You know I told you I would be fin…" It was not Alex. "Lena." Kara's voice echoed with surprise. Lena looked at Kara in surprise as she surveyed the Super's body. The brace anchored above her waist with the controller pack on her back. The titanium infrastructure running down the sides with the technology sections along her hips and calves. The metal canes anchored to Kara's forearms allowing her stability as she walked. Kara's voice interrupted her thoughts."What can I do for you?" Kara growled angrily as she remembered that her now present friend only wanted her to suffer.
"I wondered if I could come in and talk with you?" Lena asked as Kara stood blocking the entrance. Kara shook her head no. She would suffer, but she wasn't about to allow Lena to gloat over her in her own apartment.
"I don't think that would be wise. I think you've said everything that needs to be said." Kara said, beginning to close the door. Lena stuck her foot in the door, stopping it from closing.
"Please. Kara, please give me a chance." Lena pleaded, grabbing the door. Kara turned on Lena.
"I will not have you gloating. Are you here to tell me I told you so? Are you here to make fun of my suffering? If you are, great. You win. So you can just leave now." Kara growled out attempting to close the door only for Lena to double her effort at keeping it open. Kara sighed deeply even as a groan issued from her lips. Finally, she turned away from the door and walked back into her apartment. She didn't care if Lena stayed or went. She was done with the pain. She walked into the kitchen and opened her refrigerator. She pulled a bottle of water. She then went to the center counter and set it down. Lena had come in and set her purse by the door. Kara reached for the pain pills on the counter, opened it, and poured out two. She then opened the bottle of water. While she was taking them she noticed that Lena was looking around her apartment. It had changed a great deal. The furniture had been paired down making it easier for Kara to get around. The bedroom had a space holder for her bionic brace system. Once out of it, Kara was on her own. Tonight she had reassured Alex she could get herself to bed. Her aide would arrive in the morning to help her with bathing, dressing and breakfast. Alex would be by around ten to take her to physical therapy. No longer did Kara hold game nights. She hadn't been to the alien bar since her falling out with Lena. She hadn't even gone by Noonan's. She didn't care to mix with her friends when all she saw in their eyes was pity. Nor did they attempt to contact her or lure her out after the first few times she said no.
"I'm not here to gloat. I'm here to apologize. I was wrong months ago when I said you should suffer. I didn't get it Kara. You were the first person who ever offered me friendship. When I found out you were Supergirl I was sure there was more to keeping it a secret from me. I didn't understand when you said people got hurt around you." Lena explained as she came to the center counter. Kara grimaced hard and shook her head. Did Lena think this would heal anything?
"Great, you didn't get it. So I suppose now you do. Good. There's the door. Leave." Kara said bracing herself and working her canes to move away. Lena had been betrayed so many times that she understood why Kara was so mad at her. But it was hard to see the person who had once offered her hope destroyed now.
"No, I'm not leaving. Not till I say what I want to say." Kara stopped in mid step setting her foot down. She turned carefully. It was almost excruciating for Lena to watch.
"Fine. Speak." Kara said as she braced herself standing up. Hardening her heart and mind to receive the words she just knew were coming from her former friend.
"I was wrong. You hid your identity to protect yourself. Not to humiliate me. You protected me and kept me safe. You took on my brother and the forces of evil to win. Yet, you have suffered more than all the rest. I'm sorry Kara. I want to help you. I want to be there for you. Please, don't turn away from me." Lena begged even as the Super had, had enough.
"Now you want to help me? Now when I am crippled and broken? What would happen if I were to get my powers back? Would you then abandon me again?" Kara yelled at her former friend. "No, you were right Lena. Emotions and feelings are useless in the end. All they do is get you hurt. No! There is no Supergirl anymore. There will never be again. Kara Danver's is a barely there human being. Just leave Lena. You got what you wanted. Be happy." Kara turned away from her friend and walked toward the bathroom. She was done with everything and everyone.
"No!" Lena choked out as she stood deeply shocked. Something had changed deeply inside the Super. Lena saw it plain as day. Kara had no will to try or live. She had done this. They had done this to each other. Kara had always been there for her. She would need to be there for her friend now. She would need to take the anger, hate, and pain that raged inside her friend and directed at her, if she was going to ever get them back to where they were. Lena set her will and moved toward the bathroom.
"Kara, I am not leaving. I am not going. So you can yell at me all you want. I am staying. You can hate me all you want. So just let me have it." Lena said as she opened the door only to find the Super with a razor blade in her hand held five centimeters above her wrist. Lena's mouth dropped open as she looked at Kara. Kara didn't care. She went to cut her wrist as Lena grabbed her hand with the razor. "Nooooo!" Lena yelled at Kara even as she twisted the wrist making the razor fall into the sink. Lena swept it up into her hand to keep it away from Kara. "What do you think you're doing? You can't. You don't give up!" Kara stood now all her rage leveled at the Luthor.
"What do you care?" Kara yelled pushing her body forward attempting to get the razor out of Lena's hand. Lena side stepped Kara as the Super had over calculated her lunge and ended up on the floor. Kara used her arms to roll on her side. "You don't care. You have never really cared. Everything has to be your way. You are just like everyone else. 'Supergirl help me. Supergirl save me.' Well guess what? Newsflash: Supergirl doesn't give a damn anymore." Kara's tears ran down her face from her emotional state even as her body was flooded with pain from the fall. She heard Lena moving around the room and the cabinet in the bathroom opened. She heard Lena remove a box. Her chance to use the razors is now gone. Rao, she was just so tired of trying. Why couldn't they leave her alone? Kara sobbed hard as she laid on her side faced away from the bathroom.
"Come on. Let's get you up." Lena said even as Kara felt strong, warm arms help her into a sitting position. She would not look at Lena. "Alright. We are going to stand now." Lena was standing to her side. She placed her arms around Kara in a lift hold and with the reporters help lifted her up to standing. "I'm going to help you change and get into bed. Then we are going to talk some more." Lena attempted to help the Super to the bedroom now, but Kara pulled away. The Kryptonian began walking to the bed. Once her Bionic assistant was in the charger Kara began to unstrap. She could hold her body and maneuver a little. There was a brace stander that swung into place in front of her to give her leverage so she could move some. Her upper body strength did most of the push and pull to the bed. It was still hard and she wasn't always successful. But she could get into bed most times. Tonight, after the emotional and physical expenditure she knew she would fall. She would not ask Lena for help. She didn't want the help even if she needed it.
"Let me help." Lena said as she moved forward removing the last two velcroed straps from just above the ankle area of Kara's body. Kara jerked away from Lena. Kara's body trembled with instability.
"Get the hell away from me." Kara's anger flared again as she worked to move. Lena came back and helped Kara shift to the bed even though she didn't want the help. Lena could be more stubborn than the Super. Kara allowed Lena to assist, but did not acknowledge her at all beyond that. Once on the bed Lena went to help Kara dress.
"I can do it myself. Just leave Lena. I'm sure you have enough fodder now to make a joke of Supergirl and laugh with your AI." Kara turned away as she began removing her pants. She struggled, but she be damned if she'd show any more weakness in front of her former friend.
"I'm not leaving. I'm going to stay here and help." Lena insisted on moving toward Kara. The young reporter released her pants that were half way off and shoved Lena away.
"GET OUT! You didn't care all these previous months and I doubt you care now. This is probably some experiment for LCorp!" Kara yelled making sure there was no love anywhere in her voice.
"This is not an experiment. I'm not leaving, especially after what I just saw in the bathroom." Lena accused, as her anger rose. Lena's mind still reeling from Kara trying to kill herself. Her friend would never consider that route. Not in a million years. Not her Kara. "How could you even think that was a solution? That the death of Supergirl or Kara Danvers would be okay."
"Man, that Luthor scorpion sure plays a good game. Too bad its sting has already had the effect it wanted. Maybe if you'd get the hell out and shut up I could complete your plan for Supergirl and Kara Danvers." Kara sneered out even as she got her pajama bottoms on. She removed her top no longer caring if Lena was here or not. She'd just find another way at another time. What was one more day of doom and pain when they were all like that?
"Kara, don't. I made a mistake. Please listen." Lena whispered even as the CEO got a good look at the top of Kara's body. There was scarring from the several surgeries she had after falling in the alien attack. Her left shoulder down her front to her hip was scarred badly. Kara pulled the t-shirt over her head covering the evidence of her sacrifice for the city. "I didn't realize how badly you were injured. I'm sorry I abandoned you. I was wrong about emotions. I was wrong about needing you. There's a hole in here," Lena laid her hand on her heart, "that just won't repair. I thought I could fix it with working endless hours on building new technology or by removing the negative emotions, but I couldn't. I need you Kara. I know we can fix this if we just try." Kara's head had fallen causing her hair to cover her face. She wanted to believe Lena. The problem was she couldn't. Her faith in humanity, in her friends, and Lena had been destroyed. Words were so easy for people. Lena knew how to use them just like a sword or a knife. Cutting so you bled out.
"I just don't believe you Lena. I spent months before the fight being manipulated by you. Lex's journals, your AI in Tessmacher's body, working behind the scenes to make sure that Supergirl got into harder and harder fights, testing your new technology on me only to find out you were trying to harm me." Kara turned her face toward her former friend and shook her head. "Just leave me to die. You will have accomplished something Lex never did with Superman. You've already killed my heart. What does it matter if my body dies? Lex would be proud of you. But that's what you always wanted." Kara maneuvered her body into the bed and shut out the light even as Lena stood there stunned at how cruel Kara had gotten. Lena stepped out of the bedroom as she took deep gasping breaths trying to control herself. She could do this. She could change things, but she would have to suffer along with Kara. 'Lex would be proud of you. But that's what you always wanted.' Kara was right, it had been. She always wanted Lex to be proud of her. She wanted her brother back. But now she saw it could never be that way. And she probably killed the one thing that had kept her going. Kara. No she wasn't giving up. Even if Kara hated her she would make sure the Kryptonian would survive. Lena moved to the door of Kara's apartment and locked it. She then turned out the lights and moved into the bedroom. She opened the dresser even as Kara watched through slitted eyes. Lena pulled out a pair of pajamas she had left at the reporters apartment so many months ago and moved into the bathroom to change. Once finished she moved to the other side of the youngest Danver's bed and climbed into that side.
"You can hate me all you want. Trust me. I know I deserve it. I took something precious, our friendship, and threw it away in anger. I will never be able to say sorry enough." Lena whispered in the dark as tears fell down her cheeks. She gripped the blanket as she struggled to explain to Kara what she felt. She so wanted to reach out and hug her friend. "But I am not leaving you again.I am going to stay by your side even when you call me names, push me away, and be totally ugly to me. You are my best friend, Kara. I will make you believe again." Lena's voice cracked, but held firm as her words settled on her friend. Kara shook her head. She did not want to believe. Her heart had been hurt so badly so many times. She just didn't have anything left to believe with inside anymore. So she stayed quiet. She let the pain pills put her to sleep. She knew what the next year would entail. Lena would tire and leave confirming once more to Kara not to let anyone inside.
Eight months later...
"Once more Kara. You did real well that time. Now, turn around. We want you to put more weight on your legs and less on your arms. We are right here. Lena's behind you and I'm in front of you." Terrence the physical therapist assured the Kryptonian. Physical therapy had been excruciating for the Super. Lena had been as good as her word. She worked tirelessly to find ways to assist the Super. The DEO with LCorp had found that directed sunlight helped heal Kara's spinal cord. She spent two hours a day in a special bed where she lay face down. Once on the bed she was strapped in and a program was instituted into a computer that rotated the bed every twenty minutes directing sunlight to a targeted area on her spine. The DEO was finally able to measure how quickly she was healing. Colonel Haley had moved heaven and earth to find new experimental treatments even risking her reputation. LCorp had given the DEO all schematics of the energy beam that had hit Supergirl. The DEO had figured out a special exercise machine to help strengthen the muscles on the Super. Even though her spinal cord had finally healed, months of being confined to a wheelchair and using the walking device had weakened her muscles causing them to atrophy. Kara was finally making headway between the exercise at the DEO and her physical therapy.
"Come on Kara. You can do this. You've been through worse. I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere." Lena assured her friend as Kara pushed her body to move step by step using the bars as a brace. She hadn't left the Super's side in all these months. Kara hadn't made it easy either. Lena endured months of being sworn at, ridiculed, criticized, items thrown at her; but through it all she had stayed. She had moved heaven and earth to be by Kara's side. When Lena wasn't there Alex stepped in to help. When Alex couldn't be there Nia, Kelly, or Brainy came to help out. J'onn had spent three times a week working on stretching Kara's atrophied muscles by hands on moving and bending her legs. Kara was having to strengthen all those muscles again slowly. This was her second week working on standing and walking between parallel bars. On top of the physical therapy with a special selected DEO therapist Kara also had aqua therapy twice a week. Her hardest times, though, were seeing the psychologist. Lena and Alex had talked after Kara's attempt to kill herself. The Super was never left alone after that. Alex and Lena had bullied her into talking to her therapist. It had been excruciating hearing the depth of Kara's despair, but she was getting better. She had individual sessions and sessions with Lena and Alex. Though not at the same time. It was helping to settle a lot of the issues she had. On top of it, Lena had found a psychologist she could trust and was working on her issues separately too. Their friendship was getting stronger once more. There were still problems, but things were much better than they had been.
"Good job Kara!" Terrence applauded as the reporter reached the end. He helped her move to the floor to sit and stretch some. "Rest a few minutes and then we will start again." Kara was wiped already, but she knew they would go back and forth several more times. She wished her powers would kick back in fully. That was another issue. Her powers would pop in and pop out. When she said they would pop in and out she meant in and out. Thirty seconds here, sixty seconds there. And there was no idea which power would pop in as it were. Sometimes it was her hearing, sometimes her xray vision, and sometimes her strength. Never her speed or flight. Hopefully she would get them back fully soon.
"How are you feeling?" Lena asked as Terrence made some notes on Kara's chart. Kara looked up at Lena with some hesitance. Even after all these months and long talks Kara still was wary at times to share with Lena. She took a slow pull on the water bottle she had and nodded.
"Better, I'm having some pain at the base of my back. I think it's from the muscles though." Kara informed her friend. She saw the Luthor grimace and look toward Terrence. "No, it is okay. I"m just working hard building those muscles again. Probably need a good soak and a massage. You think I can get one?" Kara joked as she smiled looking sideways at Lena.
"I think that is a good possibility. It will have to be after we finish game night tonight. Remember, Eliza will be here too." Kara nodded as she leaned back on the mat on the floor. That had been another change. Lena had moved in with her not trusting her friend to be alone. Game nights had started up again. Kara couldn't hide. It would seem her friends and family had all gotten together and talked without her. They decided they weren't going to let her withdraw. So she was taken out shopping, picnics in the park, movie nights, and game nights. Lena had been the driving force. She closed her eyes for a minute only to have Terrence shake her awake.
"Hey, no napping on the job. Come on, we have several times more to go back and forth." Terrence pointed out. Kara sat up and Terrence helped her stand slowly. Another thirty minutes of therapy and Kara was done. She would have time to eat lunch and take a nap before everyone arrived for game night.
"What do you want for dinner tonight?" Lena asked Kara as they walked out to the car. Well, Kara rolled out to the car in the wheelchair while Lena walked. Thomas, Lena's driver, was waiting for them. Lena helped Kara maneuver into the back seat while Thomas placed the wheelchair into the trunk. Lena climbed in next to the reporter. That was another thing that had changed. Kara's boss Andrea Riojas had come by Kara's apartment and informed her she would still be working for CATCO. Kara's job description had changed a little as she was moved into an editorial position until such time as she could take up reporting again. When Kara had gone to protest Andrea had bullied and cajoled her into taking the position by talking about how she had contacted Cat Grant who had said the Kara Danvers never gave up. Kara had no other choice. She had watched as Andrea had spoken softly to Lena as she went to leave. Lena had argued back something. Andrea had nodded and placed her hand on Lena's cheek. Lena had removed it and let her out. Kara hadn't asked what it had been about. She expected Lena to leave her for Andrea or another person. After all, why should she stay. Kara knew she was a cripple.
"Whatever you want. Not really partial to anything right now. Just very tired." The Super responded while looking out the window. Yeah, Lena would leave her for Andrea. After all, Kara didn't have anything to offer anyone anymore.
"Come on Kara. You love eating. Tell me what you want." Lena asked again, worried now when Kara stared out the window without response. Kara still was overly depressed. Lena was truly frightened she was going to lose her friend. Even more, Lena knew she was falling in love with Kara. Lena decided to do something she hadn't done in months. She reached over and pulled Kara into a hug.
"Lena, Wha…" Before Kara could finish responding she was surrounded by Lena in a warm, calming hug. Kara sank into the hug as her tears began falling. Why couldn't they just leave her alone?
"You are not alone. Stop thinking I am going to leave you. I'm not going anywhere." Lena argued softly to her friend. Kara buried her head in Lena's neck. Lena let her have the time she needed. They arrived home. Lena helped Kara shower and change. Kara laid down on the couch for a nap before Game Night commenced. Kara never heard when Alex, Kelly and Eliza arrived as she was out cold napping. Eliza went over and sat on the edge of the couch. She ran her hands over her youngest daughter's face as Lena and Alex got food and drinks ready. Kara woke up to Eliza's smiling face.
"Hey there Sweetie. How are you doing?" Eliza asked softly even as Kara tried to shake off her tiredness.
"Good, I'm good. How are you?" Kara asked Eliza. She knew her last round of chemo was done for now. She worried terribly. She had asked Kal if he could check the medical database for anything that could help Eliza. So far he had found nothing.
"I'm fine baby. My cancer is shrinking. I'm a little tired, but it's going fine." Eliza explained to her daughter. But let's not talk about me. How is your therapy going?" Eliza was deeply worried about her daughter. The dark periods for her were becoming less and less, but it had shocked Eliza how bad it had gotten. It didn't help that Lex had made an attempt on Kara's life just four months back after figuring out that the Super had been injured badly. He would have killed her if it had not been for a special security device Lena had installed in the apartment. It basically created restraint zones and analyzed everything in the apartment. It could put up a forcefield in less than a second to contain a major blast. What Kara hated about it was that the AI installed within the program had prevented her second attempt by analyzing Kara's mood one day when Alex had stepped out for just fifteen minutes to grab a package down stairs. The AI had restrained Kara until Alex's arrival back. Once Alex returned, Kara had been released and her Psychologist had come to the apartment to talk with her. Interestingly, Lena has been alerted and bolted out of an LCorp board meeting with no apologies. When she had arrived at the apartment Kara had been crying in Alex's arms as the psychologist waited patiently for her to go on with her words. Lena and Alex had eventually moved to the kitchen while the therapist had spoken softly with Kara. Two hours later the therapist spoke to Alex and Lena as Kara went to sleep in the bedroom. Once more changes had been made to the schedule and medications changed for the Super.
"Therapy's going well. Both the physical and head." Kara said as she tapped her head. Kara looked for Lena and spotted her in the kitchen. Eliza noticed her daughter looked for the young Luthor a lot more than she used too. The Eldest Danvers believed that Kara had fallen back in love with Lena, but was terrified to admit it.
"Hey, how are you?" The sound of Nia and Brainy arriving broke Eliza out of her thoughts and brought her daughter more awake. Hours later, Kara's apartment was filled to the brim with people. Even Colonel Haley was there tonight. Kara was sitting in her wheelchair near the windows. She was tired tonight, but she watched as Lena played hostess alongside Alex. The group was playing Pictionary. Kelly, Alex and Haley had paired up. Lena, Nia, and Brainy were a team. J'onn, Eliza, and Kara were to be a team, but Kara had excused herself since she was distracted tonight. She had been watching Lena and falling into the old daydreams of how beautiful she was and how she moved with such grace. She shook her head and let it flop back in the chair. She closed her eyes giving into the exhaustion she felt and falling asleep. That' when it happened. The nightmare that had been waking her at least once a week. The white beam of energy hits her and she falls. She crater's in the park only to be approached by the alien haters and their bats encrusted with kryptonite. She's screaming as the bats stroke her body and words echo across the park and her memory…"roach...filthy alien...infecting the human race...cockroach...have to disguise yourselves...filthy aliens."
"No, No Stop. Please stop...Just stop. Please, you don't understand...stop." Kara screamed out even as Lena was there talking to her attempting to wake her from the nightmare.
"Kara, it's Lena. You aren't there anymore. Come on Kara. Come on. It's Lena. You're in your apartment with Alex and Eliza. It's game night. Come on Kara, come back to us." Lena kept up a steady, calm pace of words until the nightmare released her. She opened her eyes to see Lena in front of her Kelly next to her. "Kara, hey...hey come on. It's okay baby." Kara is breathing heavily, gasping and hiccuping every few minutes.
"Lena?" Kara questions as her breathing begins to settle down. She's now aware that there are others here.
"Hey, hey...no. Look at me. You have nothing to worry about. There are only people who love you here." Lena keeps reassuring Kara even as Kelly reassures Lena with a hand on her back. Kara looks up at her friends. Nia, clinging to Brainy, shocked by how bad Kara's dream was, She sees her mother and Alex's sympathetic faces. She sees J'onn anger at the injustice and Haley's shame for her part in the Super's pain. Lena and Kelly firmly and compassionately trying to help her. A hand on her face draws her eyes back to Lena's deep forest green Irises. "Stay with me. What do you need?" Lena's loving concern breaks through any embarrassment.
"Can I get a moment or two alone? Please?" Kara's words escaped through her ragged breaths. Lena nodded as she rose from where she knelt in front of Kara, grabbed a nearby blanket, and moved behind her. Kelly moved toward the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of water out of the refrigerator. Lena wheeled Kara toward the door and grabbed her sweater putting it on. "Go ahead and play some more. We will be back in just a bit." Kelly handed the bottle of water and slid one of Kara's anxiety pll bottles in her sweater pocket. Lena opened the door and headed out. They went to the elevator and got inside. Lena pushed the Roof button and typed in a number on the keypad. The elevator rrose to the roof and opened, letting both women out. Lena rolled Kara to the Western wall where she could see the ocean in the distance. She put the brakes on and covered her friend with a blanket. She pulled a small package of tissues out of her pocket which she always carried and handed one to Kara. Kara blew her nose several times and then sipped the bottle of water. Mainly, they just stood by each other.
"What was it?" Lena asked softly disrupting the quiet of their bubble. Kara took in a deep breath and shook her head trying to dislodge the last images. They never left her truly, but sometimes she could push them away to the edges of her mind.
"The day I was attacked with the power beam and then the park." Kara said as her voice rough with emotion and tears cracked. "You know I think I'm getting better and then something happens to rip it all away. I feel better in so many ways. Yet,..." Kara scrubbed at her face with the blanket and then held it there over her eyes for a few minutes. She began sobbing again only to feel Lena's arms wrap around her.
"Let it out Kara. It's not doing any good inside. I'm here. I haven't gone anywhere." Lena comforted Kara even as her friend fell apart, ragged pieces of pain and emotion falling off the Super.
"See and then there is you, Lena. You just don't get it. I'm damaged. I'm never going to be the person I was before. So I just don't understand why you are here." Kara cried out to her as she struggled to pull herself back together. Lena pulled back and framed Kara's face with her hands.
"Kara, I'm not going to lie to you. You are never going to be the same person you were before this. You are going to be someone so much stronger. So much greater." Lena decided it was time to tell Kara, even if she should tear her apart. She couldn't hold it back anymore. So Lena just said it praying to Rao and anyone who would listen that Kara heard her. "Someone I love so deeply." Kara stopped breathing for a moment, her head beginning to shake back and forth. "Yes, Kara. I love you. I will love you forever."
"How? You said...You told me…" Lena nodded acknowledging her shame.
"I was wrong. I was wrong Kara. I love you. Please, we've come so far. Let me love you." Lena's whispered plea reaching down into Kara's heart. Kara closed her eyes. She so badly wanted Lena. The fear was so strong. "Just let it go Kara. I promise I will be here and catch you. I promise. Forever Kara. I love you." Lena's words echoing down to her heart and soul. It was that easy and that hard. She just needed to let it go. She just needed to decide to trust Lena again. So she did. She let it go. Suddenly, she felt so light she became dizzy. "Kara?!"
"I do, Lena." Kara whispered, finally opening her eyes. Blue, like the ocean off a caribbean island, reflected back to Lena. "I do love you." Lena's puzzled face turned joyous in an instant. Kara leaned in and kissed Lena pulling the woman into the Super's arms. "I'm sorry. I'm soooo sorry." Kara whispered even as she fell into kiss after kiss with the beautiful brunette.
"Shh, no more apologies. No more. It's done. We move forward from here. All right?" Lena asked as Kara leaned her forehead against the CEO's. "We move forward together. We work together. We live together. We grow together. Always Together." Lena gasped as Kara held her tightly as if she would disappear.
"Yes, forever...together." Kara said even as she heard the scrape of feet and a soft sob behind them. Kara looked into Lena's eyes with assurance for the first time in a long time. "Forever Lena...I'm not giving up on you." Lena cried softly as she buried her head into Kara's shoulder. Behind her, Kara heard Alex, Eliza and Kelly crying softly and hugging each other. Kelly would call it a breakthrough. Alex would call it a battle won. Eliza would say Love overcame the impossible. Lena and Kara would always say it was a war for their souls and they had just finally figured out they could not live without each other. So they laid their weapons down and worked on knitting their souls back together. Because any other solution wasn't a solution for them.
Seven Months later...
"National City welcomes home Supergirl from over a year and half Deep Space Mission. The city has gone wild seeing the blue and red in the sky. Andrea Rojas, Maxwell Lord, and Lena Luthor along with the Mayor handed the key to the city over to the Girl of Steel.
"As you all know National City has been hit with a massive crime wave since the Girl of Steel was called away. Every crime human and alien could commit has gone down. Most not being solved. Federal, State, and Local resources have been stretched to the maximum and failing in most situations. It is with heartfelt relief we welcome Supergirl back to the city."
Supergirl hung in the sky, eyes closed and ears tuned to the horizon. Already today she had brought in several criminals and stopped two robberies in progress. The word was out she was back.
"Nerd1 to Supergirl." Kara smiled as the Catco helicopter took footage of her nearby.
"Go ahead Nerd1." Kara answered Lena's call on the comms. She could tell things were okay at home by Lena's steady and constant heartbeat.
"Supergirl, the hot bath is run, your potstickers have arrived, and the movies are cued up. Come home." Lena's sultry whisper resounded over the comms. Kara smiled wider. It was hard to believe that she had once wanted this all to end. Now, she felt renewed. She felt hope again. All it took was her family and friends' love. All it took was Lena.
"Nerd1, this is DEO Director Danvers. Would you please get off the comms?! Supergirl, go home. Your shift is done!" Her sister ordered through the comms. Kara laughed loudly doing a loop de loop.
"Yes, Director Danvers. Nerd1, I'm on my way home! I love you!" Kara said even as the air around her reverberated with her sudden acceleration. Kara smiled as seconds later she set down on the balcony. "There was nothing you couldn't get through as long as you were loved."
