Chapter 6
—FLASHBACK, YEARS AGO—
Like many times, one Raven Branwen sat in her tent and drinking a cup of tea but her thoughts were on the sound of someone approaching her tent and stopping outside.
"You may enter." Her eyes open slightly to show her red eyes that fixated on the opening to reveal one Yang who was about ten years old. Her outfit looks like the other bandits as rugged and ripped, having dirt on her face.
"You lied." It was with that statement, Raven turns and her eyes widen upon seeing a scroll that had a picture on it, one that wasn't supposed to be on it.
"One of the guys lost a bet and I won his scroll," Her eyes narrow. "that picture was on it, so explain."
What was shown was a younger Raven, sporting a smile as she was in a hand-to-hand fight with a blond-haired man, the same blond as her hair. The sight of that caused Raven to look away and swear.
"Imbeciles…" As she muttered that, her gaze returns to her daughter who didn't seem to be having any lies.
"You were patient, determined, and strong, what happened to that, who was and wasn't your father should be of no importance to you?" Her question gained a glare.
"What happened was you told me my father was a one-night stand, a fling with one of the bandits who perished later that year I was conceived." Her fingers crushed the scroll. "I've seen the news, it's pretty obvious a year after this picture was taken I was born. My father was the Hero." Not even bothering to wait for a reply, she turns her back to Raven.
"Where do you think you're going?"
"Where do you think?!"
The older Branwen simply sighs and looks at her daughter who looks back at the entrance of the tent.
"Trust me, it's a foolish idea." She turns back and sips her tea, angering the girl who turns towards her.
"And why is that, why can't I see my father?!" Her demand was met with Raven's same old gaze.
(Because he doesn't want you.)
—DREAM/FLASHBACK END—
A pair of red eyes shot open before even the sun was up, still, night out as the girl rose from her bed with the only light being from outside. The Branwen, now in a bad mood sat on the side of her bed, her gaze shifting over towards the sleeping form of Ruby, and innocent look causing her to glare at the girl before with a grit of her teeth she breaks it and silently gets out of bed where she got dressed in just her training shorts and a sleeved shirt, followed by tying her hair in a ponytail so it won't get in the way of her jog.
In a matter of minutes, she was already outside and jogging by herself with the sun having yet come up but she didn't care as she jogged despite it being against the curfew, she didn't care.
"A month has gone by with me being stuck with that girl."
(Yang, c-can we train!)
"She just doesn't get the hint or shut up."
(Yang, let's do a team-building expert—)
"She's like a broken record, not getting the hint I don't want to deal with her." Her thoughts just stick with Ruby just annoying her in wanting to get along more and the fact she is always trying. It starts to make her mood worse until she stops mid-jog, her eyes widening to find one Adam walking towards her but also stops when he sees her, the redhead being surprised at seeing her out so early that the sun hasn't appeared yet.
"For someone late to class a lot, I didn't take you for a morning person." He said to the girl who smiles and does a spin, flaunting her noticeable, tight clothing that showed off her body.
"So you ditched your side-girl to come to find me, huh." Adam just sighs as he felt like pinching the bridge of his nose while the girl approached him, arms behind her back to make an 'area' more noticeable.
"It's called needing to use the 'restroom' Yang. Besides, did something happen for you to be up this—" He stops to see the annoyed look appear on her face as she looks away and approaches a wall to lean against it.
"Can't sleep and not in the mood to talk."
"Weren't you the one to approach me?"
This seemed to hit a sort of nail as she turns to glare at him, being correct in that assumption.
"You may be a Huntsman." She points directly at him. "But it won't stop me from knocking your ass out if you don't learn to shut your mouth." Her words merely gained an annoyed look at how highly she thought of herself.
"Careful Branwen, you may end up in a hospital bed again." This seemed to anger her as she glared at Adam, her hands turning to fists as her hair become alit yet Adam just stared at her seriously with his one hand on his sword hilt try in the end, Yang turns around in anger.
"Nice, you just lucked out with me. I have better things to do than talk to you." With that said, she begins jogging away with Adam just moving his head to stare at the sky despite the Sun beginning to peak from the horizon it was still dark out.
As the usual classes go, Yang sat in her seat, bored. They were in the training room where she witnesses one Winchester beating down a disgraceful Arc who wasn't putting up much of a fight against the smug-looking student.
"This is the part where you lose."
"Over my dead—!"
The silence was earned from a kick to the gut, leaving the Arc to fall with the sight of a colorful shimmer from
Jaune appearing for a couple of seconds. With this, Cardin raises his mace and is about to slam it down on a worried Jaune when he was stopped by a shout.
"BOOORING!" The two look at the annoyed Yang who got a sigh from Blake and Weiss while Ruby was shocked and looked towards the ruffling mustache of Peter Port who stared at them before he pressed a buzzer that ended a fight.
"Ms. Branwen, I know this fight is nothing compared to the countless duals I've faced but please refrain from saying it." His words seemed to offend the two students with Yang smirking, seeing he was on the verge of giving her whole team Detention.
"My dear students, as you can see, Mr. Arc's Aura has now dropped into the red~~" Yang just zoned her out, resting her feet on the lower stands seats below her own with hardly a care.
"~~Those who choose to compete in the combat tournament will be representing all of Vale!" Was the last part she heard just as the bell rings loudly, gaining their attention as Yang was the first to stand up, tuning out the boring lecture they were given and not even paying Peter's ruffling mustache any mind at all.
With it being lunchtime, they were gathered in the cafeteria as a group. Due to the simple fact Pyrrha flight with Ruby's team against the enemy soldiers they had joined them for lunch at a single table.
"So! There we were, in the middle of the night..."
"It was the day." Yang just stared in wonder at wtf kind of story the orange-haired girl, Nora was telling her next to Blake who had her eyes on one of her books once again to keep to herself while Ruby was different as she was amazed by the storytelling.
"We were surrounded by Ursa..."
"They were Beowolves."
The silent and reserved one that kept cutting in was Jaune's version of Blake but not as silent for he was correcting his teammate and child good friend.
"Dozens of them!" She stood up abruptly, making more of an impact on her story that Ruby couldn't stop listening while Yang tried understanding. Weiss simply listened to her music and ate quietly, seated on Blake's right.
"Two of 'em."
"But they were no match... And in the end, Ren and I took them down and made a boatload of Lien selling Ursa skin rugs!"
"She's been having this recurring dream for nearly a month now ever since we came here." Muttered the guy who appeared to be on the verge of slamming his tray into his face.
"Jaune? Are you okay?" Pyrrha broke the ice with the leader who was playing with his food, snapping him out of it.
"Huh? Oh, yeah! Why?"
"It's just that you seem a little... not okay..." Ruby added but before Jaune spoke up, Yang did first.
"Ever since you got your sorry ass handed to yourself, you've been acting like a wimp on the verge of crying." And like that, Pyrrha gave the blonde a heated glare for the uncalled for comment, some from Nora, a taken aback from Ren while Weiss sighs, Blake sharing an annoyed look and Ruby looking worriedly.
"Yang, could you not?" Pyrrha asks the girl who shrugs, not caring what the others thought.
"I say how I see it, and he's a wimp." Jaune found himself looking at his feet. "Hard to believe he even got into this Academy, I wouldn't put it past him forging his documents." Her question earned a reaction as Pyrrha stood up, towering over Yang.
"I will not just allow you to insult my leader like that, Branwen." Her words got their reaction as the Branwen stood up, appearing to be ready for a fistfight.
"Then do please stop me but it's not like I'm saying he's the biggest wimp in the school." She motions towards another table and with it, a loud bang was heard. "That spot belongs to that coward." With that said, they had all turned to look at the members of Team CRDL, standing in front of one brown-haired rabbit Faunus being protected/stood in a froth of by Oscar, Coco, and the same student that tripped Weiss with the reptilian tail. It appeared to be a staredown with Cardin's team, in the end, walking away, walking away from Team CVOS (Chivalrous). The reptilian Faunus was about to do 'something' when Oscar grabbed his shoulder and shook his head, stopping him while Coco said something.
"She's been nothing but a punching bag, doing shit to stop the bullying." Her gaze returns to Jaune. "How about walking over to Cardin and his team so you can knock his ass out, if you do that, I'll change my opinion of you." Yet Pyrrha spoke up in disagreement.
"Jaune, don't listen to her and besides, Cardin's been picking on you since the first week of school, he's always been targeting you!" She tries to assure, to let him know things just don't happen to him.
"Who? Cardin Winchester? Nah... He just likes to mess around! You know, practical jokes!" At that point, they were all looking at him. L
"He's a bully."
"He's a racist."
"He's a boorish imbecile."
"Oh, please!" Jaune scoffs. "Name one time he's 'bullied' me." Instead, they just stared at Jaune who felt awkward under their gazes.
"Ah, come on!" His teammate once again spoke up.
"Jaune, you know if you ever need help, you can just ask." Pyrrha was offered to her leader along with the breaking of legs by Nora.
"Guys it's fine! Besides, it's not like he's only a jerk to me; he's a jerk—" He stops to see they were all staring at him which he shuts up while Coco and Oscar went to sit down, the reptilian of the group looks at Velvet.
"T-Thank—" Velvet was cut off by the fellow Faunus whose gaze rested on her.
"You are training to be a Huntress and allowing yourself to be treated like nothing but an animal, you're a disagree to our people." His words struck a chord and she was about to argue but the words got stuck in her throat, only able to look down with her ears falling to their sides, ignoring Coco and Oscar getting involved as he just walks away from the table and his team in general. His words appeared to bother a few with Yang speaking up.
"He's not wrong, tho I would have given her more 'reality-checking words. If she keeps acting so submissive, what's she gonna do when some guy tries to take advantage of her?" Her words gained an annoyed look from Pyrrha, Ruby, Nora, and Weiss.
"Your point isn't exactly wrong…" Muttered Ren, surprising the others before Blake spoke up.
"I wouldn't put those words through my mouth but the point you made isn't wrong." Her gaze falls to her book. "If we do nothing and allow ourselves to be treated like that when we could do something…it's disgraceful." Pyrrha was surprised by that but turns to look at Velvet who stared at her feet, not paying much attention to Coco talking to her.
"I wish things weren't this bad in school." Pyrrha's words gained Weiss's attention as she spoke up after placing her fork down.
"It was worse when it came to the many things in the SDC have done." Muttered the Heiress who caused Pyrrha to look away as she too has heard the atrocious things they've done when they were exposed. Blake just stared at Weiss while feeling her still bandaged ear, itch.
History Class was filled with only first-year teams in it, CRDL, CVOS, JNPR, RWBY, and a couple of others. They were being given a long lecture by their Professor, Bartholomew Oobleck who went into Faunus History that gained especially close attention by one Velvet Scarlatina who has sat away from one Cardin Winchester that seemed annoyed.
"Ah yes, before the Faunus Rights Revolution, more popularly known as the Faunus War, humankind was quite, quite adamant about centralizing Faunus population in Menagerie." The speedy Doc points at the map of the said area with his ruler. "Now! While this must feel like ancient history to many of you, it is imperative to remember that these are relatively recent events! Why the repercussions of the uprising can still be seen to this day! Now! Have any among you been subjugated or discriminated against because of your Faunus heritage?" His question instantly got an answer even if it was slow as a few raised their hands, one being Velvet's teammate yet Velvet didn't as she shifted her gaze away from Cardin who was eyeing her and smiling. This sight annoying Blake who saw this choice of action and it didn't go unnoticed by Oobleck either nor Velvet's teammates.
"Indeed a dreadful thing, simply dreadful! Remember, it is precisely this kind of ignorance that breeds violence! Take the White Fang for example that formed after the Faunus Revolution with their main focus being on equality yet even so with the stepping down of one leader, another took charge and have been taking a stronger stand towards injustice." As he spoke, he could see it didn't seem to interest some, including Cardin which got the man thinking.
"Now, how about we discuss the greatest figurehead of Faunus kind." It was that that got the attention of many students with Velvet and Blake's eyes widening which Oobleck liked to see the drawing of their gazes as he leaned against his desk.
"You see students, this information isn't exactly taught in the other Kingdoms but Mistral, one could say it is their greatest history and in turn the Faunus's greatest leader!" His gaze moves the map and points at Mistral.
"I am, of course, referring to the one who unified Mistral during the era when it was but split up into large factions trying to claim control over Mistral, having fought in said Wars as not only a Master Strategist but also as a leader to his men. The one who opened doors for all Faunus that ended slavery in Mistral before any other and caused the other Kingdoms to follow suit soon after. I am referring to none other than the First and Last Emperor of Mistral; Emperor Qing Huang who was also known as the Heavenly Dragon. He was born as a slave and rose to take the throne as an Emperor of a nation." This seemed to gain many shocked looks, mostly from the Faunus with Oscar appearing to have an uncomfortable expression as if having a sad memory.
"For the next few weeks, we will be going over the life of the Emperor and the effects he had on the world as we know it and what it was like before his Rule." As he spoke, he finally took a sip of his coffee while his thoughts lay on the history of the greatest Faunus of all time. It was with this the bell rang, gaining his attention as the students started standing up to leave except for one, Velvet who didn't leave which gained the attention of the others. Cardin becoming annoyed yet left while Coco just ushers the two teammates out of the room which left her by herself with Oobleck who took a sip of his coffee.
"Ms. Scarlatina, do you perhaps have something to tell me regarding what I've told you all?" He puts his cup down with the girl appearing to be in thought on what to say.
"Remember, what you tell me will stay confidential unless you wish for—" He was cut off by a question he didn't expect to hear.
"How did the Emperor's Dynasty fall?" This just surprised the teacher who was hoping to hear something else but he sighed and turned towards the map.
"It isn't exactly known but only rumors spread of what transpired, some being he died of an illness while others being messier." Oobleck frowns. "In the end, there was but a single book that recorded his life and may shed light on what happened yet it was lost with the fall…all we know is that with his death came the fall of his Rule soon after, wars breaking out all over…as if his life was what held it together. It was with this that Vale and Atlas came to quell the fighting…" The teacher appeared to be bothered by his own words yet turns to her with a smile.
"What draws your attention to him so much?" His question has surprised her which she appeared a little nervous.
"My mom told me stories about him, how he never stood by after witnessing injustice while he was a Slave, how he put his own life on the line many times for his comrades in the War. He reminds me a lot of the Hero, my role model…" Oobleck was surprised yet thought about it and started to smile before taking a sip of his coffee.
"You are not wrong, Ms. Scarlatina yet why do you ask?"
"Why isn't he taught about in the other academies but Mistral?" The question for the teacher to look down at his cup, seeing his reflection ripple with the tiniest of movements.
"You could say that if someone rises then another would fall. Despite being viewed as the greatest figurehead of Faunus, he was viewed more like a tyrant by the other Kingdoms for his most notable wish to unify Remnant, to destroy the borders that separated us all, and bring us together as a single, unified world. This resulted in Wars with the other Kingdom to impose their rule of ridding Slavery from the Kingdoms. Such actions were viewed more evil rather than the reason for it being Nobel and in the end, his death brought it all to an end." He took a sip of his coffee with Velvet looking down at her feet.
"How do you think he died?" Velvet's question caused the teacher to turn his back to her to stare at the map.
"There are many rumors and many stories that dictate what was thought to happen. Like before, passing from an illness but for others more brutal such as being poisoned, a coup d'état that ended his life, or a friend he trusted more than anyone else having stabbed him in the back. In the end, we do not truly know what could have happened with the diary being the only clue we have in knowing." With that said, he looks at Velvet.
"Do you have anything else you wish to talk about?" His question had surprised her yet she looks away uncomfortably.
"N-No, I'm fine…" She turns her back to him. "Thank you for your time, Mr. Oobleck." With that, she makes her way towards the door to leave with the teacher himself frowning at her not asking him for help about the bullying yet leaves it be for it was her choice.
