So, you will all be aware that this outtake was meant to be Eric's POV but I lost the original version I had of it… Eric's outtake will still happen and will be posted sometime after this one. Though the idea for Kayden's outtake was inspired by an idea I had to solve a plot hole created by a plot twist that's going to happen soon…
Kayden's POV
Kayden exhales deeply as he opens his eyes to a room that isn't his. A soft smile soon makes its way onto his face as his gaze focuses on Flare, who was using his arm as a pillow. Her hands tighten around his bicep subconsciously and Kayden lifted a strand of her fiery hair out of her face with his free hand.
As Lottie, Head Leader of all Fence Operations, have given him a few months off for his leg to heal, Kaden had joined Flare and her parents for every Saturday night and Sunday day. Saturday nights were normally spent going out for dinner in the restaurants in the Pit or spent at Flare's childhood home for movie nights. Sundays were spent with a late breakfast – or brunch by that point – and the rest of the day is spent lounging around doing paperwork or seeing to anything work-related that needs their attention while still keeping the day lax.
Kayden shifted slightly but his leg seized, and he yelled out. He clenched his eyes shut, his hand moving down to grip his knee as it burned. The pain blanketed his senses, and in his daze, he didn't realise that the cover had been thrown off them both. Careful and delicate hands massaged along his knee and calf until the pained started to ebb away. Kayden's eyes slowly opened to see Flare leaning above him, worry filling her eyes.
"Hey." Kayden croaked, trying to smile and lighten the situation.
"Kayden," Flare sighed. "You said it was getting better."
He shrugged, flinching slightly as a shot of pain went through his leg. "It is. It just likes surprising me now and then."
"Kay…"
Kayden held up his hands in false surrender. "I know, I should probably go to the infirmary to get it checked but last time something like this happened, Vex said that it's probably just the nerves reamending themselves. There's nothing they can do about it."
Flare sat back on her heels, trying to glare at him as he laid on his back. Kayden winked at her, knowing that she wouldn't be able to stay angry at him long. For the added effect, he sent her a roguish grin. Kayden could see the corner of her lip twitching up like she was fighting off the smile. Flare pushed at his chest with a stern expression that she was failing to keep on her face. "Well, if it gets worse, I'm telling mum and she can help me sort you out."
Kayden smiled at the weak threat. Bella would just tell him to take a long soak in the bath. Slowly, he pulled Flare to sit on his lap. "I love you."
She leaned down, holding onto his shoulders as her lips hovered over his. "I love you too."

An hour later Kayden had pulled on a pair of joggers and a hoodie, and denied all fact that Flare had to help him get dressed because he couldn't stand on his leg. Flare followed him as he limped down the stairs with an arm braced against the wall to support himself. Kayden could feel Flare's hand hovering below his elbow, and he tried to shake away the feeling to push her away.
They walked into the kitchen dinner together where Ari, Flare's father, sits at the head of the table with a cup of coffee and the city's newspaper laid in front of him. Ari glanced up before taking a second glance as Kayden hobbled in. "You okay there lad?" Kayden nodded at him as Bella turned around from the stove to analyse him. "We heard you yell out; is you're leg still bothering you?"
Kayden nodded again, gritting his teeth together as he walked towards the kitchen area and pulled out two mugs for him and Flare. He didn't want to admit it, to Flare and her family, the whole group or even to himself that his leg was a pain in the ass most days and even worse some mornings. He most definitely didn't want to admit it out loud just in case he was forced out of the Faction because of his…disability…
While Kayden busied about making his morning coffee and Flare's tea, he missed the look shared between Ari, Bella and Flare. Behind his back, Flare wore an expression of distress while Bella seemed calm, and Ari seemed second his wife's expression. When Kayden turned back around, the expressions disappeared. He came over and placed one of the mugs in front of Flare before sitting down on Ari's left. Bella placed a hand on Kayden's should when she leaned over to place a rack of toast on the table. There were already jars of jam and such on the table.
"Bacon will just be on the way. Flare, can you help me with the sausages? Your dad prefers how you do it, but I just can't seem to get the hang of it."
"Sure mum." Flare gets up with a quick smile in Kayden's direction before she moves over to the worktops, taking her mum through each step.
There's silence for a few moments on the table as Kayden reaches for a slice of toast and the jam. After a moment, Ari clears his throat as he puts the newspaper down.
"Kayden its okay to admit that you're in pain." Ari's eyes softened as he looked at Kayden. "You're not being weak by admitting you need to stop. Only the strongest can say that they aren't strong all the time."
Kayden kept his gaze on the table, shaking his head. "I can't, I –"
"Kayden," Ari places his hand on his arm. "You're not going to leave this faction. Why, I know several people with limps and even amputees still in this faction, working away in offices and along the fence. Just because you have a limp doesn't mean you're no longer Dauntless. You still fight for what's right lad, but fighting isn't always running in with guns firing and punching people. It's keeping an eye on the city in the control rooms so that squadrons can be called out to where Dauntless are needed like what your friend Cody does. It's making sure soldiers are fed and dressed and supplied with weapons like what Noah and Alec do." Ari grips his arm tighter, frowning slightly. "It's okay to let your walls down and show pain. We're family Kayden. We won't judge you or throw you out."
Tears sting at Kayden's eyes and he lifts his other hand up to wipe them away. Mutely, Kayden nods.
"Yeah?"
Kayden smiles weakly as tears fall down his face and his voice breaks. "Yeah."
Ari smiles before standing up. "C'mon, up you get."
"What?"
"Up you get." Ari holds out his arms.
Kayden stares at him for a minute, fully aware that the kitchen has gone completely silent. The act seems completely foreign to him… Kayden's own father never hugged him, despite being Amity. He'd clap Callie on the arm or throw his arm across his shoulder but with Kayden, he would pat him on the head reluctantly like some dog. It wasn't the best kept secret that he loved Callie more than Kayden… Though it was also well known that his parents wanted a daughter but instead they got Kayden. He wasn't neglected as such as all Amities looked out for the children of the Faction – though this was before Callie transferred out. His parents seemed to tolerate him better when Adele was born. He stands up slowly, still unsure but walks into Flare's father's arms. Ari wraps his arms around him, even as Kayden stands stiffly. It's a moment before Kayden relaxes and wraps his own arms around the older man, his eyes closing as he hears a sniffle coming from the kitchen area.

It's a few days after the second game of Manic when Kayden jumps onto the train with Bella and Flare in tow. The women are chatting about dresses and god knows what but Kayden smiles as he leans against the wall. He knows for a fact that if he sit down, he won't be able to get back up. Flare's eyes twinkle in his direction, silently laughing at him. In response Kayden sticks his tongue out at her and Flare laughs.
Today, he and Flare had planned to go meet Adele at their spot on the borders of Amity as Flare had been busy with prep for next year's initiation and the final training of being a hair dresser. Kayden himself had still been on leave as his leg healed. Though Bella joined them after realising the couple hadn't thought how to get passed the guards on the fence. It was a couple of months since Kayden had last met with Adele and Bella had been keeping up with the schedule they had originally set. Flare though had yet to meet his sister, and Kayden could tell that Flare was getting nervous the closer the train got to the fence.
"It's gonna be okay," Kayden smiled down at Flare as she picked at the ends of her fiery hair. Her reaction was honestly adorable. "Adele's gonna love you."
Flare shot him a small smile. "If you're sure?"
"I'm more than sure. There's no reason why she wouldn't love the woman who loves me for me, flaws and all." Kayden grinned. "Plus, your mum can back me up, Adele's awestruck by you already."
"He's not kidding hun." Bella replies when Flare turns to her in confusion. "We've told her stories of Dauntless while training and you, Lilah and Issy seem to pop up most."
"Mostly from initiation." Kayden winks as he walks to the doors and leans out. "You guys coming or what?" Kayden laughs as he leaps out before either can respond but he hears Flare's curses through the wind.
Kayden squints at the fence, watching soldiers walk around their posts. He notices that even though he enjoyed training his sister during breaks, Kayden doesn't miss working on the fence itself. Maybe because at the time of choosing his career, not only was it the only choice he had but he hadn't let go of his past. Though now Kayden finds that he's finally let go of the guilt he felt from Adele's accident, its not for him anymore.
An arm wrapped around his waist and Kayden smiled, pressing a kiss to Flare's temple as the three of them began to walk towards the gate. Bella got them through easily enough as none of the soldiers wanted to disobey their superior. It nearly had Kayden and Flare laughing at how the soldiers around the gate straightened up so quickly, they could hear the bones snapping into place.
For some stupid reason, the sun always seemed brighter and warmer in Amity – strange, Kayden's aware but this was the first time the sun held the slightest bit of heat. The new year was crisp but, in the wind, he could feel the promise of spring. He was sure that was the old Amity in him…
Walking towards a large cluster of trees Kayden felt Flare's hand tighten around his own. He smiled down at her, finding her nerves adorable. As they got closer to the usual area Kayden and Bella met Adele, they could hear something being slammed into wood and he shared a concerned look with Bella. When the trio broke into a small field that resides in the trees, they immediately spot Adele.
"If you throw that hard, you won't be able to get the knife back out of the bark!" Kayden called out, grinning when his sister turned around sharply, knife in her hands.
Adele's expression immediately lighten up. "KAYDEN!" She began to run at him, and Kayden let go of Flare's hand to catch his sister, spinning her around as their laughed. He put her down only for her to barrel into Bella's outstretched arms.
Kayden turns back to Flare, who watches them quietly, and holds his hand out to her. After a moment Flare takes it and he pulls her closer. "Adele? I'd like you to finally meet my girlfriend Flare." Kayden pushes Flare in front of him and steps back a little. Adele just turns to stare at Flare. They stare at each other for a while and Kayden wonders what each of them sees in the other. Within another moment Adele has her arms wrapped around Flare and whispers something into Flare's ear. Whatever it was had tears welling up in Flare's eyes when they finally pulled away.
"It's so good to finally meet you!" Adele grins at her, pulling Flare over to the makeshift target marked on the tree truck. "At last, some professional advice!" His little sister shot Kayden and Bella a cheeky look. "Don't get me wrong, your mum and Kay are great but you're the instructor."
Flare leaned closer with a mischievous grin. "And I ranked higher." She said in a scheming whisper and Adele laughed brightly. "C'mon, get into stance and throw a knife." Adele did as Flare said and Flare moved Adele's hips to an angle. "You're standing wrong, that's why the knives aren't going where you want them to." Flare shot him and Bella an unimpressed look, which was ruined by the grin that she couldn't keep off her face. "And this is why I'm the instructor."
As Flare began to go throw different ways for Adele to get better, Bella leaned closer to Kayden.
"I bet you cant wait until Adele meets the rest of the girls."
Kayden knew she was referring to Lilah, Issy and Bree, and the mere thought of that much crazy, mischievous attitude just throw together made him grimace. "Thankfully, I have a few years before that happens…"
Bella laughs, knocking her shoulder with his.

Kayden frowned as he walked up to the Leadership offices. That morning while he was getting dressed for another uneventful weekday, Kayden had received a message from Lottie requesting a meeting at ten a.m. in her office. At first, he was confused at why the Leader of his department would want to meet with him but after a moment he assumed that he was being put back onto the rotations for work.
However, now he was walking towards the offices, Kayden was getting more and more confused… Surely if it was about getting put back onto the fence, he'd get a message with his new rota and leave it at that? Why would a Leader request to personally meet with him just to hand him a rota? It just made no sense… While he tried to think of reasons behind this meeting, fear began to flood through his mind. Kayden swallowed heavily, trying to ignore his fear of being kicked out of the Faction, out of his home.
When Kayden stood outside of Lottie's door, he hesitated. Fear clawed against his insides, but Kayden pushed it away and knocked before fear got the better of him.
"Come in!"
Kayden pushed the door open and was greeted by the sight of Lottie sitting behind the desk but with Max and her trainee, Liam, flanking her sides. Slowly he shut the door behind him and sat down in the chair in front of the desk.
"Hello Kayden," Lottie smiles and she instantly reminds him of his late grandma who died when he was five. He doesn't have a lot of memories of her, but the reassuring smile is the same, as is the whole vibe he's getting from her. "We haven't met before but as you will be aware of, I'm Lottie, and this is Liam, who's training to take over my department." Liam nods in his direction and Kayden nods back. "How are you today Kayden?" Lottie smiles again and for some reason, it puts him on edge.
"I'm –" Kayden eyes Max for a second before looking back to Lottie. "– fine…"
Max frowns at Kayden's response. "What's the matter?"
Kayden glances from Max to Lottie to Liam and back again. "…Are you kicking me out of the Faction because I have a limp?" He blurts out without thinking.
There's a few seconds of silence before Max bursts out laughing, causing the shocked expression to fall from Lottie's face and she hits Max in the shoulder with the back of her hand. "No, we're not kicking you out of the Faction for having a limp."
"I'd damn hope not." Lottie sets her stern gaze on Max. "It would be a waste of untapped potential and you know it!" Kayden arcs an eyebrow and wonders if its some kind of joke. Lottie's eyes soften at the expression on Kayden's face. "I've been reading over reports from Bella about your work ethic while on the fence and while it was your shift partner's job to do the reports each shift; you were the one to fill them out."
Kayden didn't really know what to say. He didn't want to pull his assigned partner up from being lazy on the job but there wasn't another reason as to why Kayden was doing the reports instead. "Um, the guy that I was partnered with had a template of a report." When Lottie raised an eyebrow and shared a look with Liam, he carried on. "Each shift he'd look back on a previous report and copy and paste relevant information onto the new report before handing it in."
"Interesting…" The expression that flashed across Lottie's face said anything but. She turned to Liam. "After this meeting, can you look into the reports sent from the fence at the time slots of when Kayden would have been working and see if you can find who this is?"
Liam nodded, jotting it down in a notebook. "Shall I also filter through a batch of reports to see if anyone else had the same idea?"
"That would be a good idea. Now Kayden, that didn't give us the reason as to why you started filling out the reports instead."
Kayden swallowed nervously. "I, uh, I tried asking the officer on my shift if they could change the responsibility of the reports over to me but because I was only a month into working at the fence, I kind of got told no?"
"Kind of?" Max asks with a frown.
"I got told to fuck off and watch my back. He said that the new initiation class didn't know their place yet and that I needed to keep my mouth shut about shit that I don't understand."
Max's frown deepens and he pulls out a pen and pad. "And the officer's name was?"
"O'Neil, I think."
"Of course, its O'Neil…" Liam sighs and turns to his trainer. "I'll email him to attend a meeting about his actions. His options, depending on his attitude regarding this situation, will either be sending him to Sector C of the fence on lockdown for a few months or stripping of his rank and placing him at the bottom of one of the other departments."
Both Max and Lottie seem proud at Liam's decision and Kayden nearly laughs as Lottie pats Liam's head, making the Leader-in-training blush.
"Carry on Kayden."
"Um, well," Kayden scratched the back of his neck. "I may or may not have hacked into his system and changed the responsibility over to me. The next day, I think he must have thought I went to one of the higher-ups and got approval for the change."
"Excellent, though unorthodox, work."
The statement nearly had Kayden falling from his chair. "I beg your pardon?"
Lottie flicks through the pile of papers on her desk. "While we don't offer classes on what to include on a shift report, there are – or should be – several signs around the barracks that say what to include. Your reports matched everyone of those point and even added ways the shifts could be more efficient. In Bella's reports, she also tells me that you walk around the barracks and help anyone struggling with their own reports. In your free time, you help soldiers at the gate when trucks come and go even when you're not needed, and if the cooks there tell you anyone hasn't picked up their lunch, you'll go and take it to them. I have several reports from other soldiers saying that what you do to help them, makes the barracks feel more like the compound, more like a home." She smiles sadly at him. "Now if the medical reports from Vex said anything about your limp healing fully, I would have you start training as Barracks Corporal –" Kayden stops breathing. That would make him Bella's superior… The thought alone makes him feel sick. "– But with your injury, I'd rather not risk it. However, Max and I have been talking and since you have the required skill set, we'd like to offer you a job as a Report Checker for the fence and the barracks next to the gate."
Kayden opens his mouth, but nothing comes out.
Max grins. "A Report Checker does what it says on the tin. You'll have reports on shifts on the sectors by the gate, reports from the barracks, how many Amity trucks have passed through each month. You'll be given the supply reports of what food, medication, weapons etc. are being sent to that part of the fence and get the report from the barracks at what supplies have been delivered. If the two corresponding reports aren't matching, it'll be your job to find out why and solve the problem until the reports match."
"Uh…"
Liam grins too. "You'll have an office on the floor below the Leadership floor and will be surrounded by other Checkers for different parts of the fence, who can help you with anything you're struggling with. There's also several other Checkers from different departments, so if a report of supplies doesn't match you can ask one of them to help."
"Any questions?" Lottie asks. All three of them are deeply amused by Kayden's lack of voice.
"Um, no?"
"Do you want to take the position?"
Kayden just blinks before he nods silently.
"Wow." Max stares at Kayden. "You really did think we were going to kick you out, weren't you?" Kayden nods more firmly and Max snorts, earning him another smack from Lottie. "We'll send you the details later on today for your start on Monday. Dismissed."
For the third time, Kayden just nods as he stands up and walks towards the door. He pauses, smiling at them before leaving the room. He got halfway down the corridor towards the lifts when Flare shouted his name. Kayden turned to see her and Lilah coming out of her office, jogging to meet him.
"What happened?" Flare asked desperately. "Mum said you were having a meeting with Lottie and Liam, but Max was attending also."
In his shocked daze, Kayden looks between them. "I just got promoted."
