Okay...here's the next chapter. Sorry, it's been small. Anyways, enjoy! :D
For some, it was a pasturage where they could roam freely. For some, it was a place of entertainment, beauty and knowledge. Known as the royal bird park of Japan, it was a piece of living art. Making nests of hays and dry leaves which were hanging like chandelier from emerald trees, baya weavers were feeding their young. Sitting on the leaf-embellished twigs of mangoes, nightingales were practicing their music lessons of that dawn. With the rhythm, woodpeckers were beating drums by kissing the woods. Spreading their flamboyant tails, the peacocks were doing ballet. Swans and geese joined them, pink flamingos dipped their beaks and tugged them with fishes. Sometimes, kingfishers dove in the crystal clear lakes, demanding their share with utmost pride.
Two young girls entered the place as the guards at the gate saluted. Greeting them cordially, the lasses trudged inside. Seeing them, the magpie robins crooned the welcome tunes. The width of the peacock-tails increased. Immediately recognizing the fish-lover, the flamingos flew away in another direction as the fishes sighed in relief for a few moments. The elder girl rolled her eyes at the hunters while the younger was giggling. The morning walk was surely amusing and good for health at the same time.
"This is the royal bird park of Japan, Charlotte," The royal blue-haired girl guided, "Birds of different categories are present here."
"It's really beautiful, Mariam!" The brunette, "It's...it's not a land of the earth. I think...as if someone placed a piece of heaven here!"
"You're not wrong, dear," Mariam leered, "It's a treasury for all the nature-lovers of Japan. You know, in our childhood, we all used to come here a lot for feeding the birds and listening to their songs."
"Why not now, Mariam?"
"We've been busy lately, Charlotte," The Japanese girl sighed, "Don't know how and when these twelve years have passed. Now, my friend for whom I was ready to leave the royalty is getting married within less than two weeks. Her in-laws are coming to Japan. For welcoming them, she's been so busy that she forgot to visit this place. Already, responsibilities have started binding her, Charlotte."
"Don't be sad, Mariam," The young girl patted her shoulder, "Sister Hilary still loves us all. She is still our friend. When she'll be free of all her chores, we'll bring her here so that you all can cherish your beautiful childhood memories."
"I don't know when that moment will come," Mariam snickered, "Anyways, let's go to that direction. You know, talking birds live there. They can have conversations with us. Some of them are expert in singing and reciting poems also."
"Really?" Her blue orbs flickered in excitement, "Then what are we waiting for? Let's go!"
Reaching a flowering dogwood, they stopped. On its roots, there was a sheet of white flowers. They were showering on the girls from the branches too. On different twigs, colorful birds were sitting, observing the area. Raising her head, Mariam pointed at a bottle-green one, "He's very intelligent, Charlotte. Let's talk to him."
Clearing her throat, the royal blue-haired girl voiced to the parrot, "Mojo, tell something about me, please."
It was unknown whether the parrot had opened its mouth or not but the girls could hear someone's pitch:
"Mariam, Mariam, you're a witch,
Like an old donkey, you do screech."
The jaw of the older girl dropped as the younger covered her mouth in order to control laughter. Not looking at her, the blunette gawked at the parrot. Rolling her eyes, she chided, "Hey! I told you to praise me, not to badmouth me in front of a little girl!"
"Praise I would if you were good,
Get changed, soon, at least you should."
"What the hell!" Mariam frowned, "Why is this bird behaving so strange with me? Till yesterday, he was doing fine. What happened to it suddenly?"
"Your bird is completely okay, Mariam," Charlotte aimed at a bush, hiding her smile, "Actually, the words for you were being produced from there."
Knitting her brows, the blunette looked at the shrubbery. Behind it, a mass of blonde hair could be seen. The owner of the hair was kneeling down so that nobody could recognize him. However, his effort went in vain. Why not? After all, the shark-woman knew every single detail of him. To identify him was not a difficult job for her at all.
"Max!" She voiced, "You've got caught. Come out and surrender!"
Like a thief, the hyperactive American stood up behind the bushes. Scratching his head, he sheepishly came before the blunette who was folding her arms on her chest, being a stern investigator. The brunette's eyes danced at her brother which snatched his criminal-like expression from his face within no moment.
"Why're you laughing at me, huh?" The blonde grouched, "Are you my sister or enemy?"
"I'm Mariam's friend," Charlotte embraced the blunette, "And a friend should help his or her friend always, don't you know?"
"Ugh..." Max growled, "Anyways, go to that place and make sure whether the kites are fighting with eagles or not."
"Why?" The brunette placed her hands on the sides of the waist, "Why should I go for checking that? Why cannot you go?"
"Aww Charlotte...don't argue with your brother," Mariam rubbed her head, "After a while, I'll also come with you. Okay?"
"Okay..." Murmuring, the girl moped at her brother. Then, she left the place. Getting the chance, stealthily, the blonde neared the blunette, keeping his hands behind.
"Don't need to do it anymore," Mariam sulked, "I don't want to talk to you."
"Why?" Max tilted his brows, "Are you angry with me?"
"No, why should I be angry with you?" The blunette grimaced, "Am I worthy enough of being angry? After all, I am a witch. I screech like a donkey; I have no good quality. I should get changed, shouldn't I?"
"C'mon Mariam, you know," The American rubbed his palms together, "I cannot see anyone praising you without me. It makes me jealous. Not even a bird or an animal. Got it?"
"Then...who'll praise me?"
"Me!" Max leapt, "Wanna listen?"
"Sure, as the wish of prince Max Tate." Mariam shrugged, "Continue."
"Okie!" Coughing, the flaxen-haired American started singing:
I know you, I do.
Oh, stranger from distant lands.
Your home is across the seas.
Oh, you strange and unknown woman.
Closing her eyes in comfort, the blunette kept listening to him. No, he wasn't the best singer of the world. Let alone being that, his voice used to quiver to hum a single lyric. Even his words aren't so aristocratic and rich. He was delivering his message to her in his own way. It was unique. It wasn't intricate, yet, it was splendid. Unknowingly, she rested her head on the pillow of his shoulder. Protectively, he imprisoned her one in the fence of his arms. Burying his nose in her night blue locks, he tried to smell the best perfume of the world at that moment. Nightingales decided to chorus, anklet-less feet of the peacocks tapped the tabor of the ground and they kept plodding, not knowing that they were being watched.
"I did inform you, your Majesty," A maid whispered, "They aren't friends anymore. The friendship of their childhood has already deepened its color in their youth. Now, how will you wash it?"
"You were right, Kumi," The blonde lady gritted her fists and teeth in rage, moving her eyes away from the scene, "I must have listened to you. I left the girl with my boy in their childhood, thinking that a single spark wouldn't be able to cause much harm. Little did I know that it would turn into a flame that would destroy my hopes and dreams about my son."
"But it hasn't turned so bigger that you cannot extinguish it, your majesty," The attendant tried to console, "Still you have enough time to smother it. Why don't you wipe away her existence from the earth?"
"Do you think that I don't have that ability?" The queen of America raised an eyebrow, "I can do everything to her without a single sign of being the culprit. If she remains alive, she'll be forgotten. But...if she gets killed, she'll be a legend. So, I have to carry out my job with a cool head. Infuriation can do nothing except harming us, Kumi."
"But...she's a princess now," Kumi intended to put oil in fire, "This is an advantage for her."
"A beggar doesn't become a king getting something as bounty, Kumi," Judy rumbled, "Her father was a cheap executioner. My brother-in-law had mercy on them and so they got to achieve a royal life. It doesn't mean that they deserve it."
"Then...what's your conspiracy?"
"Conspiracies are planned by courtesans, Kumi," The mother grinned, "Queens and empresses do politics. Go and send a letter to Emily, informing her that I have ordered her to reach Japan as soon as possible."
"As your wish, your Majesty." Bowing, the maid left the place. Watching the lovebirds, the American lady pondered, 'Now, I'm sending my own hawk in this field. One will be in my cage and one...hahahahaha!"
The royal lanes of the palace of cold Russia were warm with the footsteps of the people from different walks of life. Placing round wooden baskets on their heads, farmers and fishermen were heading to the kitchen with fishes, vegetables, crops, fruits and meats. Milkmen were carrying the jugs and croakers of milk, curd, yogurt and cheeses. Gardeners were delivering fresh flower and garlands; artists were painting mandalas on the different places of the floors with the colors of rainbow. From another room, the sounds of different musical instruments, the clinking of the anklets of dancers and the combined voices of the singers were heard, seeming to take part in any rehearsal. The queen of the icy kingdom walked with the prime minister to check everything.
"Set everything for the arrangements of the journey of our children, sister-in-laws and other guests to Japan," The empress ordered, "According to the rules, I'll stay here and prepare for welcoming the new bride."
"You don't worry, your Majesty," The vicar assured, "For charity, cloths, jewelries and grains have been brought. Chemists are preparing perfumes. The best chefs of our kingdom have already been informed. This wedding of our prince will be a memorable one, I promise."
"I see, Sir..." The queen wrinkled her brows, "But under whose supervision are these tasks taking place?"
(In another room)
On her large velvet bed, the Russian princess was sitting in lotus pose, leaning against the headboard. Standing by her sides, two maids were fanning the warm vapors in her direction with peacock-feather fans. Before her, a couple of men and women were lowering their heads. On the bed, the trays of different cloths and ornaments were placed. Lifting them, the redhead was examining their quality with utmost concentration. A single fault couldn't avoid her keen hawk eyes. Sometimes, stopping fanning, the attendants were coming to help her. Her skilled and experienced fingers were caressing the texture of the attires. Even in their smoothness, she was easily finding out the cragginess.
"Try to bring smoother cloths for the brides," She advised, "They are not Russians. Wearing heavy dresses, they mayn't feel comfortable. Of course, they have to cope with the traditions of this kingdom but not so soon. They should never feel that we are pressurizing them. Got it?"
"Okay, your Highness."
"Besides, arrange blankets for them," Natalia added, "They are from tropical kingdoms. Adjusting to the environment of Russia will be so tough for them. The blankets will help them."
"As your wish, your Highness."
"Natalia!"
Startled, the red-haired lady looked at the doorway where she found her sister-in-law. Standing up and bowing, she turned to the servants and ordered, "You may go now."
Bending their heads once, they emptied the room. Soon, the queen entered. Glancing all over the atmosphere, with surprised eyes, she asked, "What's this, Natalia? I thought you weren't happy with Kai's marriage."
"I wasn't but I am now," Crossing her arms, the redhead spoke, "As the princess of Russia, I also have my own opinions regarding the facts of the royal families. Whereas, you always tell your decisions to me, Apraxia."
Tears gleamed in her eyes as she continued, "But...after all, it's the wedding of our Kai, our dear prince. He himself has chosen his own life-partner. How could I overlook his choice? The girl has helped him regain Dranzer. How could I despise her? It's our good fortune that she's going to be our daughter-in-law, the bride of Hiwatari clan. Supervising all the preparations of this auspicious festival is a blessing to me, sister-in-law. Please, don't deprive me of it."
"Oh Natalie..." Sniffing, the violet-haired lady hugged the step-sister of her late husband, "I knew that you would agree with us sooner or later."
"I had to agree, Apraxia," Natalia beamed, "Anyways, pardon me. Without informing you, I have taken another decision."
"Another decision?" Apraxia frowned, "What's it?"
"Actually, Kai sent a letter to me," The mother of the wolf-prince replied, "In that, he suggested me to think over the marriage of Tala with the princess of Spain who is the cousin of the Japanese princess. I viewed her picture. She's beautiful. Besides, Spain is a strong and well-instituted kingdom. What do you think about it?"
"It's surely a good news, Natalia," The queen grinned, "Of course I have no grudge against it. But...how will you send the proposal to her guardians?"
"Don't worry about that, sister-in-law," The consent of the empress doubled her excitement, "I have already told Dimitree about it. The men are going to Japan with the children and the rest of my sisters too. They'll raise the proposal there."
"It's a good thought, Natalia," Apraxia nodded, "I cannot believe that we are going to be mother-in-laws!"
"Hehehe...we have been old, haven't we?"
"Yeah..." Exhaling, the violet-haired lady looked outside at the passing clouds, 'Wish you could be alive now, Susumu...'
"Going against the wielder of Dranzer..." The dirty blonde-haired lady trembled, closing her eyes, "Isn't it the sign of ruining?"
"Why're you getting tensed, mother?" The gray-haired young man queried, "You know that father takes every step after thinking a lot. He's very intelligent. He won't do such things which will be the reasons behind our destruction. He will never do them."
"What?" The queen turned to her nephew, "Garland, was his plan of destroying Japan the outcome of his intelligence? The molestation of women, killing the innocent, torturing the sages-he's doing only sins and supporting him, you have also got involved in this. Does this suit you? This can become the very reason for the ravage of Doomland."
"Stay in your limits, Alendra!" Out of the blue, a purple-haired guy roared, making his wife shiver, "Don't forget that the one to whom you are talking is not only your son and the crown-prince of this kingdom, but also the one who has gained victory over Apollon, the Greek deity. Since he has been able to win against a dauntless warrior, I have given him the title 'Siebald'. Don't humiliate the Siebald!"
"No father, nothing like that..." The martial-artist spoke, "Mother was only exposing her fears."
"Does it suit you, Alendra?" Boris raised his brows, "I have made you my chief consort and my head empress. Everyone in this place...nope, in this world craves to take your place."
"I am proud enough of being your head empress, my king," Alendra sighed, "In this world, nobody is as wise as you. But...I am worried as many people have cursed you. Isn't it obvious?"
"Illiterate and weak people can do nothing save that, Alendra," The king of the underground leered wickedly, "I have said it before. Besides, a king has to do a lot of things to retain the existence of his kingdom. You won't understand these things. Leave the place, I have to talk to Garland for a while."
Sighing, the blonde looked at the father-son duo. Her heart crimped as she bit her lips. Heaving once again, she went out of the room slowly.
"Samaye prekrasnaye chustva - kagda ty smotrish na nevo i vidish, shto on smotrit na tebya," The chocolate-haired girl recited the quotation thoroughly, stroking the line on the thick yellow page of the book with her finger, "It means: The best feeling is when you look at him and he is already staring."
Her heart travelled down the memory lane. Removing her eyes from the book, she stared at the roaming vapors outside. Soon, like them, she would leave her kingdom. Her feet will fall on the ground of another empire. She wasn't dissatisfied. After all, how many girls on the earth gain the chance of getting married to their favorite persons? In comparison with the rest of them, she was so lucky, wasn't she?
Suddenly, her concentration broke as she heard someone's sobbing. Glowering, she turned to her mother from whose eyes tears were sprinkling on her cheeks. In front of her, there was an open wooden box. She was holding a silver bracelet studded with corals. Her rheum fell on those gemstones, making them sparkle more. The size of the jewelry was so small.
"Mother!" She rushed to her, "What happened? Why are you crying?"
"How time does fly!" Nonchalantly, the queen uttered, "Remember this?"
With her daughter, the queen travelled down her memory lanes too. Her memories were of affection. The clinking of a child's laughter rose there. Her squishy words showered honey on her ears.
"Mother! Look at this bracelet! I'll wear it on my wedding day."
"No Hil, how will you get married now?" Forgetting where and when she was, the empress chortled, "You're a little sweet girl..."
"Little sweet girl?" The ruby eyes of the brunette became dilated.
"Huh?" Baffled, the woman looked all over the area once. Then, she realized that she'd been being hallucinated. Chuckling and slapping on her forehead, she said, "How forgetful I am! How can you be a little girl now? You're going to get married within less than two weeks. Before sixteen years, you couldn't wear this bracelet because your wrist was little. Now, this jewelry has been small...that's why..."
"No mother, I haven't grown up!" Hilary placed her head on her lap, "I'm still your baby girl. I don't want to go far from you, mother."
"In Russia, another mother is waiting for you, my child," The mother caressed her head affectionately, "With four aunts. They all will love you a lot. I'm afraid whether you forget me completely getting their affection..."
"What are you saying, mother?" Raising her head, the brunette furiously shook it as liquid pearls seeped on her face, "How can I forget you ever? You're my own mother. You carried me in your womb for nine months, gave me birth and brought me up. Are your care and affection comparable? Can they ever be?"
"Why're you crying, Hilary?" Sayoko wiped her tears, "You must be very pleased. Look at me once, how happy I am!"
She wasn't lying. She wasn't even speaking the truth. Her tears were made of mixed emotions. They were a combination of estrangement and happiness. She couldn't believe that the sweet girl, whom she had brought in this world before nearly 20 years, was going to be far from her. The pain couldn't be...it cannot be tolerated at all.
The ogles of the brunette stopped at the doorway as she found her father standing there motionlessly. He wasn't speaking anything. He'd been only watching them. Neither he had come inside, nor had he left them alone. A mother can always express her pain to her daughter like a friend, but what about a father? Don't their hearts bleed? Don't they feel sad? Shouldn't they expose their grief to their children? If the father is a king, it becomes tougher, doesn't it?
"Father!" The girl hurried to the brown-haired man. Embracing him tightly, she burst into tears, "I know...I know that you're a king. Before the subjects, before everyone, it mayn't be possible for you to be open. But deep inside...you're a father too. From the rest of the world, you may hide your emotions but you cannot hide them from your daughter! Never!"
Finally, accepting his defeat, silently, the king let his tears fall, hugging his daughter back closer to his chest. Maybe, it was considered to be his weakness but he didn't care. At least, he wasn't suppressing them. They wouldn't cause much pain after it.
What kind of hesitation was it?
The crops which are cut don't grow again,
The daughters who are wed don't come back again,
No, my beloved, the snow will melt.
The crops will grow again,
My prayers shall walk underneath your feet.
'My girl...' He sniffed, 'Be happy wherever you remain.'
Joss-sticks started emanating aromatic smokes, dipped inside the clay pots. The priests flapped the horsehair fly whisks in front of the holy idol. Lamps kindled, flowers discharged the fragrance and ribbons swayed. Sitting in diamond pose, the chocolate-haired girl drummed the strings of the koto. Melodious jingles of hundreds of untold words sprang from the speechless instrument. Behind her, her sisters sat in lotus pose, consciously listening to her songs. Absent-minded, the orange-banged girl looked back. As she discovered the phoenix-prince heading towards the temple with his cousin, her eyes lit. At the same time, they dimmed. Clenching her mouth, she thought, 'Why does this redhead have always to cling to his cousin? For him, Hilary hardly gets a chance to talk properly to brother-in-law. Now, this Julia Fernandez has to do something.'
Coughing, she turned to the blunette, "Mariam, Dew, Charlotte-please come with me for a while."
"Now?" The royal blue-haired girl tilted her brows, "But where?"
"Ugh...stop asking questions and come with me..." Standing up, almost dragging the girls, the Spaniard took them out of the prayer room. Descending the stairs, they met the boys. Bowing, the dual-haired girl started, "Greetings, brother-in-law. I have a request."
"Sure." Giving a mild smile, the phoenix-prince approved.
"Actually, we want to go to pluck lotuses for veneration from the central lake of the eastern jungle," She rubbed her palms together, "But we are afraid because there's nobody with us. If you don't mind, can you let your cousin accompany us?"
"Hn," Nodding, the dual-haired Russian ordered the redhead, "Tala, go with the girls."
"But..." The wolf-prince tried to protest, "Kai, I was supposed to have the sight of the deity with you at first, wasn't I?"
"Stop arguing with me, Tala!" His cousin chided, "The responsibility of the protection of the women comes first. Go with them."
"Okay..." Lowering his head, he sighed. His sapphire eyes fell on the dual-haired girl who was smirking. That grin burned him from his core. Nonetheless, he didn't have the ability of objecting anymore. Letting his face hang, he proceeded with the ladies. Giving a sly chuckle, the slate-haired prince entered the temple. The prayer room was almost empty at that time. All the priests had already left. Facing the idol, a familiar brunette was praying. Her words chimed in his ears like gentle gusts of wind. Leaning against a pillar, he paid attention.
'On this earth, who is luckier than I, my lady?' She whispered, 'My parents are great and love me a lot. My friends and cousins are incomparable. Tyson is not only my best friend but also the greatest of all the friends in this world. Finally, in the form of my husband, you have gifted me the gem named Hiwatarian, prince Kai Hiwatari. The one who has got so many things, what else she can want from you? She can only express her gratitude to you, my lady.'
Revolving back, her eyes met his. Blushing, she stood up. Quickly, she remembered the quotation from the book which she had been reading in that morning. The feeling was exceptional. It couldn't be described in words of this material world.
"You...here?" Breaking the barrier of reticence, she asked.
"Actually...I wanted to ask you a question," Breathing, he started, "If you allow..."
"Of course," Hilary nodded, "My prince, you don't need my permission for asking me something. You can go ahead."
"Are you happy with this marriage?"
Hilary's heart skipped a beat. After the confession, after the indirect but obvious disclosures of amour, what was he asking? Was he okay?
"I mean..." He tried to clarify, "After what had happened in your groom-choosing ceremony, did you take the decision being emotional or under the pressure of the rules and customs?"
"I was pressurized..." The brunette murmured, "But my emotions or the customs of the society didn't impose anything on me. Rather, it was my belief, it was my heart's desire which forced me to decide to marry you, prince."
"Belief?"
"Yes, my trust," The princess affirmed, "Before my groom-choosing ceremony, I came to this temple too with a questioning heart. I wanted to know whom I would marry. I wanted to learn who would be my future life-partner. Then, all my doubts got clarified when I knew that sage Dickenson had permitted you to attend the contest. Your arrival in Russia, the murder of demoness Katherine, the revival of lady Kincaid-everything was pulling me towards you, my prince."
"How did you gain so much belief on me, princess?"
"Are you testing me?" Hilary snickered.
"It was my test to gain victory in the final round of the groom-choosing ceremony, Hilary," Kai's face was lacking of emotions, "I am just wanting to know the reason."
"Belief shouldn't be based on any logic or concept, prince," His fiancée tittered, "It's a natural feeling. I don't know its source. You agree with me, don't you?"
"Hn..." Nodding once, he gazed at her as a smile claimed the realm of his emotionless face. He believed her, she believed him. It was enough to be the root of their love. Slowly, he expanded one of his arms towards her. Getting the signal, she put her palm on it. Their fingers intertwined each other. Taking her, he went to the backyard of the temple. A dense forest it was, being an orchard made by mother nature herself. The fragrance of ripe fruits excited their salivary glands and flirted with their nostrils. Cuckoos hummed, bumblebees welcomed the couple in their territory. In euphoria, she pressed her head on his chest, forgetting that she was a princess. At that time, she was a lover. Not paying any heed to his status, he also tied her in his knuckles like a precious possession.
"Love you..." He pronounced, tickling her ears.
"Love you too..." She snuggled against his well-built ribcage, seeking for more warmth in the cold Russian.
'For hearing this sentence from you, I can die and be born again and again, Kai.'
'I don't know whether rebirths exist or not. But I only know that you're mine. You're only mine, Hilary.'
I've seen you on autumn mornings.
I've seen you on fragrant nights.
I've seen you in my own heart.
I've spread my hearing across the skies.
I've head your songs I have.
I've surrendered my life to you.
To you, my stranger.
Precap of the next chapter:
"What have you done, Juli ni-chan?" The purplette pouted, "He came to accompany us for our well-being and you angered him? Is it fair?"
"I've just took the revenge of my humiliation from him, Dew," Julia grimaced, "Now let me pluck those flowers. Stop disturbing me."
Sighing, the girls went behind the redhead to pacify him. Sniggering, the dual-haired girl kowtowed beside the pond and stretched an arm to pull out a flower...
"Splash!"
Before her, a four-footed carnivorous animal rose on an ice-berg. Its thick, white furs were preventing his skin from the ruthless chills of the outer world. When it opened his mouth, four canines like the blades of Dao swords exposed themselves. Its ears twitched a bit, embodying his hearing power. Droplets of saliva were trickling down from his keen tongue, revealing the fact that he was very hungry. At that time, only the blood and the flesh of a human being could smother the flames of his appetite.
With a jolt, the Spaniard stood up. Neither she had the energy of screaming left in her throat, nor could she attack that animal back. For the first time in her life, fear invaded her from all the directions. Noticing it, the eyes of all the girls went amplified.
"Julia!"
How's it? Good or bad?
Do read and review. Pardon all the grammatical mistakes and the spelling errors. Also I'm so sorry because this chapter has been so small. Why not? After all, I wanted to keep the suspense here :P
Anyways, reviewwww!
Take care and stay safe :D
