"I am coming in late because I overslept since my building lost power last night. Ow." Erin said on the phone as she gets the bagels out of the toaster.
"Just push everything back and move a couple of things…Thank you." Erin hangs up her phone and looks at the time then walks to the bathroom with the bagels.
"Hon?" Erin asked and Miranda pulls back the curtain in the shower.
"What's up?" Miranda asked then takes a bite of the bagel that Erin is holding for her as the attorney is trying so hard to not join her in the shower.
"We have a meeting with your family's minister then we're having lunch with your parents and my father."
"I know that."
"The meeting is at ten and it's already eight."
"The girls at school?"
"Yes."
"Lose the robe, Reagan." Erin places the bagels onto the counter, takes off the robe and joins Miranda in the shower, tenderly kissing her.
"They're on their way up." Miranda said to Erin in her fiancée's office. Erin releases a deep breath and Miranda rubs her arms.
"You love Minister Patrick. He baptized Heather and is supportive of us." Miranda said softly.
"I know." Erin looks behind Miranda and sees her father pushing a wheelchair. She turns Miranda around and the captain's eyes fill up with tears when she sees her grandfather.
"Pops. What are you doing here?" Miranda asked as she walks over to him and gets down on one knee.
"Doctor's don't know a thing." Thomas said. Doctors are baffled about how he's still alive.
"You are supposed to be resting."
"I will rest when I'm dead. It's not everyday that my granddaughter gets married."
"Jane helped you get down here, didn't she?" He taps his nose and Miranda softly smiles.
"I'm glad you're here." She said softly.
"Me too. Erin. You look lovelier than ever." Thomas said.
"Thank you, Thomas." Erin said as Miranda's phone starts ringing.
"Miranda, you promised." Erin said.
"I know. Hold on." Miranda said then answers the phone.
"Yeah Jamie, what is it?" Miranda asked on the phone.
"Which hospital?…Ok, I'm on my way." Miranda hangs up the phone.
"What is it?" Erin asked.
"Heather got into a car accident." Miranda said.
Miranda paces inside the waiting room with her hands on her hips as the family is in there as well while Heather's getting a CT scan. She looks out the window and rubs her eyes.
"Miranda." She hears and looks over then walks over to Linda.
"How bad?" She asked.
"She's got a broken leg, arm, internal bruising, broken ribs from the seat belt. But she is going to be fine." Linda said and Miranda sighs in relief.
"And the other driver?"
"Police have him in custody on suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana. I'll give you a few minutes to collect yourself before you go see her."
"Thanks Linda."
"You're welcome. She did ask to see you, but I will give you a few minutes." Miranda and rubs her eyes then looks down as the tears fall.
"What is it?" Doug asked after walking over and she looks at her parents and Erin.
"She's got a broken arm, broken leg, fractured ribs and internal bruising, but she's going to be fine." Miranda said and they all sigh in relief.
"That is amazing news."
"Can we see her?" Nicky asked.
"Give me a few minutes to see her myself." Miranda said.
"What about the driver?" Erin asked.
"Your brother arrested him for DWI of narcotics."
Heather carefully sits up in the bed in the ER with a wince and she holds her stomach.
"Ow." She said softly.
"Take it easy. The bruising is going to last for a few weeks." Miranda said softly.
"I'm sorry, Mom."
"Don't. I'm more glad that you are alive."
"I took the car because it was freezing and raining."
"I know. The car is totaled. Due to your injuries, basketball is over for the season and so is softball."
"Great." Heather whispered.
"And you also have to be in a wheelchair for the next four to six weeks."
"Can this get any worse?"
"It can and it is because Momma flew out. You're going to be staying with her."
"Oh no. Anyone but her, Mom." Heather said with a slight plea in her tone.
"I can't stay home sweetie to keep an eye on you since I need to use the vacation time on my honeymoon." Miranda said.
"But she's going to hover and check ever ten seconds to make sure that I'm not in pain. I understand that she's a doctor, but -"
"But she is your other mother that loves you and dropped everything to be here for you." Miranda gives Heather a certain look and the teenager sighs.
"You're right."
"Besides, Jane is dealing with Pike." The injured teen laughs then holds her side.
"Ow, please don't make me laugh." Heather said.
"You're going to be sore and in some discomfort for a while." Maura said after walking into the room.
"I figured as much."
"Let's get you out of here."
"I will pick you up after church on Sunday for Sunday dinner." Miranda said after getting Heather comfortable at Maura's apartment. Heather nods and Miranda kisses her forehead, relieved that her daughter is ok.
"Please make sure that my parents see her before they head back to Boston." Miranda said to Maura.
"I will make sure they will." Maura said.
"Tell Jane I owe her for arranging my grandfather to be here."
"Jane didn't arrange it. I did."
"Well, thank you. Heather, rest and I will see you on Sunday." Miranda said.
"Bye Mom."
Miranda walks into the 21st precinct and Jamie walks over to her with Eddie. She takes the police report from him and reads it.
"Not only was he high as a kite, but he was also drunk. Ten times the legal limit." Jamie said.
"Erin said that she's going to trial against him. Mostly to nail his ass and possibly give him the book." Miranda said.
"That's your copy."
"Thanks. I'll bring it to Erin."
"How's Heather doing?" Eddie asked.
"My ex-girlfriend has her, but she's going to be fine. In a wheelchair for a few weeks, but it could have been worse." Miranda said.
At Sunday dinner, Miranda sets Heather's meat in front of her after she cut it up for her daughter. Bruises from the car accident are noticeable on Heather's face from when she hit her head against the window and air bag.
"Thanks Mom." Heather said softly.
"You're welcome."
"What happened to you?" Jack asked Heather.
"Got into a bar fight and got whipped with a baseball bat." Heather joked, which Miranda didn't find funny at all.
"She got into a car accident." Erin said.
"She's going to be fine, guys." Linda said.
"This is why we warned you guys about dangerous drivers a while back." Frank said.
"So what's going to happen to him?" Heather asked.
"Since this is his third offense with a DUI and driving on a suspended license, he will be going to prison for a long time." Erin said.
"Who exactly was the driver?" Henry asked.
"Former NYPD detective Gerald Moore." Miranda said.
"Wait, a former cop nearly killed Heather?" Danny asked.
"He was fired from the force for showing up to work drunk. I suspended him twice and the third time, I had to report him to Frank."
"His drinking got worse. Hopefully the time in prison will help him realize what he did and gets the help he needs." Frank said. Miranda gently pushes her plate back, wipes her mouth with her napkin.
"I need to go do something." Miranda said. She kisses Erin's cheek, kisses Heather's head, then heads out.
"Where is she going?" Nancy asked as Erin wipes her mouth with her napkin.
"I don't ask question, Grandma." Heather said.
"I hit Heather?" Gerald asked Miranda in the visitor's cell.
"You nearly killed my daughter. So, why shouldn't I kill you?" She asked. He sighs and rubs his face.
"I already lost my family, my job. It's the damn job that got me to start drinking. Damn it, Cap. You know how hard work gets. Don't you let loose after a tough case?"
"If I got loose after every single case, I would be out of a job. Just like you. I had to report you because you screwed up and not to mention that you beat a suspect to a pulp during interrogation, which thanks to you, walked."
"How she doing?"
"In a wheelchair for a few weeks with a broken arm and leg, internal bruising, but she got damn lucky."
"Moore already has a visitor." The guard said to Erin.
"Who?" Erin asked and he looks.
"Captain Miranda Hill."
"Get me to the room. Now."
"Yes ma'am."
Miranda looks out the window and sighs as Gerald is at the table when the door opens. She looks over and Erin looks at her fiancee. She looks at the Gerald and back at Miranda.
"Everything alright here?" Erin asked.
"Just talking. I'll see you at home." Miranda said to Erin then leaves.
"She didn't hit me. She wanted to, but she didn't." Gerald said to Erin.
"Can't sleep?" Heather hears and looks over to see Miranda at the doorway to the bedroom.
"No. These damn casts are bugging me. Nicky's spending the night at Frank's. What are you doing up anyway?" Heather asked as Miranda walks into the room.
"I've been having a hard time sleeping since that phone call about your accident." Miranda said then sits in Heather's desk chair.
"You couldn't have known that Moore was driving drunk." Heather said softly.
"No, but as a cop, it's my responsibility that my officers, in my precinct, catch people driving under the influence."
"Mom, you are one of 35 thousand cops in the largest city on the east coast. There's no way that you all can do DUI checks."
"I know." Miranda sighs.
"You know, when your Uncle Will died, part of me died as well because I lost my best friend. That part came back the day you entered the world. I don't know what I would have done if you were more seriously hurt or even killed." Miranda said softly.
"But I'm ok because you taught me multiple things for when I am driving. The biggest thing you taught me was to always wear my seat belt. That saved my life."
"Yes it did. Get some sleep, ok?" Heather nods. Miranda fixes Heather's pillow under her leg then tenderly kisses her daughter's forehead.
"I love you." Miranda said softly.
"I love you too." Heather said and Miranda kisses her forehead again.
